Paese storico della Ciociaria:
Arroccata su di una collina che domina l’ultimo tratto della valle del Liri,
San Vittore si trova al crocevia dei confini tra Lazio, Campania e Molise.
Venne fondata nell’XI secolo, anche se nel terrirorio comunale in località
Marena-Falascosa, sono venuti alla luce ampi tratti di mura megalitiche
di probabile origina sannitica e identificate con i resti di Aquilonia. Nel
medioevo appartenne a Montecassino, e proprio al dominic monastico la
città deve il suo nome. Un tempo centro di fiorenti attività artigianali, tra
cui la lavorazione dell’argilla, la fusione del bronzo e la lavorazione del
legno, oggi, quella di San Vittore è una realtà basata sull’industria, ad
eccezione di qualche fornace per la cottura dei laterizi. Numerosi sono i
reperti di epoca pre-romana e romana, ed in particolare la cinta di mura
megalitiche, lunga oltre un Km e mezzo, che si snoda lungo le pendici
occidentali del monte Sammucro. Importante la chiesa di San Nicola,
definita “il monumento principale di San Vittore”, notevole per i cicli
piltorici trecenteschi delle opere di misericordia e del martirio di Santa
Margherita d’Antiochia; interessanti la chiesa di Santa Maria della Rosa
che, seguendo uno schema antichissimo, presenta un campanile posto al
centro della facciata, e la chiesa della Madonna delle Grazie, presso il
cimitero, restaurata nel 1968.
Clung on a hill which dominates the last edge of the Liri Valley, San
Vittore straddles across the borders of Latium, Campania and Molise. It
is generally acknowledged that the town was founded in the 11th century
even though in locality Marena-Falascosa stretches of Megalithic walls,
probably of Samnite origin, have come to fight and have been identified
with the remnants of the old fortress of Aquilonia. In the Middle Ages
San Vittore was a possession of the Abbey of Montecassino and even its
name testifies that it was under monastic dominion. Once a centre of

flourishing handicraft activities which included the working of
clay, bronze casting and wood carving, today San Vittore’s
economy is mainly industry-based, with the exception of some
brick kilns. Within the town’s surroundings much evidence relating
to pre-Roman and Roman eras have been found, such as a belt of
Megalithic walls winding for over one and a half kilometers along
the western slopes of Sammucro Mount. The Church of San Nicola,
of exceptional importance, is defined as “the principal monument
of San Vittore”, and renowned for its 14th century painting cycle
depicting the works of charity and the martyrdom of St. Margaret
of Antioch. S. Maria della Rosa is another interesting church for
its ancient structure which features a bell-tower at the centre of its
façade. There is also, to be viewed and admired, the old Church of
the Madonna delle Grazie, located near the town cemetery and
which was restored in 1968.

Our Italian school classes enjoying art, cooking and learning
the Italian language.
Another season has wrapped up with a successful year. Over
30 boys and girls ages 9 to 17 played together from all three
Italian clubs: Ciociaro, Caboto and Fogolar. Thanks again to
all who participated. See you next year.

Lime Glaze
Gaetano Aloisi Masella
(September 30, 1826 – November 22, 1902) was an
Italian Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. He
served as Prefect of the Congregation of Rites from 1899
until his death, and was elevated to the cardinalate in
1887.
Gaetano Aloisi Masella was born in Pontecorvo; he was the uncle of future
cardinal Benedetto Aloisi Masella. He was ordained to the priesthood on June
3, 1849, in the Lateran Basilica, and then served as secretary of the nunciature
in Naples. Aloisi Masella later became auditor of the nunciature to Germany in
1858, and of the nunciature to France in 1862. In 1869 he entered the service
of the Roman Curia as consultor for diplomatic affairs in the Vatican Secretariat
of State. He was made a referendary prelate of the Supreme Tribunal of the
Apostolic Signature in 1870, and accompanied Archbishop Alessandro Franchi
to Constantinople in 1874, the same year in which he was named Secretary for
Oriental Affairs in the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith.
On May 22, 1877, Aloisi Masella was appointed Titular Archbishop of
Neocaesarea in Ponto by Pope Pius IX. After receiving his episcopal
consecration in the following June from Cardinal Franchi, he was later named
Apostolic Nuncio to Bavaria on June 5 of that same year, and Nuncio to
Portugal on September 30, 1879. Pope Leo XIII created him Cardinal Priest of
S. Tommaso in Parione in the consistory of March 14, 1887.
After becoming Prefect of the Sacred Congregation of Indulgences and Relics
on November 16, 1887, Aloisi Masella was made Prefect of the office of
economic planning of the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith
and President of the general administration of the Chamber of Despoilments
on February 13, 1888. He was appointed Prefect of the S.C. of Rites on October
3, 1889, and also served as Camerlengo of the Sacred College of Cardinals on
July 11, 1892 to January 16, 1893. He opted for the titular church of S. Prassede
on January 16, 1893, and was named Pro-Datary of His Holiness on May 29,
1897, remaining in that post until his death. He declined an offering of a
suburbicarian see in order to continue working in the reorganization of the
Apostolic Datary.
The Cardinal died in Rome, at age 76. After being exposed in the Palace of the
Datary and a Requiem in the basilica of Ss. XII Apostoli, his body was buried
in his family's tomb in his native Pontecorvo.

Ingredients
1 cup butter, softened
2 cups granulated sugar
4 eggs
3-1/4 cups flour
4 tsp grated lime zest
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1 cup buttermilk
1/4 cup lime juice
2 cups frozen blueberries
White Chocolate Lime Glaze
2 cups chopped white chocolate
1/4 cup whipping cream (35%)
1 tbsp grated lime zest
Preparation
In bowl, beat butter with sugar until light
and fluffy; beat in eggs one at a time.
Whisk together flour, lime zest, baking
powder and salt; stir into mixture
alternately with buttermilk, making 3
additions of flour mixture and 2 of
buttermilk. Stir in the lime juice.
Divide 1/3 of the batter between 2
greased 8x4 inch (1.5L) loaf pans.
Divide 1 cup of the blueberries over top.
Repeat layers once. Spread remaining
batter over top.
Bake in 350º (180ºC) oven until cake
tester inserted in centre comes out clean,
about 55 minutes. Let cool in pan on
rack for 10 minutes. Transfer to racks set
over baking sheets or waxed paper.
White Chocolate Lime Glaze:
In heatproof bowl over saucepan of hot
(not boiling) water, melt white chocolate
with cream, stirring occasionally, until
smooth. Stir in lime zest. Pour over warm
loaves; let cool. (Make-ahead: Wrap in
plastic wrap and store for up to 2 days or
overwrap in foil and freeze for up to 1
month)
