En medio de la Guerra Civil, los militares se han aliado con la clase alta para
eliminar a la oposición. En el caos generado por esta medida desaparecen
muchos padres de familia, lo que deja a una generación entera de niños sin
familia. Es en este contexto que Dominique conoce a Mateo, Big Max y Kevin.
Atrapados en un conflicto que no entienden, los cuatro se protegen entre sí y
acampan en una cabaña cerca de un lago, creando así su propia familia. Pero la

In the midst of Civil War, the military has allied itself with the wealthy upper
class in order to eliminate the opposition. The resulting chaos leads to the
demise of countless parents that leave an entire generation of children to grow
up without a family. It is within this context that Dominique meets Mateo, quickly
followed by Big Max and Kevin. Caught up in a conflict among adults that
they neither care about nor comprehend, the four of them protect each other
by setting up at a cabin and nearby pond and creating their own family unit.
However, the tranquility is shattered with the arrival of Gabriel, a new recruit
they will have to train.

Robert Morin, director y guionista, nació
en 1949 en Montreal, Quebec. En 1977, en
conjunto con un grupo de amigos y colegas,
fundó La Coopérative de Production Vidéo
de Montréal. Es conocido por Le nèg’, Yes
Sir! Madame… y Requiem pour un beau
sans-coeur, que le valió las nominaciones

Robert Morin, director and writer, was
born in 1949 in Montréal, Québec, Canada.
In 1977, with a group of friends and
colleagues, Morin founded La Coopérative
de Production Vidéo de Montréal. He is
known for Le nèg', Yes Sir! Madame... and
Requiem pour un beau sans-coeur which
was nominated for the Genie Awards for
Best Motion Picture and Best Director.

Henri Bernard, de 86 años, sufre de pérdida de memoria y periódicamente
escapa de su casa en busca de una más cómoda. Sus dos hijos —Gabriel,
fotoperiodista de guerra, y Éric, piloto en entrenamiento— no logran ponerse
de acuerdo sobre cómo lidiar con la enfermedad de su padre dejándolo a él

Henri Bernard, 86, suffers from memory loss and periodically escapes from
his house in search of a more comfortable one. His two sons —Gabriel, a war
photo-journalist, and Éric, a pilot-in-training— disagree on how to deal with
their father’s condition, leaving him and his younger son inhabiting a rustic
cottage in the woods. As the older man's health deteriorates, options become
more limited; when an accident in Afghanistan kills Gabriel’s translator, the
family must come together like never before. The two older brothers will have
to renew the ties that bind them in order to accompany their father to the
enigmatic destination he’s looking for.

Germain es camionero y sufre de síndrome de estrés postraumático después

seeks out his older brother Alain, a struggling writer who spends time drinking
and living in a cheap motel room in New Brunswick. Together they trek to their
hometown in rural Quebec to make sure Germain is doing well.

Award-winning filmmaker Caroline Martel’s
work has been presented to critical acclaim
internationally, including at the Toronto
International Film Festival, the Museum of
Modern Art and the Georges Pompidou
Centre. Martel has been synthesizing
documentary theory and practice for
over a decade, with a special interest in
archives, invisible histories, and audio/visual
technologies and heritage.
This feature documentary takes us on an intriguing human and musical
discovery of the most expressive of electronic instruments, the Ondes Martenot.
A group of Martenot aficionados pursues the legacy of Maurice Martenot
(1898–1980), inventor of an instrument as rare and fragile, as it is magical.
Musicians, artisans and scientists strive to unravel the mysteries of this
“Stradivarius of the electronic age”.

Gaby tiene una granja de corderos llamada Gagnon & Sons, pero no tiene
hijos. En cambio, tiene dos hijas criadas como princesas que viven muy lejos
de él en la gran ciudad. Con gran estoicismo, él se ocupa de las necesidades
cotidianas de su apartada granja familiar, mientras todos sus vecinos venden

Gaby is the owner of a lamb farm: Gagnon & Sons; but he has no sons. Rather,
he has two daughters raised like princesses who live far away in the big city.
He stoically tends to the quotidian needs of his isolated family farm, watching
as his neighbors sell off theirs. One day, his eldest daughter, Marie, arrives from
the city and announces she is getting a divorce. Oblivious to her father's own
financial constraints, she asks him for a large loan to save her from losing her
home. Gaby agrees to help his daughter, then, without telling her, sets out to
sell his farm, dismantling the only life he has ever known.

