The Leonid - Bishop Canevin High School
We Say Goodbye… So, the moment the class of 2014 has been waiting for has finally arrived – graduation. As much as I’d like to go on a rant about high school, I’m afraid I’m as melancholy as the rest of my peers. However, I won’t go into a sentimental bout of nostalgia that will probably make you nauseous. I will make it clear though, that I’m not only going to miss this school, but more specifically, this newspaper staff, very dearly. I’ve come a long way with the Leonid. I went from ending up in journalism my sophomore year and not wanting to be there, to having the time of my life both years I’ve had the opportunity to attend the class. It’s definitely among my favorite courses taken… ever. Now, of course I’ve had my fair share of dissing our own publication out of sheer humor. Surprisingly enough, people have cared and will continue to care about the voices of their peers. Journalism might not seem like the funfest you were looking forward to, but it provides you with the resources to make your opinions and viewpoints known. If you’re anything like me, that truly means a lot. I’d like to make a personal shout out to everyone I’ve worked with over the past few years, from my co-editor, Lauren Villella, to my moderator, Mrs. Finnegan. I couldn’t ask for a better team of creators to really help me develop my vision. Despite missing giving Lauren a hard time over font choices and Mrs. Finnegan a migraine due to my controversial subject matter, I’m really just going to miss everything we’ve come to be. One of my proudest high school achievements was becoming the editor of this paper I thought no one would ever pay any attention to. I’ll miss all of it, I’ll miss all of you, but I’m looking forward to a bright future with these touching memories to reminisce on down the road. Thank you so much for making this difficult journey that much more bearable. I’ll never forget it. --Serena Johnson ‘14 Serving as editor of the Leonid with Serena has been one of the biggest highlights of my senior year. I have thoroughly enjoyed writing and reading every article in these past seven issues, and I would like to thank those people who have made this experience possible. Thank you to Mrs. Finnegan for giving me the outstanding opportunity to embrace the role of editor and for allowing me to bring my inner creativity and vision to the paper. Thank you to Serena for working with me this past year and for imbuing each edition of the Leonid with a remarkable does of originality and talent. Finally, thank you to all the dedicated Leonid staff writers, cover designers and to all those who contributed to various issues. Your unique visions and perspectives have made the Leonid an undeniable mosaic of riveting voices. As editors, Serena and I believed in the power of quotes to entrance and inspire, so in my farewell, I would like to leave behind one final maxim that beckons to writing, the most beautiful of arts: “Close the door. Write with no one looking over your shoulder. Don't try to figure out what other people want to hear from you; figure out what you have to say. It's the one and only thing you have to offer.” --Lauren Villella ‘14 …and I Say Hello Hello, my lovely Leonid readers. How are you doing? I couldn't be more excited to be your new editor for the 2014-2015 school year! We are going to have so much fun. Make sure to get a copy of the Leonid every month for some fun editorials, music and movie reviews, and coverage of important world issues. I want to use the Leonid to make Canevin students more aware of the world around us. Let's do something awesome together. --Maggie Dormer ‘15 2 Editor Spotlight: Serena Johnson With an Innate Creativity and Spirited Originality, Her Liberating Words Ignite a Flame of Greatness By: Lauren Villella ‘14 Leonid Editor The first thing that struck me about Serena Johnson was her laugh. Infectious, boisterous and spirited, her laugh captivates all who hear it, and forces one to draw close and listen well. I have been fortunate to know Serena these past four years – beginning when we met in Mr. Checketts’s Modern World class freshman year – and also to be a firsthand witness to her superb artistic vision and creative talent. Active in the Leonid, Oracle and Book Club, Serena is a girl of the heart – she is a superbly talented writer with a gift for giving a face to the unfathomable. Her liberating words – woven together in prose, poems and essays – are inspiring and riveting, and they serve as testaments to her singular story laced with magnetic intrigue. A