Mr. Milczyn is the Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Economic Development, Employment and Infrastructure. Karen Chan, P.Eng., who has served as OSPE’s Vice Chair for the past year, now takes over as President and Chair. Also participating in the AGM were PEO President Thomas Chong, P.Eng., PEO Registrar Gerard McDonald, P.Eng., PEO Councillors Roger Jones, P.Eng., and Changiz Sadr, P.Eng. Karen Chan, P.Eng., (left) became OSPE President and Chair at the 2015 AGM on May 5. With him in the photo are PEO President Thomas Chong, P.Eng., (centre) and OSPE CEO Sandro Perruzza (right). 2|Page PC PARTY ANNOUNCES NEW LEADER SATURDAY The vote for the new Ontario PC Party Leader will be announced tomorrow at the Toronto Congress Centre. The final two candidates in the race are PC Deputy Leader Christine Elliott MPP (Whitby-Oshawa) and Patrick Brown MP (Barrie). Ms. Elliott is also the PC Critic for Health and Long-Term Care. Mr. Brown is the Chair for the Federal Conservative Central Ontario Caucus. PC Party members voted for the new leader on May 3 and 7. More than 75,000 PC members had the opportunity to cast their vote. On May 3, CBC News Toronto reported that Ms. Elliott stated the Party has alienated voters in the past with their actions and must change their approach in order to win the 2018 election. The PC Leadership Race will come to a conclusion tomorrow when either Patrick Brown MP (Barrie) (left) or Christine Elliott MPP (Whitby-Oshawa)(right) are announced as PC Leader at the Toronto Congress Centre. Mr. Brown reportedly stated that since he wasn’t associated with any of the Party’s past failures, he will be able to provide the PC Party with the fresh start it needs. PEO PRESIDENT SPEAKS WITH NDP LEADER AT STAKEHOLDER SOCIAL NDP Leader Andrea Horwath MPP (Hamilton Centre) hosted a “Stakeholder Social” on April 22 in Toronto with a number of other members of her caucus, including Catherine Fife MPP (KitchenerWaterloo), NDP Finance and Treasury Board Critic. PEO President Thomas Chong, P.Eng., attended the event and had the opportunity to speak with Ms. Horwath regarding PEO. NDP Leader Andrea Horwath MPP (Hamilton Centre) and other members of her caucus held a social event on April 22. PEO President Thomas Chong, P.Eng., attended. With them in the photo is Catherine Fife MPP (Kitchener-Waterloo), NDP Finance and Treasury Board Critic. 3|Page NEW MPP ATTENDING PEO WESTERN GLP ACADEMY AND CONGRESS Bill Walker MPP (Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound), PC Critic of Community and Social Services, has confirmed his upcoming attendance during the afternoon of the Western Region GLP Academy and Congress in Collingwood on June 13. Georgian Bay Chapter GLP Chair Heiner Philipp, P.Eng., invited Mr. Walker. Georgian Bay Chapter Chair Rup Dhawan will also attend the event. Bill Walker MPP (BruceGrey-Owen Sound), PC Critic of Community and Social Services will attend the PEO Western GLP Academy and Congress on June 13 in Collingwood. Former Georgian Bay Chapter GLP Chair Vajahat Banday, P.Eng., is chairing the conference. Please see page 8 for more information. PEO PRESIDENT AND REGISTRAR TO MEET WITH MINISTER JUNE 1 Brad Duguid MPP (Scarborough Centre), Minister of Economic Development, Employment and Infrastructure will meet with PEO President Thomas Chong, P.Eng., and PEO Registrar Gerard McDonald, P.Eng., on June 1. PEO President Thomas Chong, P.Eng., and PEO Registrar Gerard McDonald, P.Eng., will meet with Brad Duguid MPP (Scarborough Centre), Minister of Economic Development, Employment and Infrastructure on June 1. Mr. Duguid has been a regular participant in PEO events. He regularly speaks at PEO Scarborough Chapter events. Mr. Duguid was a guest speaker at the PEO Student Conference in November 2013. NEW FIVE MINUTE VIDEO RELEASED FROM “ENGINEERS WANT IN” CONFERENCE On March 30, 2015, Ryerson University, Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science, along with PEO and the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE) hosted the "Engineers Want In" conference in Toronto. Participants and speakers included various business leaders, journalists, policy makers, engineers, academics, and students who spoke and debated about the need for raising the profile of professional engineers in Ontario. Karim Bardeesy, Deputy Principal Secretary to the Premier (right photo) spoke during the Policy and Opinion Makers panel session. Mr. MacLaren and Mr. McDonell are the only two elected MPPs in Ontario who are professional engineers. EAST TORONTO CHAPTER MEMBER PARTICIPATES MPP FUNDRAISER Michael Coteau MPP (Don Valley East), Minister Responsible for Tourism, Culture and Sport and Minister Responsible for the 2015 Pan and Parapan American Games hosted a reception in Toronto on April 29. Attending the event was East Toronto Chapter’s Harneet Panesar, P.Eng., among 30 to 40 other guests. East Toronto Chapter’s Harneet Panesar, P.Eng., met Michael Coteau MPP (Don Valley East), Minister Responsible for Tourism, Culture and Sport and Minister Responsible for the 2015 Pan and Parapan American Games, at a reception on April 29. 5|Page Mr. Panesar met and spoke with Mr. Coteau, reaffirming the responsibility of engineers to the public and the overall role they play in Ontario safety, as it relates to the 2015 Games. PEO PRESIDENT AND REGISTRAR MEET SASKATCHEWAN MINISTER AT ENGINEERS AGM PEO President Thomas Chong, P.Eng., and PEO Registrar Gerard McDonald, P.Eng., attended the Association of Professional Engineers & Geoscientists of Saskatchewan’s (APEGS) Annual General Meeting on May 1. Also in attendance was Nancy Heppner MLA (Martensville), Saskatchewan Minister of Highways and Infrastructure and Minister Responsible for the Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation. Mr. Chong had the opportunity to speak with Ms. Heppner about engineering issues of interest between the provinces. ENGINEERING ORGANIZATIONS ATTEND EVENT WITH FORMER PRIME MINISTER PEO Manager of Government Liaison Programs Jeannette Chau, P.Eng., (right) attended a Canadian Club event in honour of former Prime Minister Paul Martin on April 28 in Toronto. It will be hosted by the PEO PorcupineKapuskasing Chapter at the Holiday Inn in Timmins. Chairing the event will be Chapter Chair Tony Linton, P.Eng. NDP House Leader Gilles Bisson MPP (Timmins-James Bay) (left) will be speaking at the PEO GLP Academy and Congress in Timmins on June 6. Tony Linton, P.Eng., (right) will chair the event. Leaders in engineering from across Northern Ontario are expected to participate in this session. The purpose is to help engineers better understand how they can work with their MPPs. Mr. Bisson has recogni ed the engineering profession in the egislature as leaders in ge ng their views heard by PPs. INTERIM PC LEADER AND MPPS TO SPEAK AT WESTERN REGION GLP ACADEMY IN COLLINGWOOD Interim PC Leader Jim Wilson MPP (Simcoe-Grey) and Ann Hoggarth MPP (Barrie) will be guest speakers at the PEO Western Region GLP Academy and Congress on June 13 in Collingwood. Mr. Wilson steps down as PC Leader on May 9. Ms. Hoggarth is the Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Labour. As reported on page four, Bill Walker MPP (BruceGrey-Owen Sound), PC Critic of Community and Social Services, will also attend in the afternoon.
