Greetings,
Have you ever been in a situation
where you thought you deserved
preferential treatment? Sometimes we pay for it. Going first
class on an airplane or dining at a
Fr. John Henderson
5 star restaurant. Sometimes it is our name or what
we have or what we do. “Do you know who I am?”
There are people who build their whole life on the
false belief that they deserve preferential treatment
over others. This is the real reason the people of Nazareth were upset with Jesus. They felt that since Jesus is from their hometown they would get special
treatment.
I came across this quote that fits well: “Jesus is telling the hometown folks that in the eyes of God, everyone is special, everyone is unique, everyone has
sacred worth, everyone is gifted, graced, and loved
by God.” God loves you, rich and poor, beautiful and
scarred, tall and short, skinny and fat. God loves you,
priest and married couple, religious and single person. God loves you, lawyer and doctor, farmer and
teacher. If you think you will receive preferential
treatment by our Lord over anyone else then you will
be so disappointed. However if you just let the Lord
love you then you will be greatly blessed.

FAITH FORMATON
LENT BEGINS SOON
We are called by Jesus to do penance. The Bishops of our
time echo that call by requiring us to fast on ASH
WEDNESDAY and GOOD FRIDAY (if we are able) from
our 18th birthday until our 59th birthday. Fasting means
limiting ourselves to one full meal a day. The other two
meals should be lighter then they normally would be. Eating between meals is to be avoided. Catholics who are 14
years old and over are required to give up meat on those
days and all the Fridays of Lent as well.
YEAR OF MERCY
Set your calendars for 24 hours of prayer for the Lord on
March 4th beginning at 6:00pm with the Stations of the
Cross. The Church will be open all night and all day Saturday until the 5:00pm Mass on March 5th. During Friday
night and all day on Saturday there will be Adoration of the
Blessed Sacrament, various prayer services, and programs
set up in Francis Hall. The parish gathering space will be
open all night. There will be coffee and refreshments. There
will also be confessions. Not only that, but all of the parishes in our area will be opened as well. You can make a
pilgrimage to different parishes to spend time in prayer.

PASTORAL COUNCIL & COMMISSION REPORTS
Pastoral Council Meeting Minutes: Summary for January 5, 2016 Meeting
Attendees: Diane, Cathy, Veronica, Toni, Oscar, Truc, Linda, Dale, Leslie, Carrie, Kevin, Fr Julio, Fr John
Visitors: Kevin Watkins, Carol Herron, Sue Stephens
The Council has a webpage with pictures and bios and the same pictures are being composed into a display
to be mounted on the wall in the hall leading to the parish center.
Kevin Watkins presented the charter for the Faith Formation Commission. The next step is to increase
membership on the commission.
Carol Herron and Sue Stephens gave an update on the new day center efforts of the Just Compassion
group. Several churches in Tigard are working together to provide services to the homeless in the community. The day center will start one day a week, Thursday’s, at the Four Square Church on Pacific Hwy,
from 10 am to 2 pm. They are looking for volunteers to help with this program. It is a separate program
from the Severe Weather Shelter hosted by St Anthony Church.
We discussed the success of the celebration for Our Lady of Guadalupe and thanked Fr Julio for helping
coordinate the event.
The Christmas Masses were well attended, some very crowded, and the overlapping masses on Christmas
eve for the Hispanic and Vietnamese communities went smoothly.
Tet New Year celebration will be Feb 6 from 2 pm to 10 pm. All are invited to attend the celebration.
Fr Manuel is working on updates to the website and one update will be the inclement weather policy.
Next meeting is Feb 2, 2016 at 7 pm.
The Faith Formation Commission met on January 21st.
Attendees included Donna, Susie, Mary, Gerlinde, and Kevin. Main points of the meeting are as follows:
•
The CHARTER for the Faith Formation Commission was presented to the Pastoral Council at its January 5th meeting; the Council expressed general consensus for the CHARTER. The Commission will now
use the CHARTER as a guide for its actions and decisions.
• The Commission will conduct a survey of Parish members regarding upcoming faith formation programs. The survey is planned for early April and will be conducted via an “online” system as well as individual discussions.
• Commission members will meet with selected Committees (e.g., Youth Ministry) in order to identify
needs, issues, and concerns for upcoming faith formation programs.
•
The next Commission meeting is scheduled for March 17th and all are welcome.
Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal
Most past contributors to the Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal have received a mailing from Archbishop
Sample within the past few days. At all Masses next weekend, additional information will be provided in
the bulletin insert. Appeal funds are used to help fund Archdiocesan offices and agencies that assist the
parishes and their people. In addition, part of the funds are used to assist retired archdiocesan priests and
seminarian education. The theme of the 2016 Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal is “Teach, Bless, Serve.”
As you consider the amount you can pledge to help these ministries, please reflect on the following: Contributing to the Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal is one concrete way to “Teach, Bless, Serve”. Take a moment to honestly examine all the God-given blessings in your life and then ask not yourself, but ask God:
“What is just?” By our baptism and our confirmation in the Catholic church, each of us is called to serve as
a good shepherd. We’re called not only to follow Christ but to be Christ. Please pray for the Lord’s guidance as you consider the above reflections, and please give generously according to the blessings God has

