This week we continue with the sixth chapter of The Joy of Love. Any walk through a book store and you'll see rows and rows of self‐help books. Podcasts and resources abound which aim to coach us through countless aspects of life. However, for some reason there is a tendency to think that marriage and family are skills which don't need honing. This sixth chapter draws out for us the importance of being formed to recognize and live the Joy of Love. Firstly, priests must look at the ways their own families have shaped their view of marriage. They are called to recognize the good that they have received from their families and healing for the pains. Along with the work of the priest, a parish family is invited to be a place where a healthy married life is learned. As a couple approaches their marriage, their concerns and energy can be consumed by many things. Amidst the tremendous efforts it takes to send the announcements and invites, to coordinate calendars and dresses, to prepare parties and honeymoons the importance of preparing for an entirely new phase can be overlooked. "Another great challenge of marriage preparation is to help couples realize that marriage is not something that happens once for all… By saying “I do”, they embark on a journey that requires them to overcome all obstacles standing in the way of their reaching the goal." Perhaps most formative to a couple who is newly married is the witness of couples who have grown in their marriage over time. Rather than seeing marriage as an event which happens on a Saturday afternoon and then left as a decision in the past, we are invited to see the Sacrament of Marriage of being in a constant state of process. Through the many changes which happen in life, i.e. children, jobs, sickness, mistakes, they are invited to realize, that every crisis can be a new “yes”, enabling love to be renewed, deepened and inwardly strengthened. Towards the conclusion of this chapter, Pope Francis also acknowledges the times in which for the sake of the dignity and/or safety of parties involved, separation becomes a tragic option and last resort. " In some cases, respect for one’s own dignity and the good of the children requires not giving in to excessive demands or preventing a grave injustice, violence or chronic ill‐treatment. In such cases, “separation becomes inevitable. At times it even becomes morally necessary, precisely when it is a matter of removing the more vulnerable spouse or young children from serious injury due to abuse and violence, from humiliation and exploitation, and from disregard and indifference.” May we accept with humility the reality of our imperfection and the need to be formed in marriage. Until next time, Fr. Chuck Dornquast Parochial Vicar Page 3 Nineteenth Sunday In Ordinary Time August 7, 2016 Page 4 Special Intentions for the Masses and Deceased August 1‐7, 2016 MON 6:30 A.M.
