STEPHEN HOLDEN
NYT SYNDICATE
N the lineage of real-life Davidand-Goliath movies in which
intrepid seekers of the truth
investigate malfeasance in high
places, The Whistleblower
deserves an honourable mention.
This earnest film may not be as dramatically coherent or as gripping as
Serpico, All the President’s Men, Erin
Brockovich and Silkwood, to name
four much-decorated Hollywood prototypes. But its revelations are, if anything, more devastating and far more
immediate than the dirty deeds uncovered in those predecessors.
The directorial debut of the
Canadian
filmmaker
Larysa
Kondracki, this gruelling exposé of
human trafficking in postwar Bosnia
teeters in an uneasy balance between
quasi-documentary and fiction. Its
most sickening moment shows the
rape and torture of a rebellious young
prostitute smuggled from Ukraine into
a Bosnian backwoods brothel while
other young “whores of war,” as one
character dismisses human trafficking
victims, are forced to watch.
But for all its high-mindedness, The
Whistleblower, filmed largely in
Romania, has a choppy, fumbling
screenplay (by Kondracki and Eilis
Kirwan) that lurches between shrill
editorialising and vagueness while
sorting through more characters than
it can comfortably handle or even
readily identify.
As Kathryn Bolkovac (Rachel Weisz),
the movie’s slingshot-toting American
heroine, marches into a political minefield, she seems strangely immune to
danger until near the end of the film.
The Whistleblower ultimately fizzles by
withholding any cathartic sense that
justice was done, or ever will be done,
once Kathryn spills the beans to the
British news media.
When the story begins, she is a
police officer and a divorced mother
living in Lincoln, Nebraska. Prevented
from transferring to Atlanta to be
nearer to her daughter, she impulsively accepts a lucrative job as a United

Nations peacekeeping officer in Bosnia
in 1999. The blunt, fearless Kathryn
embraces her new job with a gusto
that immediately raises eyebrows
among her cynical co-workers, who
look down at the Eastern Europeans
they have been charged to help.
Weisz’s feisty performance is the
strongest
element
of
The
Whistleblower. She imbues Kathryn
with the same stubborn-verging-onfanatical zeal that Rose Byrne (whom
Weisz physically resembles) brings to
her character, Ellen Parsons, in the television series Damages, with which
The Whistleblower shares a strain of
paranoia.
After demonstrating her mettle in
prosecuting a case of domestic violence, Kathryn is offered a job in the
United Nations Gender Affairs Office,
working with the police to investigate
rape, domestic abuse and sex trafficking. Her gumption earns her the admiration of Madeleine Rees (Vanessa
Redgrave), the head of the United
Nations Human Rights Commission,
who remains an enigmatic, undeveloped character. The party-loving
Kathryn also begins a casual affair
with Jan (Nikolaj Lie Kaas), a fellow
peacekeeping officer.
Kathryn comes face to face with the
truth when she journeys to a bar in the
countryside, where she discovers a nest
of imprisoned young prostitutes who
are so frightened that they refuse to talk
to her. When she reports back to her
smirking boss, Fred Murray (David
Hewlett), and he mockingly asks her if
she’s “going Columbo,” she realises that
he is part of a conspiracy of silence
among her male co-workers. Even
Laura Leviani (Monica Bellucci), the
chilly head of the repatriation program,
is of no help: she insists that bureaucratic rules leave her unable to rescue
prostitutes whose passports have been
confiscated by their kidnappers.
As Kathryn gathers evidence, including Abu Ghraib-like snapshots of the
girls and their johns, a fuller picture
begins to emerge of a lucrative, farreaching operation involving the police
and United Nations peacekeepers,
many of them protected by diplomatic
immunity. The more
noise she makes to
United Nations higherups, the more apparent
it becomes that she is
viewed as a troublemaking nuisance, and
her job is terminated.
The movie concentrates
on
Kathryn’s efforts to
coax two terrified
Ukrainian girls,
(Roxana
Raya
Condurache) and
her best friend,
Irka
(Rayisa
Kondracki, the
director’s sister),
to identify their
kidnappers.
Kathryn recklessly promises Raya
protection if she
agrees to talk, with dire
consequences. Near the
end of The Whistleblower,
a scene is awkwardly inserted in
which Raya’s mother discovers that
immediate family members sold her
daughter into slavery.
Kathryn is so outraged by her discoveries that she has no room for
panic. Her lack of caution suggests
that only someone blindly immune to
intimidation would rattle so many
cages without fearing for her life.
Some of the horrors in the book
Bolkovac wrote about her experiences,
including the fact that many of the
trafficked girls were much younger
than those shown in the movie, are
softened.
Kathryn’s only ally is Peter Ward
(David Strathairn, in ominously
brooding, conspiratorial mode), an
internal affairs specialist who, in the
film’s most suspenseful scene, helps
her smuggle evidence out of her office.
The Whistleblower tells a story so
repellent that it is almost beyond
belief. Its conclusion — that in the
moral quagmire of war and its aftermath, human trafficking and corruption are collateral damage — is unutterably depressing.

