La publicación del Diccionario Enciclopédico Dominicano de Medio Ambiente llena un vacío cientifi co y educativo a la vez que responde a una
importante necesidad nacional: conocer sus recursos naturales para poder
respetarlos, cuidarlos y gestionarlos de una mejor manera. Igualmente, él
contribuye a una mayor conciencia sobre una importante área de nuestra
identidad y patrimonio nacional.
The publishing of the Dominican Encyclopedic Dictionary of the
Environment fills a scientific and educational void, as it is the answer to a
great need of national importance: the knowledge of our natural resources
so we can respect, care for and manage them in a better way. In addition, this
Dictionary contributes to a greater awareness in regards to a fundamental
aspect of our national identity and heritage.
Las condiciones para el éxito en cualquier área de la actividad humana aplican perfectamente en el área de medio ambiente y recursos naturales: un
mejor manejo requiere de conocimiento, de una rigurosa y meticulosa educación, de un entendimiento que, una vez adquirido, fomenta el aprecio y
el respeto, promueve una actitud de amor y orgullo y así, nuevamente y con
más fuerza, incita a más estudio, respeto y buenas prácticas. O como dijeron
los poetas: “sólo se ama lo que se conoce”.
The conditions to achieve success in any field of human activity can be
perfectly applied to the field of the environment and natural resources:
better management requires knowledge, requires a rigorous and meticulous
education, an understanding which, once it is obtained, promotes appreciation
and respect, motivates an attitude of love and pride, thereby driving, with
ever greater strength, research, respect and good practices. Or, to put it in
words of poets: “we can only love that which we know”.
Así pues, el Diccionario que tienen ante ustedes representa un paso en ese
sentido. La obra constituye la piedra angular en el camino de un aprendizaje
cientificamente sólido, pedagógicamente bien formulado y presentado de
una manera moderna y agradable, que facilita una lectura placentera.
And so, the Dictionary that you have before you, represents a step in that
sense. The book is the cornerstone in the path towards a knowledge that is
scientifically solid, pedagogically structured and presented in a manner that
is modern and friendly, and which leads to pleasant reading.
El viejo proverbio indígena nos recuerda que tenemos que tratar bien a la
Tierra porque “…no nos la dieron nuestros padres sino la tenemos prestada
de nuestros hijos.” Nuestro país ha sido bendecido con una gran riqueza y
diversidad de recursos naturales y con un pueblo emprendedor, talentoso y
gentil. Es nuestra responsabilidad conservar y desarrollar esas herencias de
una manera sostenible. Una de las grandes tareas por hacer es llevar el conocimiento al alcance de todos, fomentar la conciencia y, consecuentemente,
nutrir las buenas prácticas.
An old native proverb reminds us that we need to treat the Earth well
because “…Earth is not a gift from our parents. It is a loan from our
children”. Our country has been blessed by a wealth and diversity of natural
resources, and our people are entrepreneurial, talented and gentle. It is our
responsibility to preserve and develop this heritage in a sustainable fashion.
One of the greatest tasks at hand is to bring knowledge to everyone, to
promote awareness, thus nurturing good practices.
Nos llenan de orgullo muchas acciones en pro del medio ambiente realizadas en nuestra tierra como son, por ejemplo, las numerosas campañas de
reforestación o el constante incremento de áreas protegidas. La co laboración entre el sector público, privado y nogubernamental tiene una fuerza sin
precedentes en los temas medioambientales, originando actividades y proyectos de gran impacto en todo el territorio nacional y con una trascendencia internacional. El medio ambiente es un eje transversal importante en las
polti cas públicas y en la elaboración de las leyes.
Los logros alcanzados son importantes pero las tareas pendientes nos comprometen a seguir trabajando con brío y dedicación. Confi amos en que este
Diccionario hará un aporte de gran signifi cado en ese sentido y preparará
el terreno para otras obras y actividades que nuestro país y la comunidad
internacional necesiten.

We are filled with pride by many actions in favor of the environment
that have taken place on our land, such as, for instance, the numerous
reforestation campaigns, or the constant increase in protected areas. The
current collaboration in regards to the environment, among the public,
private and non-governmental sectors is unprecedented, and has originated
activities and projects of great impact in the entire national territory, and of
international relevance. The environment is an important transverse axis in
public policies and in the creation of laws.
The achievements obtained are important, but the tasks that are yet pending
commit us to continue working with vigor and dedication. We trust that this
Dictionary will make a significant contribution in that sense, and will lay
the groundwork for other endeavors and activities that our country and the
international community may require.

