Vice President’s Notes
Professional development is critical for faculty and staff alike. Whether
through webinars, reading professional journals or papers, or attending conferences, we benefit personally and professionally when
we learn more about our jobs and how to do them better. NIC also benefits as we bring back new ideas, best
practices, and innovative solutions to problems.
One aspect of professional development we have
been exploring in Community Relations and Marketing is using our professional organizations’ competitions to see how we compare to others. It is a way to see
how our best efforts fare against others’ best efforts. If
we win, it validates our professional talents, and if we
don’t, then we can look to those who do win for ways
to improve our products.
I’m very proud that our staff continues to win John Martin
awards for their outstanding work. Earlier this year,
Stacy Hudson and Heather Butler were recognized for their work at the Spokane Regional Marketing and Communication Association’s (MARCOM)
annual competition. Both were also recipients of gold awards recently in the
regional competition for the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR), a professional organization comprised of community college members. Stacy and Heather received a gold for the 2010-2011 Alumni
Association newsletter and Heather received a second gold for the poster
that was created for the April 2011 “The British Are Coming” NIC Wind
Symphony concert.
Congratulations to Stacy and Heather for their great work!
-John Martin, vice president for Community Relations and Marketing
Long Range Visioning and Planning Update
College mission statement modified
Based on in-depth feedback provided by various campus and community
groups, the Long Range Visioning and Planning Committee made modifications
to its original draft of the college’s mission, vision, and values statements at its
Nov. 10 meeting.
The committee, which is comprised of 28 individuals, carefully reviewed the
recently conducted research, feedback from open forums, comments from the online community group discussion, and input from various group meetings, and
drafted several changes to its original statements.
The committee’s modifications are reflected in the following statements:
Mission statement: North Idaho College meets the diverse educational needs
of students, employers, and the northern Idaho communities we serve. We do this
through student success, educational excellence, community engagement, and lifelong learning.
Vision statement: As a comprehensive community college, North Idaho College strives to provide accessible, affordable, quality learning opportunities and is
the first choice of students. We are innovative, flexible leaders and are recognized
as a center of education, cultural, economic, and civic activities by the communities we serve.
The committee also spent time reviewing a list of core values that came about
from the discussions regarding the mission and value statements. A total of five
value statements are being considered and include Student Success, Excellence,
Community Engagement, Stewardship, and Diversity.
Feedback can still be provided by submitting comments to the online feedback
form on the Long Range Visioning and Planning website and through the community group discussion room that’s been created in MyNIC Courses.
The committee’s next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 8.

In Their Own Time
Black, Brown winning knitters, stitchers, and spinners
Chantel Black and Mandee Brown look to centuries-old hobbies to find
their zen. Black, assistant registrar, spins her own wool, knits, and crotchets.
Brown, administrative assistant in the Admissions Office, knits, crochets, and is
a grand champion cross stitcher in North Idaho. Both women won several blue
ribbons at regional fairs this summer.
“Just call me Cinderella,” joked Black, who only recently started spinning
her own wool using a big spinning wheel like the iconic Disney character. While
she learned knitting from her mom and crocheting from her grandmother, Black
said, with spinning wool “Basically, you just have to figure it out yourself. You
just have to sit down and try.”
Black is a newcomer to the fair circuit and still won blue ribbons for her knitted shawl and hand-spun yarn at the Spokane County Interstate Fair. The awards
are nice, she said, but it’s the serenity she finds in the act that keeps her going.
“It’s very meditative,” Black said. “You just get into this rhythm.”
Brown has been cross stitching since she was taught by her mom when she
was 12 years old. The oldest of two brothers and four sisters, Brown said, her
mom probably taught them all out of necessity.
“She had to find us all something to do,” Brown said.
Brown has been submitting different items to fairs for years now and won
a blue ribbon in landscape photography at the North Idaho Fair this year along
with her grand champion cross stitch.
“In this age with all our technology, for me, this is something more meaningful,” Brown said.
Kudos
Congratulations to the women’s volleyball team, which finished the regional
tournament as the Region 18 runner up and earned a trip to the National Junior
College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national championship in West Plains,
Mo., Nov. 17-19. Kudos to All-Region 18 and All-Tournament honorees Yang
Yang and Janele Vogt, as well as Sierra Pancho and Mariah Smith who received
All-Region honors. First-year NIC head coach Kandice Kelly received Scenic West
Athletic Conference (SWAC) Coach of the Year honors.
NIC is seeded seventh in the national tournament and will face No. 10-seed
Central Florida State College in the first round. The match will be video streamed
live at 9 a.m. (Pacific time) Thursday, Nov. 17 at www.ihigh.com/njcaatv/ and www.
psblive.com.
Campus News
Vehicle thefts reported
Campus Security has received two
reports of thefts from vehicles that have
been parked in campus lots this past
week. These have not been crimes of
opportunity where the vehicle is unlocked and valuables were left in plain
sight. The vehicles were locked and, for
the most part, the stolen items were not
clearly visible. Both of these incidents
occurred during the day, and the thief
may have acted like an individual who
was locked out of “his/her” car.
Everyone is encouraged to not
leave high-value items in their vehicle
unattended and to call Campus Security at Ext. 3310 if anything appears
suspicious.

