Sindaco McNamara & Tony Haddad, CAO); Hiram Walker (grazie Mr. Dan Tullio, Marketing Manager and Member of the Club); Mucci Farms (grazie Signora e Signor Gino Mucci); Sun Brite Canning (grazie Sig. The weather has finally improved and I am sure that you are all anxious to attend one of the several outdoor events that are planned throughout the summer. During this time the the Board of Directors of the Club have been extremely busy working to ensure that the Management has everything they need to ensure that our Club remains one of the most impressive associations in Canada. For example, we have several major projects on the go. Most importantly our total kitchen renovation is well underway. Our initial expansion is complete, the new employee staff room, storage and receiving areas, and our brand new freezers and coolers have been constructed and installed. The current phase is starting which will see the installation of new dishwashing equipment, followed by the construction of a “state of the art” temperature controlled food preparation area. The total project is slated to be complete in the first part of 2011. In addition, we are performing significant renovations to our Pavilion. All new stucco walls are being constructed and new retractable tarps are being installed. This will give the pavilion a new and modern look. Also, this will allow the General Manager to rent our picnic facilities more often and it will ensure that the members have the best facilities when they are hosting their events. In April we celebrated our 38th Annual Members’ Banquet where we honoured Vicalvi as the “Town of the Year”. It was truly a pleasure to get to know Mayor Leonardo D’Agostini and his delegation that made the trip to the Club to receive the recognition in person. As you will see in the upcoming pages of this issue of Corriere Ciociaro the delegation was able to meet and learn about the Ciociaro Community of Windsor and Essex County. I am sure that they remained impressed with the sincere joy in which we hosted them, and the success that the Ciociaro Community has achieved abroad. In addition, we hosted a small delegation from the City of Frosinone who were here to work with the City of Tecumseh on their respective twinning initiative. We continue to pour a tremendous amount of work to support this relationship and some very exciting developments are occurring that relate to educational, cultural, and economic development opportunities which will positively impact the Ciociaro Club in the near future. Stay tuned for more information! Make sure you take the time to peruse this issue of the Corriere Ciociaro. It will give you a great understanding of the projects that we are working on and the events that are upcoming. I encourage you to get involved, and to engage your children and grandchildren to learn about and appreciate our beautiful and unique Club. Ultimately, we are working to preserve and promote our rich cultural heritage so that it may be enjoyed by our next generation! The grey stone buildings of Ausonia, rising from the midst of mountains belonging to the Aurunci chain, are surrounded by attractive terraces of olive groves and orchards. When known by its ancient name Castrum Fractae, it formed part of the monastic possessions of Montecassino. Only in 1862, after the unification of Italy did it take the name Ausonia. The town has many interesting monumental structures. The Collegiata of S. Michele Arcangelo, a church of Romanesque origin, includes three Gothic portals. Positioned at its entrance there are two holy water fonts made out of Roman votive altars. The town’s castle, donated to Montecassino in 1065 by the Princes of Capua, is both a military and residential complex. S.Maria a Castello, a stone built church, features an elegant belfry. The Sanctuary of S. Maria del Piano, noted for its polyptych by G.B.Criscuolo, has 11th century frescoes in its crypt, which illustrate the event of St. Remicarda’s miracle. But the most interesting sights of all are the cloisters, stepways, pathways and quaint small squares enclosed by fine 18th century palaces with charming mullioned windows embellished by Catalan frames. In all, the town transmits a quiet and sedate austerity. Auguri!!! 38th Annual Members Banquet The 38th Annual Members Banquet was a great success. We proudly conferred the title of “Town of the Year” to Vicalvi presented to Mayor - Dr. Leonardo D’Agostini – and his impressive delegation. During their stay they were able to learn about the Ciociaro Club, and the Ciociari of Windsor and Essex County. In addition they participated in several tours such as the official reception at Tecumseh Town Hall (thank you to Mayor McNamara & Tony Haddad Town CAO), Hiram Walker (thank you Mr. Dan Tullio; Marketing Manager & Member of the Club), Mucci Farms (thank you to Mr. & Mrs. Gino Mucci), and Sun-Brite Canning (thank you to Mr. Onorio Iacobelli & family – members of the Club and native of Vicalvi, Frosinone), Toronto and the world famous Niagara Falls. The large crowd in attendance (over 1,200 people) watched as we proudly conferred the title of Honourary Member to Tecumseh Mayor Mr. Gary McNamara for “outstanding service and meritorious dedication to the Club”. In addition, the Ciociaro Club bursary program presented six $1,000 bursaries to young ciociari in our community. Congratulations on your successful academic record and good luck in your future endeavours. Also, we recognized three entrepreneurs of Ciociaro descent (and their families) for recognition they have received in the community for their