July-August 2015
From the Principal’s Office
Dear Parents & Guardians,
Greetings!
The SMSS community has been blessed with a year of peace,
prosperity and well-being, thanks to its ever supportive parents
and the team of dedicated staffs and teachers. This Hari Raya
Aidil Fitri, let’s take the opportunity to continue in improving
our relationships in the best interests of our children’s
education. A heartfelt thank you extended to my staffs and
academic team for their generous contribution to our orphans.
Indeed, the institution of Ramadan not only one subjects one to
spiritual education, purification of the mind, physical tests and
curbing one's desires through fasting, but educating oneself to
be always aware of the plight of the disadvantaged.

3rd PTM and Recognition Day
Let’s teach our children to
think S.M.A.R.T all the time.
Safety Means Always Recognising Trouble
It is important for kids to always put safety first when they are
out and about.
Let us teach them to take care of themselves and their friends
and to be alert to the things happening around them.
Let’s cultivate in them the confidence to know when something
is not right and be strong enough to seek help when needed.

PARKING
We request our parents’ full co-operation not to park along the road leading to the mosque not to block our Muslim
friends who wish to perform their daily prayer obligations. Please be respectful of the ‘azan’ (prayer calls) and assist
in maintaining the mosque compound clean at all times. We really appreciate the generosity of the management of
Jubli Perak Mosque for allowing us to use their compound as our parking areas, in reciprocation let us respect the
place and work together in keeping it clean at all times. Your understanding on this matter will be highly
acknowledged. Please take note that NO STUDENTS ARE ALLOWED to wait at the mosque during dismissal. This is to
ensure the safety of our students.
We gently request our parents to REFRAIN PARKING along the entrance and exit path in all the sections to ensure a
better flow of traffic especially during dismissal time.
STUDENT ATTENDANCE
Please be reminded that a student’s punctuality is a factor in the student’s performance; it is also important to be in
school on time so as not to miss on important matters. Kindly take note of the following:
 A student will not be promoted to the next level if his/her attendance is less than 85% of the total school
days in the academic year.
 The 85% attendance includes attendance in extra classes and holiday classes for Year 6.
 The school hours are required to be adhered strictly.
 Three consecutive (3) ‘lates’ will be considered as equivalent to 1 day absence from school.

K1: Students in K1 dearly enjoyed their learning on the unit,
Sand and Water. It started with a collaborative effort with
parents, bringing their children on a beach adventure and
collect sand and sea water to be brought to school for
integrated literacy and numeracy activities.
Children came excitedly to school on their beach attire and
along their journey; they were able to feel the texture of sand
and sea water, using these as tool for counting and sounding
activity, and finally the introduction of different sea creatures
through the art of making headdresses.
K2: Our K2 students made their way to their very exciting entry
point on the unit theme, Shopping. Each of them brought along
his/her dollar notes and grocery list given by their mummies.
They experienced real life shopping, and were also introduced
to different sections of the store. Paying their purchases at the
cashier even made their shopping more exciting. Teachers
allowed them to count their dollar notes as they paid their
groceries.
Nutritional values and information were also discussed by their
teachers along the way. Children investigated on price tags and
items in each section of the store. The children in turn
experienced the hands on buying and selling of various
shopping items in the class, on their most exciting Shopping
Fair, during their Exit Point.

Continued from IPC Learning
Experience
K3: ‘This Is Who I Want To Be’ –
A recent entry point activity for
K3 children who came in
character or personality of their
choices. They were encouraged
to show confidence and ease in
introducing themselves and the
character or personality they
wanted to be…
They were also engaged in stage
time, listening and reading
stories, watching videos of fairy
tales that helped develop
listening and comprehension
skills, the love for story books,
and task to provide titles and
ending to simple stories that
they have read. The making of
sock or paper bag puppets led
them to make decisions on
materials to be used and
organised their own puppet
shows.
Teachers tasked them to create
their own stories and take an
active part in dramatic play. In
the end, where they have
completed the 5 week journey,
for their Exit Point, they were
able to showcase their fairy tale
costumes and their confidence
level was highly noticeable when
they had their part in their most
awaited dramatic play. Not only
their confidence gained a boost,
but also their skills in acting and
creativity. As part of their
exciting CHANGES unit theme,
the students proved to be really
adventurous and inquisitive
when they have shown their
skills on making a diagram of an
animal lifecycle, and mixing of
paints to come up with prime
colours.
What’s Coming Up?
RECOGNISING STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENTS IN THEIR PERSONAL
GOALS
In connection with the school’s aim to celebrate each child’s fulfilment
of his/her personal goals infused through the IPC learning targets, we
shall once again boast and allow our children to celebrate their
accomplishments through an awarding ceremony. As every student is
given the fair chance to experience rewards, we precisely observe and
deliberate them on their internalization and practice of personal goals
through daily application of learning, interaction and communication
with teachers and fellow students.

PRESCHOOL UPDATES
EDIBLE PLAY DOUGH SUPPLY
We seek for volunteer parents to help us in the preparation of
play dough for our little ones on their preliminary fine motor skill
development exercise that is done daily. We shall be requiring
(4) rolls of play dough every 3 days. If interested to help, kindly
inquire on the schedule, ask for ingredients and copy of the
recipe and sign up through your child’s class teacher.
HEALTH & SAFETY REMINDERS






To ensure safety of all our children, we seek for your cooperation in closing the main
doors upon entry and exit to and from the main building.
We also advise parents not to use our Emergency Doors for common exits as this will
add to the risk of our children’s safety.
To allow our teachers to settle our students in the dismissal area in an orderly manner
and ensure the safety of our children, we request parents to wait at the Multi-Purpose
Hall for their child/children at DISMISSAL time. Teachers will bring the children there.
Do keep away from the hallways to avoid distractions to our children and allow space
for smooth flow of traffic dismissal.
KG1 parents are encouraged to take their children from their classrooms as the door
opens.
The access doors and gates to the classrooms are opened at 7:30 am. Parents may
wait and/or drop off their children at the Multi-Purpose Hall from 7:00 am until ALL
the access points are finally opened and teachers are finally around the area.
As part of our HSE policy, kindly request for Birthday Celebration approval forms
available from the class teacher or Front Office.
Our children’s safety is our TOP MOST PRIORITY.
Thank you very much for your kind support and prompt cooperation
While we try to teach our children about life;
our children teach us what life is all about.
