Keep those bellos labios supple and chocolaty
This homemade lip
concoction will not only
soften your lips but it’s
flavoured, flirtatious and
fabulous to pucker up in.

You’ll need
• Vaseline/petroleum jelly
• Chocolate/cocoa powder
• Olive/almond oil (or any
other essential oil)
• A ceramic bowl
• A container/an old lip balm
tin for storing the lip balm
First, take a spoonful of
Vaseline in a ceramic bowl
and microwave it for two
minutes. It will take a liquid
form when heated. Add
two spoonful of cocoa or
chocolate powder and a
few drops of olive oil to it.
Mix them together, stirring
thoroughly in the ceramic
bowl. Pour the mixture into
a heat resistant container.
Alternatively, you could
use an old lip balm tin.
Refrigerate it for 30 minutes;
that should be long enough
for it to solidify. Now just
take it out and apply it on
your lips. Don’t eat it though,
seriously.

Apple’s Mac line has updates and slashed prices
You may have plenty of accounts,
from social networks to online
banking. Each one requires
a password that is long and
somewhat unique to keep away
other users from breaching secure
lines. Most of us like to think
our passwords are good enough,
but you’d be wrong. Some of us
use the same password for many
accounts or simply log-in with
our Facebook accounts. While
it may seem convenient and
easy, it’s obviously not a wise
thing to do. Then again, trying to
remember 12 characters for each
one of our web accounts is a pain
in the back side.In order to keep
things as safe as possible, here are
a few tips to consider next time
you log-in:
• One very neat trick is to create
an entire password from a
single sentence. For example,
“I should have been born in
1972.” This phrase can result
to: Ishbbi1972
• You can also download offline password generators like
Random Password Generator.
• Just to double check to see
how secure your password is,
you can visit How Secure is my
Password? on the Internet. Just
type in your password and the
results will show how difficult
it would be for a PC to figure
it out.
• While many websites provide
a password checker and
verifications, it’s always
good to enable a two-stepverification for the websites
you visit.
• Keeping track is the real hassle.
Use password managers like
LastPass to keep track of all
your accounts so that you
don’t have trouble memorising
them.
• To keep things hidden and in
record in the easiest possible
way, you can use apps like
Evernote or simply write your
passwords down in a diary of
some sort, stashed away in a
secure place.

slight price drop and updated
specs,
you might
be finally
swayed to get yourself a Mac.
MacBook Pro with Retina Display
(15-inch, 2014)
The most significant change has
been its boost in RAM, improving
it from the 2013 version. It’s
essentially the same machine,
design and all, but the $100 price
drop could be enough to jump on
board. It still remains the best allround premium laptop.
MacBook Air (13-inch, 2014)
This machine has dropped to
iMac (21.5-inch, 2014)
Just recently added
to their line of Macs,
the entry-level
desktop is even more
affordable than its
siblings. But there’s
around $1,000, bumping up
its application and battery
performances. It’s relatively a quick
drop in price in less than two years
for the base model.
MacBook Air (11-inch, 2014)
Still considered the best
ultraportable laptop, you can grab
one of these just for 100 bucks less
than the 13-inch version. While it
has great battery life, you might
find it difficult to operate with its
smaller display.

It’s
pretty much a desktop version of a
MacBook Air. Yes, that means the
specs aren’t as powerful; nothing
you would expect from an actual
desktop. What you are getting
is the signature iMac industrial
design and build. There’s also the
option to add upgrades to the base
model, like a 1TB of space and
128GB Fusion drive. Now, we’ll just
have to wait and see what new toys
Apple brings us in September.