Shakira is seventh most popular person on Twitter
Brad Pitt felt no sparks with Nicole Kidman
COLOMBIAN songstress Shakira has become the seventh most-popular person on
the Twitter social network, with nearly 7.42 million followers, her publicist
announced on Monday. The artist exceeds in numbers of Twitter fans of other
celebrities and performers such as Ashton Kutcher, Taylor Swift and Oprah Winfrey,
according to statistics compiled by the social network. Shakira’s total number of followers exceeds that of Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Barack Obama, Katie Perry, Britney
Spears and Kim Kardashian, in that order. In addition, Shakira leads the Twitter list of
most-followed Spanish-speaking celebrities, it was noted in the same communique.
ACTOR Brad Pitt had initially pulled out of his 2005 film Mr. & Mrs.
Smith because he felt a lack of chemistry with the movie’s original
actress, Nicole Kidman, claims a book. The film’s producer Arnon
Milchan says Pitt, 47, was unhappy as there were no sparks with
Kidman. But when he cast Angelina Jolie, Pitt called back to say he
was happy to play the role, reports thesun.co.uk. It was quite a lifechanging decision for Pitt, who was then married to Jennifer Aniston,
as he fell in love with Jolie, and broke his marriage with Aniston.

Hadiqa Kiani
ADIQA Kiani is a multi-platinum selling,
multiple award winning Pakistani singer,
song writer, and an occasional TV host.
She is widely known as the best female
pop singer the country has to offer. She is also
ranked as the second highest female selling pop
artist of Pakistan, trailing only Nazia Hassan.
H
Early life:
Kiani was born in Rawalpindi, Pakistan and grew
up in Lahore. She is the third of three children to
Khawar (Hadiqa’s mother), a principal of a local
government girls school. When she was three years
old, her father died from natural causes, and thus
the family were left to fend for themselves. Kiani has
spoken about the difficult experiences of not having
a relationship with a father during her childhood.
Her mother, was nevertheless, very brave throughout their upbringing, she added. Khawar began
working as the principal of a government all-girl
school while Kiani and her older siblings were growing up. After her father’s death and the resulting loss
of financial support, the family had to use the school
as a temporary home. Kiani and both her siblings
had a talent for music, and so her mother enlisted
her in the Pakistan National Council of the Arts.
Kiani then performed in front of a crowd of a thousand people at Liaqat Memorial Pindi Hall.
At an early age, she began showing an interest in
singing and music. Whilst living in Rawalpindi, she
went on to study at Viqar-un-Nisa Noon Girls High
School Pindi. She represented Pakistan in
International Children Festivals in Turkey, Jordan,
Bulgaria, and Greece, winning various medals along
the way. She also used to be on Sohail Rana’s Rang
Barangi Dunya; a weekly musical show for children. Kiani thanked her family for being supportive
in her singing career, citing them as “patient and
enthusiastic with a
heart of gold”.
Career:

