Today is Sunday, September 15th
THE TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Tithing helps people to develop and share gifts we have
received in abundance, that we may serve God and others in a
way that pleases God. “Well done, my good and faithful
servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you
greater responsibilities...” (Mt. 25:21).
The Men’s Club will meet at the Hofbrauhaus (in the South
Side) at 6:15 this evening. Carpoolers will meet at St. Gabriel
Parking Lot at 5:35.
Regular C.C.D. classes on Monday in the school at 6:30.
Parent-Teacher Initial Meeting in the parish hall on
Tuesday at 7:00. This is always a very informative meeting for
all who attend.
Regular Thursday Night Bingo begins with the Early Birds
at 7:00 in the parish hall. Come enjoy an evening of fun and
relaxation with your friends. Prizes are as much as State Laws permit!
Our Lady of Guadalupe Devotions precede the 11:30
Mass next Saturday to pray for the end of the evil of abortion in
our country.
The first RCIA Class will be Monday, September 16th in the
Rectory at 8:00.
Be sure to buy several of the Christian Mothers Special
November Raffle tickets ($20 each). Prizes awarded every

RESPECT LIFE NEWS
Cain vs. Abel...”Brother kills brother. Like the first fratricide, every murder is a
violation of the “spiritual” kinship uniting mankind in one great family, in which all share the
same fundamental good: equal personal dignity. Not infrequently the kinship ‘of flesh and
blood’ is also violated; for example when threats to life arise within the relationship between
parents and children, such as happens in abortion or when, in the wider context of family or
kinship, euthanasia is encouraged or practiced.”
(Pope John Paul II, The Gospel of Life, n.8)

St. Gabriel Conference, Society of St. Vincent de Paul 5200 Greenridge Dr., Pgh., PA 15236
Subject: United Way & Combined Federal Campaign, St. Vincent de Paul Society
It’s that time again when the United Way and Combined Federal Campaign (the United Way
for federal workers) have begun their annual drives. Our St. Vincent de Paul Society is an
approved recipient in the Contributor Choice section for each agency.
Last year our
Conference received $6,198 from the United Way and $5,345 from the Combined Federal
Campaign. We used your pledge money to help needy families in our own area. Again we
ask for your support. If you are going to pledge a donation through either agency, we ask
that you consider giving all or part of it to the St. Vincent de Paul, St. Gabriel Conference. To
do this, fill out your pledge contributor choice section and designate: Agency Code #528 – to
the United Way or Agency Code #89706 to the Combined Federal Campaign of S.W.P.A.
If you have already pledged a donation and did not make a designation, you can change it.
Ask your employer for a new form. Cancel your previous pledge and designate our Society in
the Contributor Choice Section. If you have any questions, please call 412-881-4855. Again,
we thank you for your support to help our own people in need over these hard times.
We also ask for your prayers.

meeting you’ll want to come back to another! Please give the Men’s Club a chance this year.
We are going to try some new things and would love to see some new faces to make this a

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY
If you would like to share your talent with those in need, come and join
our newly formed Prayer Shawl Ministry Group. Care and love of knitting
and crochet have been combined into a prayerful ministry that reaches out
to those in need of comfort and solace. Many blessings are knitted into
every shawl. The knitter or crocheter begins each shawl with prayers for
the recipient. Intentions are continued throughout the creation of the
shawl.
When the shawl is completed it is sent along its way to wrap, enfold, comfort, cover, give
solace, mother, hug, shelter and beautify the recipient. We would like to meet once each
month. Dates and location have not yet been finalized. Keep your eyes on the bulletin for
more information. If you would like to be involved, but don’t knit or crochet, perhaps you would
like to make a donation of yarn or money to purchase yarn. Please contact either Elaine
Averbeck (412-881-0311) or Joanne Chesnos (412-885-8482) for more information.

October is Respect Life Month, and the first Sunday, October 6, is Respect Life Sunday.
All parishioners are invited to join other local parishes at 1:45 pm at the traffic light on
Brownsville Road by Brentwood Towne Square. People will line both sides of Brownsville
holding signs – there are no pictures on the signs that will be provided. We will gather for an
hour of silent prayer from 2-3 pm.
On this same day, in more than 1,000 cities across the U.S. and Canada, the National Life
Chain will be held. It is the largest peaceful, prayerful, pro-life, public witness in the world.
Prayer is our greatest weapon against abortion, and a large quantity of signs makes a
statement of solidarity by the Christian community that abortion kills children.

How do you feel about God? One way (among many) you can help answer that question is
the Women’s Emmaus Retreat, led by women like you who have struggled with all the same
questions about life and God that you have. The Emmaus Retreat is designed to be low-key,
laid back and not “preachy.” You will listen to other women like yourself talk about their
journey to know more about God.
It is not required for you to be Catholic, Christian, or a member of any parish. You will have
your own room at the Spiritan Center in Bethel Park, the food is excellent, the retreat center
and grounds are calm and peaceful, and it will be a weekend that you will never forget.
The cost of the weekend is $175. The dates are October 4th to 6th.
Please include a $50 deposit with your application (found in the back of
Church) so a spot can be reserved for you, as space is limited.
Any questions, please contact either of the persons below.
If you don’t have the money, please don’t let this stop you.
Please call or email for further information or an application.

Altar Duty Volunteers Needed
Friday mornings a great group of ladies get together to clean our beautiful St. Gabriel
Church Altar. It is light work (some dusting & vacuuming) in the Sanctuary – it never takes
more than an hour – you would probably be scheduled only once a month or every other
month. We are always looking for new faces to join us, if you prefer to work with someone,
please let me know. I can always put your name on a sub list too. Call Theresa Maier (412886-0473) if you are interested in taking care of God’s most holy place – His Home!