Una vez más, la Fundación Global Democracia y
Desarrollo (FUNGLODE) y su institución hermana en los Estados Unidos, Global Foundation for
Democracy and Development (GFDD) ofrecen al
público nacional e internacional una publicación
que reúne la investigación científica, realización
artística y esfuerzo didáctico, resaltando en esta
ocasión el patrimonio natural de la República Dominicana.
Dentro de su misión de aportar a la investigación, promoción de conocimiento y concienciación, FUNGLODE y GFDD, a través de esta publicación, presentan un estudio organizado y sistematizado del medio ambiente y
de los recursos naturales de la República Dominicana, en un solo volumen,
de una manera estéticamente agradable, atractiva y accesible a una amplia
gama de lectores, desde escolares hasta profesionales en el área.
La primera versión en línea (www.Diccionariomedioambiente.org) del Diccionario Enciclopédico Dominicano de Medio Ambiente fue publicada en
el año 2009 y desde entonces sigue brindando la más completa y actualizada
información sobre el medio ambiente y los recursos naturales del país. A
invitación del equipo editorial de la versión digital del Diccionario, muchos
usuarios han hecho sus aportes al contenido así como facilitado sus comentarios y sugerencias. Un diverso público de científicos, estudiantes, aficionados, profesionales y curiosos han visitado dicho portal, han disfrutado de su
contenido e interactuado con nuestro personal científico, técnico y gráfico.
A lo largo de dos años, hemos ido profundizando, ampliando y puliendo el
contenido a la vez que enriquecíamos nuestra base de imágenes y gráficos.
Esta versión impresa representa la culminación de dicho trabajo y aunque
es un importante hito en la evolución del proyecto, creemos que no es el
último paso. Confiamos en que el Diccionario despierte la curiosidad y el interés entre los que todavía no son tan conocedores del tema, aporte nuevos
conocimientos a los que están inmersos en sus estudios e incite a los expertos a contribuir con aún más información. Esperamos que sea un valioso
libro de referencia en aulas escolares y universitarias, bibliotecas y hogares.
Sobre todo deseamos ardientemente que fomente aprecio y respeto hacia
la increíble riqueza, belleza y diversidad de recursos naturales dominicanos,

Once again, Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE)
and its sister institution in the United States, Global Foundation for
Democracy and Development (GFDD), bring national and international
readers a book that encompasses scientific research, artistic production and
didactic efforts, on this occasion with a special emphasis on the Dominican
Republic’s natural heritage.
True to their mission of supporting research and promoting knowledge and
awareness, FUNGLODE and GFDD, present through this publication, an
organized and systematic study on the environment and natural resources of
the Dominican Republic, in a single volume that is pleasant, attractive and
accessible to a wide range of readers, from school students, to professionals
in the field.
The first online version (www.Diccionariomedioambiente.org) of the
Spanish dictionary, Diccionario Enciclopédico Dominicano de Medio
Ambiente was launched in 2009 and has since been providing the most
thorough and up-to-date information on the country’s environment and
natural resources. Following an invitation made by the editorial team of
the online version of the Dictionary, many users have contributed to the
contents and provided comments and suggestions. A diverse audience of
scientists, students, enthusiasts, professionals and curious visitors, have
accessed the site, enjoyed its wealth of information and interacted with
our scientific, technical and graphic personnel. Throughout the past two
years, we have continuously added to the content, making it deeper and
wider, and fine-tuning it, while at the same time increasing our database of
photographs and charts.
This printed version is the culmination of all that work, and although it
constitutes an important milestone in the evolution of the project, we firmly
believe it is not the last step. We trust that the Dictionary will raise curiosity
and interest among those who are still not very knowledgeable in the field,
that it will bring new knowledge to those already immersed in the study of
the topic and that it will motivate experts to contribute more information
to the project. We hope that this will become a valuable reference book in
school and university classrooms, libraries and homes.
But above all, we strongly wish that it will drive appreciation and respect
towards the overwhelming richness, beauty and diversity of the Dominican
Republic’s natural resources, inspire great care and love for it, and strengthen
our national pride.
I invite you to browse through it, enjoy it, learn from it and apply the
knowledge gathered within it!
