St. Bartholomew Church 4949 W. Patterson Ave. ¡Me hicieron quedar bien! ¡Paz! Marty Graham-McHugh, Principal Page 3 This past week Fr. Ric asked me to spend some time reflecting on my years here at St. Bart’s and my thoughts about Catholic Education. I am of course, honored to do so! Every serious conversation about Catholic Education starts with the idea that Catholic Education is a ministry of the Catholic Church, a ministry of the parish. I would hope that every decision I make as a school leader has that idea at its root. In the nine years I have been the school leader at St. Bart’s, my hope has been to help every child who crosses our path be a better person because we help them to grow in faith and knowledge. One of the genuinely unique traditions of our school is our morning all school prayer. While there is nothing unusual in saying morning prayer, our all school morning prayer has included the Prayer of St. Francis every school day since September 11, 2001. Believing in the power of prayer means St. Bart’s has been a voice for peace for our students and the world now for quite some time! Our Peace Garden in front of school also speaks to our efforts as a school to be a sign of hope for others. “Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.” I am sure that as I go on to other things, this commitment to be a Catholic institution, a caring community, a place where learning is our business will continue! “Generations of faith, rooted in excellence.” Just a few pictures that I can still have in my memory as the days of May and June run down; they make me say, “thanks!” Thanks, Fr. Jason for inviting me to be part of this wonderful school community since 2007. I have no regrets and I have so much to be thankful for! Thanks Fr. Ric for being a wonderful role model and a genuinely spiritual pastor. Thanks faculty and staff for all of your support and efforts on behalf of our kids. You made me look good! Thanks to all of our students past and present for allowing us to have some influence for the good in your lives. Carry it on! Some images that I don’t think I will ever forget: First days of school as kids connect to their teachers outside the school buildings, cameras are always at work capturing the images! Every 8th grade Graduation Mass! Every First Holy Communion! What an honor it has been to distribute the Body and Blood of Our Lord to our kids! Seeing our former students graduating from great high school programs and continuing on into college! Traveling in summers to Brush Creek Wyoming with many kids for the past six years. Every Art Fair in May has been an opportunity to share our creativity with their parents. Crowning a new winner of the Geography Bee during Catholic Schools Week. Preschool International Days and All School Masses. Marching in the St. Patrick Day Parade with our friends from the Big Shoulders. Honors Day Assemblies. Watching our many sports teams on the court, especially when coached by Rudy Martinez! Bob and Tom! These are just a few of the pictures I vividly recall! What a privilege to be a part of this place! Peace! PARISH LIFE Congratulation Class of 2016 So the St. Bartholomew School Class of 2016 will be long remembered! Yes, this is just the kind of thing I love to say about every class that graduates from St. Bartholomew School, and typically I do! But the Class of 2016 is unique in many ways. I am particularly impressed with the numbers of our students who have been accepted at top schools in Chicago. Of course we expect them to do be the best, but in a highly competitive school structure, it is more and more difficult to be accepted at St. Ignatius, North Side College Prep, and Whitney Young etc. Our students have done that and earned significant academic awards from DePaul Academy and St. Patrick’s too! Congratulations to the Class of 2016! They have created a legacy that will be very difficult to improve upon over the next years. However, I am reasonably sure that there are boys and girls currently in grades 5, 6, and 7 who will try! Carry it on! Sincerely, Martin Graham-McHugh, Principal VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! ¡Sigan adelante!
