PRESIDENT’S REPORT
George Hurst
Happy New Year Lincoln Land. I’ve moved up a notch on the
newsletter ladder so you hear from me earlier. I have a couple of
ideas that I hope will make us a stronger chapter. A better neighbor
to chapters around us. Come to a meeting and see what’s going on
with your chapter.
I went to the BOD meeting last month. The regional party will be
in May as of now. The main man behind this region, Kevin “Cap”
Goudschaal passed away a couple weeks ago. ABATE lost a good
member and friend in Cap.
There are reports of police profiling bikers in cut-offs. If you see
or hear of this happening somewhere let the chapter or state know
about it.
Howard Nation and the bike raffle made $36,000 this year. This is
how the State pays its bills, help sell some tickets this year.
When you come to a meeting you hear everything, a small portion
gets in this newsletter. Come to a meeting and be more informed,
meet new people, even tell us what we’re doing wrong.
Help keep us free ~ George

ABATE serves free Thanksgiving dinner for needy

Thanksgiving Dinner for the community at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Sunday, Nov.
22, 2015, in Springfield, Ill. Next Photo: Tresa Hamilton, center, serves desserts/Justin L. Fowler/The
State Journal-Register ] NOTE: Behind Tresa is her grand-daughter helping, as well.
Members of the Lincoln Land chapter of ABATE were dishing out helpings of turkey, mashed potatoes
and dressing Sunday during their 29th annual Thanksgiving dinner for the elderly and needy.
Kevin Coleman of Farmersville is a member of the Shoal Creek chapter of the motorcycle
advocacy group and traveled to Springfield to help out with the free dinner.
"It's
our way of telling the less fortunate that we are out here, we care about them, and they mean something
to us," said Coleman, who also rides with the Christian Motorcycle Club. "This is our way of giving back."
Bobbi Ozanic of Springfield, president of the Lincoln Land chapter of ABATE, said the dinner was previously held at Kumler United
Methodist Church. It was moved to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception parish hall near Fifth Street and Lawrence Avenue this year,
which gave organizers more room.
"Kumler was a little small to serve our guests," Ozanic said. "We wanted to give the cathedral a chance." She expected to serve about 400
people Sunday, which is similar to last year's number.
ABATE stands for A Brotherhood Aimed Towards Education. The group lobbies on behalf of motorcycle riders. The local chapter,
which has about 600 members in Sangamon and Menard counties, is also associated with the Christmas Toy Run for Contact Ministries and
the Easter Basket Run to Hope School, among its other charitable work. "ABATE is a grassroots organization," Ozanic said. "We support the
community and want the community to support us and understand that motorcyclists are here to be helpful as well as be seen."
One of the people who appreciated Sunday's dinner was Springfield resident Tracy Daggett. She was at the dinner with her 11-yearold daughter and a family friend who told her about the event. "Recently, we had our food stamps cut by about $30," Daggett said. "In the
absence of family, you get a sense of community here. It's great to be around people who are happy to see you. ... I got a big hug from a
couple of folks this morning. It's wonderful to have someone who shows that they appreciate you." Daggett said that she and her daughter
moved into an apartment in January after renting a house that had a leaky roof and appliances that didn't work.
In addition to turkey, Sunday's menu included mashed potatoes, gravy, homemade dressing, corn, green beans and dessert.
Back in the kitchen, ABATE member Ed Pehlman was running an industrial-size mixing machine to mash the potatoes. He's been on potato
duty for the past 28 years. "Potato Ed they call me," Pehlman said. "I have a lot of friends here. I like helping people."
Most of the food was donated by area businesses, and ABATE covered the remainder of the costs.

