With those words, Jesus reaffirmed what He tries to teach throughout His ministry. You may be aware that more than half of His parables dealt directly with this concept of “possessions and ownership.” Stewardship, of course, makes it clear that what we may have, possess, or own is merely a gift for which we are the caretaker, the steward. Yet, this remains one of the main stumbling blocks to a stewardship way of life. We live in a society that places great emphasis on possessions — the car we drive, the house we live in, the latest technological advancements. This attitude has been prevalent to humankind for thousands of years. The way the Lord addressed it in His time is still quite applicable today. He cautions us that the measure of our life is not found there, however. The parable of the rich man with the good harvest makes it all absolutely clear. The Lord closes the parable by saying, “Thus will it be for all who store up treasures for themselves, but are not rich in what matters to God” (Lk 12:21). Stewardship challenges us to get our priorities correct and to understand that what may seem important in this life is not important in the next. Holy Communion to The Sick/Homebound If you or a relative needs to receive Holy Communion at home, please call our parish office to schedule the visit of a member of our team of extraordinary ministers for the Holy Communion for the sick and homebound. The Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Aug. 4, 2013 100% Participation & One Year Pledges... Look and See what’s new!! Father David’s Travels... Greetings to all of you! Last week I had the opportunity to do a wedding for two of our parishioners at the Basilica of Notre Dame. It was my first time in this beautiful Church and I just cannot say enough about how kind and professional the staff was in helping me to navigate the inner workings of the wedding Mass. The aura of the Basilica was amazing and the guests at the wedding were moved by the ceremony as well as the wedding couple and myself. Although it was held at 9 o'clock in the morning, everyone was there on time ready to go, including the priest which can be a rare feat! We also were able to tour the Campus of Notre Dame which included the famous football stadium and locker room. We even got to tap the two signs that the players tap on their way into the stadium. It was a thrill realizing that we were part of the mystique of all the famous people who also touched those signs. I was also glad that the signs were low enough for me to touch since my jumping abilities have thoroughly diminished through the years. Anyway, I offer congratulations to David and Jill Parker in their new life together. May the Graces received on that special day continue to be with you both. While at Notre Dame, we also got to play their new golf course which was quite beautiful. I haven't picked up a club since February and played rather well despite the toughness of the course. Unfortunately, my bones hurt the next two days afterwards which means I better start exercising again or I'll turn into a tree. But I digress... Well, that is all for now. May God continue to bless your Stewardship as we continue to proclaim the Kingdom to all the world. Peace, Fr. David Capital Campaign Update $4,969,887 in pledges $3,669,057 in cash Get your Tiles Today. The Cross is filling up fast! The Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Aug. 4, 2013 Year of Faith 2012-2013 By: Kevin Fritz We continue to examine the story of Abraham in the Book of Genesis (chapters 12-22) in order to consider how his journey of faith can serve as a model and inspiration for our own journey of faith. This week we reflect on Genesis chapter 14. Living with faith and trust in God is not always easy. The world around us is filled with evil and discord. This reality touches Abraham. He had suggested that he and Lot separate not because of differences between them but because there was not enough land to support both of them. Abraham wants to avoid any possible strife between them. As time goes on, Abraham learns that there is a battle between several kings in the area. Lot was living in the area of Sodom and we learn that the king of Sodom was defeated. "The victors seized all the possessions and food supplies of Sodom and Gomorrah and then went their way, taking with them Abram's nephew Lot, who had been living in Sodom, as well as his possessions." (Genesis 14:11-12) When Abraham hears the news, he gathers 318 men and goes out in pursuit succeeding in recovering "all the possessions, besides bringing back his kinsman Lot and his possessions, along with the women and the other captives." (Genesis 14:16) The defeated king of Sodom comes out to meet Abraham after his victory and begs him: "Give me the people; the goods you may keep." (Genesis 14:21) This certainly must sound very tempting to Abraham but he tells the king of Sodom that he will not take any of the goods for himself. Abraham's purpose was to rescue his nephew Lot and his family not to enrich himself with material goods. As Abraham tells the king of Sodom: "I have sworn to the LORD, God Most High, the creator of heaven and earth, that I would not take so much as a thread or a sandal strap from anything that is yours, lest you should say, 'I made Abram rich.'" (Genesis 14:22-23) How Catholics Can Live the Year of Faith (October 11, 2012 through November 24, 2013) Suggestions from Bishop David Ricken of Green Bay, Wisconsin, chairman of the Committee on Evangelization and Catechesis of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Invite a friend to Mass. The Year of Faith may be global in its scope, focusing on a renewal of faith and evangelization for the whole Church, but real change occurs at the local level. A personal invitation can make all the difference to someone who has drifted from the faith or feels alienated from the Church. Everyone knows people like this, so everyone can extend a loving welcome. New Altar Server Training Once again Abraham remains faithful despite the evil and discord in the world around Registered parishioners who have children him. Abraham remains faithful even in the face of the temptation to enrich himself who are nine years old or older and who further with material goods and earthly power. He went into battle with the purpose have received their First Communion, may of rescuing his nephew Lot and his family and he remains true to this purpose. attend a training for new altar servers. I would like to thank you for coming to visit the "Christmas in July" event and giving your support to Be-Cos. We did not have a lot of nativities, but some of you got great prices and some were very generous with their donations. One of the donations made was for $100. We do not know who it was, but we are very sure that HE/SHE is an angel. One of the songs in the Spanish Mass says: “Hay angeles en este lugar, subiendo y bajando en todas direcciones", (There are angels in this place, rising and falling in all directions), and I am sure he/she was one of these. Well, thanks to all of you, and for the generosity of Jim and Connie Messina. Be-Cos collected $520 dollars for our brothers and sisters in need. Thank you very much.
