PATRICK’S On frequent occasions, Pope Francis has called on the Christian faithful to perform the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. We do those things here, but during the “Jubilee Year of Mercy” perhaps we should examine what we currently do and consider what still needs to be done. We have many people who live alone, who are homebound, and who are in nursing homes. Let’s think together about what we should do as a parish. If you have ideas or are interested in helping, please join us. Additional brochures and pledge envelopes are available at the entrance to the church. We are asking all parishioners to consider a sacrificial pledge of $4,000 or more. With a 10% down payment ($400) your pledge would be $100/a month for three years or $75/month for four years. All pledges and gifts, no matter the amount, are greatly appreciated! Only through sacrifice throughout the community can we achieve our goal of raising $850,000. Therefore, all contributions, from the smallest to the largest, will be gratefully appreciated If you have not decided on your gift to the campaign, we invite you to prayerfully consider making your pledge this week. Please review the suggested gift plans and continue the success of our campaign by making your gift as soon as possible! At a time when many focus on economic instability, growth, and so on, the Church sets before us the remarkable story of St. Katharine Drexel (1858-1955), whose feast occurred on March 3. Her highly unusual approach to "investing" deserves renewed attention. Katharine's wealth consisted of a trust fund that she inherited from her father, Francis Anthony Drexel, the founder of the enormously successful investment bank that eventually became Drexel Burnham Lambert. For sure, Francis Drexel would not be pleased to know that the company he managed so conservatively and honestly went bankrupt in 1990, largely through its involvement in the junk bond market. But that's another story. When Katharine, her father's sole survivor, eventually inherited the trust fund, it was worth $14 million -- about $3.2 billion in today's dollars. In the 1950's, the trust fund generated a daily income of about $1,000 (roughly $20,000 in today's dollars). Indeed, Katharine was a very wealthy woman. However, Katharine had no interest in her wealth, except as something to give away. She felt called to the religious life, was eventually professed after being formed by the Sisters of Mercy in Pittsburgh, and then founded the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, a congregation devoted to working among poor Native Americans and African-Americans, especially in the South. As she prepared to enter religious life, she intended to relinquish the entire estate, however a bishop convinced her to retain her wealth and use a portion of its income -- $50,000 per year -- to support her new community. Reluctantly, she agreed. From her earliest days as a child, Katharine viewed money as something to give away to others rather than to retain for herself. She acquired this attitude from her father and stepmother. Though extremely wealthy, Francis Drexel and his second wife Emma (his first wife died shortly after giving birth to Katharine) lived rather modestly in Philadelphia. According to reliable reports, Emma Drexel, who was much loved by Katharine, had the practice of joyfully dispensing money to poor people on three afternoons per week. And she was not just tossing out spare change. Her casual handouts amounted to at least $20,000 per year -- the equivalent of $450,000 (!) in today's money. To put it another way, every time Emma Drexel opened the door, she handed out nearly $2,900 for rent, food, clothes, and medicine. Katharine observed her stepmother's wild generosity and regarded it as quite natural. Though Katharine had huge sums available for her own use, she herself lived like a pauper. Sister Carmella Marie Duffy, her biographer, reported that Katharine always booked the cheapest seat on trains, packed her own lunches when traveling, avoided restaurants, and clipped off the blank sections of letters so she could use the scraps for note paper. Even in her 90's, she was forever switching off lights, rationing toilet paper, lowering thermostats, and conserving water. Following her death in 1955, the Vatican newspaper published an article about Katharine with the headline, "The Daughter of Millionaire Drexel Gives Away Millions to Live a Life of Poverty." St. Katharine Drexel -- and her family -- certainly lived out the somber maxim of many ancient Church Fathers: The only wealth that lasts forever is the wealth we give away. And she heeded the warning of St. John Chrysostom: "The most pitiable person of all is the one who lives in luxury and shares his goods with nobody." Opportunities for such "safe investments" abound in our midst today! Fr. Michael Kerper 969 - St. Patrick Parish, Nashua, NH - Pg. 6
