President George Hurst Hello Lincoln Land hope you're enjoying the nice weather, hard to believe it's August already. There are a couple of things this month that we would like some membership participation in. The Jerry Coleman Memorial breakfast for the Honor Flight is August 13th at the airport. This is put on by the Springfields pilot Association. They loaned us their cookers a couple of times when we made breakfast at the VFW. We will go for a ride North along the river to Peoria after breakfast. August 27th is the governor's ride, they want us to help again this year. It's not hard work and there is food and drinks. More information at the chapter meeting. We are changing things a little with the meet and greet to make sure we have enough food to eat. If you are planning on bringing food get on Facebook and tell what you're bringing by the Sunday before the meeting. If you don't do the Facebook stuff call me and let me know. Remember our sponsors when you are out and about and tell them you are a Lincoln Land member. Also remember Rude Dogs challenge of everyone to get a new member. OLIVER, MARK ROTH, L.TIMOTHY HUTSON Free to Fly...for Now August 2016 Public Relations Josh “SKI” Witkowski - Public Relations [email protected] First, let’s start with the good news. After contact from some of our members regarding their “no vests” policy, Mowies Cue has apparently changed their minds and vests from different clubs and associations are now allowed to be worn there. I encourage you to swing by there and show them how nice it can be to have bikers at a business. In addition to our local victory, there is a resolution pending in congress that rejects motorcyclist profiling. The resolution is HR 831. Please call your congressman and encourage them to sponsor this important piece of legislation. Unfortunately, it seems sometimes we take a step forward and something happens that threatens to take us back. Recently there was a run of 300+ sportbikes as part of a stunt club in Aurora, IL. Initial video footage showed a confrontation of a truck running over one of the bikes after being surrounded by others. Later videos posted online showed the truth. The bikes were popping wheelies, weaving traffic, running intersections without traffic control, riding across 2 lanes 4 abreast, and my favorite, trying to block a cop that was attempting to get them stopped. The incident caused an uproar in the suburb leading some residents to call it “domestic terrorism” and local media to repeat the slogan “gang of bikers” in every report they do. The incident goes to show the importance of how we conduct ourselves in the public view. The club in Aurora may not have been ABATE, but they are how bikers are seen by the public as long as the videos keep airing. We,as members of ABATE and active members of the motorcycle community, need to be mindful of our actions. We should strive to show others the generosity, heart, and respect that makes our family strong. While we work to show the community what we do, we should also work on reaching out to those in the sort bike community, and those that don’t have as much experience. We can show them how to organize runs, how to ride safe yet fun, and how to preserve their rights as motorcyclists. Next time you’re out on the road and you see a group of sportbikes, stop and talk with them. Please talk to them about riding, about the rights they enjoy in Illinois, and the importance of ABATE in protecting those rights. If we don’t grow as an organization, show our strength, and continue to be involved; well we might lose our ability to fly the way we do today. That's all for now. I’ll see you at our next membership meeting Thursday August 18th at the VFW Hall at 7 p.m. - SKI Safety & Ed George Hurst I was riding to the Long Branch yesterday on a nice black top road getting ready to turn on a nicer black top road. I wasn't looking at the road when I made the turn and hit the gas. Suddenly the back tire was around even with the front tire I want a major slide. On my trip back I noticed a bunch of small white gravel that had Spilled Out of somebody's truck all around that corner. You always have to be aware of the road conditions and your surroundings. It only takes a microsecond to have a bad day. Ride aware George Downed Riders Benefit By: George Hurst, Chairman The lord gave us another rain-free warm day for the benefit. Smokin Bob's crew ran out of food and had to get more. They cooked and served food all day long, and gave us the money. The music was good as usual. Thank Scrapyard,Hip Bone Sam,and Rock house if you see them. Thank you to all the dunk tank and swimsuit girls. A special thank you to Jamie Richardson. For the second year she won the swimsuit contest and donated the money back to the benefit. Thank you to the chapter members that worked up to 12 hours on benefit day. Most of those members worked all day and paid the $5 donation to help the benefit. I want to thank the members that brought items for the auction and door prize items to the chapter meetings. We will have the numbers at the next meeting. George Lincoln Land ABATE Officers President George Hurst (217) 306-1944 [email protected] JD’s Cues & Brews 2256 N. August 2016 Legislative Update Josh “SKI” Witkowski - Legislative Coordinator [email protected] I was eating dinner at Duffy’s Tavern in Utica with a Brother after a day of riding several hundred miles together. While eating, he asked what I did as part of ABATE. After hearing what I do, he asked me “ How can you stand those politicians? They should all be locked up in my opinion.” This isn’t the first time I’ve heard this statement, or something close to it. I’ve heard it from many different people from all walks of life. I get it. We are all frustrated with the behavior of some of our elected officials. The gridlock at the statehouse has led to a very polarizing and toxic climate statewide. In this situation, you have two choices. You can throw your arms up in frustration and walk away from talking to your representatives, or you can dig in and still try to get our voice heard at the statehouse. ABATE works hard to make sure your voice is still heard under the dome and our efforts pay off. Republicans and Democrats couldn’t agree on a budget for the 2nd straight year, but they could agree on motorcycles having more visibility. Last year, our LED lighting bill became law without opposition. This year the Governor signed HB4105 , the blue dot tail light bill. It passed both houses of the legislature without opposition and is now law. You will be able to use custom tail light covers that have a blue dot (not exceeding 1” in diameter) in the middle of them, creating a contrast that is easier for people to see when your brake is applied. That’s two sessions in a row that ABATE has advanced legislation to law helping motorcyclists in the state despite ongoing infighting among some officials. ABATE can do this because we work to promote good working relationships with our representatives. We volunteer, we attend meetings, we visit them at the statehouse, and we even go to fundraisers. That’s where you come in, I need volunteers. Volunteers are needed to attend events with me, to work on the campaigns of the officials we support, and to learn about what I do as your legislative coordinator. For ABATE to continue to be successful, we need to be strong. That strength comes from our members. Will you step up to continue that tradition? As always if you have any questions about the legislators we are supporting, or the issues we are working on feel free to email or call me. Be sure to check out the PR article for details on a federal anti profiling resolution. I look forward to seeing many of you at the next chapter meeting Thursday August 18th at 7p.m. at the VFW on stockyard road. Until then, keep the rubber side down and the shiny side up - SKI Letter From The Editor Dear A.B.A.T.E.