SAFETY & ED COORDINATOR
Lincoln Land Brothers & Sisters,
Things are slow with the schools right now,
so no classes this month yet. We will have a safety
seminar sometime this spring. Let you know more
when things get planned.
Promote Motorcycle Awareness ~ George
Here we are, another year in the book of life.
First I would like to thank everyone for their vote to
make me your membership coordinator for another year.
From my heart I do appreciate it.
I am looking forward to making things better for our chapter as
well as those around us. I am going to try and get our neighboring chapters
to become more involved with their neighboring chapters to share ideas of
what works for them and what has worked for us. Hopefully we can share
ideas that make ABATE as a whole better and stronger. Remember,
strength comes in numbers. The more we have, the stronger we become.
We also need those members that become a part of our family.
Yes you can pay your dues and support ABATE, but if you take the time
to come to a meeting or come to our events, you’ll find an overwhelming
number of people that truly are a part of a big family. ABATE members
are there for ABATE support, but sometimes we all need a little personal
support or uplifting. I have seen we are rich with Brothers and Sisters that
are there to console us when we need it. They’re there when you need a
ride or something done to help a member out. They’re there when we need
help setting up for an event, but most of all we are there for each other as a
Family. I can truly say I love my ABATE Family and wouldn’t trade them
for the world. My goal this year is, younger members along with, ABATE
is an ALL BIKES WELCOME organization. We are going to need a
legacy to pass on to the next generation and the younger crowd will have
to be that generation that takes the torch. Let’s try to get some members to
hand the torch too. I encourage everyone to visit our state web site and
thumb through all the information. There is a lot to learn within the pages
to help recruit and inform yourself and those we want as members.
I encourage everyone to attend the seminar January 15, 16. I had
a blast last year. Come join in the family celebration. I also hope to
represent us well as an Instructor for the membership workshop at the state
seminar.

Happy New Year my friends,
We had our elections for new officers
at our December meeting, which was also our
Christmas dinner. We had a great turnout, over 50
members (what, almost 10% of our membership).
We have new officers working for the good of the
organization. This should be great for the new year.
As for our treasury, we voted on the donations our
chapter will make for 2015 and it was a good outcome.
We are supporting very important efforts at the state
and federal level which protect our freedoms. ,
If you ever have any questions or concerns, my door is
always open. Thank you, Bobbi

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 2015 ~ POE'S 99TH DISTRICT REPLACEMENT MOVES TO
STATE HOUSE FROM GOVERNOR'S OFFICE
SPRINGFIELD - Former State Rep. Raymond Poe resigned his 20 year plus seat in
the Illinois House and moved up to head Illinois Agriculture last week, just in time
for Governor Rauner's wife's chief of staff to move into his Capitol office with
unanimous support from Sangamon County Republicans.
And with March 15 2016 GOP primary petitions to begin being filed Monday, it may be that the new State Rep for Illinois' 99th House - Sara Wojcicki
Jimenez - might just escape a intra-party battle right out of the box.
That's likely a reason for the crisp political timing of all those moves, but
that's not how Jimenez' announcement was presented Friday by the House Republican Organization.
Jimenez, "Chief of Staff to First Lady Diana Rauner, was raised in Springfield and offers a unique profile to the Republican Party while demonstrating a compassion and understanding of state government, the legislative process and a key
ability to be a strong advocate for Sangamon County residents in state government," the announcement says.
“Sara Wojcicki Jimenez is a rising star in the Republican Party who will be a unique voice for Sangamon County in
state government,” said Sangamon County Republican Chairman Rosemarie Long. “Sara has served as an elected official in
Springfield and is well known in the community. She has immense state government experience as a former state house reporter, Press Secretary for House Republican Leader Tom Cross and Chief of Staff to the First Lady. Sara will be able to hit
the ground running on day one.”
“Sara Wojcicki Jimenez is a good choice to serve as State Representative for Sangamon County,” said former Rep.
Raymond Poe. “Many good candidates applied, including close friends and supporters. The committee had a tough decision
to make.”
But it's fairly clear who the Governor wanted to succeed Raymond Poe - someone more likely to be in harmony with
the Rauner Turnaround Agenda.
The governor personally congratulated Jimenez with the following statement. “We offer our sincerest congratulations to
Sara on her pending appointment to the Illinois House of Representatives. As a key member of the Administration, she has
been a tireless worker who helped advance key priorities from agency transformation to restoring the Executive Mansion. We
will miss working alongside her every day," he said.
“Sara is a true public servant, with a wonderful spirit and passion for serving the people of Illinois. We know she will represent her district admirably in the General Assembly and look forward to the contributions she’ll make on behalf of her constituents and all Illinoisans.”
There's been buzz about Jimenez' fairly recent conversion from voting Democrat in the primaries up until she started working
for former House Minority Leader Tom Cross in late 2009. It wasn't until 2010 that she pulled a Republican ballot.
Jimenez was a state house reporter, communications professional and senior state government official that worked for Cross
and the late Judy Baar-Topinka before becoming First Lady Rauner's chief of staff.
She's married to a state employee, and has three year old twins. [SOURCE: http://illinoisreview.typepad.com/illinoisreview]
