The event is a trade fair, as well as an award presentation luncheon where we honor our Small Business of the Year...yet
unknown. Do you know an exceptional chamber business that has made Deer Park a better place to live and do business?
If so, please submit their name to the chamber with written justification or fill out the form included in this publication. Nominations for Small Business of the Year will be accepted at the chamber office until April 26th.
This year the event is going to be “Rock Around the Clock”! So break out your saddle oxfords, poodle skirts and leather

Well, its almost Spring and we will soon be suffering thru another Texas Summer and saying, “man, I wish it would cool
off”. It has been a difficult winter in our country with many
areas receiving record low temperatures and snowfall. I hope
each of you faired well and escaped the wrath of OLD MAN
WINTER.
Deer Park has numerous events coming up in the near future.
The City Historical and Tourism Committee is presenting
Heritage Week, April 17th thru 23rd. The week will begin with
a parade, music festival, tours of Patrick’s cabin and a costume contest on Saturday. It will end with a luncheon at Battleground Golf Course on Thursday. Many exciting events
will take place in between. See the enclosed schedule.
Please join in to celebrate our proud history at “The Birthplace
of Texas” celebration.
The Chamber Business Expo is quickly approaching. We are
scheduled for May 27th at the Jimmy Burke Center with a
“ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK” theme. This year’s event is
sure to be a hit. It will give us the rare opportunity to go back
in time to our childhood of the 50’s and 60’s. So, break out
the poodle skirts and penny loafers, slap on the brylcreem
and join us for a day of fun, food, socializing and business.
We will have awards for the best decorated booth and door
prizes throughout the day. Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m.
For those of you who have not done so lately, please visit the
chamber’s website at www.deerparkchamber.org. Not only
does the website share history and information vital to newcomers to our city, it allows our members an opportunity to
advertise. If you would like an inexpensive but effective mode
of advertising, have ideas for improvement, know other information that should be included, or just want to inquire about
availability, please contact Nicki at the chamber office.
Lastly, we all know a volunteer organization is only as successful as the businesses, groups and individuals that support it. There are numerous opportunities to serve at the
chamber, with many of them taking very little time. By choosing the Ambassadors, Small Business, Economic Development or Golf Tournament committees, I promise that we will
find you something to do that will not only fit your schedule
but be fun and exciting too. If this does not sound like you,
come on down and volunteer at the office. Get involved, your
time is needed and you “CAN” make a difference.

Deer Park Heritage Week
April 19th - 23rd
When Commissioner Sylvia Garcia came into office, one of her first requests to cities within her region was to
identify the historical assets of their communities. With that assignment, Deer Park took a critical look into the city’s inventory of uniqueness. From that self-examination, Deer Park realized the importance their area played in the creation of the
Republic of Texas and, ultimately, the final outline of the United States of America.
First, the phrase “Birthplace of Texas” was trademarked by the City of Deer Park. Next, Mayor Wayne Riddle created a Historical/Tourism Committee for the city. To date the committee has spearheaded the moving of Patrick’s Cabin to
its present location on Center St. and subsequent improvements to the site. They also had the area on Center St. between
13th and Helgra named Deer Park Heritage Park, and have many plans for further improvements. In addition, they are
working to create a Deer Park Historical Museum, and the Theatre and Courts Building currently holds the collection.
The week of April 19th – April 23rd is Deer Park Heritage week. Saturday April 17 will begin with the Totally Texas
Parade, in which the Historical/Tourism Committee for the City of Deer Park has a float with the Mayor and City Council.
They will also have General Sam Houston and Santa Ana signing the treaty at Patrick’s Cabin. Tours of the Cabin will be
hosted, as well as, a fiddler and a costume contest. Monday April 19th the Boy Scouts will perform a Flag Retirement Ceremony and there will be a band in Dow Park. Tuesday, April 20th DPISD students, grades 1 – 5, will learn about Deer Park’s
history. Wednesday, April 21st is San Jacinto Day with the ceremony at the Monument. Saturday, April 24th is the reenactment at the San Jacinto Battleground beginning at 10:00 a.m. You don’t want to miss it.
APPLAUSE...Is our way of thanking those who have donated services, prizes and/or products during the month for
their generosity and support.