2002: third album Rung
Kiani released her third album Rung in
September 2002, for which she’d chosen the album
title herself. Prior to Rung’s release, Kiani sang an
OST for a drama called Cheray. The song also made
the final listing on Rung. The first single released
from Rung was Yaad Sajan. The song helped the
album sales propel throughout August and
September 2002 and was an instant hit. It did not
however make it as big as Dupatta or Boohey
Barian from her album Roshni, but generally got
great appreciation.
2006: single Mehr Ma
Kiani began working on a single-song project with
UK based producer Khiza on his album Loyal To
The Game, in 2006. The lead single Mehr Ma featured Kiani’s vocals. She also appeared in the music
video directed by Sohail Jawed. The song was a massive success in Pakistan, and was seen as a great turn
for Kiani after her ballads in Rung. Kiani performed
the single at Lux

was considered the

Management tip: Leave your bad day at work
Lifestyle
guide
BAD DAYS at the office are many times unavoidable, but there are ways to separate from the troubles without needing to go
home and kick the cat, says Harvard Business Review. The Management Tip of the Day offers quick, practical management
tips and ideas from Harvard Business Review and HBR.org (www.hbr.org). Today’s management tip was adapted from
Guide to Managing Stress. “We all have them: those days when nothing goes right. To avoid taking the stress home, try
doing three things at the end of a bad day:
1. Clear your mind. Take a few deep breaths. Think about the things that matter to you outside of work. Prepare yourself
mentally to walk out the door and leave the day behind.
2. Do something easy. Send off a report, reconcile a balance sheet, or reply to a few straightforward e-mails. Get some
things off your to-do list to restore a sense of control.
3. Get up and leave. Once you’ve completed the task, don’t check your email once more or stop by someone’s desk. Just
leave.”
Caring for
stroke victims
HUMA QURESHI
GUARDIAN NEWS SERVICE
T
ONY Nicklinson is listening to
the radio when I arrive. He’s
been hoisted into his wheelchair, and sits alone in a room
overlooking his garden. Seeing
me, he raises his eyebrows by way of hello.
I introduce myself, ask how he is and tell
him I’ve spent the afternoon with his lovely daughters. He nods stiffly. Then his eyes
well up.
Tony had a stroke in 2005 and now suffers from locked-in syndrome: he’s
trapped inside his body, aware of everything going on but unable to engage with
it. Paralysed from the neck down, Tony
can’t speak but he can think, hear and feel.
He communicates through blinking, twice
for no, once for yes.
There is no cure for locked-in syndrome,
a condition most commonly caused by a
stroke severing the connection between
the brain and the body. The syndrome
received widespread public attention in
2007, through the French film The Diving
Bell and the Butterfly, based on a book of
the same name by Jean-Dominique
Bauby, who had been editor of French Elle
magazine. Following a serious stroke of
his own, Bauby was left paralysed save for
his left eye, which he used to communicate
by blinking at an alphabet board.
Tony recently made the headlines
because of his legal campaign for the right
to die. He has said, through blinking at letters on an alphabet board as Bauby did,
that he is “fed up” with life.
It’s not easy to imagine the frustration
or the sadness unless you meet somebody
with the condition. But having seen my
dad go through something similar, I feel
able to understand what Tony and his
family are going through.
I had just turned 23 when my dad suffered the first of four consecutive strokes,
each a destructive wave violently washing
a part of him away. We had just celebrated
my birthday together - my parents visiting
me while I was studying in Paris, a fortnight before the strokes struck. It was to
be the last time I saw my father well. It was
the last time I took a photograph of my
parents together, his arm thrown casually
around her shoulder, surrounded by
papery pale pink tulips. That picture,
taken seven years ago and now on my bedroom windowsill, is my last memory of my
dad as he was.
One evening I was revising for my final
exams when my mother phoned. She told
me my dad was in hospital - he had a
stroke.
I didn’t really register what this meant. I
didn’t know what a stroke was - I had
assumed that they happened to old people, and my dad, in his early sixties, wasn’t
old. I did know it must be bad for my mum
to be telling me just days before my finals.
She said he was OK and put him on the
line; he even spoke to me and said he was
fine - but his voice was thick, heavy,
slurred. It didn’t sound like him. I put the
phone down, puzzled and alone. My legs
felt heavy. I knew things weren’t good.
Uneasily, I packed a rucksack, throwing in
revision notes and a change of clothes. I
imagined I’d be back soon. I wasn’t.
From being the happy, healthy man in
the picture on my windowsill, my father
was transformed: half-paralysed, confined
to a wheelchair, fed by a tube. In hospital
for just over 18 months, he wasn’t completely paralysed like Tony. But he gradually shut down and was still very much
taken away from us, even while he was
alive.
At the beginning, he could still talk, but
his whispered words eventually faded to
silence and sadness. He could move his
