Administrator’s Corner Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time, January 31, 2016 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The central theme of today’s readings is courage. We should have and show the courage of our Christian convictions in our faith and practices in our communities, even when we face hatred and rejection because of our Christian faith. The First Reading tells us how God called Jeremiah as his prophet and equipped him to face opposition and rejection. In his prophetic vocation, which he lived out while encountering rejection and persecution, Jeremiah anticipated Jesus, the greatest of all prophets. In the Second Reading, we hear St. Paul speaking with the courage of his convictions as he corrects the Corinthian Christian Community, wherein the exercise of God’s gift was causing competition, jealousy, and divisiveness. He courageously presents them a “way” which surpasses all others, namely, the way of love, and instructs them to exercise their gifts with love. Today’s Gospel is a continuation of last Sunday’s gospel presenting Jesus’ own townspeople’s reaction to his “Inaugural Address” at the synagogue of Nazareth. The passage shows us how Jesus faced skepticism and criticism with prophetic courage. Jeremiah, Paul, and Jesus believed that they were commissioned by God to proclaim a disturbing prophetic message. No matter how strong the opposition, the three had the conviction that God was with them. Reflecting on Readings, we may face rejection with prophetic courage and optimism. Perhaps we have experienced the pain of rejection, betrayal, abandonment, violated trust, neglect or abuse, even from friends and family members, when we reach out to them as God’s agents of healing and saving grace. Perhaps we ourselves are guilty of such rejection. Perhaps we, too, have been guilty of ignoring or humiliating people with our arrogance and prejudice. May we learn to correct our mistakes and face rejection from others with courage! Please join us at St. Columban Church, this coming Saturday, 2/6, 10:00 am - 11:30 am, for the World Day of Mass for the Sick in honor of the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. Please join with Vietnamese at 6:30 pm, Monday, 2/8, for the Thanksgiving Mass on the First Day of the Lunar New Year of Monkey. Please read on page 8 for our Upcoming Events for the Lenten Season, starting on Ash Wednesday, 2/10/2016. Fr. Bao EXTRAORDINARY JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY www.rcbo.org/year-of-mercy/ or www.im.va/content/gdm/en.html Message of His Holiness Pope Francis for the Celebration of the XLIX World Day Of Peace - 1 January 2016 Continuation from last week… [7] Indeed, the information glut can numb people’s sensibilities and to some degree downplay the gravity of the problems. There are those who “simply content themselves with blaming the poor and the poor countries themselves for their troubles; indulging in unwarranted generalizations; they claim that the solution is an ‘education’ that would tranquilize them, making them tame and harmless. All this becomes even more exasperating for the marginalized in the light of the widespread and deeply rooted corruption found in many countries - in their governments, businesses and institutions - whatever the political ideology of their leaders.” [8] In other cases, indifference shows itself in lack of concern for what is happening around us, especially if it does not touch us directly. Some people prefer not to ask questions or seek answers; they lead lives of comfort, deaf to the cry of those who suffer. Almost imperceptibly, we grow incapable of feeling compassion for others and for their problems; we have no interest in caring for them, as if their troubles were their own responsibility, and none of our business.