Taste of Tanzania
Women in the Word
The Taste of Tanzania dinner, benefits the Huruma School for children with disabilities in
Mwanza, Tanzania. The Huruma Chapter KILEO, a
nonprofit in the Portland area, invites the public to
the St. Anthony Community Center at 9905 SW
McKenzie St in Tigard, at 6 PM, February 20, 2016.
An exotic buffet dinner includes special Tanzanian
dishes and snacks. Dramatic entertainment will
have everyone singing and dancing to rousing African music and drumming. A silent auction includes
Tanzanian handicrafts and a weekend at the Oregon Coast. A raffle offers a handmade quilt in African prints sent by a Tanzanian family. Artwork and
treasures collected from Tanzania will also be on

"¿Sabes quién soy?" Hay gente que construye
toda su vida en la falsa creencia de que se
merecen un trato preferencial sobre los demás.
Esta es la verdadera razón por lo que la gente de
Nazaret estaban molestos con Jesús. A su juicio,
ya que Jesús es de su ciudad natal que obtendrían
un trato especial.
Me encontré con esta cita que encaja muy bien:
"Jesús está diciendo a la gente de la ciudad natal
que a los ojos de Dios, todo el mundo es especial,
cada uno es único, todo el mundo tiene valor
sagrado, todo el mundo está dotado, honrado y
amado por Dios." Dios lo ama a usted, ricos y
pobres, hermosa y llena de cicatrices, alto y bajo,
flaco y gordo. Dios te ama, sacerdote y pareja de
casados, religiosos y persona sola. Dios te ama,
abogado y médico, agricultor y profesor. Si usted
cree que va a recibir un trato preferencial por
nuestro Señor sobre cualquier otra persona,
entonces usted será muy decepcionado. Sin
embargo, si usted deja que el Señor te ama
entonces usted será grandemente bendecido.

San Juan Bosco. En 1815 nació en Piamonte (Italia).
A los dieciséis años, ingresó en el seminario de Chieri y
era tan pobre, que debía mendigar para reunir el dinero
y los vestidos indispensables. Después de haber recibido
el diaconado, Juan Bosco pasó al seminario mayor de
Turín y ahí empezó, con la aprobación de sus
superiores, a reunir todos los domingos a un grupo de
chiquillos abandonados de la ciudad en una especie de
escuela y lugar de recreo al que llamó "Oratorio
Festivo".Don Bosco realizó uno de sus sueños al enviar
sus primeros misioneros a la Patagonia. Poco a poco los
salesianos se extendieron por toda América del Sur.
Tenían 36 casas en el Nuevo Mundo y 38 en Europa.

