JOHN NEUMANN Recently, five of our teens travelled to Newark, New Jersey, for our annual mission trip with Young Neighbors in Action. I chaperoned the trip with Scott Morgan, our seminarian in residence this summer. Before we drove to Newark, we stopped and attended Mass at The National Shrine of St. John Neumann in downtown Philadelphia. The National Shrine of St. John Neumann is located in the basement of the church of St. Peter the Apostle. The shrine is referred to as the “lower church” of the parish building, and weekday Masses are celebrated in the shrine. The body of St. John Neumann lies in state in the altar of the shrine, and pictures can be found online at the shrine website (stjohnneumann.org). The shrine features statues, an extraordinary mosaic of St. John Neumann, and a series of stained glass windows which depict his life story. We were excited to speak with Fr. Peter Linh, one of the Redemptorist priests assigned to the parish. After he celebrated Sunday Mass, he spoke with our group about the incredible story of St. John Neumann. Much of his story we had heard before, but to hear the story told within the building where the shrine is located was indeed a special moment for all of us. St. John Neumann was born in Bohemia in 1811. He was ready to be ordained a priest, but at that time there was an overabundance of priests, and the bishop was no longer ordaining priests that year. St. John Neumann wrote many of the bishops of Europe, but the story was the same: no ordinations because there were simply too many priests. Finally, the bishop of New York agreed to ordain him, and he was ordained a priest in New York City, and was assigned to the upper New York area in 1836. It is difficult to imagine what it would have been like to leave your family and your own country in order to be ordained. He was a lonely parish priest, and eventually joined the Redemptorist order, a community of brothers and priests dedicated to helping the poor. Named the bishop of Philadelphia in 1852, he began his extensive work creating the Diocesan School System and the 40 hours devotion. He built the school system in Philadelphia, from 2 schools, to an astounding 100 schools. St. John Neumann cared much for the many immigrants in the area, and studied extensively so he could hear Confessions in six different languages. He died while on the streets of Philadelphia, serving the people in his diocese, on January 5, 1860 on a cold winter day. He was 48 years old. St. John Neumann requested to be buried at St. Peter the Apostle church. He was canonized in 1977. Fr. Peter went on to describe to our teens the amazing miracles he himself has witnessed through the intercession of St. John Neumann. He also assured us that we walked on holy ground. St. John Paul II visited there twice to pray, and St. Katherine Drexel also often visited to pray. Our teens were given St. John Neumann medals from the shrine at the end of our mission trip to mark our pilgrimage. We learned much about our patron saint, and look forward to sharing his story for many years to come. Here is a quote from our beloved patron saint, St. John Neumann: “Whenever the opportunity presents itself, I will offer my services to my brethren. Every time I meet one of them, I will treat him as I would Our Lord Himself.” St. John Neumann, pray for us! Becky Albrinck Praying for Vocations….Thank you to those taking the Vocation Chalice. To have the Vocation Chalice in your home, call Diane Sova (330-6440) or the parish office (742-0953). Prayer materials are provided. Vocation Chalice for the week of July 31 ~ Kitty Waters Lector Formation and Training in August For those of you who are interested in becoming a lector for St. John Neumann, there will be a formation and training session on Tuesday, August 9, 2016, at 6:00 p.m. We will meet in the church Nave. The training will take approximately 2 hours to complete. During the training, there will be an opportunity for you to proclaim the Word at the Ambo. Please take one of the Missalettes at church and choose a reading from either the Old or New Testament that you wish to proclaim. Practice the reading at home and come prepared to proclaim as you would at one of our liturgies. If you have any questions about the August session, please feel free to call Pat Bergen at 907-1335. Is Bible Study for You? What is it? It’s a small community that reads, learns, and reflects on the Bible and its meaning in their lives. Often, Catholics are reluctant to participate in Bible Studies, thinking they are not well-versed in the Bible. Be assured, few of us are well-versed! We will study the “Book of Ruth.” Please consider coming and know you will be welcomed! This is an opportunity to become part of a community on a journey to better