Where Do We Go From Here?
I am writing this before we vote as a congregation
on constitution and bylaws changes on October 2.
Truth be told, it’s kind of freeing to write this
before knowing the outcome of the vote. I am
confident that God is bigger than any direction we
decide to embark upon.
That said, I do have some observations.
As your pastor, I have listened to those who are
excited about the possibility of change and those
who are concerned about the possibility of
change. I have observed how we speak to each
other in honoring ways as brothers and sisters in
Christ and how we have torn each other down
and spoken to (and about) each other in less than
honorable ways. I have witnessed some of the
best of what we can be as a congregation and
some of the worst. And it grieves me because the
Way of Jesus is better than this. We are better than
this.
Regardless of whether we move forward with
a new constitution and bylaws or the old one, a
critical question for our life together is…
Where do we go from here?
I have some invitations. I invite us to dig deeper as
we move forward…
• Dig deeper into God’s word. Let’s read and
reflect on John, chapter 15 together in the months
head. I have been slowly praying through this
chapter for several months now. Jesus is the vine.
We are the branches. God the Father is the vinedresser.
• Dig deeper into our relationships with each
other. Let’s read and reflect on Matthew, chapter
18, in which Jesus invites us into the way of
reconciliation when we have been wronged by a
brother or sister.
• Dig deeper in prayer, seeking God’s guidance
in all things. Let’s craft time for stillness, listening
for how the Holy Spirit is leading and guiding us.
May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of
God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be
with you always.

The Daughter Project is a local organization that helps young girls who have suffered abuse in the sex
trafficking industry. Started by Toledo resident Jeff Wilbarger, who recently received national recognition from
the Jefferson Awards Foundation, The Daughter Project is hosting a screening of a shocking, inspirational and
award-winning human trafficking documentary called 'Nefarious', at St. Luke’s (Curtice, Ohio) on Tuesday
October 25, 6:30–8 pm.
Based on FBI statistics, Toledo is one of the top five cities in America for human trafficking, according to the
Ohio Trafficking Commission. This 90-minute documentary shows the heart-breaking nature of sex trafficking,
as well as the life saving work being done by several organizations around the world. This documentary will not
only help people to become better informed about this terrible evil, but will inspire them to support The Daughter
Project to provide resources, counseling and recovery at a home located in Wood County. Please be aware that
the content of this movie is for mature audiences, high school age or older. Please consider attending this

In God’s Light: A Message from Bishop Daniel
Dear Friends in Christ,
During this summer, I have been slowly reading through the
Sermon on the Mount, and the 2 verses that I continue to
ponder are Matthew 5:14, "You are the light of the world. A
city built on a hill cannot be hid," and Matthew 5:16, "In the
same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may
see your good works and give glory to your Father in
heaven." The light of Christ shines in you and through you.
My first 5 weeks serving as your bishop have been rich and
full. Moving boxes of books. Getting to know the staff.
Heading to New Orleans for the Churchwide Assembly.
Meeting with synodical committees, pastors, deacons (I like
the sound of that), and congregational leaders. Leading
worship and worshiping with you. Celebrating joys. Navigating
conflict. And running a half marathon.
I thought it would be helpful to share a few updates:
Transition Team: The Synod Council has blessed my request
to form a 7-member Transition Team. The team includes:

