PASTOR’S CORNER
Greetings,
Amazing grace! How sweet the
sound
that saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost, but now I’m
found; Was blind, but now I
Fr. John Henderson
see. There are so many people
that can see, 20/20 vision, perhaps even better,
yet are totally blind. They are totally wrapped up
in their own world, selfish, mean, angry. They
spend their time searching for the faults of others. They have no mercy for others when they
are hurt. They avoid any change that comes
their way.
We are called this day to open our hearts to
amazing grace. God loves you and me with an
everlasting love. This grace is rubbed on our
eyes and on our hearts. We are called to go wash
in the baptismal waters of forgiveness, of true
love. It is amazing how God’s grace can change
hearts and open eyes.
But we must recognize that we are lost, that we
are buried in our sins that keep us from truly
seeing. We are blind. We need to focus on our
own lives and want to change and want to live
new lives and especially have the desire to accept Jesus’ invitation to be in relationship with
him. Without the Lord’s divine mercy there can
be no change. Sometimes we say, “I can change
on my own, I do not need anyone’s help or guidance.” Good luck. That only leads to frustration
and broken promises.
Dear Jesus, I am a wretch, I am lost, I am blind.
Pour your amazing grace upon me so that I can
be found, so that I can see. I want to believe in
you Lord. I want to embrace your mercy and
your everlasting love.
Have a great week,
LEADERSHIP

St. Anthony Music ministry is looking for
your help. We are trying to grow our music
ministries and can’t do it without you. We have
some specific task that might fit your desire,
schedule, and skill set. If now is not the time,
please keep us in your prayers and keep singing.
5PM Vigil: We are currently taking auditions
for singers and instrumentalists. We rehearse on Monday nights from 7-8:30PM and
arrive at 4:00PM on Saturdays to set up.
8:30AM Mass: We are in need of sopranos.
In other words, we really need more female
voices to sing the melody. We rehearse on
Wednesday nights from 7-8:30PM and arrive
at 8AM on Sundays to set up.
11AM Mass: We are currently taking auditions for singers and a bass player. We are also
looking for someone to operate our sound system. We rehearse on Monday nights from 78:30PM and arrive at 10 AM on Sundays to set
up.
Music ministry is a wonderful place serve the
community while building your faith in fellowship. Please contact Nichlas Schaal for more
questions. [email protected].

YOUTH MINISTRY
Saint Anthony’s Life
Teen is a ministry open
to all high school students. We meet Sundays
at 5:00, starting with
dinner, and
ending at 6:45 before
Mass. Newcomers and
visitors are always welcome—just walk in the
door, write down a few
pieces of information, and join the celebration!
PARISH SCHOOL
St. Anthony recently teamed up with the Portland Reading
Council and sponsored a dyslexia workshop in Francis
Hall. The focus was (1) understanding the neurological
basis of dyslexia, (2) recognizing the most common warning signs and symptoms, (3) learning to support students
through accommodations; and (4) inspiring students to
shine.
This week at Life Night:
Filled First
Just as we need to be merciful, we also need to
receive Mercy. Pride, shame, and doubt can
make us embarrassed or unwilling to receive
Mercy. Giving and receiving Mercy both bring
God’s presence to our lives.
Family Challenge: As a family, make a list of
times you have received Mercy. Then make a
list of times your have turned Mercy away. Talk
about the differences and what decisions you
would make now. Are you allowing God to show
you His love and Mercy through His
people?
Summer Mission Trip
Our week-long summer Mission to
Reno, NV is an experience you’ll
never forget, taking place the first
week in July.

Research has shown that nationwide dyslexia is the leading
cause of reading failure and school dropouts. 1 in 5 students have dyslexia. Kindergarten assessments are vital
not necessarily for the detection of dyslexia but for an
overall assessment of the child. Early intervention is essential.
Of the 8 St. Anthony teachers and staff that attended this
workshop, 3 teachers attended a second dyslexia workshop
the next day featuring Susan Barton, nationally known
expert in the field of dyslexia. Sarah Paul, the school’s
Reading Resource Teacher, uses the Susan Barton system
of assessing students. We are truly blessed by caring,
compassionate teachers who seek out ways to help every
student be successful.