Keeping the team in sync just got easier
The majority of us have chatting
applications, like Whatsapp, to
keep us updated with others but
Asana keeps things a little bit
more professional. This free to
download productivity app for
iOS and Android keeps you and
your colleagues on the same page
without having to e-mail each
other. Rather than having a separate
group opened in
your chatting app,
you’ll be able to
converse any work
related topic, and
immediately jot
down a to-do list
that everyone can
view and check off.
Asana is actually a cross-platform
app that becomes convenient for
your teammates to access tasks
given and completed. The web
app has a similar layout to what
you would find in your Gmail
inbox, while the mobile version is
as simple as it can get. There’s no
difficulty in navigating or assigning
certain tasks to each other. The app
also allows you to add or attach
images and documents to each
given task. Each due-date can also
be viewed from either your Google
calendar or your iOS calendar. But
you’ll have to edit the details within
the app. You’ll be given the obvious
notification, of course. The web
version has a dedicated calendar,
since the screen real estate is much
larger.
It does have its limitations
however, but it’s not too much of a
hassle. The service allows up to 15
users, which should be just enough
for a single team of folks at the
office. You’re left with dragging,
dropping, rearranging all the tasks
to your liking so nothing seems out
of place or order.

A completely new Saga that promises to keep
things simple and sensible
The Saga is a product built on a
simple yet highly effective formula,
which is to offer a decently sized
sedan at an affordable price. And
what makes it even better is its wellhoned driving dynamics that add an
unexpected layer of enjoyment to
the package.
Exterior
The Saga has a stern appearance,
which is mainly because of
the covered 13-inch steel rims,
unpainted door handles and side
mirrors, and plastic covering the
slots on the bumper that would
otherwise be in use by a pair of fog
lights in higher-spec models.
Distinguishing it from the higherspec models is the “SV” badge on
the boot lid and the unpainted
plastic garnish above the number
plate. The ornamental finishing on
the tailpipe has also been discarded.
Appearance-wise, the SV makes
no effort to hide its entry-level
character. The truth is that, the Saga
is a difficult car to fault for honesty
to be sure.
Interior
On the inside, it isn’t much different
from the previous models. Seat
cushions are significantly firmer than
before, offering better support, but
inadvertently raising the hip level to
a point that makes clear visibility of
the instrument cluster impossible.
The new side mirrors come with
integrated turn signals but they are
still manually operated. Apart from
these two niggles, there is little less to
go wrong with the Saga’s ergonomics,
although a car with such simplicity
should not be difficult to get right
to start with. The centre console
has generous amount of spacing to
accommodate small items, while the
controls are placed within easy reach
and painless to operate. Contrary
to popular opinion about Proton’s
build quality, the interior was solidly
put together. Material choices are
unsurprisingly not exactly plush, but
you really can’t be expecting much
from an entry-level budget car.
Performance
As if the roads were not enough,
the cars too have become trash cans.
Oh mind it, these vehicles don’t even
belong to the people who litter in
them. Since littering the roads is too
mainstream and keeping used tissues
in the pocket takes up a lot of effort,
so where exactly can these people
riding in your car dump their mess?
Stealthily hiding from you and with
one quick movement of the hand,
they squeeze it into an untraceable
area in your car.
Mechanically, the Saga is yet to get a
transformation. It is still powered by
the same old 1.3-litre Campro IAFM
engine stirring out 94HP and 120Nm
of torque. Even the other drive train
components, such as the running
gear, and this includes brakes,
suspension, and steering, they all
remain unaltered as well.
Safety
On par with safety, Proton
implemented a number of
improvements for all variants of the
Saga. Making dual airbags a standard
feature and adding a three-point
seat belt for the centre passenger
at the back. The entire vehicle has
been structurally reinforced for
a better rigidity. Most noticeable
enforcements being a new set of
bracings in the area separating
the passenger compartment from
the boot. Even though, further
improvements are still possible, but
this upgraded version has earned the
Saga its three-star NCAP rating.
Uncomplicated and unpretentious,
the Saga SV is a sensible choice
for first-time buyers looking for a

