PREMIER WYNNE ANNOUNCES NEW CABINET
Lieutenant Governor David Onley,
Premier Kathleen Wynne MPP (Don Valley West) and Liz Sandals MPP (Guelph) on February 11.
A number of MPPs were named to the Ontario Cabinet on February 11th. They included 10 new MPPs,
many who are regular participants at PEO events.
Attorney General John Gerretsen MPP (Kingston and the Islands) was reappointed. He has responsibility
for the Professional Engineers Act.

Glen Murray MPP (Toronto Centre) was named the Minister of Infrastructure and Transportation, Eric
Hoskins MPP (St. Paul’s) is the new Minister of Economic Development, Trade and Employment and
David Zimmer (Willowdale) is the new Minister of Aboriginal Affairs. PEO Government Relations
Consultant Howard Brown was invited by Premier Wynne to attend the swearing-in ceremony and the

ALL-PARTY MPP PANEL PARTICIPATES IN PEO COUNCIL
Three MPPs participated in PEO’s Council plenary session on February 7th for a special discussion on the
PEO Government Liaison Program (GLP). They were Liberal MPP David Zimmer (Willowdale), PC MPP Rod
Jackson (Barrie) and NDP MPP John Vanthof (Timiskaming-Cochrane). On February 11th, Mr. Zimmer was
named the new Minister of Aboriginal Affairs by Premier Kathleen Wynne MPP (Don Valley West).
The MPPs were part of an hour-long discussion and question period about PEO’s GLP efforts. Some of the
questions raised by Councillors included the Provincial Engineer concept, Engineer of Record and how to
get more engineers involved in legislative affairs. The session was chaired by PEO Government Liaison
Committee Chair Barry Steinberg, P.Eng. PEO President Denis Dixon, P.Eng., presented each MPP with a
PEO scarf and pen to thank them for their participation.

CANADIAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE UNVEIL TOP 10 BARRIERS TO COMPETITIVENESS IN 2013
The Canadian Chamber of Commerce unveiled its Top 10 Barriers to Competitiveness for 2013 on
February 12. The Chamber undertook this initiative last year to draw attention to the barriers that are
holding back Canada’s progress and to urge all levels of government to act more swiftly to improve our
country’s ability to compete globally. Two engineering leaders, Kim Allen, P.Eng., CEO of Engineers
Canada and John Gamble, P.Eng., President of the Ontario Association of Engineering Companies were
quoted in the number four barrier on Inadequate public infrastructure planning below.
“Canada needs a long-term infrastructure plan with predictable funding so that Canadians can
safely and efficiently get to work, move the goods they produce and provide the services their
clients need without being impeded by congestion or the results of infrastructure neglect,”
says Engineers Canada’s Chief Executive Officer Kim Allen, FEC, P.Eng. “Governments, the private
sector and other stakeholders must work together to address deficiencies in the core
infrastructure that keeps Canadians healthy and safe, and have a vision for the future of public
infrastructure in Canada.”
“Infrastructure is a critical investment in our economic, social and environmental quality of life.
Communities and economies are built upon infrastructure. Without it, there are no communities
and no prosperity.” John Gamble, President, Association of Consulting Engineering Companies.
The Chamber’s number one issue last year, as identified by membership, was Canada’s skills shortage.
Addressing the Top 10 Barriers will go a long way towards restoring Canada’s competitiveness according
to Canadian Chamber President and CEO Perrin Beatty. The Chamber is calling on its own membership, on
governments, on educators, on labour organizations, and others to tackle and overcome these barriers.

OCEPP ESSAY COMPETITION ENCOURAGES BRIGHT STUDENT MINDS
The Ontario Centre for Engineering and Public Policy’s (OCEPP) 2013 Student
Essay Competition is underway. Students in any full-time undergraduate or
graduate Ontario University program are eligible and they are to select one
of five topics provided and write a paper of no more than 5000 words to be
received by April 2 at midnight.
The winner in each category will receive a $1,000 award and registration to
the Centre's 2013 Public Policy Conference. Competition rules and winning

OAKVILLE CHAPTER TO HOST SUSTAINABLE CITIES SYMPOSIUM ON APRIL 19TH
PEO Oakville Chapter and the Oakville Chamber of Commerce will host a one-day symposium focused on
the challenges and opportunities in planning for sustainability. The “Sustainable Cities Symposium:
Fostering Innovation for the Future”. The event will be held at the Oakville Conference Centre, 2525