Artist James Blackburn Craig to be featured in NIC Corner Gallery

be featured in the Boswell Hall Corner Gallery Nov. 14 to Feb. 2.
The exhibit includes acrylic
painted wall constructions, high-relief painted surfaces, bas-relief painted surfaces, and various mediums for
sculptures.
“The free-standing work reflects
my interest in the cultural dynamics
of this country based on observation
and the news,” Craig said. “The vehicle for expression is carved forms and
the use of ‘found’ objects (cultural artifacts and natural objects assembled
together).”
Rather than an opening reception, special events are scheduled at
the closing of this exhibit. The gallery
walk will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday,
Feb. 2 with the presentation for the
exhibit at 1 p.m. in Molstead Library
Todd Hall and the closing reception Craig's work "Harvest Moon."

Introducing
Open Positions
Meet Brian Leppert, new parking enforcer in Parking
Services. Leppert began working at NIC in September. A
former NIC student, Leppert is currently seeking a criminal justice degree and hopes to transfer to Lewis-Clark State
College. He has 10 years of law enforcement experience
and is a former emergency medical technician.
Originally from Spokane, Leppert moved to Post
Falls five years ago after he was married. He now has three
daughters with his wife, Sandra. He said he has wanted to
work at NIC since he first stepped on campus as a student.
Leppert said he is passionate about law enforcement
Brian Leppert
and “being a better person every day.” Being straight forward and candid is important to him, he said, and he strives to be fair, honest, and
impartial in his duties. The most gratifying aspect of his work is dealing with the
great people on campus, he said.
When he’s not at work, Leppert enjoys spending time with his family swimming or going to the park. Though far from being a master, Leppert said, he’s
familiar with American Sign Language and “loves ASL and the deaf culture.” His

Benefits Corner
Information about NIC’s FSA/HRA debit card
Some questions have arisen the last few months regarding the need to provide
documentation for services paid for using the Peak1 Administration Flexible Spending Account (FSA)/Health Reimbursement Account (HRA) debit card. The main
reason employees see more requests for receipts is the changes to the Inventory Information Approval System (IIAS), which is maintained by SiGIS (www.sig-is.org), requirements that became effective January 2011.
Some providers chose not to pay to be on the IIAS list, which in turn requires a
receipt be submitted by the participant. Provider participation is optional. Providers
on the IIAS list such as Walgreen’s do not require a receipt. But if a card is used at
a non-IIAS provider, no information is transmitted as to what the card was used for.
The only information Peak 1 Administration would receive is provider name, date of
service, and amount swiped. Unfortunately, under IRS regulations, more information is needed to substantiate the purchase. The website mentioned above provides
a list of participating merchants.
Questions regarding this notice should be directed to Peak 1 Administration’s
Member Care Department at (866) 315-1777.
