SACRAMENTS
BAPTISMS: Celebrated monthly. Arrangements should be
made as soon as possible. Pre-Registration is required for the
Program of Preparation and Baptism. Please call the Rectory to
register.
VISITATION /ANOINTING OF THE SICK: Please inform
the Rectory regarding persons who are hospitalized or confined
to home, and arrangements will be made to bring the
Sacrament to them. Anointing , any hour of the day or night,
call the Rectory.
CONFESSIONS: Saturdays 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. noon, or
anytime by appointment.
MATRIMONY: Couples contemplating marriage should
contact a priest on staff at least one year in advance, prior to
making any other arrangements.
VOCATIONS: Anyone contemplating vocation to the
Priesthood or Religious Life should contact the Vocations

AAA...Archbishop’s Annual Appeal...Our Triple
“AAA”, (AAA) goal is $48,815.00. As of now, we have received $ 29,515.00 in pledges, leaving our Archdiocesan assessed goal short by $ 19,300.00 Of that pledged amount, we
have received $ 26,156.00. Our Church Community consists of
1758 families. Out of this total, only 161 families are participating in the Triple “A”. The Church realizes the hardship people are enduring these days, but, the Church relies on your generosity to meet our obligations. So, please be generous.

ASSUMPTION PARISH YOUTH MINISTRY
CHRISTMAS GREENS SALE
The Youth Ministry of Assumption Parish is once again
conducting a wreath & grave blanket sale.
All proceeds from this sale will support out Youth Ministry
Program. We will be selling an assortment of sizes & styles.
We need you to preorder, if at all possible this year, as we are
responsible for all of our inventory.
Please use the order form that you will find at the doors of
the Church or in the Rectory. You can turn the forms in at the
Rectory or in the Collection Baskets at Mass. The first orders
will be in Thanksgiving Weekend. You will be called when
your order is ready for pick-up.

A note from the Pastor
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
W
e can live our Christian life in either one of two ways:
1. Maintaining a certain “routine”: reducing our involvement
with religious activities and worship to a “minimum
requirement”, so that our personal life may not be too much
disturbed – in the end doing nothing wrong, always being nice
and gentle to the others, yet minding our business and
demanding others do their own.
Or:
2. Allowing ourselves to be challenged, taking some risk in
changing our habits and attitudes in regard to our sacramental
and spiritual life when needed, and responding with humility
to the stimuli we receive from the current events of our life
with the attitude of a “servant of God” rather than a “master of
one’s life”.
In today’s reading from the Gospel of Matthew we hear the
well-known Parable of the Talents. One servant receives only
one talent, with the task to invest it in order to produce some
revenue. But he is afraid to take any risk: he secures the little
he has received without making it fruitful for himself and his
master. Just like the many who live their faith in an apathetic
way – doing nothing objectively wrong perhaps, yet not
responding to any of the promptings of the Holy Spirit.
I remember being one of those people once: the minimum
amount of faith I had received made me believe in the
existence of God, but had no concrete and effective impact to
my life, as I considered myself the only one in charge of it. I
used also to see myself not a very talented man, until I learnt
that the “talents” Jesus speaks about are not merely “human
qualities” or “skills” – either connatural or acquired throughout
our life. Talents represent rather all the “words” that come
forth from the mouth of God: the words we hear when we
proclaim Scripture at Mass; the words that are summarized in
the teachings of the Church (in the Catechism, in the
Magisterium); the words that are pronounced by ordained
ministers especially when they celebrate the sacraments.
We are urged today not to remain indifferent to the talents –
the words – the Lord provides for us through the Church. This
is an ever more urgent task as we face oppositions and
challenges to our faith from the entire “secular” mentality. We
can start by a very simple exercise, namely, asking ourselves
how the Word of God we hear today speaks to us
(individually) in our present life situation: What is God trying
to tell me today? What is He calling me to? How can I
respond? What kind of a challenge should I accept? Maybe,
considering having another child? Perhaps, involving myself in
some parish ministry? Finding new ways to deepen my
spiritual life?
The parable of the talents invites us to become “worthy
servants”: children of God who strive daily to know what their
master wants them to be and do, and who accept the challenge
to break their routine – their mentality, their views, their plans
… – by responding generously and courageously to the Lord’s
call to discipleship and faithful observance of His Word.