We continue to search for opportunities to introduce fair trade goods to parishioners. A consignment sale at next
year’s holiday bazaar through CRS fair trade program is a possibility.
Several Rice Bowls were handed out on Ash Wednesday. Information is posted on the parish web site. We will
keep interest going using the bulletin.
Reports on homelessness in Washington County were presented: The growing lack of affordable housing is
blamed for increasing rates of homelessness. Portland has become a magnet for those seeking a livable city.
Outside interests are buying apartment complexes and looking for a high return on their investments, which
is driving up rents in the metro area. Union Gospel Mission has an 80% success rate in obtaining housing for
its clients. We may explore how they are accomplishing this. The application for Section 8 Housing is
lengthy and complicated and there is a one year waiting list. We hope to offer a tenant workshop in the near
future.
The Bread for the World 2016 Offering of Letters focus is Survive and Thrive – hunger relief and nutrition for
mothers, infants and young children. We will encourage parishioners to write letters to their elected representatives on this topic at fellowship after Masses through Pentecost.
The Traveling Crib should be here by Feb. 18. Information is in the bulletin.
We will review options for a possible web page at the next meeting.
Commission members are reading “Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship” USCCB 2015.
The next Life, Justice & Peace meeting is Thursday, March 10 at 7 p.m. in the parish library.

What is Mercy?
9:45—10:45 am in the
Middle School
Acts of Mercy: Don’t forget did you bring food for the pantry, help a neighbor, take care of an animal—
animal—write it down
on a piece of paper and bring it with you to mass. Put it in
the offering basket and on Divine Mercy Sunday April 3rd
we will offer all our Acts of Mercy as an offering to the Lord.
LIFE PEACE AND JUSTICE
SỰ SỐNG, CÔNG LÝ, VÀ HÒA BÌNH
VIDA, PAZ Y JUSTICO
Pope Francis writes in Misericordiae Vultus—the
papal bull that announced this Jubilee Year of
Mercy— that he desires that Christian people everywhere more deeply reflect on the corporal and
spiritual works of mercy. The pope views this year
as an opportunity to “reawaken our conscience,
too often grown dull in the face of poverty.” He
challenges us to “enter more deeply into the heart
of the Gospel where the poor have a special experience of God’s mercy.”
Lent is a time to reflect more intentionally on
Pope Francis’ invitation. During these 40 days, we
examine our own lives in an ongoing effort to “be
merciful, just as [the] Father is merciful.” And
CRS Rice Bowl is our tool to do just this. Through
CRS Rice Bowl, we encounter those living in conditions of poverty around the world, and we have
the opportunity to practice the corporal and spiritual works of mercy through our prayer, fasting
and almsgiving. Joan Rosenhauer, Executive Vice
President of CRS’ U.S. Operations, shares her
thoughts in this reflection.
Make your Lenten practice this year one of mercy.
• Faith-Sharing: Use this adult faith-sharing
resource, Live Mercy: Feed the Hungry, to
inspire reflection on the scope of global hunger
and how we are called to respond in mercy.
• Gospel Reflections: Consider how the Gospel of the Word each Sunday can inspire you
and your community to live mercy throughout
the week with these Reflections on Sunday’s Readings.
• Lives of the Saints: Contemplate God’s
mercy throughout our Catholic tradition by
reflecting on the Lives of the Saints who
have gone before us.
• Digital Retreat: Hear from Kerry Weber
of America Magazine on how mercy is integral
to each of our Lenten journeys—and how it’s a
lot like riding a bus—on this episode of What
is Lent?

Window into Divine Mercy
The mission of St. Faustina brought us new
forms of devotion to the Divine Mercy. These
new forms consist of the image of Divine Mercy
with the signature “Jesus I trust in You” (in our
adoration chapel), the Feast of Divine Mercy
established on the Sunday after Easter, the
chaplet of Divine Mercy, and prayer at the hour
of Jesus' death. These forms of devotion carry
great promises with them. They are all built on
a foundation of trust in Jesus which is the essence of the devotion and our obligation to actively love our neighbor by being merciful.
Trust is not a feeling. We gain trust and it expresses itself in humility, contrition expressed
in the sacrament of reconciliation, obedience to
God, receiving the Eucharist, and meditation
on the passion of Christ. The world so often
offers us lies, but in being obedient to the
Church our trust in Jesus grows. Jesus made
Himself dependent on our trust in order to give
us all we need.

