Mi Casa Es Tu Casa – My House Is Your House
According to William Butler Yeats Education is not the filling of a pail, but the
lighting of a fire. I think church is much the same. Our faith is symbolized by the
Easter fire/candle. We must continually attend to the Easter fire, because we are Easter
people (not people of Lent). The risen Christ fills us with a burning desire to love one
another, honoring our differences - ‘there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit,
many rooms in our father’s house. Diversity makes us more complete. Unity magnifies
our joy.
Welcoming a visitor to our St. James Parish is not only a beautiful gesture but it keeps
this fire alight. Jesus tells us to go out and make disciples of all the nations, calling all
into the Universal body of Christ. We are not to turn it inward, rather the Easter fire
must be brought to the darkness. According to Pope Francis “When the Church does
not come out of itself to evangelize, it becomes self-referential and then gets sick.” We want to stay healthy. Like the
disciple before us we must prepare ourselves in our home community to bring the good news to others in need,
especially those looking to us to satisfy their spiritual needs. Hospitality begins at the doors of our parish.
Many of us have recently read the book “Rebuilt” By Fr. Michael White and Tom Corcoran. It is a kind of manual on
building stronger Catholic Church Communities. It is inspirational and practical. We can begin implementing a major
premise of the book – be friendly and show hospitality to each other especially to our visitors. This is a major tenet of
many who write or speak about building a stronger faith community. A few years ago I heard Rick Warren author of
“The Purpose Driven Life” give a talk at Religious Education Congress in Anaheim. The talk was titled the “Purpose
Driven Parish”. His conclusions concur with White and Corcoran. Visitors are more likely to return if they feel a
warm and friendly reception. This is not surprising. We all want to feel welcomed into a community of friends.
Hospitality is vital to the life of a parish. And like anything that is done well, it must be intentional, practiced, and we
must note when we are not doing it well. Lack of friendliness does not bode well for the life of the Church. It is the
canary in the coalmine. Sharing our joy is crucial – it is the fruit of the seed that fell on good soil. It is a consistent
message from the beginning. “He said, "Come in, blessed of the LORD! Why do you stand outside since I have
prepared the house, and a place for the camels?" (Gen 24:31)
How is hospitality or welcome expressed after the initial greeting. Those who have visited other cultures know that
there are cultural differences in hospitality. And this new millennial culture – this electronic age of personal devises,
hospitality is becoming a lost art. In many homes the TV, though not watched is often left on even while guests are
visiting – background noise. Separately families and friends spend much time alone even when in the company of
others. Alone we drive in a car, answer emails, surf the web, text or listen to our I Pods, often in public places oblivious to our neighbors. “The distracted life” I call it- texting at meals, parties, seminars and workshops, even
while on retreat. We rarely spend uninterrupted time with each other. Remember the great conversations you would
have on a long drive with a friend. The fraternal intimacy of that moment is now shattered every time one answers a
call or text (oh yes- what were you saying).
The next generation may need to be attentive in learning hospitality. We may all be due for a refresher course. How
to - make small talk, discuss complex or abstract issues on the fly without google, engage in some Socratic dialogue,
or even the timing of humor or persuasive speech. How will we make the time to reflect, meditate, and pray if we
have no capacity, no practice of surviving in stillness engaging only with our thoughts and feelings. Today without
electronic devises we quickly become bored or worse, anxious.
With everything there is a silver lining. Although we live “the distracted life” I think there is a growing number of
young people and others who are attracted to meditative practices. Taize, seems to be especially popular. Perhaps the
Church’s wonderful meditative practices will once again come into vogue and assist in reaching our ultimate goal To know, love and serve God: to be filled with the warmth and light of the Easter fire.

mini-retreat for ladies
St. James Women’s Guild will sponsor a mini-retreat for ladies
on the morning of Sat., Sept. 20, 2014. The program will focus
on the theme of “God’s Love Helps Us Lay Our Burdens
Down” and the presenter is Janice Carleton of Portland, Oregon. Details will be announced next month.

