First Community CU‘s (Houston)
annual food drive who partnered
with Channel 13‘s Annual ―Share
Your Holidays‖ event.
Although this was the 19th
Annual Food Drive for First Community CU, it was the first time
they partnered with Channel 13,
who was enjoying their 24th Annual Food Drive.
Donations were collected
throughout the Houston and surrounding communities to benefit
the Houston Food Bank. Despite
the uncertain economic times,
First Community CU held a record breaking food drive - collecting over 120,000 pounds of food
between cash and nonperishable donations – doubling
the amount collected in past
years.

―It was a fun time for all. We added in a little friendly competition with
the staff which encouraged team work and created proactive efforts in
collecting donations,‖ said Cheryl McCullough, executive vice president
with First Community CU.
First Community‘s motto was ―Be a hero to someone this holiday
season,‖ which was accomplished by their donation of $20,000 plus
food to the Houston Food Bank.
Security Service FCU Names Gomez
Service Center Manager
Security Service FCU (San Antonio) is pleased to announce Crystal Gomez has been named manager of its Aransas Pass Service Center located at
402 South Commercial Street. Gomez previously worked for Horizon CU
(Portland) before it merged with Security Service FCU earlier this year. Following the merger, Gomez was promoted to operations officer and then to
assistant manager. In her new position as manager, Gomez will be responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the service center.

Responses to Mirabal's credit card direct
main campaigns consistently exceed industry
standards that average
less than a 1 percent response rate. One such
direct mail campaign in
July 2007 exceeded the
American Airlines FCU‘s
expectations by 239 percent and achieved a 2.5
percent response rate.

Seven Texas Leaders Named Certified CU Executives
Certified Credit Union Executive (CCUE) designations were
awarded to 34 individuals, including seven from Texas, bringing
the total nationwide to 2,615.
CCUE, instituted in 1975, is
the hallmark of professional
credit union achievement. Designed for managers and those
aspiring to credit union leadership, the program teaches advanced credit union management
and operations techniques.

12 individuals to earn the CFSP
designation.
The Certified Executive Pro-
gram (CEP) awarded specialty
certifications to 17 credit union
professionals. Sharon D. Palmor, CUCE, of GECU (El Paso)
was among the 17, and received
certification as a compliance specialist. These certifications require in-depth courses in a specialty area, including: compliance, lending, financial management, marketing, and human
resources.
The CEP is the overall name
for the self-study program allowing for the above designations. Recommended for college
credit by the American Council
on Education (ACE), the classes
and materials are tailored specifically to those working within the
credit union system. All new designations were awarded in November.
2008 ELLLy Award Winners Announced
Exceptional credit union trainers and training programs were honored
during an awards presentation at the recent 2008 Experience Learning
Live (ELL) conference. The ELLys are the only national awards presented
to credit union trainers who do outstanding things in the area of professional staff development.
Several Texas credit unions received a WOW! Award, which recognizes a credit union with the best overall training curriculum or event that

SSFCU-Sponsored Food Drive Raises More than One
Million Pounds of Food for San Antonio Food Bank
The month-long food drive, sponsored by
SSFCU along with media partners Y-100 FM,
News 4 TV and the San Antonio Express-News,
raised 1.1 million pounds of food-- more than
enough food to make nearly a million meals for
thousands this holiday season and on into the
new year!

Once donations were collected and finalized,
a 24-hour sort-a-thon was organized at the San
Antonio Food Bank, with joint efforts between
SSFCU and a local youth group from Calvary
Hills Baptist Church.
In all, the Food Bank collected enough to
make 859,375 meals or feed 44,000 people three
meals a day for six months.
SACU Presents Gift Cards to Fort Sam Houston Troops
San Antonio FCU (SACU) helped
make the holidays more festive for soldiers‘ families during the holiday season
by presenting $25 HEB Grocery gift
cards to 40 soldiers at Fort Sam Houston.

