Paese storico della Ciociaria:
Il paese di San Giovanni Incarico ha origini molto antiche con
tracce risalenti al periodo romano. Sono ancora oggi visibili
statue, epigrafi e colonne di quell’epoca. Se da una parte è
certa l’antica denominazione, vale a dire Fabrateria Nova, il
suo nome attuale è riconducibile a diverse teorie: una di ordine
storico lo vuole derivato dal nome del suo santo patrono, nato
in Palestina nella citta di Incarin, un’altra, di ordine geografico,
da “Valle in Carica”, luogo in cui sorge, tra il colle San
Maurizio ed il monte Cervaro. Come la gran parte dei paesi
ciociari, San Giovanni ha subito un lungo periodo di invasioni
barbariche, distruzioni, occupazioni delle truppe papali prima
e di potenti famiglie poi. Interessante la chiesa patronale di
San Giovanni, notevole soprattutto per la lastra di marmo
bianco inserita in un muro esterno adiacente alla sua facciata,
recante un’antica epigrafe. Oggi il paese è un attivo centro
agricolo ed industriale che deve parte della propria notorietà
al suo lago, che oltre a rappresentare una piacevole meta per
una gita fuori porta, è anche molto frequentato da pescatori
per l’abbondanza di pesci.
The origins of the village of San Giovanni Incarico are very
old and date back to the Roman era. Important remains of that
period such as statues, epigraphs and columns are visible still
today. Its ancient name was Fabrateria Nova; two theories
explain the meaning of its current name. According to the
historical one the name comes from the Patron Saint born in

Palestine in the town of Incarin. While the geographybased theory holds that it comes from “In Carica Valley”,
the area between San Maurizio Hill and Cervaro Mount,
where the town lies. As many villages of this province,
San Giovanni Incarico suffered barbaric invasions,
destructions, occupations by papal troops and powerful
families. The church of San Giovanni is very interesting.
It is especially remarkable for its white marble slab
bearing an ancient epigraph on the outer wall next to the
façade. Nowadays the village is a lively agricultural and
industrial centre that also attracts a lot of people for its
lake. This lake is not only a valid stimulus for a trip but
also the favourite destination for a lot of fishers because
of its abundance of fish.

S. ONORIO FESTIVAL
For the first time the Sant’Onorio mass was not held at the Club.
Father Daniel welcomed the faithful devoted to his beautiful St.
Charbel Church. Deacon Rocco Maiuri concelebrated the mass with
him. The statue was carried in procession with the Voci Ciociare
following singing a hymn of praise to the saint. Danielle Marentette
led us in song at the Mass with her wonderful voice. Everyone
returned to the Club where the Statue was brought into the Chapel
in procession with singing and prayer.
The festivities continued all day under the pavilion, on the bocci
courts, around the Club with great food, games for the children,
entertainment and dancing.
Thank you to the organizing committee for their continued
commitment to this festival and for the successful outcome each year.

Knights of Columbus, the crowd and S.Onorio in procession
Per la prima volta la santa messa per S. Onorio non si e’ tenuta presso
il Club. Padre Daniel ha accolto con favore i fedeli devoti alla sua
bella Chiesa San Charbel. Il Diacono Rocco Maiuri ha celebrato la
messa con lui. La statua veniva portata in processione con le Voci
Cioicare seguenti cantando un inno di lode al santo. Danielle
Marentette ci ha portato nel canto durante la Santa Messa con la sua
splendida voce. Tutti hanno fatto ritorno al Club, in cui la statua
venne portata nella cappella in processione con il canto e la
preghiera.
La festa ha continuato tutto il giorno sotto il padiglione con gioco di
bocce intorno al club, con ottimo cibo, giochi per bambini,
intrattenimento e ballo.
Grazie al comitato organizzatore per il loro costante impegno a
questo festival e per il buon esito ogni anno!