El Corazón de las Sagradas Escrituras
¿Alguna vez te has preguntado dónde está el corazón de todas las Escrituras?
El Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica número 125 nos dice que “los Evangelios, que son cuatro, son el
corazón de todas las Escrituras ‘por ser el testimonio principal de la vida y doctrina de la Palabra hecha
carne, nuestro Salvador’” (DV 18).
Los evangelios son: Mateo, Marcos, Lucas y Juan.
Los tres primeros son conocidos como evangelios sinópticos porque presentan entre sí tales semejanzas que
pueden ponerse en columnas paralelas y abarcarse de una sola mirada, que es a su vez el significado de la
palabra sin-óptico. Pero presentan también entre sí numerosas divergencias.
Pero ¿Cómo es que se formaron estos evangelios? En la formación de los evangelios se pueden distinguir
tres etapas (Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica no. 126):
1. La vida y la enseñanza de Jesús. La Iglesia mantiene firmemente que los cuatro evangelios, “cuya
historicidad afirma sin vacilar, comunican fielmente lo que Jesús, Hijo de Dios, viviendo entre los
hombres, hizo y enseñó realmente para la salvación de ellos, hasta el día en que fue levantado al cielo”.
2. La tradición oral. “Los apóstoles ciertamente después de la ascensión del Señor predicaron a sus
oyentes lo que Él había dicho y obrado, con aquella crecida inteligencia de que ellos gozaban, instruidos
y guiados por los acontecimientos gloriosos de Cristo y por la luz del Espíritu de verdad”.
3. Los evangelios escritos. “Los autores sagrados escribieron los cuatro evangelios escogiendo algunas
cosas de las muchas que ya se transmitían de palabra o por escrito, sintetizando otras, o explicándolas
atendiendo a la situación de las Iglesias, conservando por fin la forma de proclamación, de manera que
siempre nos comunicaban la verdad sincera acerca de Jesús” (DV 19).
Símbolos de los Cuatro Evangelistas
Al entrar a nuestra iglesia ustedes puedes ver en las puertas de vidrio las figuras de los cuatro evangelistas,
cada uno con un animal que los representa. Los cuatro autores de los Evangelios (San Mateo, San Marcos,
San Lucas y San Juan) han sido relacionados simbólicamente con los cuatro seres vivientes del Apocalipsis:
"El primer ser viviente se parece a un león; el segundo a un toro; el
tercero tiene el rostro como de hombre y el cuarto es como una águila
en vuelo" (Apocalipsis 4,7).
1. A San Mateo se dio una criatura con semejanza humana (hombre),
porque su evangelio comienza con la generación humana de Cristo…
Este es el evangelio más directo y en el cual Jesús es presentado más
humano.
2. La imagen dada a Marcos es la de un león. Su figura es el león alado,
representa la resurrección. El león fue el símbolo de San Marcos,
porque abre su evangelio con la misión de Juan el bautista, “la voz de
uno que clama en el desierto.”
3. La imagen dada a Lucas es la de un toro/buey porque es un animal
de servicio y sacrificio; además, Lucas ve a Jesús como el gran siervo de
los hombres y como el sacrificio universal por todos los hombres.
4. El águila es la imagen dada a Juan porque es el único que puede mirar al sol directamente y no encandilarse. Juan es el autor del
NT quien tiene la mirada más penetrante en los misterios eternos, las verdades eternas y la mente de Dios.
Vayamos al corazón de las Escrituras para conocer más a Jesús. Conozcamos sus milagros y enseñanzas por medio de la lectura y
meditación de su palabra en los evangelios.

LA GRACIA ESTÁ EN TODAS PARTES
La gracia está en todas partes. La gente de fe actúa
según esa creencia. Los cristianos estamos llamados a
buscar dentro de lo más profundo de nuestro ser para
encontrar la presencia de Dios allí. Estamos llamados
también a buscar afuera de nosotros para encontrarlo allí
también.
La realidad de la gracia ha sostenido y alimentado a
la gente por encima de todo. La Iglesia nunca se cansa de
contar la historia de los panes y los pescados. Se cuenta
seis veces en los cuatro evangelios. Nos podemos
imaginar a los dudosos Apóstoles metiendo la mano en
las canastas y encontrando pan y más pan. Anticipamos
el final. Los Apóstoles se cansaron antes de que se
acabara el pan.
En otro tiempo y lugar, Isaías también habló de una
abundancia, esta vez de agua, miel y rica leche. Dios
siempre es un dador de dones y nosotros los
beneficiarios. Nuestra respuesta es la doxología o
alabanza. En la segunda lectura Pablo proporciona las
palabras y la actitud. La alabanza está en todas partes.
Escuela de la Palabra
La Escuela de la Palabra es un grupo de oración que se reúne
semanalmente, en el cual se lee y se reflexiona sobre lecturas
bíblicas, este grupo es guiado y supervisado por la fraternidad
misionera “Verbum Dei”