Why not take a break and treat yourself to the gift of Cornerstone? Our 7th Women’s Cornerstone retreat will happen
here at Assumption on February 20th and 21st. This retreat is
an opportunity for women to start, or renew a relationship with
Christ. This 26 hour retreat is run by fellow women parishioners that have already made Cornerstone. We invite all women
to give yourself this wonderful gift. Registration forms are in
brochures located in the back of the church and in the Rectory.

ROSARY SOCIETY - IMPORTANT
Our Mass for the November meeting will be said for all the
deceased Rosarians. Please make an effort to be there by 7:30
p.m., Monday, November 17, 2014. Also, we will be taking
and paying for our Christmas Party reservations, since this is
the last meeting before that event. I urge all Rosarians to be at
the meeting.

JUBILEE EVENTS
BLESSINGS OF HOMES AND FAMILIES
On the occasion of the Jubilee Year, the Church of
the Assumption is introducing the Catholic Tradition of the
Blessing of Homes and Families. If you are interested in Father
Paolo, or Father Miles coming to your home to provide a
House Blessing, please call the Rectory office at 201-2621122, to schedule an appointment.
NEED CASH FOR THE HOLIDAYS?
Today, November 16th, Assumption Church has invited,
“American Gold & Diamond Buyers” to come here & conduct
a precious metal buy-back.
You can turn in all your old un-wanted gold, silver, diamonds, jewelry, coins & so on, for money, condition doesn’t
matter. Everyone can use some extra cash during the holidays,
so check around your house for any hidden treasures.
The event will run from 9 a.m. till 2 p.m. in the Assumption
School Cafeteria. Stop by TODAY, November 16th. If you

BENEATH THE STARS
Our next and 4th Jubilee event will take place November
30th at 4:00 p.m. right here in our Church. It will be the second
concert in our Concert Series…Beneath the Stars. Dr. Lisa Lutter, who has won awards world-wide with her award winning
Ramapo Chorale Group, will treat us to a seasonal concert that
will “touch your spirit and lift you to the highest heavens”.
Joining her, under her direction will be her Ramapo Chorale
Group of over 40 singers, accompanied by pianist Itay Goren,
who captivated us a few weeks ago with his solo performance.
Save the date, invite your family and friends and join us for
another extraordinary show.
Brian Beahm-Jubilee Chairman
A couple of years ago, we at Assumption got together as a
parish and planned a fantastic idea that we had never done
before. We were going to work together to plan and put on a
fundraiser that would have been a huge financial gain to our
parish and show that we were able to work as a family. That
fundraiser was the Carnival. A lot of ground work was
completed, we had an abundance of people to help run the
event, and everything was set. Unfortunately, the school closed
and the Archdiocese asked us to postpone the Carnival until a
later date.
Well, the time and the need for the Carnival has come
again! This can be a great Jubilee event to help us celebrate
our parish’s 50th year anniversary. The financial benefit
couldn’t come at a better time too. We have seen some major
expenditures during the past year. Our heating and air
conditioning units have been very costly. Though your very
generous donations have helped soften the blow, they have
fallen short of what was needed. Not only will the Carnival
help bring much needed revenue to our Church, it will bring us
together as a family to help achieve a common goal.
We propose to hold the Carnival around the same time
when we last planned it, the middle of July. While there is no
perfect time to put on any event, this date had seemed to work
well with the surrounding circumstances. May and June are
filled with graduations, communions, confirmations and our
grounds are still being used by the Pre-school. The timing of
other surrounding towns that put on carnivals, all of this has to
be taken into consideration.
All the ground work has been laid from the previous
attempt to put on the Carnival. What the parish needs now is a
renewed commitment from her parishioners, that they can
come together and work as a family and put on a Carnival.
Over the 4 or 5 days we would be putting on the Carnival, we
would need 50-60 people to split the different shifts. There are
many different duties that need to be performed during the
course of the event. Some are sitting, some are standing , and
others are walking around. We will try to accommodate any
restrictions you might have, so you are able to help out. We
need to know now if you are able to help! Unless we know we
will reach the needed volunteers, there would be no sense to
continue the planning of the Carnival! All this has to be done
5-6 months in advance.
This Carnival can only happen if our Assumption
parishioners are committed to see our parish flourish and be
successful. Without her parishioners, our church is nothing but
an empty building. You are the ones that make Assumption
Church what she is today. You alone have the ability to see her
continue to be the guiding light of your faith. A place to shed
your fears and take in God’s love and wisdom, and a place to
pray. It’s all up to you, as parishioners of Our Lady of
Assumption.