fuss-free mode of transport. It
is one of those fill-it-up-and-go
type vehicles, that won’t have
the buyers cutting their teeth out
in the open road before finally
upgrading to something a little bit
more powerful or desirable.
AUTO CORRECT
Is it necessary to take care of
the battery?
Even if the manufacturer claims the battery is maintenance–free, it is
essential that you still take care of it to extend its lifespan. You can start
off by keeping the terminals clean. You can wipe the clamps with a dry
rag or even use detergent as required. Also check the battery casing from
time to time for any sign of damage. Bulges or cracks are signs that usually
indicate that your battery needs replacement.
If cars had tongues they would
scream out loud every time these
people munch on a burger and leave
behind the stench for the next couple
of days. You should keep tissues in
your car at all times, in case they don’t
have anything to wipe their hands
with, after devouring their food, your
car seats might just have to become
the napkin.
The windows are shut, the AC is
on, and it’s time to light a cigarette.
Even if you open the window, there
is a high chance that the ashes would
more or less remain in your car.
Now that they have littered and
made your car a food smelling gas
chamber, it’s time for goodbye.
However, how can any farewell
be without a little funfair. Literally
banging the door in the name of
closing it is the final nail in the coffin.

Strange addiction
My parents married me off to a man
from a good family a few months ago.
Everyone in this family has been kind
to me, except my mother-in-law. I think
she’s mentally unstable. In fact, I’m
pretty positive about it. One day, she
and I were home alone; I was sitting
in the living room watching TV when
she walks up to me with a knife and
threatens to kill herself, and accuse me
of being the murderer in the process. I
snatched away the knife and ran to my
room. After a few days she stows away
all the knives from the kitchen and
tells everyone she had a dream where
I knifed her to death in her bed. She
locks her room whenever we’re in the
house alone - which is pretty much all
day. She does not let me cook because
she is afraid I’ll poison her food. What’s
worse is that my husband actually
believes her! He thinks I did something
wrong and that’s why she has a bad
impression on me. No one at home
will even consider
that she might
need medical
attention. What
am I to do under the
circumstances?

the family doctor. Surprisingly though,
unstable people do behave oddly with
more than one person. I understand
your pain of not being heard by your
husband but you’d be surprised at how

become very tribal in these instances
and for good or bad, they feel they
have to defend people from their tribe
no matter what. So, although it is
painful, do not take it too personally. If
you love your husband, there is always
a way to
communicate.

My wife and I have come from very humble
backgrounds. We worked together and
worked really hard to buy ourselves a home,
a car and build a better life. I suffered from a
spinal injury that has kept me bedridden for
the last few months. All our expenses have
been diverted for my health care and it’s
getting difficult paying off our loans. Money
is tight and life is not as rosy as it used to be.
I feel helpless as I can’t really help my wife
out either. There’s a distance between us that
wasn’t there before and what’s worse is that
I think my wife has started dealing drugs
with her friends. I don’t feel like I can live like
this anymore, I am losing my head. Should I
approach the police or just suffer this life?

It’s not that easy to form a one step
solution to this problem. Given the
current situation and the direction that
things are headed in, it seems that it will
not be too easy to meet your financial
requirements now or in the future. You
may have to accept the inevitable. If your
wife has already gone down that path,
it is hard to say she will ever change. It’s
time you regain your sanity and your
security. Right now we would suggest
you take a time-out and live away from
your wife. See how you feel about her
and if you want this relationship to

while you’re ordering for yours). But just
don’t go out of your way and buy them
lunch after they’ve just returned to their
desks from the cafeteria. Steer clear of the
office doormat territory.