With almost 20 busses from Sarnia, Toronto, Boston, Chicago and Ohio
and cars from Michigan and New York, not to mention our neighbours
from Amherstburg, Leamington and surrounding area as well as the
local communities of Windsor, LaSalle and Tecumseh, the Ciociaro Club
was filled with nearly 2000 devoted pilgrim people ready to celebrate
the Mass in honour of their Blessed Mother “Maria Santissima di
Canneto”!
Father Adriano Barbiero, of St. Angela Merici parish in Windsor, Father
Giuseppe Licciardi of Michigan, as well as Deacon Rocco Maiuri,
celebrated Mass together. With St. Angela church choir leading the
hymns, it was a beautiful celebration.
Afterwards, the Madonna was carried in procession around the bicycle
track and back into the Chapel until the time of the evening twilight
Mass. We had over 20 standard bearers proudly carrying their banners
behind the Madonna, as well as the Leamington band, the Voci Ciociare
and the polizia stradale who flanked the Madonna. The faithful people
followed devotedly.
Festivities continued throughout the day with entertainment by singing
groups, organetti players and a band. There were soccer and bocce
tournaments going on, as well as fun things for the kids. We even had
a new membership sign-up booth which was quite successful!

The sunset evening Mass was lovely with many people attending. After
the procession around the Chapel, the Madonna was placed facing the
spectacular firework display which concluded the day with a bang!
Special thanks to the organizing committee for a smoothly run day!!!
All your hard work and dedication culminated a very successful festival!

Con quasi 20 autobus da Sarnia, Toronto, Boston, Chicago ed Ohio e
auto partire da Michigan e New York, per non parlare dei vicini da
Amherstburg, Leamington e le aree circonstanti, nonche’ le comunita’
locali di Windsor, LaSalle e Tecumseh, il Ciociaro Club e’ stato riempito
con quasi 2000 devoti pellegrini pronti a celebrare la santa messa in
onore della Beata Madre Santissima di Canneto.

Padre Adriano Barbiero della chiesa S. Angela Merici parrocchiale di
Windsor, Padre Giuseppe Licciardi di Michigan , nonche’ Diacono
Rocco Maiuri hanno celebrato la santa messa insieme. Con il coro della
chiesa S. Angela leader dei canti,e’ stata una bella celebrazione!
In seguito, la Madonna era portato in processione per la pista e poi di
nuovo nella cappella. Abbiamo avuto oltre 20 alfieri recando con
orgoglio i loro stendardo dietro la Madonna, come pure la banda di
Leamington, le Voci Ciociare e la polizia stradale che ha affiancato la
Madonna. Il popolo fedele seguiva con devozione.
La festa ha continuato per tutto il giorno con intrattenimento con canto,
organetti e una banda. Ci sono stati tornei di calcio e bocce, nonche’
cose di divertimento per bambini. Abbiamo anche avuto una “Nuova
iscrizione” per i soci del Club che e’ stato un buon successo!
La messa della sera e’ stata bella con il tramonto e molte persone che
hanno partecipato. Dopo la processione intorno alla Cappella, la
Madonna fu posto di fronte alle spettacolari fuochi d’artificio che hanno
concluso la giornata con un bang!
Uno speciale ringraziamento al comitato organizzatore per un ben
gestito! Tutto il duro lavoro e dedicazione hanno culminato un festival
di molto successo!!

HONOUR GUARD
Thank you to Giuseppina Tiberia for coordinating the
Honour Guard at Members’ funerals. It is a special
tribute shown to deceased members by representatives
of the Ciociaro Club.
When one of our members passes, representatives will
visit the funeral home and form an Honour Guard as
a sign of respect. If you wish to have an Honour
Guard for your deceased loved one, please notify the
Club at 519-737- 6153.
Giuseppina needs at least 6 more people for the
Honour Guard as back-up. If you would like to add

As one can see, our Club is blooming with the most beautiful coloured
flowers and green plants. Our wonderful volunteers have finished
landscaping around the Club with marvelous plants donated once again, by
the Capogna family. We would like to thank Tony Capogna and his son
Andrew of Capogna Flowers of Ruthven, for their generosity in donating all
the flowers and plants including the 2 large planters which flank the side
entrance of the Club. Your kind gesture is most appreciated, especially for
the dedication and pride demonstrated toward your Club!

60 of Ciociaro's elite soccer players
through drills and training at the
Ciociaro Soccer Club Training Camp.
Players enjoyed sunny skies, and
great conditions as they trained with
different techniques and styles to
better their skills for the 2014 season.
Players also enjoyed lunch at the club
every day.

