SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION Saturdays 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. (Church) Mondays after 8:30 a.m. Mass (Chapel) Mondays after 12:00 noon Mass (Church) Sunday, September 14, 2014 The Exaltation of the Holy Cross Dear Folks, This week and last, you should have seen a deacon at all of the Masses. Some Masses he served as a deacon, and others he came out to help distribute Holy Communion. Deacon Kyle Metzger is a transitional deacon, who is finishing his last year of studies at Mount Saint Marys Seminary in Emmitsburg. [As an aside, the 'transitional' adjective in front of 'deacon' is the Church's way of identifying that he is in formation to be ordained a priest. This is in contrast to 'permanent' deacons who are not on a path to priesthood]. Deacon Metzger will be with us for about 2 weekends a month, and will have an opportunity to preach. Additionally, we will have two more seminarians coming down from Emmitsburg to teach CCD on Wednesday evenings. So we are setting a new St. John the Apostle record with 3 seminarians serving the parish this coming year! Thank you for welcoming these men. And a reminder about submitting your pictures for the 2014 St. John's photo contest. Prizes will be given to winners in several categories. Each person may submit up to a maximum of 10 photos. I prefer that you email me the pictures ([email protected]) in a reasonably high resolution (so that they can display nicely on the Jumbotron which has a resolution of 1920x1080). When sending photos by email, it works best if you send 2 or 3 at a time. Remember that photos must be submitted by the end of September. And Sign up Sunday is next weekend. Take some time to really consider how you might use your gifts and talents to serve the Lord. We all want to hear a personal specific invitation. We want to hear the Lord say to us, "I need you." And this really is a mystery, that the Lord "needs us." He doesn't need us because of any insufficiency. He needs up because in his infinite Goodness He has chosen to share his work, mission, life and love with us! He needs us because he has given us the ability to say "Yes" or "No" to his work, mission, life, and love. Please allow yourself to say "yes" to the call that he has whispered in your soul. Look over the list of ministries in this week's bulletin, and come prepared to Sign-Up next Sunday. This is the heart of the Gospel, loving the Lord with your whole heart mind and soul, and your neighbor as yourself. pax, fr mosimann SAVE THE DATE! Please join Father Mosimann and your parish family for a fun, relaxing afternoon on the rectory lawn at the annual St. John’s Parish Picnic Sunday, October 12th from 3:30 to 6:30pm. There is still some space available, and we will do our best to place your children, both new and returning students. If you have not yet registered your children, please contact the Office of Religious Education (703-777-3891 or [email protected] or [email protected]) for information. Catechist Positions Still Available There are still about four catechist positions available as well as about 15 catechist aide positions. If you would like to volunteer your time to help with this very worthwhile ministry, please contact Diana in the Office of Religious Education (703777-3891, ext 110 or [email protected]) Explaining the Mass to Children The next bit of the Mass is called the Greeting. After the priest has venerated the altar with a kiss, he moves to the Celebrant’s Chair. That’s the big chair he sits in during the Mass. The priest and the congregation are still standing, and as the priest says “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit”, everyone blesses themselves with the Sign of the Cross. Sometimes, a priest will say “good morning” or some other pleasantry before the blessing, but other times he will just jump right into it! After everyone signs themselves, the priest extends his hands and says “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all”, or something very similar, and together everyone responds with “And with your spirit”. The words of the priest mean that he hopes that God’s spirit will give the people of God (that’s us!) the ability and desire to live our faith every day. Our response of “And with your spirit”, is a pretty curious sounding one, but basically we are just expressing our desire that the Holy Spirit help the priest to fulfill his work in the Church. It’s so much better when we know what we are saying and why. We can say it with feeling because we really mean it! Catechetical Sunday September 20 & 21 The theme this year for Catechetical Sunday is “Teaching about God’s Gift of Forgiveness”. Next Sunday during all the masses, we will honor all Catechists, those who share in the evangelizing and teaching mission of the Church through a special rite of commissioning and blessing. This will occur at all masses. FAITH Faith is the union of God with the soul. —St. John of the Cross A Catechist’s Prayer Father of all families, you have called me to serve the family in truth and love as a catechist. May I be faithful to this call, rooted in your Word, and open to the gifts of the Holy Spirit. May I use these gifts, especially the gifts of faith, hope, and love, to serve the family as a witness to you, who are love and life and the source and destiny of all families. Let your Spirit enlighten my mind and strengthen my heart so that I can be a path of Christ’s love to families, especially those in need, the homebound and aged, the disabled and disheartened. Through the intercession of Mary and Joseph, I pray for the Church, the Bride of Christ, whose mission to build a civilization of love passes through the family. Amen.
