Miss Italia Nel Mondo
For the first time ever in Windsor, the Ciociaro Club proudly hosted the Miss Italia
Nel Mondo Finals. The contestants came from all over - as far as Vancouver. The
event took place May 4, 2008 and there were nineteen contestants. The night
commenced with a fabulous dinner and continued with wonderful entertainment.
With us that evening was Simona Rodano who is known for her role in "The Sound
Of Music" and also "Pinocchio".
We would like to congratulate STEFANIE MASOTTI who was crowned Miss Italia
Nel Mondo and will go on to Venice, Italy to participate in the WJorld competition.
We would also like to thank the committee for doing such a great job in organizing
this successful event.

Miss Italia Nel Mondo
Per la prima volta a Windsor, il Ciociaro Club di Windsor ha avuto l’onore di ospitare
le finali Canadesi di Miss Italia nel Mondo.
Le partecipanti sono arrivate sino da Vancouver, raggiungendo 19 partecipanti.
L’evento ha avuto luogo il 4 Maggio 2008.
La serata ha avuto inizio con una meravigliosa cena ed e’ proseguita con uno
stupendo spettacolo. La serata e’ stata arricchita dalla presenza di Simona Rodano,
conosciuta per le sue esibizioni in “ The sound of the music” e “Pinocchio”.
Congratulazioni a Stefanie Masotti che e’ stata incoronata Miss Italia nel Mondo
Canada e partecipera’ alle finali a Venezia, Italia.
Vorremmo inoltre congratularci con il comitato organizzatore per aver lavorato
duramente per conseguire tale successo.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Cari soci:
Dear Members:
The last few months have been vary busy and eventful. I would
like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the success of two
events that we held at the Club recently. The first ever Miss
Italia Nel Mondo – Canadian Finals was a huge success. The
large crowd in attendance was treated to a spectacular show.
Congratulations to Stephanie Massotti - who will represent
Canada at the Finals in Jesolo (Venice) Italy, all of the
participants, and the organizing committee for a job well done.
Likewise the 36th annual members banquet was well attended
and enjoyed by all. The delegation from Arpino, led by
Assessore Commuale Sig. Enrico Parisi, was touched by the
tributes and warm wishes they received from the Club and its
members. They were equally impressed by the dedication, unity,
and the significant achievements of the Ciociaro community of
Windsor and Essex County.
The upcoming months will also prove to be equally as
entertaining. As we enter the summer period we can look
forward to the nice weather and the extraordinary Festivals that
will take place at our fabulous Club. For example, I look
forward to seeing you at the Family Picnic (June 29), the St.
Onorio Festival (July 13), the Italian Studies fundraising BBQ
(July 18), the Madonna Di Canneto Festival (Aug 17), the
Nostalgie Ciociare Festival (Sept. 28). These events, each of
which will contain new and exciting activities for your family,
will serve to help us promote and maintain our rich cultural
heritage and offer us an opportunity to enjoy each others
company.
I reserve my final thought for our newest members. Its seems
that at each General Assembly meeting we are greeted with
several new smiling faces. It brings us all joy to see that the love
and passion for this Club is vibrant and growing. I welcome
each of you to your new extended family.
I look forward to seeing all of our members at the upcoming
festivals.

Durante questi ultimi mesi siamo stati molto occupati qui al club.
Complimenti a tutti per il grande successo ottenuto a proposito della
festa di Miss Italia Nel Mondo – Finali Canadesi. Auguri speciali da
tutti noi alla vincitrice Stephanie Massotti, la quale si esibira’
nuovamente a Jesolo (Venezia) rappresentando il Canada nelle
Finali Mondiali. Le partecipanti e gli organizzatori offrirono un
meraviglioso spettacolo ai numerosi spettatori presenti.
Ugualmente, il 36.mo banchetto dei soci e’ stato di grande successo,
con un gran numero di partecipanti e divertimento per tutti. La
delegazione di Arpino, con a capo l’Assessore Enrico Parisi, e’
rimasta piu’ che impressa dal caloroso accoglimento dalle autorita’
varie del Club e da tutti i nostri soci. Quello che l’ha piu’
meravigliato e’ stato il comportamento dei soci, il loro senso di
unita’ e tutti i successi che sono stati ottenuti dalla comunita’
Ciociara in tutta questa nostra regione.
Avvicinandoci sempre di piu’ all’inizio dell’estate, sempre con la
speranza di avere bel tempo, avremo molto da festeggiare al nostro
favoloso “Ciocaro”. Io saro’ personalmente felice di vedervi tutti al
“Family Picnic” (29 giugno), alla Festa di Sant’Onorio (13 luglio),
alla raccolta fondi “Studi d’Italiano” BBQ (18 luglio), la Festa Della
Madonna di Canneto (17 agosto), la festa delle “Nostalgie Ciociare”
(28 Settembre). Insomma, non manchera’ mai da divertirci. I
sopraindicati avvenimenti avranno delle nuove sorprese, daranno a
noi l’opportunita’ di rivederci spesso, avendo cosi’, come sempre,
l’occasione di mantenere e festeggiare la nostra dinamica cultura.
Un mio pensiero finale va ai nuovi soci. Ogni volta che l’Assemblea
Generale si riunisce, abbiamo l’onore di vedere nuovi visi sorridenti.
Ci fa molto piacere notare che l’attaccamento al nostro club e’ forte,
vibrante e sempre in numero di aumento. Un sincero benvenuto va
a tutti coloro, i quali, sono recentemente entrati a far parte di questa
nostra grande, meravigliosa famiglia!
Spero di rivedere tutti, soci e famiglie, alle varie feste dei prossimi
mesi.