HẰNG SỐNG
Suy niệm: Nhà bác học lỗi lạc nhất của
thế kỷ 20 là A. Einstein thú nhận: “Khi
còn bé, tôi đã học cả Kinh Thánh và sách
Talmud. Là người Do Thái, nhưng tôi đã
bị khuôn mặt sáng ngời của Đức Giê-su
Na-da-rét mê hoặc... Chưa ai đọc các sách
Tin Mừng mà không cảm thấy sự hiện diện
thật sự của Đức Giê-su. Tính cách của Ngài
rung lên trong mỗi từ ngữ. Một đời sống
như vậy không huyền thoại nào chứa hết
được.” Trước Einstein 20 thế kỷ, dân làng
Na-da-rét cũng bị mê hoặc bởi những lời
hay ý đẹp thốt ra từ miệng Người như vậy.
Đó không chỉ là lời khôn ngoan của bậc vĩ
nhân, mà còn là Lời hằng sống, là Ngôi Lời
Thiên Chúa, là “Ngôi Lời đã trở nên người
phàm và cư ngụ giữa chúng ta” (Ga 1,14).
Mời Bạn: “Đức Giê-su là một bậc thầy
nghệ thuật không ai bì kịp về khả năng
phơi bày cái cốt lõi thâm sâu của chân lý
tinh thần” (G. Vermes). Ngài không chỉ nói
những lời hay ý đẹp, nhưng còn có thể giúp
bạn nhận thức chân lý mang tính sinh tử
cho đời mình. Bạn hãy đọc và nghiền ngẫm

Sống Lời Chúa: Trong năm mới cũng là
Năm Thánh này, tôi sẽ dành thời gian mỗi
ngày đọc một đoạn Tin Mừng nhằm giúp
mình hiểu biết và yêu mến Chúa Ki-tô hơn.
Cầu nguyện: Lạy Chúa Giê-su, con thán
phục lời hay ý đẹp từ miệng Chúa như
bao người khác. Thế nhưng, nhiều khi nại
cớ bận rộn công việc mỗi ngày, con ngại
ngùng khi phải dành thời gian đọc và suy
gẫm Lời Chúa. Kế hoạch sống của con trong
năm nay là có thời giờ tiếp cận Lời Chúa
hằng ngày. Amen.

Giêrêmia là một trong những tiên tri lôi
cuốn nhất. Tính ôn hòa và nhạy cảm của
ông không thích hợp để trở thành tiên
tri đối với một xã hội suy đồi. Trước sự
chống đối và bắt bớ, ông vẫn tin tưởng
vào sự trợ giúp của Chúa nên ông không
hề nao núng. Tiên tri Giêrêmia chính là
hình ảnh của người Kitô hữu.

Trong đoạn thư gửi cho tín hữu Corintô,
thánh Phaolô khẳng định sự cao trọng
của đức Mến. Chúa ban cho Kitô hữu
nhiều ơn riêng để họ góp phần xây dựng
cộng đoàn, nhưng đức Mến vẫn là cao
trọng hơn cả.Đức Mến làm cho các ơn
khác có giá trị, bởi lẽ nếu không có đức
mến thì những ơn khác chỉ là hư không.