Sébastien Pilote nació en Saguenay,
Quebec. Tras estudiar cine en la Universidad
de Quebec en Chicoutimi, trabajó como
programador para el festival REGARD sur

cortometraje, Dust Bowl Ha! Ha!, se proyectó

Sébastien Pilote was born in the Saguenay
region of Quebec, and after earning his
degree in cinema at l'Université du Québec
à Chicoutimi, he worked as a programmer
for the Festival Regard sur le court métrage
in Saguenay and as a director of television
news reports. He has directed the features Le
vendeur and Le Démantelèment.

Gabrielle: sin miedo a vivir
Gabrielle es una joven con síndrome de Williams que tiene un don musical

independence. As determined as she is, Gabrielle must still confront other
people's prejudices as well as her own limitations, in the hope of experiencing
a love far from the "ordinary".

Con 18 años cumplidos, Lake tiene una larga relación con Désirée, su
dulce novia activista. Pero, últimamente, siente una inusual atracción
por la clientela de la tercera edad que frecuenta la piscina de la que él
es salvavidas. La madre de Lake encuentra para él un trabajo de verano
como enfermero en un asilo de ancianos, donde conoce al Sr. Peabody,

Eighteen-year-old Lake has been in a straight relationship with sweet
activist Désirée for a while. But lately he finds himself paying special
attention to some of the older male clientele where he reluctantly works
as a lifeguard. His mother gets him hired at a seniors' home, where he
meets Mr. Peabody and sparks fly. Upon discovering that the patients
are being over-medicated to make them easier to manage, Lake decides
to wean Mr. Peabody off his medication and help him escape, resulting
in a humorous and heartfelt road trip that strengthens their bond.

Bruce LaBruce
Bruce LaBruce es un realizador, escritor,
director, fotógrafo y artista canadiense
radicado en Toronto. Comenzó su carrera

Bruce LaBruce is a Toronto-based filmmaker,
writer, director, photographer and artist.
He began his career in the mid-eighties,
developing a series of short experimental
super 8 films and co-editing a punk fanzine
called J.D.s, which began the queercore
movement. He is considered one of the major
figures of the new queer cinema movement.
Inch'Allah
Chloé es una joven ginecóloga canadiense que trabaja en un campo de
refugiados para palestinos en Cisjordania. Ahí, cuida a mujeres embarazadas
bajo la supervisión de Michael, un médico francés… pero ella vive en un
apartamento en el lado israelí. Su relativa libertad le da una perspectiva única
de este mundo dividido en dos. La experiencia diaria, entre puntos de control
y una barrera que separa ambas culturas, confronta a la chica con el conflicto
y las personas que se ven afectadas por él. La guerra la arrastra a una extensa
y profunda aventura personal: sus certezas se rompen y sus convicciones se
ponen a prueba.
Chloé is a young Canadian obstetrician working in a makeshift clinic in a
Palestinian refugee camp in the West Bank, where she treats pregnant
women under the supervision of Michael, a French doctor… but she lives in
an apartment on the Israeli side. Her relative freedom of movement affords
her a unique perspective on this bisected world. Facing daily checkpoints and
the separation barrier, Chloé is confronted with the conflict and the people it
affects. Her encounter with the war draws her into an adventure that’s both
deeply personal and as large as the land: her certainties are shattered, and her
convictions, tested.

born in 1979 in Quebec. She began making
documentary films, including Les Petits princes