You could come across colleagues who are
genuinely nice to you because they want
to befriend you. Don’t negate their efforts,
return the courteousness and keep some
distance until you know for sure this one’s
a true friend.
When someone is being extra sweet and
nice to you at work, the first thing that
would naturally pop in mind is probably
“What do they want?” That’s a question
no one knows the answer to. They could
have ulterior motives for all we know.
The pervs are perhaps hoping to gain free
access to your heart (read: other precious
organs), while one of the ladies is trying
to make you spill the beans about when
you are promised your next promotion in
exchange for that homemade red velvet
cupcake she brought you this morning.
This nugget right here is desperate
to be liked and accepted, hence the
overdose of sweetness. They will pass
out without constant attention and can
get really passive-aggressive if you don’t
acknowledge them as friends because
they have been trying so hard to please

I’ve been dating this guy for about one and a half years now.
Within six months of the budding of our relationship he’d moved
to a different country. It is quite unlikely that we’d ever meet again
and I’m pretty sure he’s not here for the long haul. I really like him
and he likes me too - I can tell, but I don’t know if long-distance is
the way to go if we’re not sure we want to end up together. He has
never openly told me that he doesn’t want to marry me later on,
but I know for sure he won’t. Should I break it off?
You seem to be sure about him not wanting to marry you, so are
you keeping with him in the unlikely event that he will marry you
someday? After six months are there any plans to meet again? I
have little information, but from what you tell me, there is very
little chance he will come back to you. I think it is worthwhile for
you to make a last attempt to engage him into a conversation

but, here’s how to update it for a contemporary Dhaka setting

Having an afternoon tea party
is the perfect excuse to invite
guests over to your place – it’s
chic, classy and candid.

Menu:
Food
A common mistake which you
can make while planning the
menu for a high tea is in the
quantity. You might want to serve
a hundreds of different kinds of
cuisines. However, “the more the
merrier” ideology might not hold
true at a tea party. Opt for finger
food such as quiche, lemon tarts,
Turkish delights, macaroons,
pastries, chocolate mousse and
chicken lollipop. A high tea
would be incomplete without
the traditional English cucumber
sandwich.
Drinks
Skip the regular chai latte for
some fancy flavoured tea. Think
KK tea’s Jasmine and Tulsi
offerings, or Twinings Earl Grey
or chamomile with brown sugar.
Another fun riff you can try
without breaking the mood is an
assortment of flavoured ice teas
to go with the scrumptious finger
food.
Decor
We’re talking about your best
tea china, your fanciest table
linens and super sophisticated
silverware. The high tea is all
about the luxe and the elegant,
so consider this the appropriate
occasion to go all out.
If you’re reluctant to break out
the delicate tableware, you can
update your everyday china
by pairing them with bright
napkins and creative placemats.
Or just load the table with
candles and fresh flowers.
The point is to provide your

Sweet poison

Your sweet tooth could punch a nail through your heart
Termed as the world’s biggest
silent-killer, diabetes is one of
the most prevalent diseases and
more than one-third of patients
having this condition is unaware
of it. Adding to its deadliness are
the symptoms that are almost
too easily missed. If you have the
following symptoms, you probably
need to see a physician stat.

Excessive thirst and frequent
urination. As the blood is
gummed up with abnormal levels
of glucose, the kidneys do their
best to eliminate this excess sugar
- hence your need to use the rest
room so often. Your concentrated
blood and the loss of excess fluids
from your body are the reasons
behind you feeling thirsty at all
hours of the day.

Excessive weight loss. If
you’ve lost a lot of weight in an
abnormally short period of time say 10 to 20 pounds in two to three
weeks, chances are you are going to
have to live with insulin injections
for the rest of your life, however
long that may be. Since the insulin
hormone isn’t providing the cells
with enough fuel, the body thinks
you’re starving yourself and starts
breaking down all your proteins to
provide you with energy.

Excessive hunger. If you’ve
been experiencing sharp pangs
of hunger in your tummy, you
probably need to see your doctor.
Since all your glucose is running
around freely in your blood,
incapable of being useful to your
cells, your body makes you hungry
to attain more of the energy it
thinks it isn’t receiving.

Blurry, distorted vision. When
the blood glucose concentration
gets too high, it changes the shape
of the lens of your eye, thereby
causing blurred vision. Although
your vision will most possibly
improve once your blood glucose
concentration goes back to normal,
but do not let this go untreated for
too long. If you let this go rampant
it will probably cause blindness
and that is something completely
irreversible.