successful businesses. They are Mario Valente and family (Valente Construction), Mario Collavino & family (PCR Construction), and Dario Silvaggi (Mind Box Creative Group). Lastly, several of our members were honoured with their 25 year pins for having successfully completed 25 years of consecutive membership ... Congratulations !!! North Talbot Road nicknamed “VIA FROSINONE” During our 38th Annual Members banquet celebration which was held on Sunday April 25, 2010 Tecumseh Mayor Gary McNamara surprised those in attendance by presenting the Club with an honourary street sign for Via Frosinone (the new nickname for North Talbot Rd). He explained this was being done in recognition and gratitude for the role that the Ciociaro Club played in the very successful twining between his municipality and the City of Frosinone (Italy). Permanent street signs have already be erected at each intersection of North Talbot begining at Walker Rd and ending at the 8th Concession (See photograph above provided by Armando Carlini). Earlier on in the evening, during a toast to Italy Mr. McNarama echoed the statement which he has made on several occasions; he stated: “A Toast to Italy – thank you for having sent us your sons and daughters…..in particular those from the province of Frosinone who have significantly contributed to the building of a modern and prosperous Town of Tecumseh, Essex County, and Canada”. CORRIERE CIOCIARO Promoting and Preserving the Italian Culture TEPPISTI DEI SOGNI & THE AARON CARUSO BAND During the last few months the Club assisted in organizing two different concerts geared at promoting and preserving our rich Italian Heritage. On April 18 we hosted, direct from Sicily Italy, the Teppesti dei Sogni. They are most famous for their 70’s mega-hit “Piccolo Fiore”. Similarly, on May 21 we hosted the great Aarron Caruso Band. The young tenor from Detroit Michigan put on a wonderful performance as evidenced by the several standing ovations he received from the crowd in attendance. Originally diagnosed in December 2007, he had an above the knee amputation in March 2009 and still continues to undergo treatment to fight this terrible disease. He is an avid soccer fan and began playing soccer when he was 5 years old and continued to play until he was diagnosed with cancer. Some of the boys at our club have played alongside Jonah in Michigan. We thank everyone who participated and wish Jonah the very best. The Ciociaro teams are in full swing now, so stop by and watch some of our kids play. Games at the club are held weeknights and Saturday mornings. PAGE 7 Sports / Lo sport CYCLING AT THE CIOCIARO CLUB By Alan Henderson Every youngster knows – or should know – how to ride a bike safely! Thanks to dedicated Ciociaro Cycling Club volunteers, youngsters now can improve cycling skills and experience the thrill of competition on the club track at no charge. Charlotte Loaring, CCC executive member, said, judging from the first two sessions, the training, geared for youngsters five to 16 years of age, is fun and appreciated. “All we ask is that children bring a bike in good condition, a helmet and a smile,” she said. Charlotte and her team of experienced riders - Pietro DiPonio, Tom Bonin, Jason Lamb, Alex Rae, Sandra Burks and Les Pruden do the rest. “Youth cycling development has been one of the primary focuses of the CCC.” Charlotte said. “This program aims to get more kids on bikes, safely. The hope is that they will carry these newly developed skills and healthy attitudes throughout their lives, whether choosing to race, or simply remaining recreational and meeting like-minded healthy peers.” Charlotte said she and her team were delighted when 13 children showed up with their parents on the inaugural night April 22. There were even more two weeks later. With groups based on ages and skills, the children work on cornering, climbing, descending, starting, stopping, bike maintenance and respect for others on the road. They also learn to ride safely in groups in single lines and side-by-side. Each session ends with a race-simulation where children pedal against the clock so they can record progress each week. Not surprisingly, it has been the first time many of the children, including three five-year-olds, have ever climbed a hill. Some of the older youngsters already are entering youth events during Thursday night racing. Sessions are on non-race Thursdays until the end of August. Dates are May 20, June 3 and 17, July 1, 15 and 29, Aug 12 and 26. Registration starts at 5:30 p.m. and the sessions start promptly at 5:45 p.m. For more information, call Charlotte at 519-257-3762. Better still, come out and cheer the youngsters on. Then join them at 6:30 p.m. to watch and learn from adult cyclists who start their training on the track at that time. CORRIERE CIOCIARO BOCCIOFILA NEWS On February 27th we had our annual banquet. It was a great success and a good time was had by all that attended. The Ciociaro kitchen staff provided an excellent meal and thank you to the service staff, sponsors and all the members of the Bocciofila that provided the raffle prizes. In March, members of the bocciofila attended a tournament in Cape Coral, Florida. The men who entered the tournament were Rocco Lecce, Giorgio Paniccia, Danny DiMario, Americo Rizza and Enrico Perciballi along with our friend Benito Germani who lives in Florida. It was a great experience and we've made new friendships and played bocce for a week. We're looking forward to returning next year. We have had several men and women’s tournaments, with about 30 members