Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
Queridos hermanos en Cristo:
The second reading this Sunday reminds us that we are in need of correction and to receive with a humble heart without resentment or anger. We are
all in need of correction from God. Indeed we are! Conversion, for all of us,
is a journey that will end on the day when, through his infinite mercy, we are
admitted to the communion of saints.
La segunda lectura de este domingo nos recuerda que estamos necesitados de corrección y que debemos recibirla con un corazón humilde, sin
resentimiento ni enojo. Todos necesitamos la corrección de Dios. ¡No hay
ninguna duda! Para todos nosotros, la conversión es un proceso que dura
hasta el día en que, por la infinita misericordia de Dios, seamos admitidos
a la comunión de los santos.
Original sin, though cleansed by baptism, has left us wounded. Our appetites, our will, our intellect and our emotions are out of synch and we do
not always do what we know to be good.
At times, it is difficult for us even to discern what is good. Our own per-
sonal history has also affected our understanding. Our sin and the sins of
others have left a mark in us. It requires effort, docility and humility for us
to form our conscience and to act in a manner consistent with our call to
holiness.
In an essay entitled “Pecado y corrupción” published long before his election, Pope Francis discussed the difference between sin and corruption. He
has also made this distinction in one of his daily homilies in the chapel of
Sancta Martha in the Vatican. In that essay, the future Pope acknowledges a
fundamental truth of our human condition and current situation: we are all
sinners.Yet he warns us to name our sin, identify it and call it for what it is,
in order to present it to the Lord who is always ready to forgive and assist us
with his grace so that we can continue to grow in holiness.
Sin is real, it is concrete, there are specific actions in my life that are sinful
and need to be transformed by grace. We are all in need of correction, painful as it may be at times. The second reading from the Letter to the Hebrews
does not present any foolish illusions. Correction is painful. It is difficult to
allow God to change our lives. We cling to our disordered passions and to
our sin. We are filled with pride. Yet the Lord does not want to take away
anything that is good in our lives, but desires to bring them to perfection.
He wishes to lavishly fill our hearts and lives with the fullness of his love,
but first he needs to remove the clutter that fills our lives weighing us down.
He wishes to make us holyand will do it, if we let Him. We need to name
our sins for what they are, concretely, and humbly present it to the Lord to
be incinerated in the burning fire of his passionate and infinite love. If we
fail to do that, the Pope warns, we run the risk of becoming corrupt. The
person who is corrupt no longer recognizes his or her sinfulness. Sin is for
the corrupt person either a vague reality that has no real consequence in his
or her life, or worse still, something to be proud of.
The corrupt person, says the Pope, even boasts of his or her corruption as
if it was something desirable and worth imitating. “Sinners, yes; corrupt,
no!” is a recurrent outcry of Pope Francis. If we look intently at Christ and
heed the voice of his spotless bride, we can realize in our lives the holiness
that God offers and achieve that elusive happiness that so many people and
idols promise but only God can deliver.

El pecado original, aunque ha sido borrado por el bautismo, nos ha
herido. Nuestros apetitos, nuestra voluntad, nuestro intelecto y nuestras
emociones no están en armonía y muchas veces no hacemos lo que sabemos que es bueno.
A veces nos cuesta incluso reconocer lo que es bueno. Nuestra historia
personal también ha afectado nuestra comprensión. Nuestros pecados y
los pecados ajenos han hecho mella en nosotros. Se requiere esfuerzo,
docilidad y humildad para formar nuestra conciencia y actuar de manera
coherente con nuestra vocación a la santidad.
En un ensayo titulado “Pecado y corrupción” publicado mucho antes
de su elección, el papa Francisco, comenta la diferencia que existe entre
estos. También hizo esta distinción en una de sus homilías diarias en la
capilla de la Casa Santa Martha. En ese ensayo, el futuro papa reconoce
una verdad fundamental de nuestra condición humana y nuestra situación
actual: todos somos pecadores. Sin embargo, nos advierte que debemos
identificar nuestro pecado, llamarlo por su nombre, para presentárselo al
Señor que está siempre dispuesto a perdonar y a asistirnos con su gracia
para que podamos seguir creciendo en santidad.
El pecado es real, es concreto, hay actos específicos en mi vida que son
pecaminosos y deben ser transformados por la gracia. Todos necesitamos
esa corrección, por más dolorosa que sea. La segunda lectura de la carta a
los Hebreos no nos ofrece ninguna ilusión. La corrección es dolorosa. Es
difícil dejar a Dios que cambie nuestras vidas. Nos aferramos a nuestras
pasiones desordenadas y a nuestro pecado. Somos orgullosos. Sin embargo, el Señor no quiere quitarnos nada de lo bueno en nuestras vidas,
sino que desea llevarlo a la perfección. Quiere llenar nuestros corazones
y nuestras vidas con la abundancia de su amor perfecto, pero primero
necesita remover todo aquello que se ha acumulado que nos oprime. Quiere hacerlo y lo va a hacer, si lo dejamos que nos lleve a la santidad.
Debemos identificar nuestros pecados concretamente y presentarlos humildemente al Señor para que los incinere en el fuego ardiente de su amor
apasionado e infinito. El papa nos advierte que si no lo hacemos, corremos
el riesgo de corrompernos. La persona corrupta ya no se da cuenta de su
condición pecadora. El pecado es para el corrupto una realidad difusa que
no tiene consecuencias reales en su vida o, peor aún, algo de lo que se
enorgullece.
La persona corrupta, dice el papa, incluso alardea de su corrupción
como si fuera algo deseable o digno de imitar. “¡Pecadores sí, corruptos
no!” es el grito recurrente del papa Francisco. Si miramos intensamente
a Cristo y oímos la voz de su esposa inmaculada, podremos realizar en
nuestras vidas la santidad que Dios ofrece y así alcanzar esa felicidad esquiva que tanta gente y tantos ídolos prometen pero que solo Dios puede
realizar.