Tingling and numbness. If
you’ve been complaining about
tingling and numbness in your
body’s extremities, your nerves are
probably being damaged by all that
glucose. Yes, it will get better if you
start controlling your blood sugar,
but make sure you don’t take too
long as this damage may become
permanent.

Although it is quite new, its owners like to keep a low-profile to retain its exclusivity. Avenue T sits down with one of Cooper’s novelty
cake artists, Eram Cooper, who gives us better perception into their line of work

What do you think makes
Signature Cakes different
from other online cakeries?
A
There are actually a number of
things that set us apart from
other online cakeries. We work in
a 33,000sq feet factory and follow
strict food safety guidelines. I
believe we’re the dominating
brand when it comes to designing
big, fancy wedding cakes with
pristine designs and cuttingedge finishing - their masses
range from 20kgs to even 150kgs.
Whatever the design or mass,
we certainly have the ability and
experience to make them. The
level of neatness and consistency
in our products is very strictly
maintained and it is something we
pride ourselves in. Our clientele is
extremely exclusive and most of
them know us by word-of-mouth.

professional in terms of customer

How did the idea of Signature
Cakes come to you?
Signature Cakes is treated
less like a product and
more of a hobby by the owners
of Cooper’s Bakery. Our team
consists of some of the head
chefs of Cooper’s: Eram Cooper,
John Cooper and Simon Cooper,
with Eram Cooper as the main
artist. Since Cooper’s is already
one of the most well known
bakery brands in Bangladesh, we
thought of introducing high-end
cakes as one of its products something a little more exclusive
and niche. However, the more
we conceptualised the idea the
more it led to becoming a separate
entity. Eventually, Signature
Cakes came into existence in 2011.

designer cakes in a variety of
indulgent flavours, the standard
of which is comparable to any
international artisan bakery.
Initially we had difficulties selling
the concept of fondant icing since
most of our customers still prefer
cream icings on their cakes. We
also faced problems because
our humid weather interfered
with keeping some of the raw
materials stable. However, since
we are all experienced enough in
terms of food safety (Cooper’s is
certified in HACCP), we managed
pretty well. All our raw materials
and creating new designs. It truly
is an art, if you ask me. Basically,
we turn anything and everything
into a cake. A lot of engineering,
patience, love and care go into
making every cake and it shows
in our products. Till today, our
customers have had no complaints
and were simply wowed by our

A slice of heaven

For those with a sweet tooth
Pumpkin-carrot halwa
The silky, satiny, velvety and
luxuriant pumpkin-carrot halwa is
nothing but a sweet surrender! A
dreamy dessert that Bangladeshis
have been worshipping for ages.
They make this fudge type sweet
with a lot of warmth, love and
thousands of years of cultural
(culinary) pride. It only takes less
than 30 minutes to prepare and
serves 4.
Ingredients:
• 450g/1lb pumpkin and 2 large
carrots
• 550ml/1 pint coconut milk
(Regular whole milk will do just
fine)
• 1tsp cardamom seeds, crushed
• 2tbsp clarified butter or ghee
• 8tbsp sugar
Shondesh
The sun-drenched, dark-skinned,
soft spoken people of Bangladesh,
in all occasions and festivals,
treat themselves to a plethora of
sweets that smell like home. A
popular sweet seen in almost every
household at any celebration,
“Shondesh” is as uncommonly
soft and snowy as the fondest of
dreams; an elixir, a cure for all
ailments, like an answer to all
prayers. They are compelling in
their plainness; fancy words don’t
come into play. Making shondesh
(ricotta fudge) doesn’t get any
easier!
Ingredients:
• 2lb ricotta cheese, locally
known as chhanna. Make
your own cheese (procedure
described below) at home or
use store-bought products. The
homemade version is more
delicate in flavour
• 2tsp ghee (clarified butter)
• 2 cardamom pods
• Milk powder (optional)
• Sugar/honey to taste
• Crushed nuts eg almonds,
pistachio (optional)
Method:
• 3tbsp lightly roasted nuts
eg halved cashews, flaked
almonds, and pistachio
(optional)
Method:
Trim, peel and finely grate the
vegetables. Combine them with
milk and cardamom in a large
non-stick frying pan. Heat gently
and bring to a simmer, stirring
occasionally. Cook until the
vegetables are tender and almost
all the liquid has evaporated,
stirring frequently as the mixture
thickens. Next, add butter, sugar,
nuts and stir well. Once you’re
done, spread the halwa out on a
shallow pan to cool. When cool,
garnish with nuts and cut it into
desired shapes and serve.