Paese storico della Ciociaria: SANT’ANDREA
Situato nella zona più meridionale della provincia di
Frosinone, il paese di Sant’Andrea dei Garigliano nacque
allorquando i monaci dell’abbazia di Montecassino,
ricevute queste terre in dono dal duca Gisolfo di
Benevento, inviarono qui i coloni per la lavorazione delle
campagne. In origine denominato “Villa”, il borgo
sorgeva sulla riva destra dei Garigliano, ma a causa delle
continue incursioni saracene, si sviluppò più a monte, in
luogo più protetto. Rinvenimenti archeologici, però,
testimoniano che il luogo era già abitato in età molto più
remota, come si evince dalla “pietra scritta” (inscrizione
su pietra dedicata alla moglie di un guerriero caduto in
battaglia), ancora visibile in località Guardia.
Danneggiato a più riprese dai saraceni e dai normanni, il
paese fu dato alle fiamme dalle orde di Marcoaldo,
costringendo la popolazione a rifugiarsi nella vicina
Abbazia. Sant’Andrea dei Garigliano, che solo nel 1907
ha assunto l’attuale completa denominazione, è nota
soprattutto per le vicende legate all’ultimo conflitto
bellico. Qui sostò per mesi la linea Gustav ed il paese fu
interamente raso al suolo. Oggi è un laborioso centro
agricolo, ricco di sorgenti d’acqua sulfuree, che sa offrire
al visitatore tanta ospitalità.
Situated at the southernmost edge of the province of
Frosinone, the town of Sant’Andrea del Garigliano came
into being when the monks of the Montecassino Abbey,
received this land as a donation from Duke Gisolfo of
Benevento. Farmers were then invited here to cultivate
the area. Originally called “Villa”, the village rose on the left bank of
the Gatigliano river, but because of the continuing Saracen
incursions, it was redeveloped further up-hill to take advantage of a
naturally protected area. Archaeological findings, however, indicate
that this area was inhabited much earlier, as proved by the “pietra
scritta” (a stone inscription dedicated to the wife of a fallen warrior)
still legible and found in the locality of Guardia. Repeatedly
destroyed by Saracens and Normans, the town was razed by fire on
the orders of Marcoaldo, compelling the population to seek refuge in
the nearby Abbey. Sant’Andrea del Garigliano, which only in 1907
did take its current name, is renowned above all for the events of the
Second World War. Here, the “Gustav line” held for many months
resulting in the town’s complete destruction. Today it is a busy
agricultural centre, rich with natural springs and sulphurous waters,
offering visitors open hospitality typical of the Ciociaria.

Invitiamo tutti i membri del Club con le loro moglie, o compagna/o e
i loro figli, a venire a gustare gratuitamente pasta, hamburgers, hot
dogs e patatine dalle ore 12:00 alle 6:00pm. Ci sara' anche
divertimento per i bambini. Le bevante saranno in vendita al bar.