ASSUMPTION EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER
Dear Parishioners:
This week, I would like to spotlight a few more of our
paraprofessionals…these women are extremely dedicated to
Assumption and I appreciate their efforts to keep our school
running smoothly each day!
Marguerite Brendel has worked at Assumption since
2008. She has worked in Pre-K2, 3 and 4. Before Assumption,
she was in child care at the Ridgewood YMCA for 7 years. Her
two sons are graduates of Assumption Academy!
Marcelline Herr started working at Assumption 7 years
ago. She has lived here in the community with her husband and
two children for 24 years! Marcelline said that she feels blessed
to be part of a great parish and school family!
Judy Jones has worked with Pre-K and Kindergarten children here at Assumption for over 26 years! She also enjoys
spending time with her 12 grandchildren (always surrounded
by children!) as well as boating, reading mysteries and crocheting.
Five years ago, Jackie Woods started at Assumption. She
lives in Westwood with her husband , two children (who both
attended Assumption Academy) and the family dog. She said
that her time here has been very rewarding and that she enjoys
all of the children. Next week, I will spotlight two more teachers!

Here are various ways that you can be involved in our school:

All Parish families are invited to our annual Breakfast with
Santa on Saturday, December 6th from 10 am-12 noon.
Cost of the breakfast is $ 7.00 per adult and $ 3.00 per
child (from 2-12 years old) All reservations must be into
the school, NO LATER THAN DEC.1st! A picture cost
of $ 5.00 for an 5” x 7” photo will be given directly to the
photographer on Saturday. Come one, come all enjoy
breakfast with Santa...bouncy house...photo with Santa!!
Flyers are available at the school, inside the church or at
the Rectory during business hours. No tickets will be sent
home, there will be a reservation list at the door.

We collect BOX TOPS & Campbell SOUP LABELS…feel
free to bring them over whenever you gather some together. We send them directly to their respective companies throughout the year.
•
We have an ongoing T-shirt sale. It says Assumption
Early Childhood Center on it. It comes in Royal Blue only.
Adult shirts are available for $ 15. per shirt. Children sizes
are $ 12. Call the school at 201-262-0300 for order details.
•
Assumption ECC is still collecting clothing, shoes, purses,
belts, linens and stuffed animals. This collection will continue throughout the summer as well. Please bring the
items in plastic trash bags to the cafeteria or gym in the
school. Thank you for your generosity.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS
Religious Education began on Monday, September 8th. If
you have not registered yet, please contact the office at 201986-0970 from Monday -Thursday, 9 am to 3 pm. If the child
was not baptized at Assumption, please bring a copy of their
Baptismal Certificate. Sister Dominic is in need of a 5th
Grade Teacher. If you are interested, please call Sister at 201986-0970, as soon as possible, she would be happy to work
with you.
For adults who haven't received any of the sacraments
and are seeking instruction, please call Father Paolo
Tanzini at 201-262-1122.
KEEP THOSE CARTRIDGES COMING!!!
We wish to thank ALL of you who have been donating
your used ink-jet printer cartridges. This has proven to be very
helpful in supplementing our income & also in protecting the
environment. Please continue to participate in this program.
We receive $2.00 for each used ink-jet cartridge we submit
providing they are NO LARGER THAN THE PALM OF
YOUR HAND & also if the print-head is not damaged. This
can be accomplished by either placing them back into the
original box from time of purchase, or covering the head with
a small piece of foil. Thank you for your help.
JOY’N THE ADULT CHOIR
The Adult Choir needs YOU. Please consider becoming
a member. Rehearsals are Thursdays 7:30-9:00. We sing at the
10:00 a.m. Mass every Sunday between September & June. All
voice types are welcome, NO experience is necessary. Call

