By creating a supportive environment to facilitate the goals of each student, the SSC is dedicated to ensuring the best opportunities for success in the real world upon graduation and beyond. Through one-on-one scheduled appointments, group workshops, tutoring sessions and a variety of additional resources, SSC counselors can provide assistance to current students and alumni in the areas listed on the following page. These services include: Personal Counseling Health & Wellness Assistance in resolving personal difficulties or adjusting to campus life. Students can meet with a counselor one-on-one, and all conversations are confidential. Information on nearby medical clinics, doctors, and hospitals for students’ physical and mental health needs. Free yoga/meditation classes open to all students. Tutor Scheduling Academic Appeals & Changes Scheduling free, one-on-one tutor sessions to help students keep up with academic course work. Assistance with certain academicrelated processes like final grade appeals, incompletes, course load adjustments, formal complaints, or changes of enrollment status, such as a withdrawal or leave of absence. last updated 07.22.2015 page 4 CAREER DEVELOPMENT SSC staff provides information, resources and networking opportunities to help students create and meet personal career goals. Counselors provide individual, one-on-one attention or group sessions during scheduled appointments that can cover résumés, cover letters, EPK’s (Electronic Press Kits), personal web-page development and mock interview services. Professional Development Career Mentors A variety of services are offered to help implement job search strategies, get industry exposure and develop promotional materials. This includes assistance with MI’s talent and job networking website: http://connects.mi.edu/ Students can meet with industry experts on specific topics. These mentors guide students through the challenges of meeting their own unique career goals. Bookings are done through the MI Portal at http://mobile.mi.edu. Career Workshops General Affiliations and Discounts to Career Events Career-related workshops are held every quarter to bolster a student’s understanding of the music and entertainment industries. Students are encouraged to attend career related events with MI’s discounted and seasonal rates. Past events and affiliations include: NAMM Show, ASCAP I Create Music Expo, TAXI Road Rally, Grammy U, California Copyright Conference, and more. last updated 07.22.2015 page 5 ALUMNI ENGAGEMENT The services of the SSC continue to be available after students graduate from their MI program. Alumni can stay connected to MI and the music industry through clinics, educational events and networking opportunities. Graduates also have the opportunity to make appointments with SSC team members. Social Media Management Alumni can receive instruction on the best practices and current trends in using various social media platforms for branding, marketing and promotion. Network Events and the Alumni Pass Alumni are invited to special Alumni-only networking events. Alumni also have access to the school during specific times in the quarter. Audition Training Students & alumni learn the techniques of preparing for auditions to ensure the best chance of getting hired through Audition Workshops and Mock Auditions. INTERNSHIP PLACEMENT & ASSISTANCE The Internship Program provides first-hand experience in the music industry through internship positions in music-related companies for Audio Engineering and Common Course students. Music Business students are required to complete an internship for their major’s requirement in their second quarter. Internship Companies Internship companies can include publishers, recording studios, marketing firms, post-production facilities, artist managers, music libraries, record labels, PR firms, booking agencies, and more. MI provides no guarantee regarding the future availability of internships at specific companies or in specific positions. Placement is subject to availability and student qualifications. last updated 07.22.2015 page 6 HOUSING MI is dedicated to assisting students who are seeking housing that is safe, comfortable, convenient and affordable. Apartment Vacancy Listing Service Roommate Referral Service and Housing Meetings Students have daily access to vacancy listings for areas adjacent to MI (Hollywood, West Hollywood and Hollywood Hills). MI students and graduates have exclusive access to MI’s Roommate Referral list. Housing meetings, which provide an opportunity to meet potential roommates in-person, are conducted daily during each two-week quarterly break. Student Housing Guide Shuttle Service/Transportation This informative MI Housing Guide includes valuable information about settling in and getting around Los Angeles, and includes guidelines for dealing with landlords, rental agreements, hostels, hotels, and tips for maintaining a budget. The Housing Guide also has a current list of apartment managers and home-stay companies that have worked with MI students in the past. We provide a free shuttle service within a two-mile radius from the school to your home. Shuttle hours of operation are Monday - Friday 5:00pm - 2:00am and Saturday - Sunday 10:00pm - 1:00am. last updated 07.22.2015 page 7 INTERNATIONAL STUDENT AFFAIRS Our International Student advisors can counsel students in regards to Student Visas, I-20’s, F-1 extensions, Transfers, OPT work permits, and other student visa related topics. Culture shock and adjustment counseling is also available for those students having difficulties adjusting to a new environment. ADDITIONAL SERVICES In addition, SSC team members can provide assistance in the following areas: Community Resources Student Workers Lockers Discount tickets for entertainment events & attractions are available, as well as public transportation maps. Opportunities are available for on-campus employment and federal work-study placement*. Lockers are available on campus, and students can sign up in the SSC.
