PEO KINGSTON CHAPTER GLP CHAIR MEETS NEW MPP AT OPEN HOUSE BREAKING NEWS PREMIER CALLS SUDBURY BY-ELECTION FOR FEBRUARY 5 Premier Kathleen Wynne has called a byelection for February 5 for the riding of Sudbury following the resignation of NDP MPP Joe Cimino. The Liberal candidate is Glenn Thibeault who has served as the NDP MP for the same riding since 2008. He will be opposed by PC candidate Paula Peroni, NDP candidate Suzanne Shawbonquit, Green Party candidate David Robins and Independent candidate Andrew Olivier. Eng., sought the Liberal nomination in 2014 but lost to Mr. Olivier. ENGINEER AND PC MPP NAMED LOCAL NEWSMAKER OF THE YEAR E Jack MacLaren, P. Eng., MPP (Carleton-Mississippi Mills) has been named the 2014 West Carleton Newsmaker of the Year by the Ottawa Community News. Mr. MacLaren is one of two engineers in the Ontario Legislature and is a regular participant in PEO activities in his riding. He is the PC Critic of Senate and Democratic Reform at Queen’s Park. Seventeen candidates are seeking office for eight posts. A number of candidates have referred to the GLP in their platforms, which indicates the growing importance of the program as an important part of PEO’s regulatory mandate. All-candidate meetings were held on January 12 and 13. They can be viewed online on the PEO website (http://bit.ly/1ChlFqM). Voting takes place by phone, online or mail anytime between now and February 27. P.Eng. P.Eng. P.Eng. PRIME MINISTER PROMOTES FORMER MPP’S SON TO CABINET Durham MP Erin O’Toole has been named to the Federal Cabinet as Minister of Veterans Affairs. He is the son of the former MPP for the same riding. John O’Toole was a long-time supporter of PEO during his years in the Legislature from 1995 to 2011. Photo credit: Durhamregion.com PREMIER DISCUSSES INTERPROVINCIAL MOBILITY WITH PRIME MINISTER Premier Kathleen Wynne MPP (Don Valley West) met with Prime Minister Stephen Harper for the first time in over a year on January 5 in Toronto. They had discussions on the need to remove barriers to internal trade and the importance of continued support from both levels of government for the manufacturing and automotive sector. Interprovincial mobility has been a key issue of importance to PEO and other engineering regulators across Canada. PC LEADERSHIP MEMBERSHIP DEADLINE IS FEBRUARY 28 Ontario PC leadership candidates are holding events across the province and are inviting engineers and others to participate in their upcoming convention which will be held May 9. Ontarians are being invited to join the PC Party prior to the cut-off date, which is February 28 if they wish to participate. The five candidates are Deputy Leader and Health and Long-Term Care Critic Christine Elliott MPP (WhitbyOshawa), Energy Critic Lisa MacLeod MPP (NepeanCarleton), Finance Critic Vic Fedeli MPP (Nipissing), Citizenship, Immigration, and International Trade Critic Monte McNaughton MPP (Lambton-Kent-Middlesex), and Federal Conservative Chair for the Central Ontario Caucus Patrick Brown MP (Barrie). Ms. Elliott was a guest speaker at two PEO Candidate Colleges and Mr. Fedeli was guest speaker at the Northern Region GLP Academy and Congress in 2012 in Sudbury and is a regular participant at chapter events in his riding. Ms. MacLeod and Mr. McNaughton have also participated in PEO events. FORMER FEDERAL MINISTER APPOINTED HEAD OF CANADIAN ELECTRICITY ASSOCIATION Former Federal Cabinet Minister Sergio Marchi has been appointed as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Electricity Association. Mr. Marchi was an MP for 15 years and has served as Minister of the Environment, Citizenship and Immigration and International Trade. His appointment is effective February 9, 2015. Eng., participated in an Open House for new Kingston and the Islands MPP Sophie Kiwala at her constituency office on January 9. She is Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport. He invited Ms. Kiwala to participate in a PEO Take Your MPP to Work Day. Ms. Kiwala replaced former Attorney General John Gerretsen who had been the long-time MPP for that riding. PEO Kingston GLP Chair Hafiz Bashir, P.Eng., (left) with Kingston and the Islands MPP Sophie Kiwala (right). Ms. Kiwala was the Executive Assistant to Kingston and the Islands MP Ted Hsu. This was Mr. Bashir’s first chance to meet Ms. Kiwala. Mr. Bashir also sits on the PEO Government Liaison Committee. ENGINEERS PARTICIPATE IN PREMIER’S NEW YEAR’S LEVEE Three engineers participated in Premier Kathleen Wynne’s New Year’s Levee on January 11. The Premier spoke about the challenges her government faces in the coming months on the economic front with the recent dramatic drop in oil prices. The engineers attending were George Teichman, P. Eng., Robin Skeates, P. Eng., and Ping Wu, P. Eng. Mr. Teichman served for many years on the Board of the Ontario Association of Architects. Mr. Skeates works with the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change and Mr. Wu is the President of Professional Engineers Government of Ontario. Eng., participated in the New Year’s Levee for Minister of Aboriginal Affairs, David Zimmer MPP (Willowdale) on January 11. Minister Zimmer is a former Parliamentary Assistant to the Attorney General. He served as PEO’s primary contact at the Legislature between 2003 and 2011. Also attending the Levee was Ping Wu, P. OTTAWA ENGINEERS PARTICIPATE IN LEVEE FOR PARLIAMENTARY ASSISTANT Three members of the PEO Ottawa Chapter participated in the New Year’s levee for John Fraser MPP (Ottawa South), Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care on January 3 at the Ottawa Mennonite Centre. Participating in the event were Emmanuel Ikoom, P. Eng., and Chapter GLP Co-Chairs Guy Boone P. Eng., and Hubert Mamba, EIT. Mr. Fraser was constituency assistant to former Premier Dalton McGuinty for many years prior to Mr. Fraser’s by-election win in 2013. Mr. Baker is Parliamentary Assistant to the President of the Treasury Board and was presenting awards to a number of community representatives.