cử hành vào Chúa Nhật 7/2/2106 lúc 1:30

và múa lân tại Hội trường giáo xứ.
• Thánh lễ và Văn nghệ Mừng Xuân Bính
Thân tại Đại Chủng Viện Mt. Angels sẽ
được cử hành vào lúc 10 giờ sáng Thứ Bẩy,
ngày 13/2/2016. Cha quản nhiệm sẽ chủ tế
và ca đoàn Hương Chiều sẽ phụ trách phần
Thánh Ca trong thánh lễ. Xin cộng đoàn sắp
xếp tham dự để ủng hộ các Cha và các Thầy.
Hãy nhớ lại lời Chúa:”Không tiên tri nào
được kính trọng nơi quê hương mình”. Số
phận của tiên tri là thế đó. Làm tiên tri
không phải là chuyện dễ. Phức tạp lắm !
Một đàng phải nói lời Chúa một cách trung
thực, một đàng lời Chúa không mấy êm tai
dễ nghe vì vạch những cái xấu của họ ra.
Nhưng đã là tiên tri thì phải nói lời Chúa và
đồng thời cũng phải nhận những đau khổ
màø người nghe dành cho kẻ làm tiên tri.
Chính Đức Giêsu đã nêu gương cho chúng
ta trước. Ngài từng bảo các môn đệ:”Nếu
thế gian ghét các con, thì hãy nhớ rằng họ
đã ghét Thầy trước … Bất cứ ai sống đúng
là Kitô hữu sẽ hiểu được những lời nói trên
chân thực thế nào.
Làm tiên tri nhiều khi phải lội ngược dòng,
không thể sống theo phong trào, sống
theo dư luận hay theo chủ trương của một
số người nào, mà phải sống theo chân lý,
sống theo lời Chúa qua Sách Thánh hay
qua lời giáo huấn của Giáo hội. Chính cách
sống như thế làm cho người làm tiên tri
cảm thấy lẻ loi, lạc lõng và đau khổ giữa
những người khác. Có những người không
dám tuyên xưng đức tin như không dám
làm dấu thánh giá trong quán cơm, trong
sở làm. Có người không dám khước từ để
không đến những nơi gặp dịp tội như sòng

mừng Chúa nhật tuần trước nói về những
hoạt động của Đức Giêsu tại quê hương
Nazareth của mình. Ta thấy có ba ý chính :
- Ngày sabat, Đức Giêsu vào hội đường
Nazareth đọc Sách Thánh. Nhân dịp này,
Ngài tuyện bố lời tiên tri Isaia cách đó 8
thế kỷ mà Ngài mới đọc, được áp dụng
vào chính Ngài, và Ngài công bố sứ mạng
của Ngài là mang Tin mừng và ơn cứu độ
cho những người nghèo khổ.
- Dựa trên lời đồn thổi về Ngài, người
đồng hương hy vọng Ngài sẽ ưu tiên làm
nhiều phép lạ tại quê hương, nhưng đã
bị từ chối, bởi vì Ngài là Đấng cứu độ của
mọi người chứ không phải của riêng ai .
- Thất vọng vì sự từ chối của Đức Giêsu,
họ tức giận và trục xuất Ngài khỏi thành,
đưa Ngài lên đồi cao để xô xuống vực.
Điều này hé mở cho ta thấy bóng dáng
ngọn đồi Golgotha, nơi họ sẽ giết Ngài,
như cha ông họ đã từng giết các tiên tri.

không dám giữ mình trong tiệc vui giữa
những bạn đang “quậy” tứ tung…
Người làm tiên tri cũng đừng đòi Chúa làm
phép lạ khi gặp sự khó khăn. Chúng ta muốn
có một Thiên Chúa tỏ mình ra thêm chút
nữa, một Thiên Chúa giải quyết những vấn
đề của chúng ta thay cho chúng ta. Vả lại,
Thiên Chúa không thích vai trò mà chúng ta
ép Ngài làm. Thiên Chúa không thích điều
ngoại lệ, kỳ diệu và ly kỳ… Khi Ngài chữa
lành một người mù không phải để làm cho
chúng ta kinh ngạc mà để ám chỉ cho chúng
ta biết rằng Ngài muốn chữa sự mù lòa vốn
có của tất cả chúng ta. Khi chữa lành một
người bị liệt nằm trên cáng, vì Ngài muốn
chữa lành mọi người chúng ta khỏi bệnh liệt
còn nặng hơn nhiều là tội lỗi chúng ta. Điều
đó được nói rõ ràng trong Tin mừng
Chúng ta là Kitô hữu được kêu gọi làm tiên
tri của Chúa Cha cho thời đại chúng ta, cũng
như Đức Giêsu từng là tiên tri của Chúa Cha
cho thời đại của Ngài. Đây chính là sứ vụ mà
chúng ta lãnh nhận khi chịu phép rửa tội
và thêm sức. Chúng ta hãy lặp lại lời thánh
Phaolô:”Người Kitô hữu chúng ta được Chúa
kêu gọi để tỏa sáng như các vì sao giữa lòng
thế giới tối tăm này”(Pl 2,15).