Family Picnic
The third annual Family Picnic
will take place Sunday, June 29,
2008. We invite all members with
their spouses and or significant
others along with their children. The picnic will start at 12:00 noon till
6:00 pm. We will be serving pasta, hamburgers, hot dogs and potato
chips which will all be complimentary. Drinks will be available to be
purchased at the bar. There will also be entertainment for children.
Please come and enjoy the company of your Ciociaro family. To

Student Exchange Opportunity
Bocce
We have been contacted by the Lazio Federation of Ontario regarding
the student exchange trip that is sponsored by the Region of Lazio each
summer. We have been informed that the Ciociaro Club will be awarded
up to four spots for three weeks in Italy (costs for flights and
accommodations to be covered by the Region of Lazio). Interested
applicants must be members of the Ciociaro Club and be full time
students between the ages of 18-29. In order to be considered, interested
individuals must submit a two page essay entitled “The significance of
the Ciociaro Club” to the office no later than June 15, 2008. For more

Opportunita Scambio Di Studenti
La Federazione Laziale Dell’Ontario Ha mandato un comunicato
riguardante lo scambio di studenti quest’estate patrocinato dalla
Regione Del Lazio. Siamo stati informati che il nostro Ciociaro Club
avra’ il posto per quattro studenti per un viaggio in Italia per tre
settimane. Il costo del viaggio aereo e alloggio verra’ pagato dalla
regione Lazio. Gli studenti interessati devono essere membri del Club di
eta’ tra 18 anni e 29 anni, e devono frequentare la scula regolarmente per
tutto I’anno scolastico. Per essere considerato, lo studente deve
consegnare all’ufficio del Ciociaro Club un saggio col titolo “Il
significato Del Ciociaro Club”. Non piu tardi del 15 giugno 2008. Per

A new Italian night class for beginners will take
place at the ciociaro club towards the middle of
June 2008. The class will run for 10 weeks, one
night per week - two hours long. All interested

A Cepranese priest will be with us, and has
expressed a strong desire to see our Club and
meet many of its members.
The priest is Giuseppe Polselli, normally
called "Padre Giuseppe". He is the nephew of
Giovanni De Santis (father of Angela
Vettese).
Padre Giuseppe is currently stationed near
Benevento, Italy. He was stationed in
Ceccano for many years, and other regions,
including Brazil.
At 7:30 p.m., he will participate in the
prayers at the Madonna Di Canneto Chapel.
At 8:30 p.m., he will be in a club's small hall,
hoping to see and talk to many club members.
We invite all club members to come and
meet Padre Giuseppe, on Friday June 13 at
7:30 p.m. Coffee and pastry will be served
free of charge.

Italian Heritage and
Language Program
Dear Members of the Ciociaro Club,
Our Italian Heritage and Language Program is and has been the largest
Italian language and cultural program in the Windsor-Essex area for the
last 7 years. With over 120 elementary students (5-13 yrs old) registered
this year, the program was held on Saturday mornings between 10:00 am
and 12:00 pm from October to May of the regular calender school year
and has been recognized as an ‘Exemplary Program’ by representatives
of the W.E.C.D.S.B. The curriculum of the program offers the students
opportunity to explore, understand and learn their heritage, culture and
language in a very interactive environment. Each and every student is
encouraged to reach his/her potential physically, emotionally,
academically and spiritually. We strive to create a love of learning, a
strong pride in our heritage and a sound Christian foundation that will
empower all students to make lifelong complex decisions. We encourage
all of our students to take part in the many workshops (such as the pizza
making) along with traditional Italian celebrations such as Christmas and
Easter assemblies. Many thanks go to the Windsor-Essex Catholic
District School Board’s International Language Program and the
Ciociaro Club of Windsor for generously providing the classroom space.
This year has been very productive. A class contest for designing our
official logo was held and the winning class’ logo was printed on T-shirts
which are available to everyone. We have had a very successful first-ever
‘Italian Book Fair’. We hope to see more publishers, organizations and/or
groups participate in future Italian Book Fairs so that we may provide a
larger variety of Italian (books, audio/video and other materials) available
for purchasing by the students, their families and the general public. Our
1st Annual Family B-B-Q was enjoyed by everyone thanks to the great
weather. A wonderful ‘Special Blessing’ for all the students and everyone
in attendance was held in the Chapel on our last day as well as our student’s
year-end concert. The photos below are from our Pizza Making Workshops
this year which were held on April 26 and May 3.
We encourage all members and their families to continue to support
and participate in all the events that this program offers each year. After
all, we must continue to involve and teach the younger generations so
that we may continue to preserve what we have enjoyed and continue to
enjoy from our past generations.