understand and live the Bible. Please join us this Monday, August 1st, and bring your bibles with you (extra bibles will be available if needed). The sessions are scheduled for: Monday evenings, 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the Youth Room on August 1, 8, 22 and 29 Each week is a “stand-alone,” so come for as many or few sessions as you are led and are able. There is no cost for this study. Please bring your bible; or they are available here. For further information, please contact Dottie Foster at 742-0953, ext. 13, or [email protected]. So, is the Spirit leading you to join us? Know that you are most welcome. “Life is an opportunity, benefit from it. Life is beauty, admire it. Life is a dream, realize it. Life is a challenge, meet it. Life is a duty, complete it. Life is a game, play it. Life is a promise, fulfill it. Life is a sorrow, overcome it. Life is a song, sing it. Life is a struggle, accept it. Life is a tragedy, confront it. Life is an adventure, dare it. Life is luck, make it. Life is too precious, do not destroy it. Life is life, fight for it.”“If you judge people, you have no time to love them.” ~ Mother Teresa Festival News! Tickets are $50.00 and are available in the Parish Office. Baker, D. & J. Backus, L. Hindersman What is the KAIROS Prison Ministry by Deacon Larry Day A few years ago, I joined an ecumenical group of men who are a part of a prison ministry at Warren Correctional Institution. We are the KAIROS team that serves the men of Warren Correctional Institution. Our team is part of an international effort that strives to serve every institution across the state and the nation. Our efforts at Warren are somewhat comprehensive. I thought it wise that I take a moment – before I start asking for cookies! – to explain how all of the parts fit together. Four-Day Retreat…Throughout the year, we conduct two fourday retreats. In these retreats we initiate the men into a Christian way of think and living. We see/meet as many as 32 new residents at each retreat. During these four days, we offer a very intense introduction to Christianity. Our days begin at 6:30 a.m. and finish about 9:00 p.m. By the end of these four days, through teachings, presentations and discussions we know the residents… and they know us! The beginning levels of trust are established as we share our lives – both the good and bad! – and they share their stories with us. We bring in three meals a day – prepared by an outside team of men and women. On Saturday morning, as the prisoners work with a few members of the team, the rest of us visit every cell in the institution – all 1,500 men – and give each resident a bag of two dozen, homemade cookies. It gives us a chance to visit every cell… every resident… and offer a short blessing or word of encouragement. The retreat ends with a ceremony that welcomes the 32 men to the KAIROS community at Warren. All previous graduates are invited to attend… most do. The new men are offered the opportunity to share what the retreat has meant to them… they all speak. It is a very emotional evening. Weekly Prayer and Share…Every Sunday afternoon, I go up, along with a few members of the Team, and we meet with the residents in small prayer groups. All residents who have graduated from a KAIROS Program anywhere in the state of Ohio are invited – they must continue to come on a regular basis to receive an invitation. These prayer sessions are personal, honest and often emotional. This is just about the only opportunity that the men have to talk with men they can trust. Prison life is not easy and seems to be more and more violent. The men choose to come from all corners of the prison to the chapel for these prayer sessions. By walking across the yard, they are making a decision and a statement about their values… some residents are not happy to see them do that… so it takes a level of courage and strength for them to come every Sunday afternoon. But, come they do… sometimes alone… sometimes in small groups. Sometimes they face retaliation in their block when they return, but they still come… every week. This Prayer and Share is probably the most import part of the KAIROS Ministry. Day Retreat…Every three months, the Team provides a day-long retreat for all of the KAIROS graduates. The chapel will only hold 70 people + the Team. There is always a waiting list to get one of the 70 seats. This retreat allows a refresher course, if you will, on a Christian topic… a re-charging of their batteries to say it another way. This retreat allows the opportunity for us to be with the men and to help them continue to help themselves. So… that’s how your cookies fit into the overall prison ministry at Warren Corrections. On behalf of the men of Warren, I thank you for your willingness to