Soltex FCU (La Porte) is welcoming the new year with a new name and address: Independence Parkway
FCU (La Porte) at 1030 Independence Parkway South. The change was made on Jan. 1 and is keeping with
the localized theme of Texas celebrating the winning of its independence. As changes come to the community

Sabine FCU President, Lyndell H. Bray, Retires After 35
Years of Service
On Jan. 2, Lyndell H.
Bray retired from Sabine
FCU (Orange). His credit
union career spanned
over many, many
years. In April of 1973,
Bray was hired as the
assistant manager of the
credit union. Bray, a
graduate of Mauriceville
High School, came to the
credit union with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from
Beaumont‘s Lamar University. Before working at
the credit union, Bray was
a cost accountant for Levingston Shipbuilding.
In 1977, Bray became
president of Sabine
FCU. That same year, he
graduated from South-
west CUNA Management
School. There have been
many changes in the
credit union during Bray‘s
tenure. Sabine FCU has
grown from around $14
million in assets (1977) to
over $160 million in assets (2008) with many
new services added over
the years.
Bray stated that ―It has
been an honor to have
spent my working career
with our credit union. I
will always remember the
fine people that I had the
opportunity to work with
and being a part of our
credit union history. I
want to wish all our members, staff and credit union volunteers continued
success and best
wishes in the future.‖

Shell FCU Presents Five Checks for Local Charities
Shell FCU presented
five donation checks on
Dec. 19 totaling
$6,736.00 to several local
nonprofit organizations.
The credit union committed to donating $5 for
every new checking account opened after Hurricane Ike from Sept. 24
until Nov. 30 to the
Greater Houston American Red Cross. ―We felt it
was our civic duty to
make a donation to help
those in this area devastated by Hurricane Ike,‖
said Angela Head, vice
president of marketing/IT.
A check was presented to
the Greater Houston
American Red Cross for
$3,845.00.
Four other checks
were presented in part
with the credit union‘s
Holiday Raffle Fundraiser.

Bernanke’s Financial Address Inspires Sold-Out Crowd

Mike Riepen. Speaking to a sold-out crowd of 1,700,
Bernanke‟s speech primarily focused on three important
aspects of policy: interest rate policy, liquidity policy and
policies to stabilize the financial system. He mentioned that
although the Texas economy was a strong and diversified
one, the national outlook was being scrutinized by strong
economic and financial challenges. During his
presentation, Bernanke remarked that further interest-rate cuts are possible, but even that would
have a limited impact on reviving the economy.
American Airlines FCU Announces Record Bonus
Dividend to its Member-Owners
American Airlines FCU is
proud to announce that a record
bonus dividend was paid to
member-owners on Dec. 31.
The board of directors approved
the dividend payout at a board
meeting held on Dec. 1.
The active participation of
both borrowers and savers contributed to a successful 2008.
The bonus dividend is based
upon dividends earned on qualifying share accounts and/or interest paid on applicable loans in
2008. The savings portion of the
dividend was calculated on 2008
share dividends earned; and was
paid at an annual rate of 3 percent. If loan interest was paid in
2008, the additional portion of the
bonus dividend amount was calculated at an annual rate of 3
percent on those applicable
loans.
―While other financial institutions are tightening their belts,
American Airlines FCU is able to
offer this bonus because we
made sound lending decisions,
operated efficiently and remain
financially secure, strong and
solid,‖ said Angie Owens, American Airlines FCU president/CEO.
―As a result, we can give back
this unprecedented bonus dividend to our members based on
their active participation in the
credit union.‖
This year, to recognize the
most active and loyal members,
an additional $80 bonus was
distributed to members who
maintained three or more account categories. The product
categories include:
Savings (Regular or IRA),
Checking Account, Certificate
(Regular or IRA), Auto Loan,
Credit Card, Other Loan, Mortgage/Home Equity Loan and
Financial Services.

