The BC Problem
Many years ago, a newly married couple rented a house in the country. After
moving in, the young wife noticed that
the bathroom did not have a commode
(toilet), so she decided to write the
landlord about it, but being extremely
timid, modest and bashful, she hesitated about spelling the word
“Bathroom Commode”, so in her letter
she just used the initials and asked,
“What about the B.C?” feeling sure the
landlord would know what the initials
meant.

BC Problem ….cont from pg 1
When the landlord got the letter he was
greatly puzzled as to what the initials
might indicate and finally wrote her a
letter feeling sure that she meant the
“Baptist Church.” He wrote as following
Dear Madam:
I regret the delay in answering your
letter, and in reply will say that there is
a very nice B.C. 4 miles down the road,
due east of the house you are renting
from me that will seat 250 people. This
4 mile distance is somewhat unfortunate, that is if you are in the habit of
going regularly, but no doubt you will
be interested to know that many people take their lunch and make a day of
it. They usually arrive pretty early and
stay late and enjoy fun and fellowship.
The last time my wife and I went was 2
years ago and we were a little late so
we had to stand up. This did not bother
me as I am in the habit of standing
quite a lot of the time, but rather uncomfortable for my wife as she has
arthritis in both knees. It may interest
you to know that a box supper is
planned in the near future to raise
funds to plush seat the B.C. This is a
long felt need, as some of the seats
are rough and cracked and a person
likes to sit in comfort while he meditates. A very friendly usher always
greets you upon arrival at the B.C. and
takes you to a seat. Many years ago
when my wife and I were living in the
little house you are now renting the
men and women did not sit together,
but in these modern times family
groups and personal friends just come
in and sit together. Many people resolve to attend the B.C. more often, but
when the time comes they just lie in
bed and read the paper until they realize it is too late to go.

BC Problem….cont from pg 3
Some people attend the B.C. only on
Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, and
Mother’s Day, but it is a known fact
that people who go to the B.C. only on
special occasions during the year don’t
do very much when they do go and
this is a very unhealthy situation. I
would like to say that it pains me very
much not to be able to go more often,
but it surely is not a lack of desire on
my part. As we grow more older, it
seems more of an effort to go, particularly in cold weather.
In conclusion, will add, that I hope to
meet you there soon.
-Your Landlord
—————————————————Let’s Face It:
English is a Crazy Language
There is no egg in eggplant nor ham in
hamburger; neither apple nor pine in
pineapple. English muffins weren’t invented in England. Quicksand can
work slowly, boxing rings are square,
and a guinea pig is neither from
Guinea nor is it a pig. And why is it that
writers write but fingers don’t fing, grocers don’t groce and hammers don’t
ham? Doesn’t it seem crazy that you
can make amends but not one
amend? If teachers taught why didn’t
preachers praught? If a vegetarian
eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? In what other language do
people recite at a play and play at a
recital? We ship by truck but send
cargo by ship. We have noses that run
and feet that smell. We park in a driveway and drive in a parkway. And how
can a slim chance and a fat chance be
the same, while a wise man and a
wise guy are opposites? You have to
marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn
up as it burns down, in which you fill in
a form by filling it out, and in which an
alarm goes off by going on. And, in
closing, if father is pop, how come
mother is not mop?

Rebus Puzzle
A rebus is a picture representation
of a name, word or phrase.
The puzzle below portrays a common
word or phrase.
Can you guess what it is?
Des Moines, Iowa, convenience store
clerk Harpal Singh called the police to
tell them he had just been robbed.
“He’s about 5 foot 10,” Singh told the
emergency operator over the phone,
just as the robber stepped back into
the store. “I’m 6 foot 2.” the robber
said. “About 6foot 2,” Singh told the
operator, “and about 38 years old.”
The robber again interrupted, “I’m 34.”
and asked for his wallet back that he
had dropped during the robbery. By
the time the robber ran out the door
again, police had arrived. Steven Hebron, 34, was arrested and charged with
robbery. “IQ around 80,” Singh said.
“Barely 70,” the robber corrected.

A Great Lesson on Stress
A young lady confidently walked
around the room with a raised glass of
water while leading a seminar and explaining stress management to her audience. Everyone knew she was going
to ask the ultimate question, “Half
empty or half full?” She fooled them all.
“How heavy is this glass of water?” she
inquired with a smile. Answers called
out ranged from 8oz to 20oz. She replied, “The absolute weight doesn’t
matter. It depends on how long I hold
it. If I hold it for a minute, that’s not a
problem. If I hold it for an hour, I’ll have
an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a
day, you’ll have to call an ambulance.
In each case it’s the same weight, but
the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.” She continued, “and that’s the
way it is with stress. If we carry our
burdens all the time, sooner or later, as
the burden becomes increasingly
heavy, we won’t be able to carry on.”
“As with the glass of water, you have to
put it down for a while and rest before
holding it again. When we’re refreshed,
we can carry on with the burdenholding stress longer and better each
time practiced. So, as early in the evening as you can, put all your burdens
down. Don’t carry them through the
evening and into the night. Pick them
up again tomorrow if you must.”

Feline Leukemia and Feline Aids are two of the most common
infectious diseases associated with illness and death among cats. Both these
diseases impair the immune system’s ability to fight infection.
Cats may show symptoms such as unexplained weight loss, recurring
infections, skin disorders, swollen glands, anaemia, respiratory and
reproductive problems, mouthsores or gum problems. Once
infected, the suppressed immune system may allow a variety of
secondary diseases to take hold. Many cats may be symptom free for many
years, but still pose a threat to other cats, as they are carriers of the infection.
Both Feline Leukemia and Feline Aids are very common in
Creston’s stray cat population!
Both these diseases can be tested for and vaccinated against!
For the month of May have your cat tested for both these
diseases for a discounted price of $64.04+GST ($20 savings!)

Last year, when the lawn mower was
broken and wouldn’t run, I kept hinting
to my husband that he ought to get it
fixed, but somehow the message never
sunk in. Finally, I thought of a clever
way to make the point.
When my husband arrived home that
day, he found me seated in the tall
grass, busily snipping away with a tiny
pair of sewing scissors. He watched
silently for a short time, and then went
into the house.
He was gone only a few moments, and
when he came out again he handed
me a toothbrush. “When you finish cutting the grass,” he said, “you might as
well sweep the sidewalks.”
He will be just fine when they take the
casts off.
Page 11
74 year old Fred tripped on the stairs
and broke his leg. The doctor put a
cast on it and warned that he wasn’t to
use the stairs until the cast came off.
A month later the doctor removed the
cast and pronounced Fred well on his
way to recovery. “Oh good,” Fred responded. “Is it all right for me to walk
the stairs now?” “Yes,” said the doctor,
“if you will promise to be careful.” “I
can’t tell you what a relief it will be,”
Fred sighed. “It was such a nuisance
crawling outside and shinnying up and
down the drainpipe all the time.”
