PASTOR’S CORNER
Greetings,
Here we are at the end of another
year. The older I get the faster the
year goes by. How was your year?
Are you closer to God? Do you
pray more often? Do you attend
Mass every Sunday? Are you
Fr. John Henderson
kinder and more compassionate?
These are the questions that I ask myself and I look
at my spiritual life. If you are not where you would
like to be, don’t be discouraged and don’t dwell on
how bad things are. A new day, a new year is just
around the corner. 2016 can be your opportunity for
real change. We are in a year of mercy where new life
can happen. This year allow God’s mercy to enter the
door of your heart. Do more than just make some
new year’s resolutions. We both know that does not
work. Now is the time for a deeper relationship with
God, a deeper relationship with the Church and a
deeper relationship with family members and
friends. God is calling you and me to be truly free
and truly open to God’s will. Paint a picture of 2016
and make sure you are in the painting. What are you
doing? Praying? Serving the poor and forgotten?
Celebrating life? Attending Mass? Embracing a family member? Being forgiven and forgiving?
May God bless you and may 2016 be a year of peace,
joy and love. Let God’s mercy reign in your heart and
share that mercy with one another. I also want to
take this opportunity to thank you for the many gifts
and prayers for Christmas. It truly is a blessing to be
a part of this great parish.

Christmas is one of the most important days of
the Church year, second only to Easter itself. It is
the feast of the incarnation, the feast of God becoming flesh (the Latin "in carne" means
"enfleshment"). It is a uniquely Christian teaching,
the Divine choosing to become one of us. Because
of this belief,God is not only Transcendent, but
also wholly Immanent, Emmanuel (God-with-us).
While remaining Transcendent (meaning we must
rise above our present condition to reach Him), He
is at the same time Immanent (meaning He is with
us as we rise toward Him). Every Eucharist is like
Christmas where the bread and wine are transformed into His flesh, His Body and Blood, and, in
a sense, He is born anew on the altar.

The liturgical season of Christmas begins with the
vigil Masses on Christmas Eve and concludes on
the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. During this
season, we celebrate the birth of Christ into our
world and into our hearts, and reflect on the gift of
salvation that is born with him…including the fact
that he was born to die for us.
The Christmas tree and the Nativity scene are
popular symbols of the season and a tradition in
many Christian homes. It is also traditional to exchange Christmas gifts with family and friends as a
way to honor God the Father's gift of his only son
to the world. Having received the gift of Christ, we
naturally want to pass that gift along to our loved

Saint Anthony’s Life
Teen is a ministry
open to all high school
students. We meet
Sundays at 5:00,
starting with dinner,
and ending at 6:45
before Mass. Newcomers and visitors
are always welcome—
just walk in the door, write down a few pieces
of information, and join the celebration! Any
teen is invited to visit or join our Life Teen
family. We pick back up on January 3rd.

PARISH SCHOOL
For the 2nd year, a St. Anthony parishioner/school parent has invited students and parents to help decorate
placemats for Meals on Wheels which will be delivered
to homebound citizens along with their holiday meals.
Meals on Wheels is very close to this mom’s heart. Her
grandmother wanted to continue living independently
but lived too far away for providing meals. Meals on
Wheels provided her grandmother with ready to eat
meals on a regular basis. Since that time, this St. Anthony mom does whatever she can whenever she can for
this organization.
Summer Mission Trip
Come be part of our summer Mission to Reno,
NV! This is a week-long experience you’ll
never forget, taking place the first week in
July.

Minutes of Life, Justice & Peace meeting for 11-12- 2015

Unplugging the Christmas Machine class by Gerlinde –Class is to be held on Saturday, November 7th,
from 9am-2pm. Currently no one has preregistered for the class. She downloaded course materials off
the web and is ready to go if someone comes to the class.
•
Catholic Campaign for Human Development – Nov 21st & 22nd at Mass – 2nd Collection is the only 2nd collection dedicated to social justice. Handout from Archdiocese on “10 Reasons to Promote the Catholic
Campaign for Human Development”.
•
Jubilee Year of Mercy – starts December 8th, 2015. Handout from Archdiocese with 14 things to do in our
daily lives throughout this year. We can use this as a means of developing our Social Justice bulletin column for the year incorporating one item each week.
•
Laudato Si’ Faith Sharing Guide for Lent – Handout from Archdiocese, written by Matt Cato and Brother
Cyril, who will be hosting a retreat on Saturday Jan.30th to train people to facilitate the classes.
•
Recruiting new members for LJP Committee: Workshop at Archdiocese taught by Sr. Rita to be held on
Nov. 30th, Dec. 1 & 2nd from 7-8:30pm Elise suggested via Gerlinde and the school, to reach out to young
parents. The school parents are required to volunteer for a ministry for a year versus doing share hours
now. Priscilla suggested prayer in humility, (? A great story of compassion and mercy?) I missed something here.
•
Laudato Si’: We are continuing to read the encyclical for ourselves and can go to the Jan. 30th retreat/
training for the Lenten Faith Sharing Program with Br. Cyril at the Archdiocese.
•
Fair Trade – Elise will investigate options and talk to the SCRIP folks at the school.
•
Speakers – Everyone look for speakers that could appeal to our parishioners.
•