Saludos,
Gracia maravillosa! ¿Que suena
tan dulce
que salvó a un miserable como yo.
Una vez estaba perdido, pero
ahora he sido encontrado;
Estaba ciego, pero ahora veo.
Fr. John Henderson
A veces decimos,
"yo puedo cambiar por mi cuenta, no necesito ayuda
o guía de alguien." Buena suerte. Que sólo conduce a
la frustración y promesas vacías.
Querido Jesús, yo soy un miserable, estoy perdido,
estoy ciego.
Quiero abrazar tu
misericordia y tu amor eterno.
Que tengas una buena
semana,
Tu amigo,
Fr. John

Lời Chúa qua các bài đọc lễ Chúa Nhật
+ Bài đọc 1 : Gs 5,9-12.
Trong 40 năm trên đường về Đất Hứa,
Thiên Chúa đã nuôi dưỡng dân Do thái
dân Do thái luôn nhớ đến lòng thương
: tôn trọng tự do của con, sẵn sàng chia
con cả chỉ người Do thái, con hoang đàng
kêu mời trở lại, chúng ta hãy can đảm nhận
Fourth Sunday of Lent
(Year A)
Light of the World
Almighty and ever-living God,
you sent your Son, the Light of the World,
to conquer darkness and save us from
sin and death.
Show us mercy, Lord,
and heal the blind spots that trap us
in darkness
so that we might live as children of the light.
May your Holy Spirit be the beacon that
guides us to your Son
and strengthens our resolve
to be faithful witnesses to his saving power.
Wake our sleeping hearts
so that your Church may always confess
Jesus as the light that gives life.
And like the man born blind,
may we worship you all the days of our lives.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Man Born Blind
Today’s Readings: 1 Samuel 16:1b, 6–7, 10–13a; Psalm
23:1–3a, 3b–4, 5, 6; Ephesians 5:8–14; John 9:1–41. Today
we celebrate the Second Scrutiny and hear the story of the
man born blind. The story illuminates what happens to the
elect and to all of us. When we encounter Christ, we move
from darkness into light, from spiritual blindness to professing
Christ as Lord. Pay attention to this dichotomy throughout
the reading. In the scrutiny, the elect, as well as the whole
assembly, call to mind the darkness of their lives. Naming
these sins sheds light upon them and frees the elect to be
healed and frees us to commit to the way of the Gospel.
Consider the story of the man born blind. It reveals this
man’s movement from blindness to sight and from just
knowing the name of Jesus to boldly professing that Jesus is
from God. His encounter with Jesus revealed God’s mercy
and love, and his faith was illuminated. The opposite is true
of the community leaders, the Pharisees. As religious leaders, they were supposed to have deep faith and religious
insight, but at the end of the story, they remain in darkness.
During this fourth week of Lent, ask the Holy Spirit to open
your eyes so you might see Christ more clearly. Ask the
Holy Spirit to heal the darkness of your heart and mind, and
then consider how you might, like the man born blind, share
the Light of the World with all those who remain in the
dark. May our encounter with Christ bring us to a deeper
faith and allow us to see the world, the poor, and the broken
as he would.

Optional Memorial of Sts. Perpetua
and Felicity, Martyrs
Sts. Perpetua and Felicity were martyred around the year 203
because they refused to renounce their faith in Christ. Their
encounter with the Risen Christ changed and saved them;
their love for Christ was so strong they couldn’t imagine
denying him. How do you praise the Lord for rescuing you?
In memory of the martyrdom of these saints, you might want
to consider making hot cross buns sometime this week.
Today’s Readings: Isaiah 65:17–21; Psalm 30:2 and 4, 5–6,
11–12a and 13b; John 4:43–54.

