permits the family of the deceased to remember
them through the purchase of an item that is both

Greed Breeds Fear
Dear Friends,
In Luke Jesus teaches us about greed. The rich man hoards his harvest into his barns. His possessions give him an illusion of
security and a false and ironically empty way to define himself, ignoring the fact that none of his amassed wealth, not even his
life was truly his own. There are strings attached to all possessions. What matters ultimately is who we are, not what we have.
The right of an individual to own property is accompanied by a relative responsibility for the common good. The acquisition
and maintaining of material goods is never to become an end in itself, but rather must always be a means to living a truly human
life in solidarity with God’s earth and all the people who live on it.
Jesus challenges all greedy behavior and the controlling and dehumanizing systems it generates in the world. Greed has many
forms, in individual persons, business and in government, and steadily metastasizes as a cancer on a global scale, infecting individuals, nations and institutions worldwide. If greed reigns, we will see a world dangerously divided between “haves” and “havenots” and social “progress” will leave the latter behind. History teaches us of the resulting displacement and emigration of the
“have-nots” in the Third World to find work and survival in the First World.
The challenges to Arizona’s and other anti-immigrant laws highlight the need for comprehensive reform of federal immigration policy. President Obama and many government officials attest to this. It is ever more urgent for us as Catholics and Christians to learn the facts and become involved in a positive way to help ensure that resulting policy changes will truly serve the common good.
Our parish joins with others to support Comprehensive Immigration Reform, and this Wednesday we’ll be delivering hundreds
of letters, signed by our parishioners and those of five other churches, to Peter King, our US Congressman.

Jesús nos enseña acerca de la codicia. El hombre rico acapara su cosecha en sus graneros. Sus posesiones le dan una ilusión de
seguridad y una manera falsa e irónicamente vacía para definirse a sí mismo, ignorando que su riqueza acumulada, ni siquiera su
vida era suya. Hay secuencias unidas a todas las posesiones. Lo que importa en última instancia es quien soy, no lo que tengo.

le monde moderne.
Les défis de l'Arizona et d'autres lois anti-immigrés soulignent la nécessité d'une réforme globale de la politique fédérale en
matière d'immigration. Le président Obama et de nombreux responsables gouvernementaux y attestent. Il est de plus en plus urgent pour nous les catholiques et les chrétiens de connaître les faits et de nous impliquer de manière positive pour faire en sorte

Notre paroisse parmi tant d'autres appuient la réforme complète de l'immigration, et ce mercredi, nous allons donner des centaines de lettres, signées par nos paroissiens et de cinq autres églises, à Peter King, notre représentant au Congrès américain.

Peace Begins With Us

The United States Drops the
First Atomic Bomb on Japan
This years marks the 68th anniversary of the
world’s entry into the atomic age.
Hiroshima, Japan, became the first city in the
world to suffer the wrath of a nuclear attack.
The bomb’s direct and indirect casualties were
estimated at 140,000.
The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park was built
on the bombing site not only to remember
those casualties and the nuclear horrors of
that bomb, but to serve as a reminder of the
importance to pursue and establish world-wide
peace.
Sadako Sasaki was a young Japanese girl born
in 1943, who on the threshold of
adolescence, developed leukemia from the
effect of the radiation caused by the nuclear
bombing of Hiroshima.
Sadako was told that if she folded 1000 paper
cranes the gods would grant her wish to get
well.
As she started to fold the cranes, she said “I
will write peace on your wings and you will fly
all over the world.”
“This is our cry, this is our prayer: Peace in the
world.”
Before she died in 1955, she had folded 644
cranes.
Dear Jesus, Prince of Peace, Touch our hearts
with understanding, wisdom, and compassion.
Create within us a deep and committed desire
to be peacemakers.
Have mercy on us all, and in that mercy, help
us to heal your world.

