MISSION STATEMENT
We are a Parish Community
of men and women who serve God,
our country and one another.
Inspired by St. Bernard’s love
of God and humanity,
we proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ by
praying and worshipping together,
educating one another in faith,
providing assistance for those in need,
working for justice in the world, and
welcoming all to the sacramental life of the Church
in the Roman Catholic tradition.
With Faith, Hope, and Love, we dedicate ourselves to the mission of
living and sharing
the Good News of Jesus Christ in the world.

Decisions, Decisions
Ministries Appeal Update
Last weekend we had the brief
pleasure of meeting Ronnie
Tear, the new volunteer
coordinator of the Catholic
Ministries Appeal for St.
Bernard’s, and John Gatto who
gave us some very down to
earth examples of where our
contributions go. (If you were
at the 5:30 Mass, you didn’t
meet them.)I already made my
pledge (and actually paid it off
already) and if you received the
Ministries Appeal envelope in
the mail, please make your
pledge this week. If you didn’t
get an envelope, extra pledge
cards are available in the
church. We are already 60%
toward our goal so thank you to
everyone who has made a
pledge this year. Remember that
once we reach goal, the parish
receives funds back and that
helps to pay a lot of bills here.
Sad News
We are sorry to announce that
Father Joe’s cat, who was
named “Joy”, died this past
week. She was 17 years old and
with Father Joe, we
mourn her loss.
One
of the challenging things about being a new pastor anywhere is that
people ask you to make lots of decisions -- often about little things. And the
challenge lies in not really knowing the consequences of your choices. In one
parish, on my first Sunday, one of the ushers asked me, “Father, do you want
the altar candles lit before Mass?” My first reaction was, “Well of course! Why wouldn’t we light the candles?” But luckily the Holy Spirit stopped me
from saying that and instead I found myself saying, “I’m not sure why you are
asking me this.” Then the usher explained that there was a tradition of a
family coming up to light the altar candle during the presentation of the gifts. Now if I had just said, “Yes I want the candles lit before Mass,” people would
have said: “O look...the first thing he does when gets here is to do away with
the family candle light tradition.”
So as Father Joe and I are asked about many Holy Week decisions, we’ll try
hard to make choices in the context of the traditions of St. Bernard’s
parish. But since neither of is have been here before, we might be making
choices that represent changes to you. And sometimes that’s good. There is a
fresh beginning that people like. And sometimes that’s bad -- people miss
something that was familiar.
When faced with a decision about the liturgies of Holy Week,
I first look in
the official ritual books of the Catholic Church. (Makes sense, no?) And
when, for example, it recommends that Palm Sunday be started with a
procession that everyone participates in, I say to myself, “How can we do
that well?” In some cases, because we don’t have a lot of time between
Masses, we can only do a simple procession. But at some Masses we can
figure out how to do the blessing of the palms outside (weather permitting) and
having a wonderful procession for everyone.
There are always people who find that ANY disruption of what they normally
do to be anxiety producing. “What if I’m in the procession and I can’t get to
my usual seat?” To them I want to say, “Jesus suffered on the cross for three
hours and died for us. Is it too much to make a sacrifice of a seat for an hour
in order to worship him?” But of course, I’d never say that because it would
make people feel bad.
The point is,
I encourage people to be open to something different in Holy
Week. Maybe our choices will work very well and help everyone to discover
the mystery of God’s saving love. I hope you’ll tell me about that. Maybe
things won’t work as well as we’d like. (I’m SURE you’ll tell me about
that.) And then we’ll do better next year.

Our Memorial Garden is growing. We will need to
expand it shortly with separate walkways extending in
various directions. The statue and the surrounding area
is intended to be a place of peace and healing for all.
Each brick is engraved with an individually personalized
message of remembrance and three lines of text for
engraving; fourteen (14) characters per line, including all
spacing and punctuation. All engraving is done in
uppercase letters. The cost for each brick is $100. If you
would like to order a personalized brick for the
Memorial Garden, you may pick up an order form in
the rectory or call to request a form be mailed to you.