There is always a need for blood, especially this time of the year.
Some facts about blood needs:
Every 2 seconds someone in the US needs blood
More than 44,000 blood donations are needed every day
The average blood red sell transfusion is about 3 pints
A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 pints of blood
Four types of products can be derived from blood, red cells, platelets, plasma, and cryoprecipitate. Typically 2 or 3
of these products are produced from 1 pint of blood; hence each donation can save up to 3 lives.

We begin Mass by declaring who we really are. The presider announces it in the words of his greeting: “The grace
of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God (the Father),
and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.”
This tells us who we are in relationship to the Father, Son,
and Holy Spirit. That is the key to our existence. If we listen, the words we hear at Mass will give us a fresh few of
life. The Introductory Rites (everything before the readings) are an exciting celebration of who we are.

COMMUNITY LIFE AND GROUPS
Prayer For The New Year
On New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day, the household
gathers at the table or at the Christmas tree or manger
scene. Many people make New Year’s Day a day of prayer
for peace.
All make the sign of the cross. The leader begins:
Let us praise the Lord of days and seasons and years,
saying:
Glory to God in the highest!
R/. And peace to his people on earth!
The leader may use these or similar words to introduce the blessing:
Our lives are made of days and nights, of seasons and
years, for we are part of a universe of suns and moons
and planets. We mark ends and we make beginnings and,
in all, we praise God for the grace and mercy that fill our
days. Then the Scripture is read, Book of Genesis 1:1419:
Listen to the words of the Book of Genesis:
God said: “Let there be lights in the dome of the sky, to
separate day from night. Let them mark the fixed times,
the days and the years, and serve as luminaries in the
dome of the sky, to shed light upon the earth.” And so it
happened: God made the two great lights, the greater
one to govern the day, and the lesser one to govern the
night; and he made the stars. God set them in the dome
of the sky, to shed light upon the earth, to govern the day
and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. God saw how good it was. Evening came, and
morning followed—the fourth day.

The Holy Innocents First Century Feast—
December 28
The Holy Innocents are the young male children from
Bethlehem and its vicinity at the time of the birth of Jesus who were put to death by King Herod the Great.
Herod ordered their death after the Magi who came from
the East to pay homage to the child Jesus left without
giving Herod news about “the newborn king of the Jews.”
This slaughter is recounted in the second chapter of Matthew’s Gospel but is not mentioned in other sources, such
as the writings of the Jewish historian Flavius Josephus.
Estimates of the number of infants killed range from 1012, based on the likely population of Bethlehem at the
time of Christ’s birth, to 64,000, a fantastic figure cited
in the Syrian liturgy. This feast has been celebrated in the
West since the fifth century. The Holy Innocents are the
patrons of children, babies, and foundlings.

más a menudo? ¿Asistes e a misa
todos los domingos? ¿Eres más

son las preguntas que me pregunto y miro a mi vida
espiritual. Si no estás donde te gustaría estar, no te
desanimes y no te detengas en lo mal que están las
cosas. Un nuevo día, un nuevo año está a la vuelta de
la esquina. 2016 puede ser tu oportunidad de
cambio real. Estamos en un año de la misericordia
donde una nueva vida puede suceder. Este año
permite la misericordia de Dios para entrar en la
puerta de tu corazón. Hacer algo más que hacer
resoluciones de algún año nuevo. Los dos sabemos
que eso no funciona. Ahora es el tiempo para una
relación más profunda con Dios, una relación más
profunda con la Iglesia y una relación más profunda
con sus familiares y amigos. Dios te llama a ti y a mí
a ser verdaderamente libre y verdaderamente
abierto a la voluntad de Dios. Pintar un cuadro de
2016 y asegúrese de que estás en la pintura. ¿Que
estás haciendo? Orar? Servir a los pobres y
olvidados? Celebrando la vida? Asistiendo a Misa?
Abrazando un miembro de la familia? Ser
perdonado y perdonar?
Que Dios los bendiga y que 2016 sea un año de paz,
alegría y amor. Que la misericordia de Dios reine en
su corazón y compartir esa misericordia con los
demás. También quiero

oportunidad para darle
las gracias por los
muchos dones y
oraciones para la
Navidad. Realmente es

