SAINT ISAAC JOGUES PARISH 8149 Golf Road ♦Niles, IL 60714 847/967-1060 ~ Fax # 847/967-1070 Website: http://sij-parish.com LOVE NEVER FAILS Corinthians 13:8 Archdiocese of Chicago Annual Catholic Appeal 2013 Page Two Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 27, 2013 THE ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL: “CHARITY HEALS” There are a great many things that ail our world. One does not have to be a professional analyst to discern the unmistakable signs of “decline” in the West. There is great concern for “global warming,” but little attention paid to attacks on conscience and the sanctity of life. Growing secularism and state control threaten to make CHARITY, as we have known it, a quaint, unnecessary commodity. What ails the world can and does impact the Church’s ministry and mission. The Germans long ago found a word for our modern malady - - “WELTSCHMERZ.” Literally translated “world pain,” Weltschmerz is “depression or apathy caused by comparing the actual state of the world and an ideal state.” Can we find a cure? There is a true story about Dr. Karl Menninger, the famous psychiatrist. It suggests a practical answer for us in these stressful times. Dr. Menninger gave many lectures on mental health. He often accepted questions from the audience. Once a man asked him: “What can you advise a person to do if he or she felt a nervous breakdown coming on?” Contrary to what most people expected, Dr. Menninger did not prescribe a visit to a psychiatrist. His reply stunned most of his audience. He advised: “Lock up your house, go across the railroad tracks, find someone in need and do something to help that person.” This down to earth advice from Dr. Menninger comes close to a Christian conviction: “CHARITY HEALS.” The theme of the 2013 Annual Catholic Appeal is “LOVE NEVER FAILS.” It encourages us to believe in what we hear proclaimed - the Word of God - and to act on it. Even if we have a “touch” of Weltschmerz, we are given an opportunity to participate in the important educational and charitable outreach of the Chicago Archdiocese. It is simply investing our “gifts” wisely. In doing so, we are either being pro-active against or “taking the cure” for what ails the world. In our years of involvement with the Annual Catholic Appeal, St. Isaac Jogues Parish has met its goals and received much needed rebates. This year’s rebate was $5,788. While we are grateful to the 358 households that pledged to the Appeal last year, there are approximately 1500 households registered. Wouldn’t it be great if the whole parish would respond this year the way the 358 households did? Like many of you, I personally pledged “sacrificially.” I did so because I believe in the Annual Catholic Appeal. Remember, “91 cents of every dollar raised goes directly to the critical work of the schools, parishes, agencies and ministries of the Archdiocese of Chicago.” Yes, there is much that ails our world. There is widespread Weltschmerz even among Catholics who are discouraged. There is no better “cure” than Charity. The beautiful Spiritual, “There is a Balm in Gilead,” comforts us and calls us back into God’s active service: Page Three Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 27, 2013 Sometimes I feel discouraged, And think my work’s in vain, Don’t ever feel discouraged, For Jesus is your friend, And if you lack for knowledge, He’ll not refuse to lend. If you cannot preach like Peter, If you cannot pray like Paul, You can tell the love of Jesus and say, “He died for all.” There is a Balm in Gilead to make the wounded whole. There is a Balm in Gilead to heal the sin-sick soul. Charity heals . . . “Love Never Fails!” Please pledge to the Annual Catholic Appeal. Be generous, and know that YOU have a part in great work! -Fr. Luczak NEW CIBORIA DONATED Five new ciboria have been donated to the Parish in memory of Fr. Bill Brinker. Ciboria are sacred vessels used for hosts to be consecrated at the Mass. The new ciboria will replace those used in Ordinary Time. The cost of repairing and re-plating the old ciboria would exceed the cost of new ones. The donor wishes to remain anonymous. THANK YOU! Annual Catholic Appeal 2013 “Love Never Fails!” 1 Cor 13:8 Please spend some time this week reflecting on the Annual Catholic Appeal brochure that you received with your bulletin. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal campaign is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments. As you review the work enabled by your contribution to the Annual Catholic Appeal, please reflect on God’s gifts to you. He has given you all that you have. Your gifts to our parish, to the Archdiocese and to the work of the Church throughout the world are given in gratitude for the continuing gifts that God gives you. Sometimes it is difficult to envision how one pledge can help an organization the size of our Archdiocese, how it can make a real difference. But each pledge does make a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services. Our combined gifts not only signify our gratitude to God, they fund a significant portion of the work of our Archdiocese. After our parish goal of $37,761.00 is reached in cash, 100% of the additional funds come back to our parish to help to fund our needs. If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. For those of you that did not receive a mailing or have not had time to respond to it, we will conduct our in-pew pledge process at all Masses next weekend. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response. Page Four Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Grs. 3-4 will have their Child Safety Evening with Mrs. Stanton during class on Monday. MASS INTENTIONS As you may know, the Mass Intentions for 2013 for our parish Masses are full and the Mass Intentions for 2014 are not yet open. We offer you the following options in order for you to remember family members and friends with your Mass intention. If you already have a Mass intention for 2013, but only gave one name for the intention, you are permitted to have a second name. Fr. Kennedy will gladly accept Mass intentions for Masses said at the friary chapel in Chicago. Forms are available at the Rectory. Please fill it out and either mail it or leave it in the sacristy (but please remember that he is here most weekends but not always every weekend). Pray for your loved one or friend and help the missions at the same time. Request a Mass intention from the Office for Mission Education and Animation online at http://www.wearemissionary.org or stop by the Rectory