Pierre, un profesor retirado, ha decidido llevar una vida tranquila,

The legend of Sarila
La vida puede ser dura y desafiante para los habitantes del Ártico, pero se
vuelve trágica cuando todos los animales de la zona desaparecen derepente,
y la comunidad queda al borde de la hambruna. El joven pero valiente
Markussy desafía al chamán del clan, Croolik, y se embarca junto con sus
amigos Putulik y Apik, además de su adorable y fiel compañero roedor Kimi,

Life can be harsh and challenging for the people who live on the Arctic tundra,
but it turns tragic when all the animals in the area suddenly disappear, leaving
the community on the brink of famine. Young but brave Markussi defies the
clan shaman Croolik, and sets out with his friends Putulik, Apik and their
adorable lemming sidekick Kimi, in search of the legendary land of Sarila, which
is said to be rich in fish, game and fruit. Pursued by the jealous shaman and
confronted with numerous dangers, the intrepid trio must restore the natural
balance of the environment in order to save their people.

Set in futuristic Montreal, humans are about to set foot on Mars, but a
small community of anti-cybernetics is busy trying to slow down time. In the
midst of it all, two men, Jacob and Arthur, become obsessed with the same
woman. Jacob is an emblematic and beloved septuagenarian who creates
captivating music on instruments inspired by the female body; Arthur designs
those musical instruments. The object of their desire, Avril, is a short-winded
photographer looking for inspiration. She agrees to be the model for their
next project, but then gets lost in a virtual world on the way to Mars.

Martha Flaherty was only five when she and her family were moved, along with
a handful of other Inuit families, to Canada’s most northerly island, Ellesmere,

be plentiful and life would be easy. Instead, they discovered that the islands of
the Arctic are among the least hospitable to human life in the world. For years,
they endured hunger and extreme cold. Deprived of the right to an education
and a childhood, Martha had to help her family survive. They have lived through
one of Canadian history’s most sombre and little-known episodes.

Somewhere in an unnamed Sub-Saharan Africa, Komona, a 14-year-old girl,

at the age of 12, and includes her falling in love with a fellow child soldier,
an albino called Magicien. The plot points in this film by Kim Nguyen echo
newspaper stories on the contemporary crisis of child soldiers, which, when
combined with the shaky hand-held camera, suggest the film purposefully
strives for a documentary feel in between its phantasmagoric elements.

Introvertida y singularmente centrada, Sarah vive para correr. Cuando es
aceptada en el programa de atletismo en carreras de media distancia, en la

Tom, un joven redactor publicitario afligido porque perdió a su pareja

Anna siente nervios de llegar a una pequeña y unida comunidad de Igloolik,

Co-director Marie-Hélène Cousineau formed
the Arnait Video Collective. Along with
co-director Madeline Piujuq Ivalu, she directed
the feature film Before Tomorrow, winner of
the Best Canadian First Feature Film at the
2008 Toronto International Film Festival.
She also co-produced the 2011 Associated
Press Television News (aptn) documentary
series, The Uluit.
Anna is nervous when she and her son, Tomas, arrive in the small, close-knit
community of Igloolik in the Canadian Arctic. Anna had a short-lived affair with
Tomas’s Inuk father when she worked in Igloolik. But Tomas, now 14 years old,
was born and raised in his mother’s native city of Montreal and never knew
much about his origins. Tomas is bright, strong, and curious about his father’s
culture, but his father is no longer around to show him the way. For Tomas’s
mother and Inuit family, the joy of his homecoming is mixed with memories
of a brief and painful chapter in their shared history.

This powerful study of alienation and isolation opens
in Montreal, where Christian, its protagonist, attends
a bloody wrestling match. Afterwards, he journeys to
a hospital where a loved-one lies comatose. He then
commits a crime, a crime of compassion. A troubled soul,
he must now flee not only the law, but the deep ethical
consequences of his act. The path he sets upon leads him
to where all roads end: a small community by the name
of Radisson, 1500 km north of Montreal. Slowly, he starts
his life anew among his new neighbors, a new job, a new
interest in life. His story drifts along, somewhere between
fiction and reality.

