Did you know most of the world’s French fries come from New Brunswick? New Brunswick based McCain Foods makes one third of all the frozen French fries produced in the world, and many come from a $65 million state-ofthe-art potato processing plant that’s in Florenceville-Bristol. The small town in western New Brunswick has taken on the moniker “The French Fry capital of the World.” Not surprisingly, this is the location of the Potato World Museum, and the heart of the midJuly National French Fry Day celebrations. 2. Did you know Carlton Place makes the world’s best baseball bats? In 2012, more than 100 Major League baseball players chose to swing Canadian maple wood bats– better known as the “Sam Bat.” Sam Holman, founder of The Original Maple Bat Corporation, invented the bat by choosing maple wood, a harder wood than the traditionally used ash. cont on page 5 EH= pronounced AY (similar, but not the same as huh) Eh is a useful word that is very important and is the basis of all Canadian communications. It is used in conjunction with other words, or simply by itself. The tone or the slight differences in exclamation also changes the meaning: Eh? = what did you say? Eh? = what do you think? EH? = something to say just to end a sentence. cont on page 8 ….eh Wynndel Community Centre June 29, 30, July 1 www.ocanadaartfestival.com Saturday June 29 3pm-9pm 3pm-8pm—From Far and Wide Art Show Featuring artists from across Canada 3pm-8pm—”Without Borders” Art Show (Idaho & BC) 5pm-9pm—Adult Refreshment Garden Music by Daniel Huscroft 6pm-10pm—Shuttle Bus to and from Wynndel Sunday June 30 11am-3pm 11am-3pm—Artisan Market, Music 11am-3pm—Retro Café Lunch 11am-3pm—Carnival Games 11am-3pm—Petting Zoo 11am-12pm—Lion Dance with Red Jade 11am-3pm—”From Far and Wide” Art Show Featuring artists from across Canada 11am-3pm—”Without Borders” Art Show (artists from Idaho & BC) Artist Demos Monday July 1 11am-3pm CANADA DAY CELEBRATION 11am-3pm—Strawberry Biscuits & Tea Roll out the Red Carpet for our special guest 11am-3pm—”From Far and Wide” Art Show 11am-3pm—”Without Borders” Art Show 1pm—Raising of the Flag 1pm—Dunk Tank Charity Fundraiser Questions? I waded along the edge of the lake. I pushed my way through 3 kilometers of brambles. I got sand in my shoes and my eyes. I barely avoided stepping on a snake. I climbed several rocky hills. I ran away from an irate mother bear and then ran away from one angry bull elk. The mental stress of it all left me shattered.” Amazed by the story, the doctor said, “You must be quite the outdoor woman!” “No,” the woman replied, “I’m just a really, really bad golfer.” —————————————————Friendship is like a book. Since early Roman times some grain, usually wheat, has been associated with the wedding ceremony. Wheat, a symbol of fertility, was carried in the bride’s hand or worn by her in the form of a garland. As the bride left the church, grains of wheat were tossed at her, and young girls rushed to pick up the grains that had actually touched the bride. These were assumed to have the power to ensure the young girl a wedding of her own in the near future. During the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, wheat was no longer tossed at brides but was instead baked into small cakes that were then crumbled and tossed over the bride’s head. Later, the small cakes were replaced with a large one, which was cooked and eaten. This change in ceremony left the wedding guests feeling deprived, since they had nothing to toss at the bride. Since, at that time rice was cheap, clean, and white, it seemed a good substitute for the more expensive wheat cakes. ————————————————— On the first day of school, a first grader handed his teacher a note from his mother.