In a nonstick pan, over very low
heat, add ghee; heat ricotta cheese,
a handful of sugar, cardamom pods,
milk powder, stirring constantly.
Cook for about 20 to 30 minutes or
until the mixture begins to separate
from the sides of the pan. Remove
from heat, make the desired shapes
using molds while the mixture is
slightly warm. Sprinkle crushed
nuts on top for a little extra flavour.
Chill for a few hours before serving.
Refrigerate the rest of the sweets.
That crimson red fantasy glaze at the
centre of each shondesh-flower is a
dot of liquid food colour.
How to make ricotta cheese:
Slowly bring 2 litres of whole
milk to a rolling boil in a heavy
pot over moderate heat, stirring
occasionally to prevent scorching.
Add 3 tablespoons of fresh lemon
juice, then reduce heat and simmer,
stirring constantly, until the
mixture curdles for about 2 more
minutes.
Pour the mixture into a sieve over a
large bowl and let it drain for 1 hour.
After discarding the liquid, chill the
ricotta, covered; you can store it in
the refrigerator for 2 days.

Akhtar Furnishers in Jessore
Recently, Akhtar Furnishers has inaugurated a new outlet at Bhola Tank
Road in Jessore. Formally, this branch has been inaugurated by the director
of FBCCI and the chairman of Akhtar Group KM Akhtaruzzaman. President
of Jessore Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Mizanur Rahman and
managing director of Akhtar Group, KM Rifatuzzaman were present as
special guests at the opening ceremony. Chief operating officer of Akhtar
Group Sushil Gosh along with other eminent personalities were also
present at that time.
Cycle the World for Save the Children
Dettol, the flagship brand of Reckitt Benckiser Bangladesh Ltd., has taken
an innovative initiative to raise awareness and funds for Save the Children.
Under the banner of “Cycle the World for Save the Children” and in
association with BDCyclists, 40,075kms - the circumference of the Earth, will
be covered by the cyclists. A launch event for this campaign was recently held
where over 200 cyclists joined. Already 8,700kms have been covered in the
first three days of the event. During the campaign, Dettol pledged to provide
50 helmets to the cycle commuters, to promote safe cycling. Mahbub Baset,
marketing director, Reckitt Benckiser Bangladesh and Sri Lanka and Hossain
Mohammad Sarram, manager, Digital Marketing, and senior representatives
of BDCyclists were present on the occasion.
US Ambassador talks at IUB
Mr Dan W Mozena, the ambassador of the US Embassy, Dhaka, attended a
roundtable discussion on Climate Change and Bangladesh on August 13 at
Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) campus in Bashundhara, Dhaka.
International Centre for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD) at
IUB organised the discussion. Prof. M Omar Rahman, vice chancellor, IUB,
delivered introductory comments while Dr Saleemul Huq, director, ICCCAD,
delivered the welcome remarks on the occasion. Among others, Prof. Milan
Pagon, pro-vice chancellor (designate), Prof. M Ali Hossain, dean, School
of Environmental Science and Management, IUB, Dr Karl Wurster, deputy
director, Economic Growth Office, USAID, Mr Nathan Sage, control and site
officer, USAID and visiting researchers from the USA were present.