THÁNH GIA
Suy niệm: Đời sống gia đình của thánh gia
thất dù rất ấm êm hoà thuận vẫn xảy ra sự
cố: Có mỗi một người con, mới mười hai
tuổi, dẫn lên đền thờ Giê-ru-sa-lem chầu
lễ mà cũng để đi lạc. Thực ra, Đức Ma-ri-a
và Thánh Cả Giu-se không phải là những
phụ huynh vụng về thiếu trách nhiệm
trong việc chăm sóc cho con cái. Là bậc làm
cha mẹ, hai ngài có bổn phận nhận ra ý
định của Thiên Chúa nơi Giê-su con mình.
Mà chương trình của Thiên Chúa luôn đi
bước trước và các ngài phải nỗ lực để theo
kịp những đòi hỏi của Thánh ý Thiên Chúa.
Các ngài đã nhận ra rằng ngay cả Con
Thiên Chúa làm người cũng phải luôn tìm
biết thánh ý Chúa để tuân hành: “Cha mẹ
không biết là con có bổn phận ở nhà Cha
con sao ?”
Mời Bạn học hỏi gương thánh gia thất về
cách giải quyết sự cố trong gia đình: - luôn
nhẫn nại, điềm tĩnh, dịu dàng; - biết nhận
ra ý Chúa nơi người thân của mình.

Truyện : Trên chuyến xe đò.
Có một lần trên chuyến xe đò đi Sàigòn,
tôi được nghe mẩu tâm sự vụn giữa mấy
bà mấy cô với nhau. Bà thì than rằng
chồng của mình bê bối. Bà thì bực tức
thấy ông nhà đèo bòng mà chẳng làm gì
được. Nói ra thì xấu thiếp hổ chàng, còn
để vậy thì ấm ức trong lòng. Sau cùng, có
một bà kết luận : chỉ có mấy bà công giáo
là sướng. Đạo của họ cấm chỉ việc lang
bang. Dù sao chăng nữa, thì họ cũng vẫn
một lòng một dạ với nhau.
Nghe mẩu tâm sự ấy, tôi cũng thấy mừng
vì từ xưa và cho đến nay, sự chung thủy,
một vợ một chồng vốn dĩ đã là nét son
của hôn nhân công giáo. Vì ai cũng biết
hôn nhân công giáo là một khế ước song
phương được ký kết giữa hai người nam
và nữ. Do đó, hôn nhân của công giáo có
hai đặc tính là “đơn nhất và vĩnh viễn”.
Không ai có thể hủy bỏ hôn ước khi cả hai
người còn sống vì “Sự gì Thiên Chúa đã
phối hợp, loài người không được phân ly”.

Sách Huấn ca hôm nay dạy con cái phải
thảo kính cha mẹ. Thảo kính cha mẹ
không phải chỉ là một tình cảm tự nhiên
mà còn là ý muốn của Thiên Chúavà
đem lại nhiều ơn ích :- Đền bù các tội
lỗi đã phạm.- Khi cầu xin, sẽ được Thiên
Chúa nhận lời.- Nếu ai hiếu thảo với cha
mẹ thì sau này sẽ dược con cháu thảo
hiếu lại.

