A VISIT TO JESUS’ HOMETOWN - AWESOME!
Well, it certainly was a privilege to participate in my second Vacation Bible
School at Shepherd of the Glades. At any one evening, we had up to 13 or so
children with the last names of Ramos and Quintana and 8-10 adult participants
and another 8-10 adult leaders and helpers learning together about when Jesus
was a child in his hometown of Nazareth. I wish to initially thank Elaine Sima
who investigated many potential programs and chose this one before she went
North for the summer. You might remember that Elaine directed last year’s
program by flying here from Michigan just for last year’s VBS week.
Jeannie Rudge consented to be this year’s director, and I thank her for her
AWESOME JOB! Her detailed assessment is on the next page. My sincere
thanks to Megan Cianflone who did an awesome job with music leadership, as
well as baby juggling. I thank Cindy Quehl, who was the main lesson leader as
the character of Jesus’ mother, Mary; and Margie Carr, who played Mary’s unbelieving, nosy
neighbor. I thank the craft leaders: Linda Boyd, Bonny Dery and Lynn Wahlberg, who also did the
Food Market. I thank Nadine Kelly and John Carr, who were tribe leaders, as was I. Thanks to
cooks, Dan Rudge, Leslie Gjesdahl, and Betsy Skrede. Thanks to Debbie & Don McWaters, who
led Fun & Games, and son, Matt and friend, Gabriela, who sang for us all. My thanks for all the
beautiful photos from Nick Lehr. All came to a wonderful celebration as we worshipped in Hanson
Hall using our new computer and projector (gifts of our Let the Good Shepherd Lead Campaign) to
learn and sing our VBS message and witness first hand our Hanson Hall Nazareth town. I thank
those helping with set-up: Dave Kelly, Lillian Hydes, and Alexa Turino, who also helped all week.
On Tuesday, July 19, I thank those who took down the Nazareth Town: Joanne Hogan, Bernie
Schmidt, Debbie Schiltz, Rich Yearwood, and Lynn Dickerman, who also did publicity. If I missed
your name in these words of thanks, I’m certainly sorry. As I said, it was an awesome week and it
is such an awesome privilege to be sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ as your Pastor.

“HOMETOWN NAZARETH WHERE JESUS WAS A KID”

H O M E TO W N N A Z A R E T H N O TAT I O N S . . .
Thank you so much to everyone who participated and / or made our wonderful journey possible
as we visited the dusty town of Nazareth, just as Jesus was beginning his ministry around
Galilee. We heard about Mary’s son, Jesus, where the local children called him the Son of God.
We also learned about Jesus as a “kid” as told by his mother, Mary, in their home town of
Nazareth! We had a fun, intergenerational experience where we visited the marketplace each
day with shops, crafts, and snacks. We enjoyed fun music and games and learned about our
“tribe”. We are so proud to report a miracle as Mary’s neighbor, Eunice, began to secretly
wonder if it is really possible that Jesus - the boy down the street - could be the Messiah.
Alleluia! By the end of our journey, she did!
On day one of our journey, after a wonderful meal of kosher hot dogs and beautiful music, we
found out from Mary that nothing is impossible with God. Mary was with child, and Jesus would
have a family. We came together and formed our tribes: Benjamin, Judah, and Asher. We also
visited the Woodshop and Farmer’s Market in our Market Place. Much fun was had as we
practiced sweeping clean our hearts to hear the word of God.
On day two, again, after a wonderful meal of Israeli Tacos and singing God’s praises, we
discovered that Jesus had a name, and so do we. Each of our names has a special Christian
meaning that reflects our love of God. We visited the Synagogue School, the Bead Bazaar, and
the Farmer’s Market. Again we played the games Jesus played as a child.
On day three, we ate our wonderful meal of Galilean Flatbread Pizza and sang God’s praises
during celebration. We also began thinking about our Tribal Cheers. We discovered that Jesus
had a home and so do we in our Father’s house. Much fun was had in the Market Place at the
Bead Bazaar, the Wool Shop and, as always, the Farmer’s Market. We jumped rope for Jesus
and shared much joy as we played.
On day four, we began our celebration with another wonderful meal of Nazareth Nachos and
much singing of our love of God and service. Mary shared with us how Jesus went to church just
like us, and what he would experience. We began to witness the change in her neighbor,
Eunice’s heart in her belief that Jesus was the Son of God. We experienced a wonderful game of
playing ball with palm branches.
On our last evening together, we shared our meal of Leviticus Leftovers, and much joy in
celebrating God’s word. We learned about the importance of service to one another, not only to
our own tribes, but in our community as well. We listened as Mary told us of the miracle that
Jesus performed, changing water into wine. It was then that we heard Eunice witness that Jesus
was the Son of God. We visited the Bead Bazaar, completing our necklaces, and the Farmer’s
Market, learning about how to plant the Word of God. We closed with a musical celebration and
much joy.
I wish to express my whole hearted appreciation for all who made this week a success. I have so
enjoyed this experience and send out a big “Congratulations and Way to Go through the Grace of
God” to our Celebration Leader, Shopkeepers, Tribe Leaders, Dinner / Food Providers, Fun &
Games Leader, Hometown characters, Mary & Eunice, Decorators, Sound System Providers,
and our wonderful on site photographer.

LAUGHTER IS THE BEST MEDICINE . . .
PUNS FOR EDUCATED MINDS:
☺ A dog gave birth to puppies near the road and was cited for littering.
☺ A grenade thrown into a kitchen in France would result in Linoleum Blownapart.
☺ Two silk worms had a race. They ended up in a tie.
☺ A hole has been found in the nudist camp wall. The police are looking into it.
☺ Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.
☺ Atheism is a non-prophet organization.
☺ Two hats were hanging on a hat rack in the hallway. One hat said to the other: “You stay here;
I’ll go on a head.”
