A Social Justice Committee’s “Share the Spirit” interview with a parishioner
who has done or is doing outreach to those in need
SHARE THE SPIRIT!
JO RUTKOWSKI AT HALEY HOUSE
“Share the stew,” Josephine Rutkowski might say, as she works at her computer to arrange the monthly
lunchtime meal for the male guests at Haley House in Boston.
Jo’s commitment to Christian service actually sprouted from seeds planted early on by her mother. Mom responded open-heartedly to any perceived need. She stressed to her seven children that God wanted generosity towards one’s neighbors. In his letter (1 Peter 4:10), Peter says, “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful
stewards of God’s grace in various forms.” It seems that, what comes naturally to Jo because of her mom’s good, persistent example,
is God’s holy will.
So 40 years ago as a parishioner at St. Jerome's in East Arlington, Jo willingly agreed to prepare beef stew in her own kitchen for
Haley House. One might imagine that her own six children caught their mother’s sharing spirit; seeing her gather up five pounds of
bite-sized stew meat, five pounds of potatoes, and two pounds of carrots, plus whatever other soup enhancements she had on hand.
The beginning for Jo, and that was long ago. But not long after her home-based contributions, Jo heeded the same Spirit’s call for an
on-site pair of hands. The first time she went to the soup kitchen, her task was slicing bread. Yet the bread was “hard as a rock.” Jo
then began picking up fresh bread for the hungry, homeless men. After all, who would enjoy “hard-as-a-rock bread”?
The once-a-month stew drew 75 or so hungry men. Yet how could just five pounds of meat and potatoes, plus carrots, and whatever
else a generous volunteer might think special, be enough for so many? It was hardly a miracle. Eight willing cooks, working separately, made eight beef stews, which were then combined in Haley House’s kitchen and served, along with fresh bread, apple juice, and a
small dessert.
What, exactly is Haley House? It is a Catholic Worker house in Boston’s South End. As their website explains, this community had
its start 50 years ago. It was a basement apartment fitted simply with bed and board, no questions asked, for destitute, homeless men
whom the founders, Kathe and John McKenna, saw freezing on the streets of Boston’s poorest neighborhoods. But Haley is much
more than a meal. It is a community committed to helping break down social and economic barriers among people, like the original
hospitality house founded by Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin in New York City.
Today Jo Rutkowski no longer makes a stew or serves the guests at Haley, but uses her gifts of organization and coordination, plus
her ability to inspire other volunteers who are willing to share the “spirit-of-the-stew.” Thus she makes sure God’s graces are reliably
and lovingly shared with neighbors very much in need. For this, we thank Jesus, who shares his Eucharist with all of us needy diners.

ST. JEAN BAPTISTE CHURCH
NEEDS YOUR CHANGE!
Have you gotten a chance to take a
look at the bright green cloth covering
the clear collection box in the foyer
of the church? The colorful cloth is a
table cover from the country of
Togo. It is draped over the collection box for Father Nelson’s
parish, St. Jean Baptiste, in Togo. Please feel free to drop any
donation into the box as you walk into St. Eulalia Church.
We welcome any loose change hanging around the house
(under the cushions, in your pockets, in the car)! All contributions will be given to Fr. Nelson to help build St. Jean Baptiste Church. We hope to present a check to Fr. Nelson at the
end of his stay this summer. Our first goal is $5000 to fund
an altar. Thank you so much for all your generosity!!!

MATTERS LITURGICAL
Feast of the Holy Trinity: Today we celebrate the Feast of
the Holy Trinity, first celebrated in the fifth century in monastic communities as an expression of praise to the triune God
and then, in the 14th century, extended to the entire western
church. The feast celebrates the mystery of God’s selfrevelation through the experience of the people of Israel, the
disciples of Jesus and the Christian people since Pentecost.
The Body and Blood of Christ: Next Sunday, May 29th, is
the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. This feast, originally called Corpus Christi, arise in the 13th century Belgium
in response to debates about the real presence and as a result
of an upsurge in Eucharistic piety. Its extension to the entire
Western Church was first decreed by Pope Urban IV in 1264.
The feast celebrates the mystery of the nourishing and enduring presence of the body and blood of Christ in the Eucharist.
As a special way of commemorating this feast, an indoor Eucharistic procession and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament will immediately follow the 11:00 AM celebration of
the Eucharist.
Following the 5:00 PM celebration of the Eucharist there will
be an outdoor procession with the Blessed Sacrament to a site
in the conservation land and where we will hold Benediction.
This is a good event for families to share in and publically
profess our belief in the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist.
Eucharistic Practice at Saint Eulalia Church: Holy Communion is offered at every Mass, under the symbol of bread
and wine, which is the fullest expression of Christ’s presence
in the Eucharist. We encourage the reception of the Eucharist under both species, in response to Christ’s command,
“Take and eat,” “Take and drink.”
A reminder: Communion from the cup can be received by
drinking directly from the cup or by intinction. Communicants choosing the latter should not dip the host in the chalice.
Instead, the communicant should hand the host to the communion minister who will dip the host into the cup and then
place the host on the communicant’s tongue.
ALTAR FLOWERS IN MEMORY OF
A LOVED ONE
You are invited to remember a deceased loved
one or a special celebration with a floral arrangement for the altar. Please see our parish
secretary, Laura MacMullin, if you are interested in making this memorial.
Flowers for this weekend are donated in memory of Marie
Burke by her family.

TRIP TO THE HOLY DOOR AT THE CATHEDRAL
Join us on Sunday, June 5 as we depart from the church
parking lot by bus at 2:30PM for the Cathedral of the Holy
Cross in Boston. During this Year of Mercy, we will have
the opportunity to gain a plenary indulgence walking
through the Holy Door at the Cathedral, fulfilling the usual
conditions of confession, receiving Communion, and praying for the intentions of the Holy Father. All conditions do
not have to be met on the same day, but within a reasonable time of about two weeks.
After the visit to the Cathedral where we will also have a
tour of the facility, we will visit St. Brigid Parish in South
Boston, the site of the original St. Eulalia Church. After a
fire, it was rebuilt as St. Brigid Church which now contains a chapel dedicated to St. Eulalia. We will conclude
our afternoon with a stop at Sullivan's at Castle Island,
where you will have an opportunity to purchase some of
their famous refreshments. We should be back to the
church about 7PM. Cost of the transportation is $10 per
person. Make your reservation with payment to Laura in
the parish office as soon as possible, as this is sure to be a
popular event.

and to grow deeper in Christian faith by reflecting and praying
in the Ignatian tradition. Volunteers serve two days a week, and
meet monthly with a Spiritual Reflector and other IVC members.

If you are hospitalized and would like to receive
a pastoral visit . . .
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act
(HIPAA) is a Federal Regulation designed to protect the
confidentiality of medical records and other personal health
information. Patients being admitted to hospitals and other
health care institutions will be asked for permission to include their name in the hospital’s directory and/or religious
census sheet. Patients who wish to receive Communion and
visits from their parish priest or pastoral visitor must agree to
be listed on the census sheet. If a patient says “no” to this
request, visiting clergy and pastoral visitors will not have
access to his or her name. If you are hospitalized and would
like to receive a pastoral visit, please be sure to allow your
name to appear on the hospital’s religious census. This
authorizes parish and hospital spiritual caregivers to visit
you during your hospitalization.