right hand, and by chance we discovered
he could write precious, shaky scribbles. It
was my mum who figured out, later, that
he could say yes or no by blinking; she
picked up on it by chance, asking him if he
was OK and slowly realising there was a
pattern. At first, we weren’t sure but the
more we practiced with him, the more we
realised it wasn’t just a haphazard movement, but a way to communicate.
The hospital months were tough. They
took a toll on us all, although what we
went through was not as bad as what my
dad endured. Physically, we were exhausted; emotionally, wiped out. My brothers,
settled in London, travelled tirelessly
home to the Midlands every weekend.
My dad, the clever, funny, winsome doctor, had been my emergency call in times
of panic or stupidity, my lawyer to fight my
corner, my friend. At the worst of times,
closer to his death, when his pain was
unbearable and his body but a shell, I carried a mantra in my head - “That’s not my
dad, that’s not my dad” - repeating it
silently in my mind to remind myself of
the person he was, really was, before the
strokes.
Huma Qureshi’s father was
paralysed by a stroke, unable to
talk. Family life was changed for
ever. She meets other people who
have experienced a similar loss
My mum and I became each other’s
company and best friends. We spent every
day in the hospital, convincing nursing
staff to let us in earlier and leave later than
visiting hours. We learned how to wash his
hair in bed, how to change his position,
how to avoid bedsores. It was draining,
but not as miserable as it sounds. A multitasker, my mum balanced work and caring; I studied for the exams I never took
while helping her with his exercises,
holding up flash cards to see if he could
say them or blink recognition, reading the
paper aloud and talking animatedly to
keep his attention (“Never cry in front of
him,” they said). Some days were good,
happy; it was hard not hearing his voice,
but we knew he was still there. Other days,
when an infection took hold or a bad set of
blood results came, not so good.
My dad was 67 when he died. I made it
to the hospital in time to say goodbye. I
remember being startled by the strength
in his hand as he squeezed with his last
breaths.
Locked-in syndrome isn’t classified as a
disease, so there are no precise statistics
on the number of people suffering from it.
It’s also hard to identify, and to know the
extent of it. All too often, locked-in syndrome remains undiagnosed, patients
written off as lost causes when they are all
the while aware of their condition, just
unable to say so.
There have been a few miraculous
recoveries, the occasional story making
the news because of someone who defied
the odds and broke out from being locked
in. One of the most recent is Graham
Miles, 66, from Surrey, south-east
England, who had a stroke and was paralysed, also able to communicate only by
blinking. Miles can now walk, talk and has
even taken up motor racing as a hobby. He
puts his recovery down to willpower.
Others are less fortunate. It was in
February that I first saw Tony Nicklinson
on television, promoting his legal campaign. Tony had been a strong rugby player who travelled the world as an engineer.
When I saw him on television, something
about the way he sat in his wheelchair
reminded me of my dad.
It wasn’t just Tony who caught my
attention. His daughters, Lauren and
Beth, were on screen too. Both in their
early twenties, they talked about how the
man they knew when they were growing
up was no longer there, because the stroke
had taken him away. Here were two young
women with whom I had something in
common: daughters who knew what it felt
like to see your father like that. That connection, or the hope of one, compelled me
to get in touch.
Weeks later, I arrive at the Nicklinson’s
family home in Wiltshire, south-west
England, to spend the afternoon with
Lauren, 23, and Beth, 22. I am painfully
conscious that while the three of us have
seen our dads suffer, my experience has
gone further: my dad is no longer alive, as
Tony is, just down the corridor.
“Everything changed the day dad had
his stroke,” says Lauren, who was 18 and
doing her A-level exams when it happened
(Beth, 16, was taking her GCSE exams).
The Nicklinsons lived in the United Arab
Emirates, at the time, and Tony had just
left on a business trip to Athens when a
colleague phoned to break the news. “I
remember mum shut the door while she
was on the phone, and she’d never do that
unless there was something wrong. Then
she told me that dad had a stroke. I
remember feeling really scared. That night
I slept with the door open.”
I tell Lauren I know how she felt. I
would sleep with the lights on. We are
quietly surprised by small similarities:
that we were all doing our exams when
our dads got ill, that our dads had similar heart problems pre-stroke, that we
discovered the blinks meant something
by accident, that Lauren flew to Athens
with just one change of clothes, just as I
did when I flew back to Birmingham
from Paris.
For Lauren, Beth and me they are small
things which we have never shared with
anyone outside our families. There are
emotional similarities too; the desperate
desire to reach out and save our dads from
the indignity stroke brings, the guilt of
moving on with our lives, the constant
worrying about our mothers. We talk
calmly, without tears but sad recognition
for what it is we have lost.