bake and pray on their behalves. They are amazed that people they do not even know care enough to do this for them. I thank them every Sunday for the opportunity to serve and thank them for being the blessing that they are. I thank you as well, for answering the call of Matthew 25, “…I was in prison, and you visited me.” By your cookies and your prayer, you are with me as I visit the men of Warren… thank you! Deacon Larry, Corpus Christi Church ST. JOHN NEUMANN Stewardship Corner We are grateful to those who bring or send their Sunday offering envelopes to our parish when they have been away visiting or on vacation. Thank you! What we struggle all our lives to learn is that life does not consist of possessions nor our perceived security, but of being possessed by God. • To have ears to hear the “cries of the poor,” • To have eyes to “seek and find the forgotten, the suffering or the deprived,” and • To have hearts that “bring God’s love to the poor” through their generosity and donations. Thank you for your continuous support to our St. Vincent de Paul Conference. Project Rachel is a Post-Abortive Healing Ministry in the Catholic Church. For many, it takes weeks, months or even years to come to terms with the feelings you are experiencing. By acknowledging the connection between a role played in an abortion experience, and your present emotions, you have taken the first step in healing. Take the next step and call our confidential helpline: (513) 784-0531. Since 1994, Project Rachel has ministered to women and men who have lost a child through abortion. Knowing what we do know now, there are relatives, friends, partners and others involved in the experience that are also suffering the loss of an unborn child, and need to honor the child and have an opportunity to heal while grieving and mourning their loss. The Family and Respect Life Office is offering a Retreat from Friday, September 23, through Sunday afternoon, September 25th. We invite you to “Look into your heart, listen to the voice of God. Help yourself by accepting His love and forgiveness.” For more information or registration, please call the Family and Respect Life Office at 513-421-3131, ext. 2620 or 937222-0227. There is no charge; a freewill offering will be accepted. RETREAT FOR WIDOWED, DIVORCED – September 23-25, 2016. “Beginning Experience,” a peer ministry for people who have lost a spouse through separation, death or divorce, will hold its fall weekend retreat September 23-25 at Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Center, 5440 Moeller Avenue, in the Norwood area of Cincinnati. EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME – JULY 31, 2016 The Jesuit Spiritual Center Youth Ministry team is seeking additional applicants for the NEXT Youth Ministry internship program. NEXT is a 9-month-long full-time internship where interns will gain skills and experience in junior high and high school retreats, including faith sharing, small and large group facilitation, leading praise and worship music, event coordination, leading prayer experiences and group initiatives. Interns will also receive personal and professional support and development from the Director and 2 Associate Directors throughout the program. The internship begins August 15, 2016, and runs through April 2017. There will be a monthly living stipend provided, and interns are responsible for securing their own room and board. For more information or to apply, please visit our website at http://jesuitspiritualcenter.com/youthministry/ internship/. Parents: Following is the conversation starter for this week. We continue to look for opportunities and materials that will serve to support you in forming your children’s faith lives. We welcome your feedback to Dottie at [email protected] or 742-0953, ext. 13. These activities come from a program called “The Meal Box.” The intent is to provide mealtime conversation starters that will engage your children and tips for the parents to apply the general theme to the family’s faith life. Table Discussion: If you could change the ending to any movie you’ve ever seen, what movie would it be and how would you change the ending? Parents: Prayer changes things. It may not change what I am struggling with , but it does change me. It makes me more willing to seek the will of God and pursue it in my life. When that happens, I find that what really needed to change were not the circumstances, but myself. Activity: Share with your family how a prayer was answered for you – not necessarily what you asked for, but answered in an unexpected way. Share, too, that this experience has taught you that God knows what we really need and to trust His answer… 40 Excerpt from The Meal Box by Bret Nicholaus and Tom McGrath (Loyola Press, 2009).