Waters of Salvation
The sacred river in this passage from Ezekiel brings new life
to the wilderness of Judah. During the Easter season, we sing
a verse from this passage to remind us that we have been
restored to life in our Baptism into Christ. We are about
halfway through Lent. What in your desert needs the waters
of salvation? One of the corporal works of mercy is visiting
the sick. Do you have sick friends or family who might
be cheered by a visit from you? Today’s Readings: Ezekiel
47:1–9, 12; Psalm 46:2–3, 5–6, 8–9; John 5:1–16.
Wednesday, March 9, 2016
Restore
While in captivity, Israel had lost hope and thought God had
abandoned them, but Isaiah reassures them that is not the
case and God will save the prisoners and restore Zion to its
glory. We too can find ourselves in exile and hopeless. We
need Jesus to restore us and to trust that God will never forget us. From today’s First Reading, we may want to consider
the corporal work of mercy, visiting the imprisoned. Whom
do you know that needs to be reassured of God’s promise?
Today’s Readings: Isaiah 49:8–15; Psalm 145:8–9, 13cd–14,
17–18; John 5:17–30.

Idols
When the Israelites turn away from God and build an idol
to worship, Moses implores the Lord not to unleash his
wrath. Today we are invited to think about the idols in our
lives that keep us from seeing or trusting God. What causes
you to turn away from God? How might you invite others to
remember they are God’s chosen ones? Find a painting online
or at a museum that depicts the First Reading and meditate
on the image and Scripture passage. Today’s Readings:
Exodus 32:7–14; Psalm 106:19–20, 21–22, 23; John 5:31–47.

Messiah
John’s Gospel account gives the impression that Jesus has
stirred things up. Again, we hear that “they” are trying to kill
him. Near the end of the passage, Jesus identifies himself
with the Father, which indicates he is the Messiah. The
people of Jerusalem knew his origins and so doubted that
he was the Messiah. Jesus affirms that his authority comes
from God. The tone in the Gospel narrative is beginning to
shift more clearly toward the Passion. You may want to consider attending the Stations of the Cross as one of your
Lenten disciplines. Today’s Readings: Wisdom 2:1a, 12–22;
Psalm 34:17–18, 19–20, 21 and 23; John 7:1–2, 10, 25–30.
Saturday, March 12, 2016
Messiah, Take 2
The Gospel today continues yesterday’s theme. As we draw
closer to the celebration of the Triduum, the Jesus of John’s
Gospel asserts that he was sent by God and is obedient to
God’s will. Like Jesus, we too can be pursued or falsely
accused; and so like the psalmist, we seek refuge with our
God. These pericopes from John’s Gospel account can be
hard to grapple with. Try reading all of chapters 7 and 8.
Then place yourself in the story. Which character(s) do you
identify with? How would you react to Jesus? Today’s
Readings: Jeremiah 11:18–20; Psalm 7:2–3, 9bc–10, 11–12;
John 7:40–53.

Meet Sister Karen Gosser, SHCJ
a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church
I'm honored to share with you my parishioners who I am and what I as a Catholic sister
do among God's people here in Oregon.
In the 60's, when Kennedy was president I heard him say "ask not what your country can
do for you, but ask what can you do for your country". For me that said something like,
"what can you do for your Church" or the people of God? I had thoughts of being a
sister but in my high school years imagined myself marrying my Jesuit High School
boyfriend and together we would be involved in service work. But during my high school
retreat, led by a Holy Child sister who had returned from missionary work in Nigeria, I
found myself inspired by her joy and enthusiasm of being "generous with God". Well,
God got me thinking and praying. I had that sense that God wanted me to live out the
Gospel call to follow him by leaving all (family, Portland, friends, etc.) and so I entered
the Society of the Holy Child Jesus.
As a Sister of the Holy Child Jesus, it's been my privilege to have taught in high schools,
served as a campus minister at Catholic University, worked as a counselor, served as
novice director and served on our Society Leadership Team in Rome. I was blessed to be
allowed to come back to Oregon when my parents were aging. Currently, God has led
me to work with the Native American Rehabilitation Association (NARA) as a mental
health therapist with men, women and children in a long term, intensive residential
alcohol & drug treatment program.
I am happy to be right here where Jesus would be, reflecting the compassionate and
challenging love of our God.

National Catholic Sisters Week
March 8-14
Celebrating women religious as they…
serve God through a diversity of ministries. Some live cloistered lives in contemplative prayer, while others
work on the frontlines of global change, striving to improve various aspects of society, from environmental
change to healthcare reform to human rights issues to education and more. All find ways to make the
world a better place. They may have had a positive impact in your life through their work in your
community, even if you didn’t know they were women religious. We invite you to learn more and get to
know the sisters near you!
Did you know that…