Italian Studies - Steak BBQ Fundraiser

This event is being co-organized by the 5 Italian Clubs (Ciociaro, Fogolar,
Caboto, Roma, Verdi). 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the
Italian Studies Legacy Fund at the University of Windsor. The 5 Clubs
have set a combined fund-raising goal of $200, 000 toward this effort which is to be raised jointly over a period of 10 years. The contribution of
these funds will help ensure that 2 “permanent” full time Italian Language
professors will be maintained by the University of Windsor. This will ensure
the continued instruction of the Italian language, and allow for the possibility
of students graduating with a degree in Italian. This BBQ is a first in a series
of events which will be held at all 5 Clubs. Please come out and support this
worthwhile cause. Tickets can be purchased at the Ciociaro Club.

AMEDEO MAIURI
NATO A: Veroli, il 7 gennaio 1886
CHI ERA: archeologo italiano definito uno tra i
maggiori archeologi del nostro secolo.
VITA: studente modello, dopo gli studi
all’Università La Sapienza di Roma frequenta la
Scuola archeologica di Roma e d’Atene e a soli 28
anni fu incaricato di dirigere la missione
archeologica italiana nel Dodecaneso, tra Creta e
Rodi. Fu questa importante missione nell’Egeo,
che gli valse la carica di direttore del museo
archeologico di Rodi e, nel 1916, la carica di
sovrintendente ai monumenti e scavi del
Dodecaneso, dove rimase per dieci lunghi anni,
fino al 1924. Rientrato in Italia, all’età di 38 anni, è chiamato a sostituire Vittorio
Spinazzola al vertice del Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli e degli scavi di
Pompei e di Ercolano che, sotto la sua direzione, ricevono un importante impulso di
valorizzazione. In seguito, divenne socio dell’Accademia dei Lincei, fondata nel
1603. Apprezzato studioso, ha pubblicato importanti saggi sull’edilizia e la pittura
pompeiane che gli valsero riconoscimenti negli ambienti della cultura e vari premi
letterari. Infine, due raccolte di scritti, Mestiere d’archeologo, 1990 e Vita
d’archeologo, 1992, introducono alla sua intensa parabola umana e professionale. Si
spense a Napoli, il 7 aprile 1963 all’età di 77 anni. Ultimo aggiornamento (martedì 21

Maiuri was born January 7th 1886 in Veroli, near Frosinone about half way between
Naples and Rome. He earned a degree in archeology at the University of Naples and
then continued his studies at the universities of Rome and Athens. At twenty eight
years old he headed the Italian Archeological team doing important work for the
island of Rhodes. In 1924 he became director of the National Archeological Museaum
in Naples and superintendent of the antiquities of the Campania Region. Some of his
best work is recognized in Pompei and Herculaneum and also the Greek site at
Paestum. Additionally, Maiuri is the author of about 300 publications with respect to
his profession. He died April 7th 1963 at the age of seventy-seven.

POLENTA CON I TANNI
POLENTA WITH “TANNI”
Condimento:
cuocere a crudo i
tanni (particolare
qualità di broccoletti di rapa) in
un tegame con olio, aglio, sale e
pochissima acqua. Se si desidera si può
aggiungere una punta di peperoncino.
Polenta: 1/2 kg di farina gialla per 1 It.
e mezzo di acqua. Mettere a bollire
l’acqua in una patella, salarla e quando
sta per bollire versare a pioggia poco
per volta la farina gialla in modo che
non si formino grumi. Lasciare cuocere
a fuoco ardente, sempre rimestando
con l’apposito bastone. La polenta è
cotta quando si stacca dalle pareti dei
paiolo. Si versa allora nelle piccole
“scife” di legno e si condisce con i
tanni cotti a crudo con un pochino di
olio in piu dei dovuto.
Sauce: Put into a pot the ‘tanni” (a
particular kind of small turnip
broccoli) and cook them “a crudo”
(without browning) with oil, garlic, salt
and very little water. Add a touch of hot
pepper if you like. Polenta: 1 lb 2 oz of
corn meal per 1-1/2 quarts of water
Bring the water to the boil in a copper
pot adding the salt. Sift the meal
avoiding clotting. Boil it on the
maximum heat, always stirring with
the special wooden spoon. The polenta
will be done when it comes off the pot
walls. Now pour the polenta on the
small “scife” (wooden trays) and
season with the “tanni” and more oil
than usual.
Polenta - 1/2 kg. di farina di granturco
(meglio quella a grana grossa), 1-1/2 Il.
di acqua, sale grosso q.b.
Condimento: tanni, olio, aglio, sale,
peperoncino
1 lb 2 oz maize flour (better if coarsegrained), 1-1/2 lt of water, coarse salt
(q.s.), “tanni” vegetable, 2 cloves of
garlic, olive oil, salt, chili pepper