for a form and mail it to them. Contact other religious communities to see if they have intentions (Servites, Jesuits, Divine Word Missionaries, etc.) ST. JOSEPH TABLE Our parish’s St. Joseph Table will be held on Sunday, March 10th, beginning with Mass at Noon, followed by the blessing of the table and serving of food 1:30-4:30 p.m. This tradition began as an expression of gratitude for the intercession and help of St. Joseph. While it originated in Sicily, it has enjoyed popularity among many peoples. There is no charge for sharing in the table, but donations received will go to our parish’s work of helping the poor and needy through our St. Vincent DePaul Ministry. You can help this year’s St. Joseph Table with your prayers, your time (set up, serving, clean up), and/or your meatless food or monetary donations (to prepare the table and food for all the people who will come). To offer your assistance or for more information please stop in the Holy Family Room after Mass the next couple of weekends or call Santa DiFranco, 847/966-1802, or Dee Stanton, 847/966-1180. CANDLEMAS The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, Candlemas, will be celebrated this Saturday, February 2nd. Please note we will have a Mass at 8 a.m. that day and not a Communion Service. During the Mass we will be blessing candles for use at home and here in church. Home candles will be available after mass. Donations will be appreciated. Human Concerns Commission The Human Concerns Commission will meet on Thursday, Jan. 31, at 7 p.m. in the Holy Family Room. New members are welcome. FIRST FRIDAY ADORATION On First Friday, February 1, we will have exposition and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and pray for the healing and guidance of our nation. The evening will be from 7-10 p.m. in church and will include the praying of the Patriotic Rosary, all the Mysteries of the Rosary, the Divine Mercy Chaplet and Benediction. Please note that we have shortened the time frame with the hope that more people will be able to come for one or more hours. Page Six Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Altar Flowers this week… January 27, 2013 YEAR OF SUNDAY MASS: QUESTION OF THE WEEK Jesus went into the synagogue on the Sabbath according to his custom. How does tradition or custom impact how often I attend Sunday Mass? KNOW THE MASS, ONE WORD AT A TIME: STAND “InThanksgivingfor CountlessBlessings” GadziakFamily I WISH UPON A MAGIC STAR By Jean Brown I wish upon a magic star, That would fall on me like snow. And every Advent This star was sure to go. It came upon a midnight clear, The guiding light shone bright We followed it to Bethlehem Where there was a beautiful sight. A child was born, Our Newborn King! And to everybody’s eyes, There to bring gifts to the Babe, Were three kings that were wise. And the drummer boy, who played his drum, And sang his happy song And the townspeople who Knelt beside the Babe, praised Him The whole night long. And the sky above their Heads was blue as blue can be, For this is heaven’s gate, Where we someday wish to be. Poetically yours, Jean Brown Jean is a resident of the Niles Nursing & Rehabilitation Center and a friend of St. Isaac Jogues Parish. She recited her poem for us at the Giving Tree event in December, 2012. “At Sunday Mass we sit, we kneel, we bow, and we stand. Every gesture, every action has its own meaning. We sit in a posture of receptivity. We kneel to express our reverent worship, as we do when we bow. And we stand for a couple of reasons. We stand at the Gospel out of respect for the Word of Jesus that comes to us. We stand at other parts of the Mass for a different reason. For example, we stand for the Collect, the Prayer over the Offering, the Prayer after Communion, the Creed, and for the Lord’s Prayer. “When we stand during these prayers and the profession of Faith, we express our identity and dignity as adopted sons and daughters of God. Jesus says that we are no longer servants but his friends. And Paul says that we are no longer strangers and aliens but members of the household of God, truly sons and daughters in the Holy Spirit. In the Mass, we stand before God, because we belong to God.” Louis J. Cameli, 2012 Archdiocese of Chicago: Liturgy Training Publications Dear Folks at St. Isaac Jogues, I wanted to thank you all so much for the generous donations of coats and warm winter things for our clients here at Cornerstone Community Outreach. My special thanks goes to the Women’s Ministry who collected, sorted and bagged everything up. What a monumental project. Also, a big thank you to the Teen Group who collected and packed so many pairs of gloves. What a timely gift seeing how the weather has changed. God bless you all for your generosity for these many years. Sincerely, Lylia Jackson Cornerstone Community Outreach Page Seven Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 27, 2013 Today’s Readings First Reading — Rejoicing in the LORD must be your strength (Nehemiah 8:2-4a, 5-6, 8-10). Psalm — Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life (Psalm 19). Second Reading — In one Spirit we were all baptized into one body (1 Corinthians 12:12-30 [12-14, 27]). Gospel — The Spirit of the Lord has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives (Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21). TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Saturday’s feast of the Presentation is a day for the blessing of candles. Why does liturgy require candles? In the first years of the church, worship was often at night, and candles and torches were carried from place to place within the worship space as needed. Candles were also a mark of festivity and hospitality when people gathered for prayer in homes, and later on in large buildings with thick walls and dark corners. But even after gaslight and electricity, candles were kept. Part of the reason has to do with the warm, clean light of a candle’s flame. Candles are a good sign of the partnership of God and creation: wax made by bees, gathered and fashioned by human hands into something beautiful and useful. In order for the light to shine, the candle surrenders itself, almost as if it is pouring itself out so that the light can flood into the world. The candle of baptism, placed into our hands, and carried again and again, speaks silently of that same wisdom. If you would save your life, you must lose it. You must pour your life out like Christ so that you may be filled with the light of his love. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