Smith Set to Serve on U.S. Federal Reserve Board
The U.S. Federal Reserve
Board has tapped Randy Smith,
CEO of Randolph-Brooks FCU
(Universal City) to serve on its
Thrift Institutions Advisory Council (TIAC). Smith, whose term
continues through 2010, is one of
two credit union representatives
on the 12-member panel. He
was one of six new members
announced by the Fed Dec. 31.
This group meets three times a
year and advises the Fed on
issues relating to thrift institutions, the housing industry, mortgage finance and regulatory concerns.
Smith has served as president
and CEO of the $3 billion in assets credit union since 1987.
The credit union serves over
275,000 members concentrated in
the San Antonio-Austin corridor.
For many years, Randolph-Brooks
FCU has been awarded top ratings by financial rating organizations. In 1996, the National Association of Federal Credit Unions
(NAFCU) selected RandolphBrooks FCU as the ―Credit Union
of the Year.‖ The credit union has
also been recognized by the National Credit Union Administration
(NCUA) for service to smaller
credit unions and by the United
States Air Force for service to
military members.
Smith is a Certified Public Ac-
countant with a master‘s degree in
business administration. He has
served on various committees of
state and national credit union
organizations including NAFCU,
the Credit Union National Association (CUNA), Credit Union Executive Society (CUES) and the Defense Credit Union Council. He
was selected by NAFCU to be one
of two credit union CEOs to serve
on the Credit Union Oversight
Task Force of the Campaign for
Consumer Choice, which guided
the writing and passage of HR
1151 to restore the field of membership options for federal credit
unions after these had been limited by a Supreme Court ruling in
favor of a banking industry lawsuit.
He also served NAFCU as a
member of the Regulatory Committee and Accounting Standards
Committee. He served as the
Treasurer of the PULSE EFT Association from 1993 to 2004. And
in 2008, he was elected to the
CUNA Mutual Board of Directors
and NAFCU Board of Directors.
In the community, Smith is involved in the Children‘s Miracle
Network Credit Unions for Kids
program and the Randolph Metrocom Rotary Club‘s Partners In
Education Foundation, which
helps children in local school districts. He is an active supporter of
the Brooks City Base‘s Challenger
Learning Center, which helps in-

pursue careers in math and science. He has served as Treasurer
of the Board of Directors of Centro

member of the Citizen‘s Bond
Oversight Committee for the
Alamo Community College District
(ACCD). In 2008, he was selected
to serve on the ACCD Foundation
Board of Directors. He was appointed to the Board of Trustees,
United Way of San Antonio and
Bexar County in 2007.
Smart Financial CU Completes Key FCU Merger
Smart Financial CU (Houston)
and Key FCU (Houston) have put
the finishing touches on their
merger that took effect on June
30, 2008. Since the merger announcement, made in 2008, the
two institutions have worked diligently to integrate account offerings, processes and data.
Smart Financial CU now
serves more than 80,000 members and has over $392 million in
assets. The merger also in-
creases the number of Smart
Financial CU locations to 17,
most of which are located within
the Greater Houston area.
―I feel we are nearing the final
phase of our merger journey,
which I call ‗our period of adjustment‘…not only for the staff of
both organizations but there is
also an adjustment period for our
members,‖ says Jenny Smith,
former president and CEO of Key
FCU and now senior vice presi-
dent of medical operations for
Smart Financial CU.
―Regardless of asset size,
both institutions face significant
challenges in getting the multiple
stages of a successful conversion completed,‖ adds Smart
Financial CU president and CEO,
Gary Tuma. ―At the end of the
day, I think we are both going to
benefit greatly from the merger.‖
Credit Unions in their Communities
River City FCU Prepares for Changing of the Guard
After almost 23 years of service, Watt Prichard has decided
to step down as president and
CEO of River City FCU (San
Antonio). Prichard, 67, says it‘s
time for him to hand over the
reins.
―It‘s just part of the process.
I‘ve had a longer-than-most relationship with this credit union and
it‘s been good,‖ Prichard says.
Prichard will continue leading
the credit union until March 31.
Kim Heinze will take over the
post on April 1.
Heinze, a 30-year industry
veteran, comes to San Antonio
from Beaumont, where she
served as interim president and
CEO of Mobiloil FCU
(Beaumont).
Prichard says he‘s pleased
with Heinze‘s level of experience
and believes she will be a capable leader in moving the credit
union into the future.
In a prepared statement,
Heinze said she appreciates the
opportunity that has been presented to her.
―I am honored and humbled to
take the reins of River City FCU.
Watt has provided invaluable
leadership over the past 23
years, and I look forward to working with him during the transition,‖ Heinze said.
During his tenure with the
credit union, Prichard says River
City FCU has undergone some
major changes and growth.
