Vice President’s Notes
NIC student wins national award
NIC Head Start Director BethAnn Fuller announced that Melly Casillas
recently won the National Head Start Parent of the Year
Award. Casillas is a hard-working mother and NIC student and very deserving of this national honor.
Space heaters prohibited on campus
Just a reminder that personal space heaters are prohibited on campus. Space heaters are expensive to operate,
only address an immediate area, disrupt existing systems,
and most importantly, create an unnecessary fire hazard.
NIC’s HVAC Department uses up-to-date equipment to
monitor specific rooms and areas to maintain standard
temperatures as set by state guidelines.
Ron Dorn
If you still would like some extra warmth, we have approved the use of a specific foot warmer, which generates enough extra heat to keep
people comfortable and also meets our facilities safety and energy-saving guidelines.
Facilities Operations has several in stock at this time; to order a foot warmer, put in
a work request at https://www.myschoolbuilding.com/myschoolbuilding/msbdefault_email.
asp?frompage=myrequest.asp. There will be a $50 charge to your budget to reimburse
our cost. If you have any questions, call Toni Kirsch at Ext. 3413.
Register for vehicle use training
Remember that on July 1, President’s Cabinet adopted Vehicle Use Guidelines, which can be found at http://www.nic.edu/modules/images/websites/107/
file/vehicleuseguidelines.pdf.
If you will be driving a fleet vehicle, contact George Myers in Transportation at Ext. 3309 to register for the last training session in November at 9:30
a.m. Thursday, Nov. 17. If you drive your personal vehicle on college business,
you do not need to complete the training, however you do have to sign page 7 of
the Vehicle Use Agreement and return it to Resource Management.
NIC recognized for volunteerism
I am proud to represent NIC at the Governor’s Brightest Star award ceremony in Boise on Nov. 10. This award celebrates the dedication and accomplishments of Idaho volunteers. North Idaho College was nominated for this
award and has been forwarded to the Governor’s office as one of the top five in
its category. A well-deserved recognition for our campus community.
Final note of thanks
Sometimes we forget how lucky we are to work in such a beautiful setting.
Many thanks to Landscape Services for its ongoing diligence in making our gem
of a campus shine.
-Ron Dorn, vice president for resource management

Danny Marsh honored with Sterling Silver Award
Danny Marsh, landscape technician with Landscape Services/Facilities
Operations, has been honored with the October 2011 Sterling Silver Award.
Marsh’s work ethic, friendliness, and dependability were all cited as reasons he
is deserving of the award.
“I have worked at
NIC for 20 years and
have rarely seen an individual more dedicated to
the college and the job
that they perform,” said
Doug Anderson, Trades
and Industry Division
chair. “Danny is always
chipper and upbeat while
going about the duties of
his job.”
Gayne Clifford, Business and Professional Programs Division chair, said
he has never seen Marsh President Priscilla Bell (left) and Jody Azevedo of
put less than “100 percent Numerica Credit Union (right) present Danny Marsh,
into whatever task he is landscape technician in Landscape Services/Facilities
doing. I think it would be Operations, with the October Sterling Silver Award.
very difficult to find another employee who works as hard as Danny.”
“Danny is an NIC icon. If you stop to talk to Danny he always smiles and
chats, but he rarely will stop the task in which he is engaged,” said Dean Bennett, director of Student Activities. “Never complaining, always a smile, busy
with every task assigned; I think this exemplifies the traits of a Sterling Silver
Award winner. Danny Marsh is deserving of this honor.”

Mobile technology survey results announced
The results of the mobile technology survey are in. A total of 519 people
participated in the survey, 83 percent of whom were students, 7 percent faculty,
9 percent staff, and 1 percent community members. So, what did we learn? We
learned that 59 percent of you carry smartphones of which 39 percent run on
the Android operating system and 21 percent of respondents use an iPhone.
What are you doing with those smartphones and cell phones? It’s no surprise
the most popular activity is texting, followed by taking pictures, checking email,
and accessing social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. You visit the
NIC website more often than cruising MyNIC or ANGEL/MyNIC Courses (55
percent vs. 45 percent), but the question did not fully explore if you are using
one site to gain access to another. Our best guess is that is what you are doing.
You told us that it is not too difficult to find a place to plug in; 90 percent
said doing so is good or fairly easy if you just look around. Once you are powered
up, what do you want to do with your mobile device? Instructors want to be able
to take attendance, grade assignments, add content to courses, and use mobile
devices to share content with students (such as show a PowerPoint presentation
or a video). Students want to be able to check grades on the go, submit assignments and add attachments on the fly, and view videos on the move.
The good news? The upgrade of the learning management system from
ANGEL version 7.3 to the Blackboard 9.1 Next Generation platform includes
Blackboard Mobile Learn, which provides greater access to online classes on
both the Android and iOS operating systems and on a variety of browsers, including Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari. This means you will be able to
take attendance, check grades, add attachments and content, watch videos, and
submit assignments from your smartphones, notebooks, netbooks, tablet PCs,
iPads, and iPhones. The upgrade also features improved integration with e-textbooks and publisher websites. To learn more about the Blackboard 9.1 Next
Generation platform and Mobile Learn, drop by one of our open demonstrations in November or December (watch the Week’sWorth for days and times)
or schedule a demonstration for your department by contacting us via email at
[email protected].
Thank you for taking the time to share your insights, experiences, and comments with us. To view the complete results, go to http://www.nic.edu/elo and
click the “Mobile Survey Results” link. Please feel free to continue to share your
suggestions with us at [email protected].
Congratulations to survey participant Jessica Wylie, the winner of the NIC
goodie basket!

The toll of smoking
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cigarette smoking
is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States; accounting for approximately one out of every five deaths annually.
Stay tuned over the next month as Human Resources staff explores different
ways to help smokers quit for good. Quitting is not easy, but it is possible through
hard work, determination, and social support.
