A violent fit o f sneezing often saves a chilled body tbe consequences of the nerve depression or “ shock” to which it has been subjected, and this shock may iu it* first impression by very lim ited in its area ; for example, the small extent covered by a draught of oold air rushing through tbe crevice o f a door or window. Tbe nerve oeutres are roused from their collapse by the commotion or explosive influence of tbe sneeze. I f sneezing fails, Nature w ill try a shiver, which acts mechanically iu this way. I f this fails, tbe effects are likely to be very serious and bad oonsequenots may ensue. The cold ia slight when sneezing suffice* to reoover the nervous system quickly from its depression, and grave when even strong shivering fails to do so. H o w They Bo I t In Mimouri. '* Down in Southern Missouri,” t the story teller, “ we had a Judge a few years ago, who divorced himself. It happened at Lalls, Mo. His wife waa getting a little old and faded, and the Judge, who waa a well preserved mao, wanted a younger oompaaion. H e made life very nnoomfortable for ber aud ahe went away to pay a visit to a sister. The Jodge immediately took advantage o f her absence and filed a petition in bie own court charging hia wife with de sertion. The case came np in about a month afterward, aud be announced hia intention of trying tbe cose himself. His wife for some reason did not contest, and the Judge granted himself an abao lute divoroe. TH E M UR D E R T R I A L On Wednesday morning, Jan. 28th, tbe direot examination o f Nathan Austin was resumed. He testified that he found an axe on Rookwell’s premises the next Wednesday after the discovery of Wainright’s dead body. [A xe shown witness and identified. A portion of a log which bad been split was also identified by him. 1 H e first saw this piece o f log down near tbe swamp, in the vioinity o f where the body was found, on that same it ;,,,1____, . , , as a woodcutter for tan e in ■ ni<an ten ryears; when i>« he first saw the log it appeared to have been recently sp lit; a portion o f log corresponding with and fitting this pieoe was found on the wood-pile near Bockwell’s house. [ A board which apparen tly hod been used aa a bottom board o f wagon body, was shown witness.] H e testified that he first saw this board on Thursday after the body was found, ia ft shed at Book well’s p la ce; this is the same board; the side with spots on was down ; looked as if it had been smoked ; the board bos two holes near one end, and a worm hole with what appeared to be blood iu it. [T b e board was exhibited to the ju ry.] Found some rope-yarn afterwards, while with surveyor Irons, near Rockwell’s house, but subsequently lost i t ; it was about two feet loug and looked like the pieces found near the swamp. -Cut road out to the cree!~fbr the Goroner to get where the body w as; four of ua carried the body out o f the creek. A . P . Irons was again put upon the stand to prove tbe correctness of a new map he had made of territory in the vioinity of Rookwell’s propery near Bamber. H e also testified that the distance from tbe Ocean Houso, at; Toms River, to theLuker field was two and eighty-one one-hundred tbs of a mile. jNathan Austin wus then recalled. He pointed out on the map the wagon trail from the Rockwell house to the swamp near which the body was found, and showed where the wood had been thrown off. On cross-examination, Austin testified that be l m » about three mile* from Dover Forge ; has been employed in saw mill at Bamber several years ; from tbo mill to Rockwell’s lower cranberry bog is over a m ile; use rope-yarn in tying up shingles; have kuown Rookwell 14 years; never told him that I would get square with him ; w b b accused by him in tbe presence ot Frank Wilsey o f taking posts belonging to him ; never in settle ment allowed fo r the pnAtA - non hi tint. say whether in settlement he ever allowed Rockwell for a log, which Rockwell charged him with taking ; could not say whether he eaid anything iu hie testimony before the Coroner’s jury about looking at the clock iu the hotel. Iu response to a question, ho said it was possible to reach the place where the body waa found in Gedar Oreek by tbe rood leading past his mill. WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON. Nathan Austin, being further oross examined, said he did not see tbe axe or tbe first day o f search; did not see Detective Wilson split any wood on M on day ; was at the bouse on Wednesday with William BeAmes, Robert Hyers and Detective Wilson ; got into the house through a window ; have never been up and down the creek muoh ; there are several piue trees near the old causeway, and there are pino needles scattered all about; could distinguish wagon and horse tracks plainly as late as Thursday ; wbere the road turns, several pieces of rotten plank bad apparently been thrown off. In following up tbe track we went on foot. Two one-borse vehicles bad been driven over tbe ground on Monday (the next day after the finding o f the body ;) the track had been crossed by others wagons where it went into tbe pood. In company with John Alston and others was able to find track from lower bog on Monday. The marks on tbe log are the same distance apart as the nicks on the blade o f axe. [L o g produced and shown to jurors. ] Had seen the log in Prosecutor Middleton's offioe. [The Board being shown witness, be in sisted that a red substance could still be seen on i t ] F irst saw the board on the next Thursday after Wainright’s body was found ; had not examined tbe board under a magnifying glass ; judged it was smoked by its appearance. Went to Mr. Frost’s stable with Robert H yers to measure feet of Rockwell’s horse ; traced out the horse’s front feet with lead pencil. Had seen the axe iu Prosecutor Middleton’a o ffic e ; have never been in bin offioe when no one wee present. Re-direct.