participating. Congratulations to all the winners! On May 24 the official gara at Caboto Park was won by our Ciociaro Men’s team of Rocco Lecce and Giorgio Paniccia. Congratulations and keep up the good play!!!! June 11th is our annual Bar-b-que and we are expecting a good turn-out. Please get your tickets from any bocciofila member and support our group. Thanks again to our sponsors, Ciociaro club management and staff for all you do for us. Also special thanks to our members that provide baked goods, door prizes and spend time taking care of the alleys. It is much appreciated. We are looking forward to a successful and enjoyable season. Good luck to everyone and have fun. Anyone interested in joining our group call Ciociaro Club or Anna Lecce 735-1430 or Joe Viselli 254-4818. PAGE 8 Community News University of Cassino & University of Windsor Sign a Historic Agreement of Co-operation L’Universita’ di Cassino e l’Universita’ di Windsor Firmano un Accordo Storico per la Cooperazione We are pleased to report that these two prestigious universities have signed a historic co-operation agreement which will see them work together going forward. This initiative was born out of the successful twining between the City of Frosinone & the Town of Tecumseh. While in Italy in September 2009 President Frank Maceroni and Guy Diponio (Representing the Windsor Essex Economic Development Corporation and also a member of the Ciociaro Club) made a trip to the Campus of the University of Cassino to explain our interest in this potential co-operation. Prior to their trip the University of Windsor had already expressed an interest through Dr. Antonio Rossini, and Dr. Bruce Tucker VP. International Education. This agreement is unique because it will allow students to take classes at both universities - in any faculty. It is also unique because the university will use Cassino as its base for all students interested in Central or Southern Italy (they already have an accord with University of Udine for Northern Italy). This obviously is a great advantage to those of Ciociaro background because the University of Cassino is located in the Province of Frosinone literally minutes away from the home town of most of our membership. Dr. Rossini of the University of Windsor stated:“Our newly re-established Italian Degree is unique in Canada in that it requires each of our students to study in Italy for one complete year. This new partnership with the University of Cassino will allow our students from Windsor – many of whom are of Ciociaro descent - to frequent a prestigious university in Central Italy and also learn about the beautiful culture of the Ciociaria” Guy Diponio acknowledged that: “The other important factor in this agreement is that it pertains to every faculty. For example if a student is studying engineering, or architecture, they will be able to take advantage of a major Fiat Automotive Hub located in Cassino, and the historic architecture located throughout the Ciociaria and surrounding areas ...it is truly a remarkable opportunity”. President Frank Maceroni “ This is an extremely important initiative in that our children will have another opportunity to learn about our culture. Equally , as important we have successfully positioned the University of Cassino to receive students from various backgrounds (Italian and non Italian) thereby giving others an opportunity to learn about our region. Lastly, we also expect an increase of Italian students studying in Windsor which will provide cultural and economic benefits to Windsor and Essex County. For more information please contact the Ciociaro Club, c/o Frank Maceroni/Anna Vitti @ (519) 737-6153. GREGORIO IX Born in Anagni, between 1145 and 1150 a.C., he was Pope Gregorio IX (1227-1241). He was often believed to be the founder of The Inquisition, in 1232. He was nominated Cardinal in 1198 and was given the charge of the new Franciscan Order, making sure it adhered to the traditions and the purposes of the Church. He became pope March 19, 1227, at the age of 80 and one the first actions of his papacy was the suspension of Frederick II, excommunicating him twice in the city of Anagni. After a subsequent successful invasion of St. Peter by Frederick in 1228, Gregorio was forced to strike a peace accord, but the general population of Rome was not happy, revolted, and the pope was kicked out of the Capital in June 1232, finding refuge in Anagni and forced by the circumstances to get help from Frederick. A new break of hostilities between the two men, generated a new excommunication of Frederick by the pope in 1239 and a new long war, which it only ended with the death of the pope, August 22, 1241. In 1232 Gregorio instituted the Tribunals of The Inquisition, originally entrusted to the Dominican Brothers. These tribunals were very powerful in their own jurisdictions. Compared to Cicero by means of his eloquence, the pope was also a very able and well educated lawyer. He was also responsible for the canonization of Saint Elisabetta, Saint Domenico di Guzman, Saint Antonio of Padua and of Saint Francesco of Assisi (July 16, 1228), of which he has been a very good friend and set the first stone in the construction of the church of Saint Francesco in Assisi. In the Laterano district the pope established a hospital for the poor infirm. In 1239 he was able to unite the Armenians to the Latin Church. He was somewhat successful to influence his authority in the English Church, but similar attempts to do the same with the National French Church, were thwarted, causing only the pragmatic sanctions of Saint Luigi.
