5th Sunday Dinner - Sunday, July 31st After the 10:30 AM Mass St. John Undercroft
The idea of a 5th Sunday Dinner is to gather to share a meal and to meet with
other people in the parish, to reconnect with old friends, and to welcome those
who may be interested in joining our parish. We all know the story of the stone soup,
so if we all just bring a little, we’ll have plenty for everyone. In the hope of promoting variety,
please bring the dish that corresponds with the first letter of your last name:
A - F Sides or Appetizers G - L Snacks or Desserts M - R Entrée S - Z Vegetables or Salads
The St. John Undercroft will be open at 9:30 AM so that you can drop off your carry-in dish. Hot dishes
will be kept hot and cold will be kept cold. Drinks, table service, and serving utensils will be provided
by the Knights of Columbus. Questions? Please call the office 422-0602. We hope you’ll attend!

Health Ministry:
Beverage Bewares & Healthy Hydrators
It's important for our bodies - which are
60% water, and our brains - which are
80% water, to stay hydrated, especially
in the summer heat. However, not all
liquids are equally good at replacing the water
we lose every day - about 6 pints....
Bad: Sodas are "carbonated liquid candy.”
Better: Flavored water. Make your own by
adding a dash of lemon, lime or cranberry.
Bad: Fruit juice, for it can contain as much sugar
as pop. It does provide vitamins and minerals.
Limit intake to one cup a day or dilute with water.
Better: Eat whole fruit which is high in water
and essential, insoluble fiber.
Bad: Energy drinks, which can be high in caffeine,
sugar and medicinal herbs.
Better: Lo-fat milk, the ultimate, natural energy
drink with 80% water with protein, carbs and
lots of nutrients.
Bad: Alcohol is a huge dehydrator. If you choose
to drink, alternate alcoholic beverage with an
equal amount of water.
Better: Coffee and tea both contain caffeine but
also good antioxidants. Limit amount to three or
four cups a day.
What about Sports Drinks?
While energy drinks contain high levels of
caffeine, sports drinks contain electrolytes,
protein, sugar and sodium which can bring a
body into balance faster than water following
grueling exercise lasting more than 90 minutes.
For shorter workouts, sports drinks mean extra
calories you don't need!

Introductions to Sunday Readings
by Bishop Ken Untener, in collaboration
with Catherine Haven and Fr. Bill Taylor
First Reading - Deuteronomy 30:10-14
The events in this reading take place as the Israelites
are camped on the shore of the Jordan River, ready to
enter the Promise Land. Moses makes it clear to the
people that they are expected to remain faithful to
the Lord after they have settled in their new land.
Second Reading - Colossians 1:15-20
Today and for three more Sundays, the second
reading will be from the letter to the Colossians.
This letter responds to a widespread belief that God
ruled the world through the mediation of angels
who were given their own powers. The author
quotes an early Christian hymn the emphasizes
that Jesus is the one and only mediator between
God and the world.

Wanted: Parishioners for the
Offertory Procession
Looking for an easy way
to get more out of Mass?
Want to get involved
without getting on another
schedule or adding to your to-do list?
Why not take a turn carrying up the gifts?
You’ll find an Offertory Procession book in the
back of both churches. If the square for the
Mass you’re attending is blank, we need you!
Just write in your name so that the ushers know that
you’re carrying up the gifts. You’ll likely see an usher
so you can let them know you’ve signed up as well.
It’s that easy! Get more out of Mass. Get involved!
Congratulations and welcome to these recently baptized children.

Baptism Bibs Hand Sewn by
Parishioner Darlene Witte
Children baptized at Holy Family
are special! We welcome them as
new members of our faith family
and we clothe them in white, showing that they
are a “new creation,” a new member of Christ’s
body, the Church. Parishioner Darlene Witte
hand sews bibs for infants and stoles for older
children, each one including an embroidered
cross made of over sixty separate stitches!
Thank you Darlene!
Are you expecting your first baby or
want your first child baptized?
We ask that you attend a baptismal
preparation class. These classes
are held quarterly in March,
June, September and December.
Watch future bulletins for the actual date,
time and location of the class and simply call
the parish office 422-0602 to register.
For Young Parishioners - My Mass Book
A Child’s Resource Guide
We have available My Mass Book, a child’s
resource guide for all the essential points of the
Mass. These guides include colorful pictures,
easy to follow prayers - including clear PRIEST
parts and PEOPLE responses - and additional
notations that help in explaining to younger parishioners
what’s happening, why and when during the Mass celebration.
These guides are meant to stay in the churches, so please be
sure to return them after Mass.
Don’t forget to pick up a
weekly take-home
Children’s Worship Bulletin available in two age groups:
3 to 6 and 7 to 12.
Did You Know That Both St. John’s & Holy Trinity
Have A ‘Cry Room?’ for Fussy Children?
Parents with fussy children can still hear and
see the Mass from the back of either church.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION!

3. (a) “The whole power of the sacrament of penance consists in restoring us to God’s grace and joining us
with him in an intimate friendship.” (CCC, 1468.)
4. (d) “Grace is…the free and undeserved help that God gives us to respond to his call to become children of
God, adoptive sons, partakers of the divine nature and of eternal life.” (CCC, 1996.)
5. (b) Jesus, the Good Shepherd, came so that we might have the best life through knowing, serving, and
loving God in this world and being with him for all eternity after we die.