In rural Quebecois Gothic, photographed in hypnotic,
high-contrast black-and-white, All That She Wants focuses
on a small, vicious circle of-down-and-out-characters. It
is a story about the conflicts of confronted neighbors, a
portrayal of thugs, and a ferocious radiography of life in
an isolated place somewhere in Quebec; and, mainly, it is
a nightmarish study on grief after suffering a great loss.
When her mother is institutionalized, Coralie lives with her
stepfather Jacob in an Arcadian backwater; the chaos of
the title comes courtesy of ex-con Pierrot, whose release
from prison sets up a grim cycle of violent events.

and other iron aficionados. One day, four intruders visit
Colmor in search of a corner of twister paradise. The old
man proves to be a lot more than they expected.

Danger lurks in the woods. Day and night, six armed men
patrol the wilderness, expecting a showdown. While they
are wandering the forest, one man disappears like a ghost,
and other fives are getting worried. Where has he gone?
What is going on with the soldiers? What the hell are
they searching for? Denis Côté has described his 2010
featurette, commissioned by the Jeonju International Film
Festival, as a study of masculinity and war. Those were the
conceptual elements of what became an abstract story
of group loneliness and intimacy; a fake war film with
endearing toy soldiers wandering and wondering what the
next adventure is made or unmade of.

Set on the fringe of society, in a remote part of the
countryside, Curling takes a keen look at the unusual
private life of a father and his daughter. Between
his unremarkable jobs, Jean-François Blain devotes
an awkward energy to 12-year-old Julyvonne. The
fragile balance of their relationship will be jeopardized
by some very dreary circumstances. Indecipherable
blackness, marked by madness, incest and death,
works its way into a system that it gradually corrodes
without ever gaining the upper hand. Curling is a
brilliant reworking of Psycho, in which mother and
son have been replaced by father and daughter.

An open-ended exploration of the energies and rituals of
various workplaces. From one worker to another and one
machine to the next; hands, faces, breaks, toil: what kind
of absurdist, abstract dialogue can be started between
human beings and their need to work? What is the value
of the time we spend multiplying and repeating the
same motions that ultimately lead to a rest –a state of
repose, the quality of which defies definition. Denis Côté
takes where he left at Bestiaire and lets the audience
contemplate on the concept of work through a playful
(often unusually funny as well) cinematic meditation on
one of the oldest trades of the universe.

Esta es una exploración abierta en torno a los rituales
en los lugares de trabajo. De un trabajador a otro, de
una máquina a otra; manos, rostros, horas de descanso
y trabajo. ¿Qué clase de diálogo absurdo y abstracto

Por Roxanne Sayegh, Directora Ejecutiva, ridm
El Festival Internacional de Documentales de Montreal (Recontres
Internationales du Documentaire de Montréal, ridm), el único de su
tipo en Quebec, presenta los mejores filmes de no ficción, ya sean
estos de directores bien establecidos como de nuevos talentos.
Cada noviembre, ridm proyecta cerca de 150 películas de factura
regional, canadiense o del extranjero y organiza una docena de
actividades paralelas, entre ellas, talleres, clases magistrales,
debates y mesas redondas. 172
Durante los días de festival, ridm también aloja el mercado de
documentales Doc Circuit Montreal. Además de todo ello, ridm
presenta películas a través de diferentes actividades anuales

Quebec’s only film festival dedicated to documentaries, the Montreal
International Documentary Festival (ridm) presents the best reality
based films, including the works of established directors and new
talents.
Every November, the ridm screens nearly 150 domestic and foreign
films and organizes a dozen parallel activities including workshops,
master classes, debates and round tables.
During the festival the ridm also hosts a documentary market,
Doc Circuit Montreal. In addition to the festival, the ridm presents
films through a number of year-round activities (Young Audiences,
Docville, RIDM Behind Bars, Cinéma sous les étoiles, among others).
The next ridm will take place from November 12 to 23, 2014.

