Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time September 6, 2015 From the Pastor’s Desk... A few quotes from Catholic Church Documents for Considera on on this Labor Day Weekend: “No considera on of the problems associated with development could fail to highlight the direct link between poverty and unemployment. In many cases, poverty results from a viola on of the dignity of human work, either because work opportuni es are limited (through unemployment or underemployment), or ‘because a low value is put on work and the rights that flow from it, especially the right to a just wage and to the personal security of the worker and his or her family’” Charity in Truth, § 63 □-□-□ “Work must be an escape from poverty, not another version of it.” A Place at the Table, §17 □-□-□ “Catholic social teaching supports the rights of workers to choose whether to organize, join a union, and bargain collec vely, and to exercise these rights without reprisal…workers, owners, employers and unions should work together to create decent jobs, build a more just economy, and advance the common good.” Forming Consciences for Faithful Ci zenship, §76 □-□-□ “We need to remember that men and women have ‘the capacity to improve their lot, to further their moral growth and to develop their spiritual endowments.’ Work should be the se ng for this rich personal growth, where many aspects of life enter into play: crea vity, planning for the future, developing our talents, living out our values, rela ng to others, giving glory to God.” Laudato Sí ,On Care for Our Common Home, §127. □-□-□ While some may see Labor Day simply as an unofficial end to the summer season and a reason to picnic, our Church today celebrates the value of our daily labor and the dignity of all workers. Let us pray that God blesses the work of our hands that we may serve as instruments of God’s grace in all that we do.