Trong thư mục vụ gửi cho tín hữu Colossê
và Eâphêsô, thánh Phaolô rất chú trọng
đến đời sống gia đình. Theo đó, trong
đời sống gia đình phải có những đức tính
như : từ bi, nhân hậu, khiêm cung, ôn
hòa, chịu đựng lẫn nhau và tha thứ cho
nhau. Nhưng muốn thực hiện được các
đức tính trên, cần phải có một nhân đức
nền tảng : đó là đức bác ái yêu thương.
+ Bài Tin mừng: Lc 2,41-52.
Theo lối giải thích của các thầy rabbi thì
dường như luật buộc phải đi hành hương
Giêrusalem mừng lễ Vượt qua hằng năm
chỉ bắt đầu áp dụng lúc 13 tuổi và chỉ
bắt buộc các nam nhân. Lễ Vượt qua kéo
dài 7 ngày, nhưng luật buộc chỉ phải dự
3 ngày đầu thôi. Tuy thế, Đức Maria và
thánh Giuse tham dự cho đến cuối.
Sau kỳ lễ chấm dứt, các Ngài ra về nhưng
Đức Giêsu còn ở lại Giêrusalem. Sau ba
ngày đi tìm Đức Giêsu thì cha mẹ Ngài
mới tìm thấy Con hết sức bỡ ngỡ khi thấy
Con mình đàng ngồi đàm đạo với các tiến
sĩ luật. Được hỏi lý do thì Đức Giêsu chỉ trả
lời với cha mẹ :”Con có bổn phận ở nhà
của Cha Con”. Qua thái độ và lời nói này,
Đức Giêsu muốn chuẩn bị cho cha mẹ
Ngài biết và chấp nhận rằng Ngài còn có
bổn phận đối với Chúa Cha. Tuy thế, Ngài
luôn là người con có hiếu với cha mẹ .
Gia đình chúng ta
a) Người cha trong gia đình.
Người ta nói : Kim chỉ phải có đầu”. Vậy ai
nên làm chủ gia đình ? Đương nhiên là
người cha và người mẹ là hai vai trò quan
trọng nhất. Còn nếu so sánh người cha với
người mẹ thì có lẽ vai trò người cha quan
trọng hơn vì người cha đồng thời cũng là
người chồng; Tại sao vậy ? Vì người cha có
khả năng tốt hơn, có cái nhìn bao quát hơn,
cả trong gia đình lẫn ngoài xã hội, có uy tín
hơn để hướng dẫn các con. Gia đình nào có
người cha tốt thì hầu như mọi sự trong nhà
đều dễ trở nên tốt, vì người cha là cột trụ
cho cả nhà dựa vào, là vị chỉ huy điều khiển
mọi người, là người cầm lái đưa cả gia đình
theo một hướng. Nói thế không phải là một
mình người cha điều khiển gia đình, vẫn có
sự tham gia của người mẹ một cách rất nhẹ
nhàng mà người ta không ngờ. Đôi lúc vì
người cha thiếu khả năng nên người mẹ đã
lấn át vai trò của người cha.
b) Người mẹ trong gia đình.
- Nếu người chồng là rường cột chống đỡ
gia đình, thì người vợ là sợi dây thân ái
ràng buộc mọi người trong yêu thương
hạnh phúc.
- Nếu người chồng là người đứng mũi chịu
sào, đặt kế hoạch, tạo điều kiện kinh tế cho
gia đình, thì người vợ lại là người quản lý tốt,
quán xuyến sắp xếp mọi công việc trong nhà
và bảo vệ tổ ấm gia đình hơn mọi người khác.
- Nếu người chồng là lý trí, là khối óc sáng
suốt để chỉ huy con tầu, thì người vợ chính
là người tài công khéo léo điều động con tầu
đến mục tiêu đã định.
- Nếu người chồng là biểu tượng của quyền
uy, nghiêm nghị và cứng cỏi, là khuôn mẫu,
là kỷ luật, thì người vợ là sự dịu dàng, mềm
mỏng cởi mở để con cái được thoải mái, dễ
chịu trong khuôn khổ gia đình.
- Và sau cùng, nếu cần phải đối phó với một
xã hội, một cuộc sống đa đoan, phức tạp,
muôn mặt, khi sự cứng rắn và sức mạnh của
người chồng không đủ đáp ứng, thì đã có sự
khôn ngoan, tế nhị, mềm mỏng của người
vợ bổ sung vào để đạt được kết quả.
c) Con cái trong gia đình.
Đức Giêsu tuy là Thiên Chúa, nhưng với
cương vị làm con, Ngài vẫn phải vâng phục
thánh Giuse và Đức Maria với tâm tình
con thảo. Hiếu thảo đối với cha mẹ không
phải là một tình cảm tự nhiên mà còn là
một điều luật của Chúa:”Ngươi phải hiếu
thảo với cha mẹ, như Thiên Chúa ngươi đã
truyền dạy, để được sống lâu và được hạnh
phúc trên phần đất Thiên Chúa dành cho
ngươi”(Đnl 5,16).