Jessica Moss, violinista, y Efrim Menuck, cantante y guitarrista, se esfuerzan

circle of musicians. The couple tours constantly to keep the bills paid —Menuck
is also a member of Godspeed You! Black Emperor— and now they are living
their nomadic life with a baby in tow. Their uncompromising artistic vision and
philosophy of living are carefully explored and captured by filmmaker Helene
Klodawsky.

Laura Bari es una cineasta autodidacta
originaria de Argentina, que actualmente
reside en Montreal. Fascinada por aquello
que resulta singular y diferente, Bari utiliza
el cine como una vía para fundir el arte con
temas de salud y reeducación. Su primer
filme, Antoine, fue ganador de 15 premios y
se proyectó en 30 festivales alrededor del
mundo. Su trabajo más reciente es Ariel.
Originally from Argentina, self-taught
filmmaker Laura Bari currently resides in
Montreal. Fascinated by singularity and
difference, she chooses film as a way to
merge arts, health and reeducation. Winner

Joseph Hillel nació en Puerto Príncipe y vive
en Montreal. Dirigió su primer documental,
Ordinaire ou super, regards sur Mies van
der Rohe, en 2004. Como director de
la productora Qu4tre par Quatre Films,

Joseph Hillel was born in Port-au-Prince
and lives in Montreal. He directed his first

Beyond Haiti —known for its natural disasters and humanitarian aid debacle—,
lies Ayiti Toma, “the country that is ours”. This documentary offers a broad
yet unique look at the ostensibly well-known country: it presents Ayiti Toma
both through the eyes of Haitians including politicians, intellectuals, voodoo
practitioners and youth from hard-hit and dangerous neighborhoods, and from
the point of view of anthropologists, historians and aid workers, including actor
Sean Penn. Their testimony portrays the vibrant Haitian culture as the key to
the future, if Haiti is to become Ayiti Toma.

safe, properly maintained schools and culturally based, equitable education
to the world — culminating in a delegation of six First Nations ambassadors
travelling to Geneva to present at the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child.

La llegada de la compañía minera Osisko desata el entusiasmo entre los
habitantes de Malartic, una comunidad de 3 mil 600 almas en Quebec,
Canadá. Pero confrontadas con la implacable legislación minera, la cual
prioriza el derecho de explotar los recursos del subsuelo por encima del
derecho a la propiedad, muchas familias y personas mayores deben dar por
perdidos ciertos elementos de su herencia, además de su estilo de vida, para

Simon Plouffe obtuvo un certificado
en guion por la Universidad de Quebec

Simon Plouffe obtained a screenwriting
certificate at the University of Quebec in
Montreal and a bfa in Film production at
Concordia University. His work experiences
as a sound recordist led him to explore the
world of sound and its various usages, either in
terms of creating or designing soundtracks for
his own films. In 2007, he debuted at directing
with short fiction film A Taste of Feathers.
The arrival of the mining company Osisko creates a lot of excitement in
Malartic, a small community of 3,600 souls in Quebec, Canada. Faced with the
implacable Mining Act, which prioritizes the right to exploit subsoil resources
rather than the right to property, many families and seniors need to write off
certain elements of their heritage —plus a part of their lifestyle— to make room
for the largest open-pit gold mine in Canada. The characters in L'or des autres
experience in their own way this major change that will affect their lives and
urban environment.

An allegory of mankind heading for disaster, this animated
short is a tragic vision inspired by the fourth movement
of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. Drawing on
the composer’s brilliant ability to evoke work and labor
in his music, animator Patrick Bouchard brings earth to
life through animated clay sculptures, creating a tactile
nightmare in which man is his own slave driver.

pequeño espera a que le permitan ver a su madre

In the vestibule of a hospital room, a young boy
waits to see his dying mother. The clamor and
spiralling movements of bodies around him intensify,
forming a grotesque circus —a cacophonous circle
that pushes the child back, depriving him of one
final touch of his mother's hand. Using rotoscoped
drawings suggestive of charcoal sketches, as well
as 3D and object animation techniques, The Circus
compels viewing with its unsettling realism. Nicolas
Brault's highly personal film casts a poignantly sincere
gaze on the heartbreak of a child facing the fearful,
mysterious experience of his mother's death.