self-described “creative, introverted and optimistic” person, Serena considers freshman year to be her favorite year of high school. “I hate to be cliché, but I’d have to say that freshman year was one of the greatest years of my life. I really found myself. I made wonderful friends. I just had a fantastic time.” Writing, blogging and watching psychological thrillers have been constants in Serena’s life since freshman year, hobbies that beckon to a girl who is very happy as long as she is writing or creating something. While prose is the type of literary style Serena considers her forté, she has a special affinity for “realistic, slice-of-life fiction that showcases the beauty in the menial, everyday scenes of life.” Serena counts Stephen King, George Orwell and Vladimir Nabokov among her favorite authors, and she greatly admires the cinematic work of satirical directors like Stanley Kubrick and Quentin Tarantino. Serena plans on attending Robert Morris University in Spring 2015 to study English, with her heart set on writing screenplays and making movies. In regard to cinema, Serena considers psychological thrillers to be her favorite movie genre, because “nothing is better than walking away from a movie like, ‘Whoa. Mind. Blown.’” While she would have loved to live through the ‘60s and adores the “lax vibe of the ‘70s,” Serena has some favorite modern performers as well, including Leonardo Serena’s Fun Facts DiCaprio and Angelina Jolie. Her dream Favorite Movie Director(s): Stanley Kubrick, dinner date with a person from the past would Quentin Tarantino, Steve McQueen and Christopher be “Andy Warhol… he just seems like the Nolan type of person who would get you lost just Favorite Movie Quote: “George Washington was in a thinking about being a part of his world.” cult. And the cult was into aliens, man.” Ron Slater, There are few people with more Dazed and Confused. substance than Serena Johnson. With a unique Favorite Fictional Character(s): Trent Lane, The artistic vision and an inherent creativity built Joker, Gogo Yubari and Veronica Sawyer upon emotional honesty, there is no doubt that Musician You Would Most Like to See in Concert: Serena will succeed in all her future Lady Gaga endeavors. When asked where she hopes to see herself in ten years, Serena answered simply, “Creating. Success would be fantastic, but if I don’t achieve it by then, it wouldn’t be the end of the world. As long as I’m happy and doing something that I know I’ll love forever, I’ll be in paradise.” 3 Editor Spotlight: Lauren Villella Classy, Sophisticated, & Timeless By: Serena Johnson ‘14 Leonid Editor It is time for yet another senior spotlight and I’m happy to say that I had the honor of interviewing the ever-talented Lauren Villella. I could ramble on and on about the basic information surrounding her background and upbringing, but I decided to focus on the unique core of this beloved artist. I can proudly say this was one of my favorite articles I’ve ever had the opportunity to write. SJ: How do you feel about graduating? LV: I am very excited to be moving on and entering a new phase in my life. I have very happy memories at Bishop Canevin, and I have no doubt that they will always sustain me in the future. I am excited to meet new people, to learn more about myself and make my mark in the world. SJ: What are you future endeavors? College? Career goals? LV: I will be attending La Roche College in the Fall 2014 to major in Child and Family Studies and minor in Sociology. After that, my plan is to either get my Master’s degree in Social Work or my Master’s in Applied Developmental Psychology, and both would be from Pitt. My goal is to either be a Child Life Specialist or a social worker at Children’s Hospital. I want to work on either the Oncology or Cardiac Intensive Care Units, because those floors are home to some very sick kids, and more than anything I want to know that I have helped someone in need. SJ: You’re a vintage gal to the core. Explain your fascination with the retro aspects of our culture. What made you get so into old films and the like? LV: I remember first becoming interested in Old Hollywood around my sophomore year of high school. I had always known and heard of the often-talked-about icons (Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor etc.), but I didn’t really know them. I didn’t know what they were all about. Likewise, I had seen popular classic films like Gone With the Wind and The Sound of Music, but I didn’t really appreciate them, or recognize their extraordinary brilliance. I don’t really