Instructor Retires After 38 Years at Western
Larry Hunzinger, Math and Applied Technology Instructor retired from Western Oklahoma State College after 38 years in higher education January 29, 2013 at a “come
and go” reception in the Higher Learning Center foyer at
the college. Huntzinger began teaching drafting on a grant
program in 1975 when the institution was still called Altus
Junior College. Huntzinger cites the move from the AJC
campus to the present campus as the biggest change he saw
during his years at Western. “That was a big deal to go
from those cramped quarters to all this room.”
Western’s drafting program was accredited by The
American Design Drafting Association during his years of
instruction. He is particularly proud of his former student’s
professional accomplishments. “One of my students got a
job on Altus Air Force Base as a civil engineer. It was a
flower in my hat. The supervisor who hired my student said
he took the new hire and expected many questions from
him. That kid went back to his drafting table and brought
him the plans drawn up just as he wanted. That’s how my
student were taught. The students didn’t like it when they
first started the class because everything was turned over
to them. But once they got used to it, they loved it. They

could create the way they wanted to. It was a good program
because it taught them to think and work. One semester
some of the students got a club together and they would
work til 2 or 3 in the morning just drafting. One of those
students is now a team design leader with Ditch Witch.
Another is designing log cabins in North Carolina. Another student, Justin Briggs, was one of the architects for
the Higher Learning Center here at Western. Those are the
types of students that we had that were successful.” When
asked what he hoped he had given his students he said,
“The ability to think and the “want to” to work. If you can
think and work you’ve got employment. If you have those
two, you’ve got it made.”
Huntzinger’s honors include a 1998 induction into the
Oklahoma Technology Student Association Hall of Fame,
being named to Who’s Who in American Education, 19921993 and Certified Senior Industrial Technologist by the
National Association of Industrial Technology. He was
also one of the first instructors to teach interactive television courses for Western in the fundamentals of residential
construction.
Larry and his Wife Lori live in Rocky, Oklahoma. They
have four children: Ryan, Nicole, Colten and Bryce. He has
been and an avid gardener and carpenter, specializing in
furniture construction.

exciting with lead changes after every possession. When
the final whistle blew, it was the Blue Devils in the lead,
claiming the 3rd place trophy.
The main events on Saturday were the championship
games that wrapped up the long week. The games did not
disappoint the fans that had gathered to watch their respective teams. The girl’s game featured two impressive teams
in the Lady Blue Devils of Cordell and the Lady Eagles of
Sayre. The Blue Devils lead the entire game, but the Lady
Eagles stayed within striking distance. In the end, the Lady
Blue Devils would prevail and claim yet another Tri-County Tournament championship. The boy’s championship
highlighted two teams that were no strangers to playing
the latest game on Saturday. The Snyder Cyclones jumped
to an early lead over the Hobart Bearcats and never looked
back. The Cyclones are familiar with winning this particular tournament.
It was a great week of high school basketball that ended
in two very entertaining games. This tournament never
disappoints. Congratulations to the Cordell Lady Blue
Devils and the Snyder Cyclones.
