be a fir strip cutting event, timed, the fastest to cut a strip will be declared the victor. The match starts at
10:00 AM and will go on until noon (or so).

Black Powder – Steve Serna r epor ted that the shoot star ts one
hour later in January, February and March due to the weather. Steve
indicated that he will notify those on the BP E Mail list on weather
related delays or cancellations.
Legislation – Deborah Smith mentioned that Gov. Chris
Christie back home to stay and is busy at wor k in Tr enton. He is
still open to job offers at the US Federal level, if one should come
up.
Deborah also mentioned the passing of Supreme Court Justice
Antonin Scalia. Antonin was a staunch 2nd Amendment supporter, he interpreted the Constitution as it is written, with the historic 2008 case of District of Columbia v. Heller. We’re all looking
to see who is to take his place.
Deborah then addr essed the “Smart Gun” bill issue. Dem. Sen.
Loretta Weinberg (D-37) and Dem. Sen. Richard Codey (D-27)
sponsors Senate Bill 3249 aka ‘Smart Gun’ bill. The bill passed the
Senate (2/11) and is now waiting the State Assembly. Gov. Chris
Christie did not take action on a similar bill while he was off
campaigning, but did criticize the bill as a government intrusion into
private business.
Deborah finally mentioned yet another NJ Gun Law confusion
issue. The retired police are continually challenged with their right
to carry firearms (CCW). One retiree cannot carry on-the-job because he is a campus cop. You would think, okay it’s a private
school, and that’s the rule. Well, how about a State University like
UMDNJ, where the rules clearly (sic) state that it is allowed. Read
more about this here:

NRA Training – Bob Ross r epor ted that the NRA Tr aining
schedule is complete. Everyone should have received the notification via E Mail. The next training session will be for Shongum NRA
Instructors, a refresher. Bob mentioned the new NRA Basic Pistol
Blended Curriculum to the SSA Membership. This is important to
potential students planning on taking the June 11th NRA Basic Pistol Class, in order to set the appropriate expectation and provide the
time needed to comfortably complete the on-line portion, prior to
the 6/11 class.
Membership – Vince Martino r epor ted the following:
1st Reading – Applicants
Mark Cleverley, Paul Erb, Renee McKenna, Austin Neary

Old Business:
Range & Clubhouse Gated Access – President John Gumann
mentioned the gate project, as being old (very old) news, but is also
new news. The gate will be operational April 1st and members will
be required to use their access cards to lift the gate from this day,
going forward. Adequate testing is (will be) underway to assure
there are no issues on Aprils’ Fool Day.
New Business:
Club member Imre VonBalinth mentioned an omission (or two) in
the newly updated Range Rules; where acronyms are used, but are
not defined.
Imre also asked for an update to specifically mention oper ating
black powder cannons at the SSA range.
Finally, Imre noted that the rules mention using only approved
(AR500) steel targets at the range. How is the member supposed to
know if their own targets are to this specification?
General Membership Meetings:
The March 16th meeting will have guest speaker Police Chief James
Simonetti (Roxbur y), to addr ess the attending member ship.
James is going to campaign for the position of Sheriff of Warren
County, NJ, currently held by Sheriff David P. Gallant.
The April 20th meeting will have guest speaker James Gannon to
address the attending membership. Jimmy is going to campaign for
the position of Sheriff of Morris County, NJ, to replace the retiring
Sheriff Edward V. Rochford.
Good & Welfare –
Pete Hefferan and Deborah Smith will be hosting a Fr iends of
NRA dinner meeting sometime in April or May, bringing a dinner back
to Morris County once again. The Birchwood Manor has been selected
for the event. Please consider attending and/or volunteering to help.
Steve Serna mentioned that ther e a still a little time befor e the
deadline (4/4) to apply for a County Committee position. These
seats could place responsible gun owners into positions where gun
owners have a say in county operations. It’s best to have some representation than none. Anyone who can invest the time, please consider getting involved.
