OVER FORTY MINISTERS AND MPPS WILL PARTICIPATE IN QUEEN’S PARK RECEPTION BREAKING NEWS PEO COUNCIL DISCUSSES FUTURE OF ONTARIO CENTRE FOR ENGINEERING AND PUBLIC POLICY PEO Council is in session for its 502 annual meeting on September 24 and 25. PEO Council held its 502 annual meeting on September 24 and 25. The Council reviewed a number of important PEO issues, including: 1.The Continuing Professional Development, Competency and Quality Assurance Task Force 2.The Fall Regional Town Halls 3.An update on the Ontario Centre for Engineering and Public Policy (OCEPP) 4.The PEO Legislation Committee’s work with Attorney General’s office on plans for potential Act changes based the Elliot Lake recommendations. It was also agreed to have the Engineering Dimensions magazine to be sent to all Licensees. On the plans for the Continuing Professional Development, it was agreed to test the plan on the PEO membership before implementing. The Council had updates on the 2016 budget, PEO Strategic plan and Engineers Canada. The discussion on OCEPP was of particular interest. The future of the program will be brought to the next council meeting. 2 | PAGE PEO PRESIDENT HOSTS A SERIES OF TOWN HALLS ON IMPLEMENTING THE ELLIOT LAKE RECOMMENDATIONS PEO President Thomas Chong, P.Eng., will be hosting a series of Town Halls across Ontario from September to November. PEO Past President Annette Bergeron, P.Eng., Chair of the Continuing Professional Development, Competency and Quality Assurance (CPDCQA) Task Force and PEO Registrar Gerard McDonald, P.Eng., will join Mr. Chong. They will provide an overview of the Elliot Lake Commission of Inquiry recommendations and an update on the Specialist Designation. For more information, click here: http://bit.ly/1KJYSaI. 3 | PAGE MUNICIPALITIES NEED AN INFRASTRUCTURE PLAN CEO of Consulting Engineers Ontario (CEO) Barry Steinberg, P.Eng., was published in an op-ed article in the Hamilton Spectator on September 15. He wrote about the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund and advised municipalities to develop, update and maintain their municipal asset management plans. “Municipal asset management plans are essential for the province and municipalities to prioritize where to invest valuable infrastructure dollars, ensuring they’re being directed to municipalities with the most urgent infrastructure needs,” said Mr. Steinberg. “These plans help municipalities track and understand not just what sort of infrastructure they have, but also its precise location, age, condition and remaining life expectancy — all essential variables in effectively planning and managing the cost of maintaining and replacing their assets, which foster continued civic growth and development.” Consulting Engineers of Ontario CEO Barry Steinberg, P.Eng. ALMOST TWO DOZEN ENGINEERS RUNNING FOR PARLIAMENT In the upcoming fall federal election, 23 professional engineers are running as candidates. The engineers will be running as candidates for all four major parties - seven for the Liberals, seven for the Green Party, five for the Conservatives and four for the NDP. Thirteen of the 23 candidates are running for seats in Ontario. A complete list of the federal engineer candidates can be found at Engineers Canada’s federal election website: http://bit.ly/1KghNHW. He honoured two Silver Medalists of Parapan PanAm Wheel Chair Basketball Canada teams, Melanie Hawtin and Bo Hedges. Accessibility for the physically and mentally challenged is an extensive job for engineers, in developing equipment and systems to ease the stress in their lives and integration into community. John Twohig, former Senior Policy Advisor to the Ministry of the Attorney General, was another award recipient. She was chosen for the award based on her five years as a dedicated member of the Engineering Alumni Association’s Honours and Awards Committee, at the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. Mr. Twohig was the lead on the PEO file at the Attorney General Ministry for many years. York University’s Assistant Dean of Engineering Marisa Sterling, P.Eng., (right) and John Twohig, former Senior Policy Advisor to the Ministry of the Attorney General (left), were awarded the Arbor Award by the University of Toronto on September 9. Ms. Sterling stepped down as the PEO Enforcement Manager in August after many years with PEO. She had been with PEO since 2007. She is also the President of the Ontario Engineering Foundation for Education. WORK IN PROGRESS Marie-France Lalonde MPP (Ottawa-Orléans) confirmed she will be a speaker at the PEO Eastern Region GLP Academy and Congress on October 3. She will be the first Liberal MPP to ever attend an Eastern Region GLP Academy and Congress.