LOVING OUR ENEMIES
Everyone has enemies. These
adversaries are people we perceive to be
against us, or those who actually cause us harm
by their attitudes and actions.
They may be persons we know well or
strangers in a foreign land. When it comes to
following Christ today, I can’t imagine anything
more difficult than loving an enemy.
Each person who loves an enemy reflects
the heart of Christ. Jesus never deserved the
opposition, resentment, jealousy, hatred, and
derision of his numerous foes.
It took immense courage and faith for him
to reach out with openness and forgiveness
instead of responding with abhorrence and
condemnation.
I am constantly amazed when I hear of
people forgiving those who caused them great
hurt: the one who raped them, or killed their
child, or ruined them financially, or bombed
their village or destroyed their marriage.
Even when we are hurt in a small way, it is
difficult to respond with love. The natural
response to an enemy is to want to return the
hurt, to get even.
Every ounce of God’s grace is needed to
turn toward an enemy with the heart of Christ,
a heart that listens, communicates and eventually desires well-being for the enemy.
Each story of forgiveness challenges me to
ponder how I treat my enemies.
Negative thoughts, put downs, harsh judgments, prejudicial language, hostile words—
whether I direct these toward someone I know
or toward suicide bombers, terrorists, drug
dealers, pedophiles, dictators and murderers—
these do not belong in my mind and heart if I
am a follower of Christ.
The challenge remains
strong today: a true
follower of Christ never
deliberately wishes or causes
harm to anyone.

GENNESARET RETREAT
This retreat is especially designed for persons who live with a serious illness. It offers a
respite, a quiet time, an oasis, to enable one to continue the journey. The retreat
focuses on God’s love, His forgiveness, and His faithfulness.
The Care: Many gentle and attentive volunteer health care professionals are available to
you during the weekend to help see that your medical needs are met. Along with our
priest and medical team additional volunteers are there to assist you to help make your
weekend comfortable.
The Place: Montfort Spiritual Center is located in Bay Shore on the south shore of Long
Island. It is situated on the Awixia Creek and Pond and is surrounded by fields and
meadows. It is a place of quiet and reflection that both nurtures and renews one’s spirit.
It is fully accessible to the handicapped and we can provide some equipment you may
need during the weekend. There are semi-private bedrooms with views overlooking
Montfort’s spacious property. The Chapel is beautiful and peaceful.
The Program: The retreat weekend schedule is designed to celebrate the love of the
Lord Jesus Christ through prayer times, talks by our priest directors, through quiet time
and ample periods of rest. It begins on Friday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. and ends early
Sunday afternoon. There is time for sharing, celebrating, prayer together and alone.
The Details: There is no cost to you for this retreat. Expenses are paid through the generosity of individuals, parishes and church communities who value retreat
experiences.

Ethiopian/Somali Orphan needs Temporary Host Family
Please consider hosting, (even for a short time), a 17 year old here for medical treatment
from an Ethiopian orphanage. Etetu is a sweet, quiet young girl who has learned English from
staying with various host families during the past year. She needs a place to stay while
continuing her treatment and learning English. If you can do a weekend or a year, or take her
for the day shopping, to the beach or to a doctor’s appointment, we’d love to hear from you.
Operation Hearts and Home, (www.operationheartsandhome.org), is a licensed (501C-3),
Long Island based charity registered with the NY Office of Family and Childrens Services that
seeks to improve the lives of orphans worldwide.

Los Estados Unidos deja caer la primera bomba atómica en Japón.
Este año se cumple el 68 aniversario de la entrada del mundo en la
era atómica.
Hiroshima, Japón, se convirtió en la primera ciudad del mundo a
sufrir la ira de un ataque nuclear.
Víctimas directas e indirectas de la bomba se estima en 140.000.
El Parque Memorial de la Paz de Hiroshima fue construido en el sitio
del bombardeo no sólo para recordar a los muertos y los horrores
nucleares de la bomba, sino para servir como un recordatorio de la
importancia para perseguir y establecer la paz mundial.
Sadako Sasaki fue una joven japonesa nacida en 1943, que en el
umbral de la adolescencia, se le desarrolló leucemia debido a los
efectos de la radiación causada por el bombardeo nuclear de Hiroshima.
Se le dijo que si Sadako dobló 1.000 grullas de papel los dioses le
