Gropp Honored for Outstanding City Management
Reporters Devin Corbitt & Megan Goff
City administrator Mark Gropp recently earned the prestigious, nation-wide Strathmore’s Who’s Who award. Receiving the
award was a pleasant surprise for Gropp.
"I didn’t do this on my own," Gropp said, referring to the Itasca residents.
City Hall first discovered that Gropp had been anonymously nominated for the award when they received a letter in the mail and
then a 30-45 minute phone call in which Gropp was interviewed.
When Gropp received the plaque, which read, "Acceptance is limited to individuals who have demonstrated leadership and achievement in their
occupation, industry or profession" he also received a letter that explained that the award was not given to just anyone. Continued on page 3.
Teal Family Headstone Set
Photos by Carl Sweeny – Information from Issue #8 story.
In February, Carl Sweeny did a story on John Teal, one of the colorful characters of Itasca’s history. Teal was born on
March 12, 1876 in Covington. His family moved to Itasca in 1888 and when John was twelve years old, he went to work as a
shoeshine boy and handy man in the Tom Vancleave barbershop. For over 77 years, he worked at a variety of jobs, touching
many lives in the Itasca community.

7th Annual Chamber of Commerce Barbecue Cook-Off Big Success
28 Cookers Compete for Taste Titles
Ronnie Wade, head cook of the Blazen BBQ team, earned the Grand Champion title of the 7th Annual Itasca
Chamber of Commerce BBQ Cook-Off. He was first in brisket and pork spare ribs, 8th in chicken and 6th in the
beans category.
Itascans have decided that if the city needs rain, schedule a community event for the weekend. That was the case
in June as the clouds opened up on both the Juneteenth Celebration and the 7th Annual Chamber of Commerce
Cook Off. The rain was needed and it did not dampen the spirits and enthusiasm of the participants of either
event.
Twenty-eight cookers were on hand to compete for the blue ribbon and prize money in four categories: brisket, pork spare ribs, chicken and beans.

If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will
forgive their sin and will heal their land. Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place. I have chosen and consecrated this temple
so that my name may be there forever. My eyes and my heart will always be there.

Everyone invited!

We know that God created man from the ground
What kind of soil are you? Mark 4: 1-9, 13-20
Are you the wayside soil: soil that has never been cultivated, packed, and the seeds have fallen and the birds have eaten them without you even knowing that they
were there?
Are you the stony places: where the seeds sprang up; but wilted in the heat of the day, because of the shallow soil they had no root?
Are you the soil of thorns: where the cares of the world have choked out God’s seed?
Are you the good soil: where the word of God has grown and prospered?
Whatever the soil, won’t you join us for worship at the
CHURCH OF CHRIST 200 N. Aquilla Itasca.
Where one helps clear the ground, one sows, another waters, and God gives the increase. We strengthen and edify one another. 1 Cor. 3: 17-19

Itasca’s City Manager Honored
Continued from page 1.
Gropp’s name is recorded forever in Strathmore’s Who’s Who. The book, which is kept in the White House library, includes only 60,000 names in
each edition of the book; only 11 of these names are city administrators.
Gropp was appointed to the position of city administrator in March 2003. His job is to oversee the needs of the City by advising the heads of the
various departments. In short, he makes sure the town is running smoothly and that everyone has water every day and that everyone is doing their
jobs correctly.
One of the City Manager’s short-term goals is to finish repairing Itasca’s roads. Since there was not enough money to finish the job last year, Gropp
hopes to finish it this year. The main long-term goal for Itasca is to attract more businesses to the town.
"A grocery store would be nice," Gropp said, "but that is going to take a while."
Since becoming city administrator of Itasca three years ago, Gropp has received numerous awards from various organizations including the Itasca
Chamber of Commerce and the Cinco de Mayo Committee.
Teal Headstone
Continued from page 1.
John Teal, his wife and parents were all buried at the Itasca Cemetery, but none of them had a headstone to mark their
graves.
Shortly after the article appeared in the PPP, a number of citizens and former residents contacted Carl Sweeny with the
idea and money to purchase a headstone.
Last month Sweeny laid the foundation (pictured above) for the stone and on Monday, July 10, 2006, the stone was set into
place. Not only is the stone a tribute to Mr. Teal and his family; it says a lot about the hearts of the people of Itasca.
PACES Students Visit East Texas Baptist University
Submitted by Nichole Channon- Photo by Patty Miller
A few weeks before high school was over for seniors Crystal Burns, Michael Diggs, Henry Charles, Luis
Castellanos, Cassie Dominguez, Markeisha Marshall and Nichole Channon they were given the opportunity to
look into college life. Dana Robinson of the PACES program arranged the trip to East Texas Baptist
University in Marshall, Texas.
The PACES program is designed to work with students to help them investigate alternatives that are available
after graduation and in some cases to help them find the necessary resources to take advantage of the
opportunities.
Sophomore Ashley Villarreal also accompanied the group on the four-hour bus trip. The group was
chaperoned by Itasca ISD director of transportation and their bus driver Patty Miller

7th Annual Chamber of Commerce Cook Off
Continued from page 1
The number of entries was up from last year’s twenty cookers. Over the last several years the Itasca Cook Off has become a regular part of the
itinerary for many of the cook off enthusiasts, They look forward to seeing many of the townspeople that help put together this yearly event and the
other regular participants .
The delicious barbeque luncheon held in the Rotary Room was well attended. A record number of 270+ plates and over 60 pounds of barbequed
brisket were sold. Many Rotarians were on hand to help the Chamber members with the luncheon. Carol Alley headed up the luncheon crew and
added her special West Texas hominy dish to the menu.
There were a number of local vendors on hand selling a variety of wares. One of the most popular areas was the "Wine Tasting Table" provided by
Michael and Nanette Cox of Wild Vine Wines. They displayed their award winning wines: silver medalist bottles of Strawberry Riesling and
Cabernet Sauvignon. In display was also a bottle of Tropical Riesling that proudly displayed its gold medal.
Petitions are being circulated for a local option election that would allow the sale of wine (only wine) on the premises of the holder of a winery permit.
Cox has purchased eight acres on HCR 4421 for the purpose of opening a winery and planting a vineyard.
Bob Wilson, Chamber of Commerce ex-officio and Chamber President Lance Meinzer kept the event running smoothly and the Boy Scouts were on
hand to keep the area clean and organized. The event was sanctioned by International Barbecue Cookers Association (IBCA) and was under the eye
of Head Judge Lynn Shivers. See page 5 for more Cook Off pictures.

Letter to Editor
Dear Barbara, As you know, some of the 1940’s era I H S graduating classes are going to be involved in a joint meeting of some of these long-ago
graduates for the November 10, 2006 Homecoming.
Now, as I have been trying to run down information on my Class of 1941, it is no surprise that many of the 48 members of my class are deceased.
Indeed, twelve of them were deceased in 1991 when we had our Fiftieth Class Reunion!
I am going to provide the names of all of my classmates who I know nothing about today and request you to run these names in the Paw Print Press—
in case anyone who reads this fine publication knows anything about any of these individuals. I would like to know whether each of these individuals
is still alive.
Inasmuch as there are quite a few of them you may want or need to space them out over several issues of the paper. That is your call. If you will,
please handle this request in whatever way you deem best. And, if this is too much to expect, that will be most understandable—and, indeed, I expect
very little helpful response. We are all so old! Faries McDaniel
