A Prayer for the Armed Forces
Almighty God, stretch forth your
mighty arm to strengthen and
protect the men and women of
our Armed Forces. As they face
the myriad of challenges and
decisions that each day is destined to bring, may they be
anchored by their faith, protected
by your presence and comforted by the knowledge
that they are loved by you and by this community of
faith. Grant that, meeting danger with courage, and
all occasions with discipline and loyalty, they may
truly serve the cause of justice and peace to the
honor of your holy name, through Jesus Christ our
Lord. Amen
The Parish Blood Drive is TODAY! in Canning Hall.
If you have an appointment, please keep it.
If not ~ “walk-ins” are very welcome.

Religious Education (C.C.D.) has some openings.
There are still openings in grades 1-8 of the
Religious Education (C.C.D.) Program for
children of the parish who attend the public
school. If your child attends the public
school and is not enrolled in the Religious
Education Program, please call Mr. Joseph
Kummer at 773/622-3022 ext. 366 for information and to register. Religious Education is vital for all children no matter the age because it helps them to learn the fundamentals of our faith, and supports the parents in living the
Catholic-Christian way of life, growing as a child of God.
Sacramental preparation is always a two-year process, so if
your child is in the first grade, he/she should be beginning to
prepare for First Reconciliation and First Eucharist. If your child
is in Junior High, then they would be preparing for Confirmation.
All the grades in-between reinforce all that has been learned so
far and provides the foundation for what is to come. Don’t delay.
Call Mr. Joseph Kummer at 622-3022 ext. 366 for the details.
Pet Blessing
Sunday, October 3

Saint Francis of Assisi (October

all God’s creatures with a traditional Blessing of Animals
on Sunday, October 3 at
2:30 p.m. on the “grassy
knoll” by Mary’s statue. Bring
your pets, large and small,
but during the ceremony, please
make sure that all Francis’
friends are properly restrained.

Our Lady of the Rosary Novena Prayer
My dearest Mother Mary, behold me,
your child, in prayer at your feet.
Accept this Holy Rosary, which I
offer you in accordance with your
requests at Fatima, as a proof of my
tender love for you, for the intentions
of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, in atonement for the offenses committed
against your Immaculate Heart, and
for this special favor which I earnestly
request in my Rosary Novena:
(Mention your request).
I beg you to present my petition to
your Divine Son. If you will pray for
me, I cannot be refused. I know, dearest Mother, that you want me to seek
God’s holy Will concerning my
request. If what I ask for should not
be granted, pray that I may receive
that which will be of greater benefit to
my soul.
I offer you this spiritual “Bouquet of
Roses” because I love you. I put all
my confidence in you, since your
prayers before God are most powerful. For the greater glory of God and
for the sake of Jesus, your loving Son,
hear and grant my prayer. Sweet Heart
of Mary, be my salvation.
This novena is to be said along with a
daily rosary.
“Listen, my faithful children; open up
your petals, like roses planted near
running waters; send up the sweet
odor of incense, break forth in blossoms like the lily. Send up the sweet
odor of your hymn of praise; bless the
Lord for all he has done.” (Sir 39:1314)
The Holy Journey to Heaven — Awaken, Renew and
Strengthen your spirit by the Holy Spirit !!! The Love
Holy Trinity Blessed Mission invites you to our “Grow in
God’s Love Program” for your spiritual growth, based on
the Holy Roman Catholic Faith.
Since Jesus Christ died so we can live in His kingdom in
eternal true happiness the future union with God and one
another, we must prepare our hearts to be pure and holy
by learning to love God and one another.
Meetings in English will start in October, 2004 on
Thursdays from 6:30 PM until 8 PM in Canning Hall. For
information, call Roman at 773/251-2835 or Fr. Mark
Jurzyk at 773/622-5900 ext. 5.
All the ladies of the parish are invited to

Pope John Paul II and the Dignity of Workers
ADULT SCRIPTURE STUDY CONTINUES
“MARK – GETTING TO KNOW JESUS”
In September 1981, Pope John Paul II published one of
his most revered encyclicals, Laborem Exercens (On
Human Work), which focused on the nature of work and
the dignity of the worker. This landmark encyclical
defined all work as a vocation and as a "good thing"
that allowed men and women to achieve "fulfillment as
a human being." In the encyclical, our Holy Father also
discussed the rights of workers, defending just wages,
benefits and the organization of free associations of
workers. This "Gospel of Work," as Pope John Paul II
sees it, reflects on ways to participate in earthly
progress and to bring about God's Kingdom.
Our Holy Father's life and ministry are celebrated in the
Papal and Polish Heritage Room of the Pope John Paul
II Cultural Center; a Center dedicated to preserving the
tremendous intellectual legacy of this son of Poland.

ON CATHOLIC CHRISTIANS AND FR. CAMELI
Copyright 2004 by John B. Reynolds (www.jrwrites.com)
Fr. Lou Cameli—the Archdiocese of Chicago’s Director
of Ongoing Formation for Priests—spoke in my parish hall
the other night on “Catholic Identity: Who Are We As
Catholic Christians and What Makes Us Different?” You’d
think that a priest whose daily work is to help other priests
grow in the faith would be well-qualified to lead such a discussion. Duh... Cameli holds a doctorate degree in theology and is the author of several books. He was the right guy
at the podium, OK, and this became clear as the evening
unfolded.
He began by saying that the foundation of our faith is a
belief in Jesus, and he added early on that the things he
would be covering were things that we as Catholic
Christians are already living and breathing, even if we
haven’t taken the time to label them. He said, for example,
that we see the world as being created good, as being
marked by sin, and as being redeemed by Christ. He said,
too, that we embrace the sacraments as a way of finding
God; that we celebrate tradition not only for remembering
the past but for moving forward as well; and that we recognize the authority of leadership and experience.
He also stressed that Catholic Christians have a sense
of community that goes beyond our individualism. Yes, we
all pray in our own ways, but we have a basic understanding
that we are integral to the salvation story. He said that our
gathering as a community of faith week after week for
Mass—or even attending adult ed sessions on Catholic iden-
tity—shows that we are on the same path at the same time to
the same end, a notion which Cameli expands in his book,
Going to God Together. I especially like what he said in
cementing his point that night: “Our relationship with God
is personal, but it's never private.”
I laughed when Fr. Cameli said that as a child, he
enjoyed hearing more than anything else a single expression
from his mom or dad: “I might as well do it myself...” One
could argue that God had the same thought in mind when he
sent his only Son to live for us, to die for us, to rise for us.
An essential benchmark of Catholic Christianity, though—as
Cameli pointed out—is the notion that we are working in
cooperation with God’s grace and with one another to
change the world. We are involved. Hopeful. And open to
all.
It’s funny. Warm weather and a sluggish A/C system
prompted Fr. Cameli to remove his collar before he began
speaking, and in retrospect, this spontaneous action was a
metaphor for his entire talk. Why? Because he helped us to
look beyond the symbols of our faith—endearing though
they may be—to the essence of our faith. We believe in
Jesus the Christ, and we believe that building up the
Kingdom isn’t about you or about me, it’s about us. With or
without the statues, the incense, and even the Roman collars,
let’s help each other along the path. We might as well do it
ourselves, after all, for in a larger context than Mr. and Mrs.
Cameli intended, I think that’s the whole idea.