know what sparked the intense fascination, but I feel like it was always inside of me – this awe, this captivation for all things 1940s and ‘50s. I slowly started reading books about Old Hollywood icons and renting some popular, black-andwhite vintage films, and I became instantly hooked. I was, and remain, enthralled. I thoroughly adore, admire and try to evoke Old Hollywood in all that I do. I just love the way it was. I love the black-and-white movies of the ‘40s, ‘50s and ‘60s, I love the way the women looked (with their elaborate hairstyles, tailored clothes and made-up eyes) and the way they spoke and walked. I love the understated glamour – it really was a classy time when style and elegance mattered. Women in Classic Hollywood were truly glamorous – an unfathomable quality that lacks in our world today – and became icons by just being themselves. They really didn’t even have to try – by just being uniquely themselves, they wrote themselves into the pages of history. I am eternally enchanted by their legends. (continued on page 5) 4 VILLELLA (continued from page 4) I think the movies of Hollywood’s Golden Era have more substance than the movies of today. I have seen over 140 classic films and I can honestly say that the cinematography is magnificent, the actors had real talent and the dialogue was top-notch. Looking back to sophomore year when I first became interested, I realize that I sensed an authenticity in Old Hollywood, a very real sincerity that touched my heart and made it eternally retro. I definitely was born in the wrong era. I often wish I could be sitting in the Coconut Grove in 1944, wearing vintage Dior and chatting with Lauren Bacall, Gene Tierney, Ava Gardner, or whoever was around. Like all the Old Hollywood stars who enthralled and captivated audiences with their individuality and style, I wish I could have known them. SJ: You’re a beautiful writer, one of the best I’ve had the pleasure of working with. What’s your favorite writing style (i.e. prose, poetry, fiction, nonfiction, etc.)? LV: My favorite style to write is freestyle poetry. I do not like writing short stories, but I have completed a novel. I feel like poetry is so underappreciated as well – most people admit that they don’t like reading or writing it, as they sometimes find it difficult to understand or interpret. But what I love about poetry is that it is so liberating – you don’t need to follow a certain pattern or structure; you can just write what you’re feeling and let it flow. Poetry is my heart’s most fabled song. My favorite things to read are fiction and, most of all, biographies on the stars of the 1940s and ‘50s. My bookshelf is full of biographies and pictorial tributes from decades past. Most of all I love to read about the lives of other people. I am intrigued and fascinated by the various life stories my biographies reveal to me. SJ: If you could live a day in the life of one of your favorite classic cinema stars, who would it be and why? LV: Rita Hayworth. Why? Simple: She was always smiling. (And she was a dancer). In every photo of Rita Hayworth she has a dazzling smile on her face, and she really was a much better actress than history gives her credit for. She was so lively, so vibrant, so joyous about everything – her eyes sparkle with undeniable happiness and she got to star alongside some of the biggest and brightest icons of Hollywood’s heyday. Plus, Rita said a beautiful quote that I like to incorporate into my own life. Rita Hayworth said: “Whatever you write about me, don’t make it sad.” SJ: Name a few of your absolute favorite film stars and starlets, both modern and classic. LV: My top five favorite classic actresses are Audrey Hepburn, Ingrid Bergman, Rita Hayworth, Katharine Hepburn and Lauren Bacall. My top five favorite classic actors are Humphrey Bogart, Joseph Cotten, William Holden, Gregory Peck and Jimmy Stewart. As for modern stars, it is really hard to find anyone like the Old Hollywood giants, but I really like Leonardo DiCaprio for the actors, and for the actresses I have a tie between Kate Winslet and Anne Hathaway. SJ: What’s one thing you’d like to do before you die? LV: I would like to visit Audrey Hepburn’s grave in Tolochenaz, Switzerland. Lauren’s Favorites: Author: Jodi Picoult TV Show: Dancing With the Stars Musical Artist: Lana Del Rey Old Hollywood Film Scene: The climax of Wait Until Dark. It is one of the mot epic scenes in ‘60s cinema – and it will absolutely terrify you! Subject: English or US History Literary Quote: “There's a lot of ugly things in this world, son.