ADULT FAITH FORMATION
Diane Vella, Pastoral Associate
Will you turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel??
It’s been four weeks so how are your Spiritual Olympics going??
We’re about to begin the fourth week of Lent.
Some of you might remember that this fourth Sunday in
Lent is called LAETARE (“Be joyful!”) SUNDAY because we are halfway through Lent, and looking more and
more forward to Easter and Springtime So this halfway
point is a good time to do a little spiritual check-up on our
Lenten exercises!
Father Ralph and Father Joe got us thinking about
how we Christians “exercise” our Baptism and Confirmation, and how we live out our weekly (hopefully!) reception of the Real Presence of Jesus in Holy Communion.
Lent traditionally gives us three ways to “get in shape” for
saying “yes” to following Jesus at Easter—aka “renewing
our Baptism promises.” Here are the three “exercises:”
RE-CONNECT WITH GOD (aka “PRAYER”)
The best way to get into relationship with someone is to
make the effort to spend time and get to know him or her.
It’s the same with God—getting to know God takes some
“quality time” and spiritual “discipline.” We do this primarily by sharing our hearts and minds with God in
prayer—and opening ourselves through prayer to listen to
what God has to say to us. Sometimes we need to reconnect with familiar ways of praying, and sometimes we
need to find new ways. Whether it’s traditional prayers,
getting to Mass, coming to Evening Prayer, trying Centering Prayer, or learning a new form of Christian meditation,
make the effort! Our parish is here to help if you need
some direction. And, prayer helps us to...
GET OUR PRIORITIES STRAIGHT
(aka “FASTING”)
Traditionally we connect the word “fasting” with giving up
food. But fasting in the Christian sense is a wider thing.
It’s about figuring out the less important things we spend
too much time and money on (Shopping? Eating?, Electronics?) and “fasting” from them so we can re-focus on
what’s really important and what God really wants us to
do. And THEN we have more time and money to…
REACH OUT TO OTHERS (aka “ALMSGIVING”)
Almsgiving is about more than giving money. In fact,
some of us don’t have any money to give! Now that we’ve
prayed to know what God is asking of us, and “fasted”
from stuff and activities we don’t need, how will we spend
our time, talent and treasure in a way that builds up God’s
Kingdom? Someone in the family needing your attention?
An elderly neighbor needing help or company? A worthy
activity in the parish or community that helps those in
need? IT’S UP TO YOU TO FIND THE RIGHT WAY
TO EXERCISE YOUR SPIRITUAL MUSCLES!

March 30, 2014
Wednesday, April 2. From a young age Saint Francis
of Paola (1416-1507) longed for a solitary life marked by
complete and utter dependence upon God. While living
as a hermit he adopted an austere life, focusing on two
spiritual disciplines: fasting and prayer. Underlying his
spirituality was the belief that one must empty oneself,
as Jesus did upon the Cross. Fasting (one of the three
disciplines of Lent) serves as a reminder that nothing
can fill the hungering of the soul except the healing love
of the Lord. He founded the hermits of Brother Francis
of Assisi, which eventually became known as the Minim
Friars, meaning the least of all God’s servants. The
community had a strong devotion to the five wounds of
Christ and the Virgin Mary.
On all three levels there is a clear, gradual progression on the
part of the blind man from blindness to sight, to
understanding, to faith; contrasted sadly with a willful
regression on the part of the Pharisees from vision to
blindness, to ignorance, to total disbelief. The blind man is
cured of his affliction. In contrast, the Pharisees start out
seeing. But they do not want to believe what their eyes reveal
to them.
Have You Heard the Good News,
Dowling, S.J.
First Reading: In this story of the anointing of David
as king of Israel, we hear an important
message—God looks not at appearances,
but at the human heart. The least likely
candidate for king in human eyes is
precisely the one God has chosen.
Responsorial Psalm 23: This beloved
Psalm points to the shepherd David’s
call to shepherd (rule) God’s flock,
Israel. Response: The Lord is my shepherd;
there is nothing I shall want.
Second Reading: Once you—we—were
darkness, but now, because of our
Baptism, we are light. Paul calls us to
live as what we are and tells us how. Is the darkness
overshadowing us? “Wake up!” he commands.
Gospel: John 9 opens with a premise that was a
widely held view in Jesus’ day—affliction is
punishment for sin. It is a view that Jesus corrects: no,
through this affliction, through the healing that he will
bring about, the work of God will be seen. Note the
cost of faith in Jesus: expulsion from the synagogue.
This was the case in the evangelist’s day, the lot of
many Jews who had come to believe in Jesus. Sadly,
our faith of Jesus can at times cost us as well.
Friday, April 4. Saint Isidore of Seville (560-636) is
credited with organizing the Church of Spain through
various councils and synods. His theology of the Trinity
and Incarnation were the basis for a Creed that was
approved at the Fourth Council of Toledo (633 AD).
Along with these two noteworthy accomplishments, he
also revised the Mozarabic Rite—the accepted liturgy of
Spain—and opened cathedral schools for the training of
priests. He was named a Doctor of the Church due to
his extensive writing, including doctrinal summaries,
etymological studies, and rules for religious
communities.
Saturday, April 5. Saint Vincent Ferrer (1350-1419), a
native of Valencia and a Dominican friar, lived during
the Great Western Schism in which there were several
claims to the papacy. Noted for his eloquent preaching,
he worked tirelessly to bring unity in the midst of the
papal controversy. At first he did not attain success in
settling the conflict, but his political savvy eventually
aided in the restoration of papal unity and peace. He
embarked on missionary journeys through Spain,
France, and Italy, preaching a message of repentance
and the fear of hell.

WORDS FROM YOUR HEART
Jesus, every now and then life will throw me a
curve. With you to help catch me, it’s easier to
bounce back. Amen.