Giovanni Tommaso Cimello
Giovanni Tommaso (o Giovanthomaso) Cimello (Monte San Giovanni, 1510
circa - Monte San Giovanni, 1591) è stato un poeta e musicista italiano.
Nacque da famiglia agiata, che risiedeva nel quartiere della Scrima. Uomo di
lettere, fu versato non solo nella musica ma anche nella poesia e già da giovane
dovette distinguersi nella locale comunità, visto che in un documento afferma
di ricoprire il ruolo di revisore amministrativo.
Attorno al 1540 fu a Napoli, dove si mise in luce per le doti didattiche. Malgrado
Napoli fosse diventata ormai vicereame spagnolo dagli inizi del XVI secolo, la
scuola musicale instaurata sotto il dominio degli Aragonesi e legata al nome del
maestro fiammingo Johannes Tinctoris non si era dissolta. Sulla sua scia e su
quella di Franchino Gaffurio si svolgerà l’attività didattica per cui Cimello
diventerà piuttosto noto. Oltre a comporre madrigali, fu anche uno dei primi
autori di villanelle napoletane e in alcuni casi ne compose anche i versi.
Al periodo napoletano appartengono opere quali le due raccolte musicali
pubblicate nel 1545 e l’opera teorica Della perfettione delle 4 note maggiori
massima, Zonga, breve, semibreve, in cui non si limita ad esporre le regole e il
nuovo tipo di notazione che stava entrando in uso, ma ne illustra l’applicazione
pratica.
Una successiva raccolta di stampe musicali fu pubblicata nel 1548, sempre a
Venezia come le precedenti.
Già entrato nelle grazie della famiglia Colonna (dedicò anche diversi
componimenti a Marcantonio Colonna ed altri esponenti della famiglia), si
spostò a Roma presso il ramo romano. Qui esercitò l’attività di compositore e
fu cantore della Cappella Giulia, poi maestro di cappella. Del periodo romano
sono noti i suoi screzi con Annibale Zoilo, anche lui al servizio del cardinale
Guglielmo Sirleto, che badò a riappacificarli. Dal 1570 fu anche cantore nella
Cappella Sistina.
Le vicende dei suoi ultimi anni ci sono note attraverso una lettera scritta al
cardinale dal suo paese natale, datata 13 dicembre 1579. Alcuni passaggi sono
stati interpretati come la conferma che ad un certo punto il Cimello avesse preso
gli ordini minori. Vi afferma inoltre che nel 1571 lasciò Roma per Benevento e
poi Sora e che avrebbe dovuto partecipare, col Palestrina e altri, alla riedizione
del graduale a seguito della riforma del Concilio di Trento.
Dato che è l’ultimo documento di sua mano, che non viene menzionato altrove
come vivente in anni successivi e che il testamento è datato 1591, si ritiene morì
in quell’anno nel paese di Monte San Giovanni. Fu sepolto nella locale chiesa
di Santa Giusta.

Ricotta and lemon eggplant

Ingredients
2 medium eggplants
3 tbsp olive oil
1 small onions finely chopped
1 garlic clove. minced
1 tsp salt
475 g tub ricotta
1/2 cup grated parmesan
1 tbsp lemon zest
1/2 cup chopped fresh basil
796 mL can diced tomatoes
Instructions
1. PREHEAT oven to 400ºF. Une a large
rimmed baking sheet with foil. Spray with
oil. Set aside.
2. SLICE eggplants lengthwise into 1/4-in.thick slices. There will be about 16 slices.
Discard outside slices or keep for another
use. Lightly brush both sides of eggplant
slices with about 2 tbsp olive oil. Lay on
prepared baking sheet and bake in centre of
oven until edges are fork-tender. about 15
min. Set aside to cool.
3. HEAT a large non-stick frying pan over
medium. Add 1 tsp oil. then onion. garlic
and 1/2 tsp salt Cook until onion is soft. 3
min. Stir in ricotta. parmesan. lemon zest
and 1/4 cup basil. Stir until heated through.
about 2 min. Season with fresh pepper.
Transfer mixture into a medium bowl. Set
aside.
4. RETURN pan to heat and increase to
medium-high. Add remaining oil, tomatoes
and remaining salt. Bring to a boil, then
reduce heat to medium. Simmer, uncovered,
stirring occasionally until saucy, about 20
min. Remove from heat and stir in
remaining basil. Season with fresh pepper.
Keep warm.
5. SPOON 2 tbsp ricotta mixture onto 1 end
of each eggplant slice. Gently roll up. Place
involtini on a large warmed serving platter.

of tomato sauce. Serve immediately with
remaining tomato sauce alongside.