—T ried only one door o f the Rockwell bouse on Monday ; H yers sod Alston went there with m e ; tbe pieoes o f plank found at tbe turn o f tbe rood bad tbe same appearance as those on tbe woodpile; they were all rotten. Harvey Craft, sworn. Lives at Bam ber, and ia a lab orer; saw Nathan Aus tin on Sunday, 8 *pt. 21«t, at my house in the afternoon ; went with Austin and William Beamea to search for Wainright’s be Jy ; first went to Rockwell's bouse ; found a one-horse wagon track, which we followed across tbe railroad to the lower end of tbe bog ; made part o f tbe search for tbe body alone, asd was afterwords joined by others ; saw some rope yarn stained with blood, which the others raid they found, but did not see it fo u n d ; in the creek 10 or 15 minutes j Austin went in tbe creek further below. Heard some one ray— "T h e r e he is, b oys!" Went to the place and raw a band and l e g ; tbe body woe bidden k g about a foot scroea. After talking tbe matter o n *, it waa decided that two of u* should stay asd watch tbe body sod that two should gw to Taras iu s sew wed expensive sealskin River and notify tbe Coroner, which was sscqwe. while she ia compelled to wear d on e; when the Coroner arrived, tbe t o t winter’* ekxb gmrmmt, may be s e t, body was takes cut e f A s water, wmpdowu ra tbe seme A goodaera I ped np, and put in tbe carriage. Tapestry looks like Brusrls, as every bod; knows. There are several grades o f 1. hew can distinguish one uii another. Certain ukes command the highest prices, partly because o f the difficulty ol judging the grades But, as buyers gen erally have no means o f knowing one make from another, they have to trust the seller. Buying Tapestry, hen, is apt to be an act o f , vilidenee. W e propo. :: to use it less so. So is i.evBrussels. W e propose it safer. And the die others. ■t is Tapestry carpet? .a is Brussels? One is a opy of the other. Tapestry costs about two-thirds as nuchas Brussels; and, on the floor, there is very little difference between them. rile frame-work o f both is hard inflexible cotton ami jute. If you take a bit o f each and pull the woolen yarn all out. there is left, o f the Brussels, the frame work that holds it together and gives it stifiiuss: it looks like a sieve, with meshes about ten to the inch. O f the Tapestry more is left. When the wool is drawn out of the face, the hack is solid with jute. Pull out this solid back o f jute, ami only the frame-work is le f t ; the same as the frame work o f Brussels. The difference be tween the stuffs o f Brussels and Tapestry, then, is jute in the place o f a part o f the wool. The face o f Brussels and Tapestry, both, is a mas of loops o f colored woolen yam held fast by the hidden frame work o f cotton and jute be low: and the colors form the carpet's ti-niro. The car pets goodn ss as to dur ability depends on the mafc- ing. o f course but. main ly on tile wool til tile loops and what is under the loops. One judges Tapestry by the number o f loops to the inch, ‘The best has ten ; the poor est down to six. Turn it over, and look at the back. The larger the mesh in the frame-work, the more sparse the loops and the wool on the face. What is under the face ? What effect does it have? The loops on the face of Brussels are backed by wool below. The loops on the face of Tapestry are backed by jute. W ool is soft, and jute is hard. T h e wool on the face, o f course, wears longer against a back o f yielding wool than against a back o f unyielding jute. So Brussels wears longer than Tapestry. How much longer? By as much as the hack of wool :•; gent!or to the trampled than ju te; so much; ; ire. It isn’t soft enough ye tile difference felt by o k in use. The mal 's object in using woo! r ad o f iu 'c is only to make .. sof", to wear against, bins softness one . , the foot comes ■ 1. carpet-lining. i h s back of wool in Brussels has another conse quence. It is the source o f colors to make the carpet's pattern. It consists, or rather the wool of the Brus-js>h carpet Consists, - o f several yarns o f different colors lying side by side in little bundles. A t every enth-of-an-inch or so, one ut o f die bundle o f colored .urns is looped above; and he yarn that is taken to form tlie loop is the yarn of lie color the pattern repiires just there. N ow that is tlie whole of the Brussels fabric. Idle Tapestry colors are printed one after another on one c o n tin u o u s ya rn . ( here's nothing more wonlerfnl. Loops are made on he yarn, one after another ; the colors are gauged to lorni tlie pattern as the loops ire made ! Unravel a bit o f I apestry, and watch tlie onps as they disappear, i he pattern is on the yarn, .but three times lon ger! Now, by taking the pattern out, you see how it go t in. Hie yarn was printed. The pattern enlarged three fold was printed on the yam it self; and, when the yarn is looped in the weaving, the » pattern appears! Incredible 'it true! ltd now you see why the rn is sharp, exact, in 1rads; and a little shady, ...exact, in Tapestry. There is no other difference in look between the two. The grades of Brussels: •five frame,” “ four-frame," •tc.