Kerr credits ‘love’ for her good looks
SUPERMODEL Miranda Kerr thinks having ‘love’ in
her life encourages her to take better care of herself
and her appearance. The 28-year-old, who has
seven-month-old daughter Flynn with actor husband
Orlando Bloom, thinks having respect for herself and
caring for other people encourages her to look after
herself and live a healthy lifestyle. “If you have love,
first of all love and appreciation for yourself, then you
are going to eat healthily and you are going to take
care of yourself and exercise,” contactmusic.com
quoted Kerr as saying.
ACTRESS Jennifer Lopez has signed up to star opposite to Jason
Statham in Parker. JLo, who took a three-year break from films before
making Alan Poul’s The Back-Up Plan last year, will join actor Jason
Statham along with Nick Nolte for forthcoming noir thriller. The 42-year
old will play a real estate agent, while Nolte will be a mentor to
Statham’s title character in the movie, which is an adaptation of
Donald Westlake’s 2000 book Flashfire. Describing JLo’s role, director
Taylor Hackford told the Hollywood Reporter “She plays a real estate
agent who finds that a little larceny may in fact be in the cards for her.”

Lion King Part 2 roars at box office
I would love to run around trees in

MUMBAIKARS are pleasantly surprised to catch a glimpse of

The Lion King Part 2 in 3D. The film has collected above 11
crores in the first week, almost matching the collections of
Singham and a shade less than Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.
Prior to the release of the film, Global Advertisers were roped
in for the publicity of the film in India. The Lion King Part 2,
released on 29th July, is the first 3D release of a hand-drawn
film from Disney, giving the classic kids’ movie a fresh look to
a new generation of viewers.
MAHIE Gill, since her foray into Bollywood, has been
part of more realistic cinema like “Dev D”, “Gulaal” and
now “Not A Love Story”. But the actress is itching to do
full-on commercial films. “I would love to do typical
candy floss commercial films. I love Sridevi and I love
films where the heroine runs in chiffon saris. I would love
to do all that but no director offers me those roles. I don’t
know why,” said a disappointed Mahie. The actress featured in Punjabi films before entering Bollywood.

her

towards the end of 2012.
“Kareena is not getting married anytime soon,” Karisma
said.
Rumour mills have been

the couple - ‘Saifeena’ - is
ready to settle down, and that
their nuptials would happen at
a palace in Bhopal in royal
style.
A report also said that
Kareena’s wedding trousseau
would be designed by Ritu

But Karisma’s denial proves
otherwise.

November, the film has Sameera getting into a commercial space
two years after De Dana Dan. For someone who is being
quite choosy in picking up her assignments, Sameera
says that she found herself to be indeed important to
the scheme of things when it came to Tezz that made
her sign on the dotted line.
“That’s true,” Sameera nods in agreement here,
“In the film I am basically one of the boys along
with Ajay (Devgn). And then there is an emotional twist to the tale as well which makes it all the
more loveable. There is a reason revealed about
why this girl is behaving in the way she has been right
through the film. In an out and out fast paced thriller
like Tezz, it’s good to be bagging such a part which really
takes the story forward.”
Of course along with the film and the character came the
look as well which is making Sameera pretty confident
about the fact that she would be noticed for sure.
“I always wanted to do a full on action movie and Tezz
gave me that opportunity to merge performance with the
look as well, “she gleams, “Here I have gone quite sleek with
that ‘bike-n-babe’ combination. The look I am carrying has
a very Angelina Jolie kind of feel to it.”