Pastor Stacy Laurer-Scovanner (St. John's Lutheran Church in
Sandusky)
Pastor Kent Wilson (Executive Committee of Synod Council
and Zion Lutheran Church in Lima)
Jacob Henry (Organist at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in
Pemberville)
Pastor Jeff Gramza (St. John Lutheran Church in Celina)
Pastor Sarah Schaaf (Conference Dean and St. Paul's Lutheran
Church in Waldo)
Pastor Steve Smithberger (Epiphany Lutheran Church in
Toledo)
This team will meet bi-monthly for 90 days and will offer guidance and leadership in 2 primary areas: 1. A proto-mission and
vision. 2. Staffing Configuration. Please keep the Transition
Team in your prayers as we seek God's will for our synod.
Current Staffing: As many of you know all staff positions at
the Northwestern Ohio Synod are coterminous with the
Bishop's position. Upon the retirement of Bishop Marcus
Lohrmann on July 31, 2016, all of the staff of the Northwestern
Ohio Synod turned in their letters of resignation with an end
date of August 31, 2016. Pastor Cathy Schibler has been called
to serve at Portico as a full-time Regional Representative.
Pastor Marc Miller has been called to serve a congregation in
Puerto Rico. The synod support staff have been very helpful
during this time of transition. Jennifer Prueter, Sherri Wagner,
and Sherry Krieger have been kind enough to continue their
service for an additional 90 days, with 30 day check-ins along
the way. Mary Boals was contracted by Synod Council earlier
this year to maintain her position through December 31st. The
4 of them have been instrumental in guiding me through this
transition. When you see them or speak with them, please
thank them for their faithful service.
Future Staffing: I am currently working with the ELCA on
the position description for a DEM (Director of Evangelical
Mission). This position is a partnership between the Northwestern Ohio Synod and the Domestic Mission unit of the
ELCA. Pastor Cathy Schibler has agreed to serve in a part time
capacity as the Director of Candidacy. Sherry Krieger will be
working with the Call Facilitators to assist those congregations
and rostered leaders that are in the call process. As stated
above the Transition Team will be offering guidance and
leadership on a future staffing configuration.
As I ponder these past 5 weeks, here are 5 discoveries I have
made:
1. This is a faster game. I ran track in high school and in
college. In high school, I was pretty good. In college, I was
average, because the game was that much faster. While in
the parish, I had time to ponder and to pray. I already find
that there is less time to ponder. But I know that I must
find the time to pray.
2. I will make mistakes. In the parish there were a number of
times that I had to beg forgiveness from others. There will
be times when I will beg your forgiveness. Please know
that the decisions I make, I make for the sake of the Gospel
and the Church. Please also know that there will be times
when those decisions will be wrong. Please forgive me.
3. There is a huge learning curve, and I still don't know what
I don't know. Bishop colleagues tell me that it takes about
2-3 years to learn the ins and outs of this office. My wife
Rachel calls me a "Baby Bishop." In many ways it's true.
There is so much to learn.
4. In 5 weeks, there have been many joys and already a few
challenges. I have made a promise to myself and now to
you that I will not allow the challenges to trump the joys.
Every time I work in a challenging context or with a
challenging leader, I will spend an equal amount of time in
a joyful context and with a joyful leader. As the bishop I
reserve the right to decide how the time granted to me by
God will be spent and I reserve the right to decide the
difference between challenging and joyful.
5. Finally, as I have long known, prayer is powerful. I have
already witnessed the power of prayer in a congregational
setting. Prayer (and the Holy Spirit) has the power to
transform contexts and to change hearts. The promise of
your prayers mean so much to me, and when you tell me
that you are praying for me, I can see it in your eyes, and I
find great comfort and hope in the prayers you lift to God
on my behalf. Please keep them coming.

bit longer than future e-mails will be, but there was and is a lot
to cover. We are in this together, and I am honored to be in this
with you, for the light of Christ shines in you and through you.

Mini Prayer Cloths
These are a take-off of our prayer shawls. They will be given out
in addition to our shawls. They are small enough to fit into a
pocket or purse. They can also be carried into surgery and taken
on vacation.
We have a pattern in the office for a crocheted version of the
cloths. You may stop in and get a copy, if you are interested in
making some for us to give out.

of our homebound members and would like to
participate in the BELIEVE campaign, please

evangelism and discipleship of children around the
world. Every gift is an opportunity to share the
Gospel. Many boys and girls also participate in our
12-lesson discipleship course, The Greatest Journey,
where they learn how to faithfully follow Christ and
share Him with others.

Are you interested in making a
prayer shawl (knit, crochet,
cro-hook, sewn, quilted, fleece
fringed, etc.)? We have pattern
sources for you. Basic sizes are
18-25” wide by 60-75” long.

questions. Prayer Shawls are
used to comfort those in any kind
of need and are available in our Mission Action
Center. They can also be used for baptisms,
weddings, milestone birthdays, etc. You also may
request one just because… When taking a prayer
shawl, please mark down the recipients name and
your name as the giver. Completed prayer shawls
may be dropped off at the office from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.,
M-F, or Sunday morning. We do tag them so people
know they are coming from the women of Bethlehem.
FROM THE FINANCIAL SECRETARY
At the September Council meeting, Ken’s report shows that
as of the end of August, we had received $197,743 in
General Fund Income for the year and $231,409
expenditures for the same period. Typically the last quarter
of the year brings in a bigger share of the year’s income
than other quarters so we are hoping that you can help
bridge the gap between what was budgeted and what we
take in for the year. God has gifted all of us so generously.
Can we all help bring the income of this church closer to
the expenditures that we make for the furtherance of our
work as believers in the mission of making disciples?