— N ot to go into difficult cading, "five-frame" means :iiat the bundles consist of ive yarns; "four-fram e" 'leans four yarns: and so m. The number o f ‘ frames" is ilie proportion o f wool in be carpet, its body, close>ess. weight and softness— ■■alue and durability. “ Five-frame " Brussels .‘roper has its bundles of ive woolen yarns, and these yarns treble— fifteen yarns n a bundle; but nobody nakes it so. Whoever lives where ioe is formed, and so near to a body o f water that the haul* ing will not be too oostly, should have an ioe-honse. Ioe keeps best in large masse* and in building it w ill b e (uutui thst s house to hold enough for two years will cost but little more thau one for a single y e y ’s stock. Occasionally the ioe crop fails over the greater part of tile country. A mild winter will cause no anxiety to one who has a supply o f ice left over. I f one has an abundance of ice, but no house, and has etrtw in plenty, it may be worth while to stack up a lot, though it can hardly be ex* peoted to last all summer. The ioe stack is especially used when the ice-house is not large enough to hold a full supply if the ice is freely used. An ice-stock to be drawn upon during the early port of summer, will allow the store in the house to be a long time undisturbed. If the stack can be made in a shady place, all the better ; select a spot where the water will drain off, and lay. down a tier of rails a foot or &o apart; on these put a layer of brush, and upon the brush straw to the thickness of a fo o t I f possible set a strong post in the centre. Now stack np tire ice as in an ice-house, taking care that the mass does not incline to one side. The covering for the sides may Ire straw, sail hay, swale hay, or even leaves, but the latter will need to bo held in place by boards. A foot in thickness o f protecting materials will do but tliioker will do better; old boards, with braoes to press thorn against the straw, etc., may be ts"ed i f #needed j the stack is to be finished by a roof of straw, put on with pins and rope, ns in finish ing off a hay-stack. On groin farms, where straw is abundant, the mass of ico may be oovored with a great thickness o f , straw, by building a stack over tho ioe. In using from such a stuck the ioo should be taken o ff on all sides regularly, and care taken to properly replace the cov ering. The larger such a staok the bet ter—a cube of ioe twenty feet ou each side. A L I T T L E IIR ItO . A sad story of a Frenoh drummer-boy is told at Heidelburgh in connection with the lost siege of that city. The Austrians were in possession of the place, and the only means o f attacking them was by crossing the old bridge over the rivor Nnokar. But tho defenders wore well prepared for the attack ; they placed their oanuon in such a maimer that it covered tho bridge and its approaches. The Frenoh planted their cannon on the opposite side of tho river, and kept up a terrible fire, but were utterly unable to dislodge tho Austrians from their end o f the bridge. The attackers wore deter mined to take the oity, hut had no other means of doing so than by crossing tho bridge, and that was swept by tho guns of their opponents. They made repeated charges from their side; but each time they advauoed they were mowed down by tho Austrian artillery, or repulsed at tho point o f the bayonet. Tho French band advanced as far as the oentro of tho bridge, exoitiug the soldiery with their martial strains, but woro compelled to retreat with the retreating men. Again and again the musicians advanced and ratceatod w it h th e ir oomruxlaa, until a t lost a little drummer-hoy, disdaining flight, mounted on the parapet of the bridge, and, although his follow-bands men filed with the soldiers, stood his ground manfully, beating vigorously to recall the men to the charge. On rushed the Austrians with fixed bayonets, while the little hero, still beating his drum de fiantly, was run through tho body by some brutal foe. As he fell over the bridge into the rapid rushing river below, the poor boy cried out, “ Oh, my mother, my mother 1" Tho lost words of the little oousoript were heard both by friend and foe, and are yet remem bered in Heidelberg. On wild nights, os the pcasaut crosses the bridge, in fancy he still sees tho form of the little drummer-boy boating the fierce alarm, and still amid the rush of the waters imagines that he hears his dying words, "O h, my mother, my mother!” Cherry Pectoral. A standard rose, said to have been planted by Charlemagne, is one of the great curiosities of the ancient oity of Hildetheim, in Hanover. This rose bush is gnarled and rugged, os becomes its extreme age, and in some places the principal stem is about ns thick as a man’s body. I t grows at tlis eastern side of the apse of the cathedral, and this year the venerable and venerated object lias put forth several new and thrifty shoots. Faers hare been entertained for a long time past that, after its life of a thousand years, the plant was losing its vitality. But now it is apparently tak ing a new lease o f life, and there is mnoh rejoicing in Hildesheim at the fact Tb s person who takes charge of ancient rose-bush is instructed r to g i v e sway a cutting, and its l which are jffonounced the very it o f their kind, are also jealously guarded from Vendol hands Pianos and Organs AYIR’S LOCAL BUSINESS MBECTOEY.