Using the simplicity of pen and ink drawings with graceful
superimposition effects on glossy paper, Marie-Hélène
Turcotte succeeds in capturing all the nuances of this

This animated short tells the story of Kaspar, a young
man who discovers life —and light—after spending his
entire life in a dark cave, with a small wooden horse as
only company. Based on the story of Kaspar Hauser, the
famous 19th century orphan who has inspired countless
artists, this isolated character knows nothing of life. When
the “man in black” comes to get him, Kaspar is suddenly
thrust out into the wide unknown for the very first time. An
impressionistic and poetic fable about the discovery of a
world that is both magnificent and terrifying.
This animated film by Martine Chartrand recounts the
friendship between a young Félix Leclerc and Frank
Randolph MacPherson, a Jamaican chemical engineer
and university graduate who works for a pulp and paper
company. An inveterate jazz fan, MacPherson inspired
Leclerc, who wrote a song about the log drives and
entitled it MacPherson, in honor of his friend. Chartrand
worked with paint-on-glass animation shot with a 35mm
camera. Her short won two awards at the Montreal
World Film Festival (FFM) in 2012.

which explores in a playful way the wealth and variety of
the French language in Canada.
La relación secreta de una pareja contemporánea
tiene un final agridulce durante una llamada telefónica
nocturna. La estática en la bocina del celular acentúa la
distancia entre ellos mientras se desgastan en detalles
de su relación —ella quiere terminar, él no puede
darse por vencido tan fácilmente. Pero los visuales del
cortometraje revelan algo completamente diferente:
la épica reinterpretación de su relación, a punto de
terminar, está situada en la China feudal, donde la
influencia familiar, las presiones culturales y su deseo de
aventuras cobran más sentido. El amor se va a la guerra

A modern-day couple’s secret love affair comes to a
bittersweet end during an evening phone call. Cell phone
static creates distance between them as they anguish over
details of their relationship —she wants to put an end to it,
he won’t give up so easily. But the visuals of the film reveal
something entirely different: the epic re-imagining of their
ending relationship is set in feudal China, where family
influence, cultural pressures and their lust for adventure
makes more sense. Love goes to war over art.

Wapikoni celebra diez años de poderosos cortometrajes
y creaciones musicales únicas
Desde 2004, Wapikoni móvil ha proporcionado a los jóvenes de las Primeras
Naciones la oportunidad de expresarse a través de creaciones audiovisuales y
musicales y para mostrarse dentro de su comunidad y en el extranjero. Hasta
ahora, más de seiscientos cortometrajes se han dirigido, lo que representa un
patrimonio cultural único. Los cortometrajes de Wapikoni han sido honrados por
más de setenta premios en festivales nacionales e internacionales.
Para reconocer este patrimonio y celebrar su décimo aniversario, Wapikoni
lanza una retrospectiva que destaca el talento incomparable de los directores
indígenas en Quebec. Teniendo en cuenta que el Festival Internacional de Cine
en Guadalajara homenajea a la provincia de Quebec este año, Wapikoni ofrece
organizar una proyección de esta retrospectiva durante el festival para celebrar
el cine emergente de Quebec, mismo que no debe ser ignorado, ya que da una
voz fuerte y original al cine contemporáneo.

Since 2004, Wapikoni mobile has provided First Nations youth the opportunity to
express themselves through audiovisual and musical creations and to showcase
themselves within their community and abroad. To this date, more than 600
short films have been directed, which represents a unique cultural heritage.
Wapikoni short films have been honoured by more than 70 awards in national
and international festivals.
To recognise this heritage and celebrate its 10th anniversary, Wapikoni
is releasing a retrospective highlighting the incomparable talent of Quebec
indigenous directors. Considering that the Guadalajara international film
festival honours the province of Quebec this year, Wapikoni offers to organise
a screening of this retrospective during the festival to celebrate Quebec First
Nations emerging cinema, which should not be ignored, as it gives a strong and
original voice to the contemporary cinema of Quebec.