DRIVE in honor ALL SAINTS from this weekend through
November 22nd and 23rd. All food collected will be donated
to Office of Concern Food Pantry in Englewood. They have
graciously requested that along with the traditional
Thanksgiving food items, i.e. cranberry sauce, stuffing and the
like, there is also a great need for year-round foods that are
especially valuable: first, canned fruits and vegetables, second,
pastas, and third, breakfast cereals.
Please drop off all food at the main entrance of the
Church. Gift cards to local supermarkets and turkeys will also
be accepted and can be dropped off at the Rectory.
For more than 34 years volunteers at the OFFICE OF
CONCERN have been assisting needy families in Bergen
County with weekly supplementary food. The Food Pantry is
available on a weekly basis for almost 1,000 families living
below the Federal Poverty Level. These families live in severe
circumstances, with limited food stamps and the need to
choose between paying rent, medical needs and clothing. This
leaves little money left over for food.

OUTSIDE PARISH ACTIVITIES
Our Lady of Good Counsel, 668 Ridgewood Rd.,
Washington Township will be running a RETREAT WITH
POPE FRANCIS. You will have the privilege of an up-close
encounter with his words & example opening the door to a
deeper relationship with God. This retreat is divided into 6
conferences of about 20 minutes each, followed by discussion
together. This week’s topic is listed below. All discussions will
take place at Our Lady of Good Counsel, 7:30 p.m. in the
Rackley Room. The next session will be on November 17th &
will feature: “The Joy of the Gospel”. The presenter, on DVD,
is Fr. Anthony Ciorra, PH.D, who was honored & awarded the
Caritas Centennial Award for his work in lay ministry. All

ENGLISH LESSONS OFFERED
The Emerson Public Library is offering free lessons in
English to adults who wish to master the language. Instruction
is individual, or in small groups, and is scheduled at the
convenience of the tutor and the student. Interested adults may
register at the Library, or by calling Francesca at 201-2614010. If you know anyone who may profit from this
opportunity, please pass the information on to them. This
program (ESL or English as a Second Language) is helping
residents become active members of the community, as well as
advance in their employment.
The Acoustic Café Music Series at Our Lady of Mercy, 25
Fremont Ave., Park Ridge will present a WHY Hunger Benefit
Concert on Saturday, November 22nd. Performers include
headliners Jen Chapin, Joe D’Urso, KJ Denhert, Anthony
D’Amato. Opening set by Arlon Bennett, Honor Finnegan,

raise funds and awareness for the most effective organizations

Felician College Celebration— Please join the Felician
Sisters at Immaculate Conception High School, 258 South
Main Street, Lodi, for their 140th Anniversary Mass. The Mass
will be celebrated by Bishop John Flesey, and will be held on
November 21st at 9:15 a.m. All are welcome to attend to help
celebrate this momentous occasion.
Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, located at 400
Maywood Avenue, Maywood, will be hosting it’s annual
Holiday Market on Sunday, December 7th in the Auditorium
from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Come and browse, our guests will
